Nicely told story. I'm glad that little bison got out and survived.
Thank you so much William. I like to think she has babies of her own now.
@@JudyLehmbergEpicNature its very sad that he survived it would have been fun if he died horribly
I was at Blacktail Pond during the week of April 8, 2024, and an adult Bison fell through the ice and drown. People were camped out for three days straight waiting for something to predate on it, but I never saw it.
Outstanding camera work Judy. Fascinating insight into the hazards of life for these bison.
Thank you Darryl! I really thought that baby was going to die. I am still impressed it made it out after being in there for so long. Like I said in the movie, every winter, while walking on the ice, adult bison fall in that pond and die. It has some very steep banks.
Q
Wow, I wasn't very optimistic watching this. Great work again Judy! It's surprising you don't have more subscribers... you should!! Greetings from British Columbia.
That yearling bison is a real jerk!
That baby must have been like "FUCK YOU MAN!" when it got out, i know i would
That moment when you realise you're sibling betrayed you
umm yea
freaking older siblings man, you can change the especies but they stay the same.
open sentences.
You always have such beautiful footage with the perfect audio to match. Thank you for all of this. 💖
So happy to watch that bison get out!
How kind of you! Adult bison die in that pond every year. I was really surprised he stayed in that long and was still able to get out. I'm betting he is one tough adult now.
I thought little guy was in big time trouble when he tried several times and failed to get out of the water. That cold water and air can run your energy reserves down fast, but he was resilient
I agree. I really thought he had had it. I don’t believe a human could have survived that long. We really wanted to help but with all those bison around and knowing how protective they are we couldn’t figure out how to help. We were hoping a ranger would come by but that didn’t happen.
Me: " Go Baby, go, you can make it!"
So glad it made it!! Woot!
+Tom Gladders I really didn't think it would when I was filming it. It seemed like forever.
Nice video. :)
A minor comment is although the baby fell because of the yearling's presence, it didn't seem to me like the yearling pushed the baby. 1:54. I saw it more like the yearling came to smell (touch) the baby and the baby walked closer to the water to go around the yearling and the baby's right front leg slips down in the water, causing it to lose its balance and fall in.
That slip happened as the yearling's back left leg slipped after the 2nd smell/touch, causing its head and right leg to go up (which would the opposite of a push). But the touch could have helped a little with the fall. But this is just another's minor interpretation. It was a nice video to watch. Thank you.
Oliver you really pay attention don't you!? At first I thought the same thing but there were a number of other people there watching from several different angles. The consensus was the yearling pushed the baby. Obviously not hard, but enough for it to slip, just like you said, and fall in. I guess we will never know for sure. I can tell you I was really happy it got out. The longer it went on the more I worried.
Judy, I guess we’ll never know another’s true intentions :). Life’s mysteries. Thanks again!
For sure not pushed
Amazing video and commentary. I will be sharing this and all your videos with my boy as I know he will enjoy them as much as I do.
Troy Bilt Thank you Troy! I'm glad it had a happy ending.
Just come across your channel, that little guy got a harsh lesson. Great footage and commentary. I'll definitely be checking out more of your content.
+Jonathan Wood Thank you Jonathan! You can see how another company, Hoff Productions, told the story sometime this spring on Animals Behaving Badly, a series on TV. Don't know the exact date yet.
that was one tough baby bison
Such beautiful scenery and great photography. And the music.
Thank you! Very kind of you to say so.
So inspirational, never give up!
Agreed.
"Oh thanks mom for doing nothing while my life was in danger. Pretty much on my own, got it!"
What was she supposed to do? Throw it a rope? lol

We are talking about bison though.....

Amazing videologue. Thank you.
Mith thank you so much!
Another extraordinary video! Thanks.
Thank you! It helps being in the right place at the right time which is pure luck.
So awesome that you for out, good going little fella survivor!!!!!!!
It was one of the happiest moments of my life. I knew I couldn't legally or ethically interfere and I did not want to see that little guy die. I want to think he is a big guy now using his head to clear the deep snow that is in Yellowstone this year to get to the grass he needs to survive. It has been a hard winter for Yellowstone bison.
Beautiful video and your voice is so calming!
Thank you so much Katy.
There's no place for weakness out there in the wild. From birth they got to hit the ground running.
Sorry Paul, I don't know why I just saw this. You are so right.

And they all (hopefully) lived happily ever after!
Amazing video . Ya done good mam . Keep up the good work . Most folks don't ever get to witness nature like this .
I'm 71 and would give anything to view wildlife in the wild . My wife and I want to head West and check things out before we get much older . We've been married 53 years and are free to try our wings before we're Heaven bound . Thanks again for the opportunity to see this . God bless you 😉
Thank you so much Rick. I'm 66. I figure it is never too late. There are tons of people in Yellowstone but if you go in May or September the crowds aren't so bad. Judy

Thanks for the info . Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon are on my bucket list . Lol and my wife's as well . Blessings to you
A Future Leader of the herd.
I've always wanted to think that as well, and I do actually believe it.
So glad it made it.
We were too Paul!
"It had all the rest of a sunny day to dry up." Lol what sun?
nyuu444 the same sun which kept the non existent bears warm !
It was obviously not sunny that morning when it happened, but about an hour later the sun came out. Days are long in early spring in Yellowstone.
So happy for the little guy bless. I get a feeling that baby has got a strong will to live I think it’ll become a full grown healthy adult. I’m rooting for ya buddy
I was too!
Its a female
I need to pick my jaw up off the floor ---- this is just the most AWESOME video! I have to admit, I was a little mad at you in the middle, thinking that it was going to be a sad ending, but BRAVO for a wonderful real life story that is so heartwarming!! People underestimate the Bison in Yellowstone. They are much tougher and very good mothers. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you Nancy! I was really nervous after the baby was in the water. Every year adults fall in Blacktail Ponds and some never get out. I can't remember if I mentioned that the baby was in there for a little over 12 minutes and it was freezing cold. We really wanted to do something for that baby but we really didn't want to get stomped by all of the adult bison around there. Plus it would be illegal to interfere. Luckily it got out. We were soooo relieved!
I just hope that little one remembered which one pushed it in and got even a few years later. Never forget!
Come on little fellow...…..yippee he made it......tough little guy.
Bobbie I didn't notice this until I looked at the footage later but he is a she. We were so relieved!!
Loved how the mom didn't give a damn about her baby and kept on eating right next to her while it was fighting for it's life. Beautiful nature.
A least bison don't abort their babies like women do.
That's a human interpretation of wild animals which isn't always applicable. Sometimes in nature, newborns are left to struggle as part of the process to learn.
I guess that isn't on their list of things they know how to do. I have seen bison go absolutely nuts trying to protect their babies from wolves. In one instance a mama bison stood and defended her baby (it was still born) for hours while the rest of the herd wandered off. She eventually started running fast towards the herd and away from her dead baby. We thought she had given up but she "rallied the troops." Several females came back with her and helped. Obviously it was useless, but they did try. We've also seen several bison "funerals" when a group of bison find a dead one. They all stand around it for a good while. Who knows what is going through their head.
Most likely Mother didnt understand how dangerous cold water is for baby
@@Ilnatica Yes, we can sugarcoat anything anyone does. But we can also let a joke be a joke and don't play smart alecks on every harmless comment.
I am so glad the little one survived; it more more gripping somehow than human stuff.

Yes!!!!
Damn it, I was ready with the bye-son comment
Ruthvik Kadam shouldn’t have said that so it can be a secret to u
Man how awful it must be to see your your calf suffer but all you can do is stare
Touching story
So how did this get filmed? Well really was this a drone? Was someone standing there with a camera. From the way the camera panned, it didn't look like a telephoto shot.
Great video (-:
I filmed it with a RED (name of camera company) Dragon (name of camera) on a tripod with a telephoto lens ( I know it was a Nikon lens, but don't remember which one now.) It is illegal to use a drone in Yellowstone. Thank you!
@@JudyLehmbergEpicNature Thanks for the reply. When I see fantastic nature vids like this one, I always wonder who was there to get the shot.
AWSOME!!!!

LOL @ The young Bison pushing the baby Bison into the water ahahahahahahahahahahaha😂

I think the yearling was aiming for a drink and accidentally pushed the baby in. I'm sure he was glad the baby made it out.
You might be right Kathleen but it never tried to get a drink. It is refreshing to have a woman comment. Around 90% of the people who view my videos and I've never been able to figure out why.
Me personally, I thought that bison was finished. I'm guessing that was that little guys last burst of energy. If he didn't get out on that last try I saying he was finished. Then the other bison had the rest of that sunny day to dry off !!
We did too! I think the same; her last burst of energy. We were so happy when she got out. (It took me a good amount of time during the editing to notice he was a she.)
Sure looks sunny
I thought it was a goner I'm so glad he or she made it

+electric wolf still if that were your mom would you say that or if it was you huh
+Assassin 0207110 ya I would
Poor baby! I know there is natural selection, but it doesn't make it any easier to watch a distressed animal suffer, especially an innocent baby.
Extremely cold water and air is generally not an option.. baby's like .. I'm tougher than you and after a while you're gonna need me when those wolves come around , and i might have to just think about giving hoofs and horns on that one !
nice
Thank you Gautham!
So glad the baby was about to get out. That really had me upset for awhile there.
When it fell in I thought grizzlies were gonna come charging out of the woods. Glad that didn't happen.
This is called "I'll make up what I want. Throw some music in, I'll do the talk'in." LMFAO
I promise you are wrong. But don’t believe you will change your mind. It ain’t Hollywood out there.
DAMN I WAS WAITING FOR HIM TO PAY THE PRICE!
>1:56< That hardly looked "being pushed in"....the bison calf just slipped......The yeariling bison didn't do more than smelling the baby bison , and even did a slight backward move....
......I saw a definate nudge
It must have been tough to film that and not intervene. If that calf had died how would the film crew feel? Interesting and important questions on the ethics of these interactions with wildlife. How close is too close, etc?
Rob it was very tough but I filmed them in Yellowstone National Park where it is illegal, and I believe immoral, to interfere with wildlife in any way. The Park rules say 25 yards is too close to any animal other than bears and wolves. For them it is 100 yards. If I had gotten closer than 25 yards I would, at the very least, have been fined and had my film permit taken away. Those laws are in place for a reason. We shouldn’t interfere with wildlife in any way. We already do that so much by taking their habitat, food, etc. every time we plant a new Walmart, house, road, or any other human activity. The only way to stop that is to stop, and decrease human population growth.
I agree Judy that we shouldn't interfere. I'm sure your contributions foster an awareness and encourage the protection of species and habitats. It was amazing photography by the way. I always try to remember that there are not just human beings behind the cameras - but questions of law, ethics, and sincere concern for our planet. Thanks for your efforts.
@@robvanwyck3063 how refreshing to find a smart person who understands. Thank you!
Rumors that after the baby bison got out, 10 minutes later a pack of wolves was eating it for lunch
Lucky little red dog.
He was! I really thought he wouldn't for a good while.
And some folk believe only humans are nasty. But animals can be too. That bison shoved calf in deliberately.
That's funny you should say that now because a friend of mine and I were just talking about that yesterday. The bison who shoved the newborn in was its very jealous one year old sibling. Classic sibling rivalry.
Is this Rosanne?
No
Give a single mother a break!
I mean a single horn mother.
Are you treetrunks voice on adventure time?
No.
The mother shouldn't have walked the calf so close to the water's edge. But that's beside the point.
I actually thought for a minute that the mother was going to use her mouth to grab the calf and pull it out.
I've been watching too many Lions videos.
One good ending to this.
The baby bison didn't just 'fall' it was pushed 1:58.
That was the whole point of my making that movie, because she was pushed by what was probably her jealous 1 year old siblings.
No an adult human can survive in colder water for more then 15 minutes
I don't believe you, show me
I thought a bear was gonna eat him.
It could have. I obviously don't know what happened to her after that day, but I like to think she will have babies of her own.

why didnt the cameraman or u help him
cuz fuck you they arent there to intervene
