As you can see, a major element of owning a Malinois is that you have to calm them down, while simultaneously accepting that you will never really be able to calm them down. 😂
Imagine having one crossed with a lab. He's 6 years old now, still acts like a puppy anytime there's a friend or when I start running with him. So adorable, but damn he's loud sometimes lol
Not as a first dog! If you mountain bike, jog for miles, hike a lot, have a horse this dog is for you. Not enough exercise & that dog will destroy your house.
I'm a dog trainer and I tell if you work 10 hours a day DONT, if you aren't active DONT , if you dont enjoy training a dog DONT , if you want a couch potato DONT, these dogs have to be worked , walked , and trained everyday!!!
Honestly, I wish more trainers would be honest, and also shelters, and breeders. Maybe then we would have less dogs given up or left on the streets. I hope you also encourage anyone asking about dogs that if they work 40plus hours a week, and no one else is home to not get a dog. Think about a cat instead.
I have a Australian Cattle Dog that a couple workers gave me when her dogs had puppies. I am so glad I did a ton of research on them before picking him up. Took a lot of work but he's a good dog. My vet told me he's the only Cattle Dog they like to see coming because he's so well behaved.
@@zoeye7095 once you have accepted the breed as it is ment to be used , your whole mentality flips into finding different ways of working a working dog and yes it does take a ton of work I applaud you and your vet is right because people want a pretty thing to look at because they dont know how to move their mind to teach
Oh lord that would be like getting an Australian Cattle Dog as your first dog and not knowing what you are getting into. I've got one after raising 4 other mini Schnauzers... he was like all 4 in one lmao. Took a lot of hard work bit he is a good dog now and totally worth it.
So my mutt is a husky/boxer/malinois mix. The owner of her mom BEGGED me to take her because she knew I was experienced with dogs. She's a handful, even with extensive and consistent training. But her littermates? oh my god. They are absolute demondogs. Totally run the house, too smart for their own good. One of her brothers was just stuck outside as a yard dog and his owners don't understand wHy He'S sO cRaZy
I got one 2 months ago. He was RE-HOMED 5X before me. I'm medically disabled, but this dog had me up and walking 3 miles a day, at the dog park 2x a day AND I STILL need to put him in day care sometimes to tucker him out. However, when I cannot move, he seems to know it and lays beside me protecting me, but if he senses I can do better, he lets me know. He's saving my life!
that's beautiful relationship with your dog! smart dogs can be a hassle because they are stubborn and have their own mind, but as a reward you get way more meaningful relationship with them, than you get with for example some smaller breed. also more you have to train the dog, more smarter they get because of that training! i really want to get a Malinois some day, but i want to first get a German Shepard of my own and see how that goes. i bet he is the top dog you're gonna remember over any pet you had. cheers from Finland!
That's great you got a good one! I got one from a rescue she didn't like being told what to do sometimes she would bite like really hard and Shake. She was super smart and a fantastic athlete. But eventually was going to kill somebody
Even when trained they can be pure chaos. I had a lady bring one in as a stray to the vet I worked at. They were having a barbecue and he showed up for burgers 😂 We scanned for a microchip and it was registered in German. He was a professionally-trained, government-issued DEA dog that jumped the 6 ft fence in his own yard because he smelled a neighbor's barbecue a block away. He was so damn pleased with himself 😂
@@alisonlaett9625 The handler's wife came to pick him up. She'd been calling around to see if anyone brought the dog in as a stray. I can't remember where the handler was, but she was taking care of all the kids and the dog and the dog took FULL advantage 😂
@@theVillageofBriFor a minute there I thought you were talking about my two sons. That is too adorable and hilarious that he decided to escape when his mom was with his human siblings. I would love to own a Belgian Malinois but I don't have the time to dedicate to do one justice. I need a sweet dog who is easy to train and terrifying to look at at least, but is a great family dog with cats. But, I have to work away from home.
My neighbor had one of these. He escaped one day, ran up to me stood on his hind legs and gave me a full body hug then ran down the block in the span of 3 seconds. It was crazy, adorable, and chaotic at the same time!
Exactly. And if you don't understand what drive is. Stay away. Ours hates thunder. We took her camping and she doesn't like the 4 wheelers. We can shoot around her no problem but 4 wheelers she dont like and thunder she hates. So she stayed in our camp trailer. We had a thunder storm come in fast and we didn't make it back to camp in time. Guess what. She met us on the road. Climbed up into the front of the 4wheeler and laid on the pad back to the trailer. One of the only times shes done that while their running. The door to the trailer had been ripped in half. Fiberglass, plastic, wood, and all had been ripped right through. These dogs have a determination unlike anything else I've ever seen. And the latest study on dog intelligence proves their far smarter than German shepherds or Collies scoring 35 out of 40. We're collies only got 25. They're super smart. Have the drive of a man who thinks he's going to get laid. And the energy to make sure they get what they're after Along with the smarts to figure out how to do it. That alone cost me roughly 1200 dollars at the vet to have the Fiberglass removed from her, nose, mouth, paws, and anywhere else they found it. As well as stitch up the large cuts she got from it. As well as 800 for the door. And another 100+ to have a 8th inch peace of aluminum cut out for the inside of the door to lower her ability to do it again. If you don't know these dogs don't get them please. If your planning on it. Get with trainers who understand them before hand. Join the groups on Facebook and other places. And if you get a puppy be ready for them to throw temper tantrums that can hurt you. I'm dead serious me and my wife had times we hid on the bed cause she was all pissed off that she couldn't have what she wanted. Their like a toddler with super sharp teeth and an insane instinct to chase and bite. I have stories galore of us trying to keep my cousins kids safe from her and telling them not to run in front of her and then turning it into a game to run her to the end of her lead. cause she would literally run and lunge at them when theyd take off. And having to put her up to keep her and them safe. She got better as she aged. She's had allot of training and work so now she's amazing but I'd have been in serious trouble if I hadn't worked with working breeds growing up. And didn't go meet with trainers and learn from other Mal owners
@@will1905 yeah mines going to complete 1 year. But before that he used to do the same. it was very frustrating at first but now I got used to it. He likes the cold but his body doesn't like it🤣🤣
@@gokul4262 😂 I don’t mind doing the work anymore but what frustrates me is that I have to drag him in order so he can walk and the bites too. He’s just stubborn sometimes.
Bro got the calmest malinois I've ever seen, guys this is NOT how a young untrained malinois puppy behaves like, they are like a mini tornado in your house
The Malinois dog is absolutely incredible and most people shouldn’t even consider having them let alone pursuing them. I definitely don’t pass the test to qualify for one!
But if no one haves them anymore there is no need to breed them? Cause they aren’t going to be released into the wild that’d just create problems. You would lose the dog you admire so much
@@Jogim0517 The problem is backyard breeders. When people who have no business owning one decides to get one simply because it's cute. The quality of the breed suffers goes way down. People were shocked when I refused to sell them one of my dogs. You had to qualify in order to purchase a dog from me. This is a working dog, not a couch potato.
@@Jogim0517 Just in the last month, I've had 4 people contact me asking if I will take their dog. One guy even threaten to put the dog down if I didn't take it. If you want a dog, get a poodle.. Malinois are working dogs!!
Amen Sarah, the life you save may not only be the dogs but the kids next door.Think about it carefully and be prepared for a lion in your house, good luck.
My neighbour has one, and she's even calmer that the one on the video. She used to work as security at the mall near our house, but retired at 4. She still lives with her trainer, and gradually trained out to be a house dog. I first met her when she was a couple of months out of retirement, still very alert dog. But a year later, totally mellow and chill. Lovely dog.
First malinois I ever met was a crack head. He got chompy when he was excited, by chompy I mean he literally chomped his teeth making an audible snapping sound 😂 now I know all of them are pretty much the same 😭 lmao I love them but I would never adopt one they’re waaaay too intense
I got mine when he was old and just wanted to chill for the remainder of his days. His idea of chilling was hour long walks twice a day. He also regularly escaped my apartment to either chase after squirrels or try and hunt down rats in the grass embankments on the side of the highway (yes, that is exactly as terrifying as you'd expect it to be) which was at least two miles away. I miss him so much, he was the best.
Yes lol..I took my cousins dog out for a walk and she new I was sick an literally would not let anyone near me. When I told her to go get a stick she came back woth a tree limb literally a damn tree limb and thought she would bring it into the house. Damn crackhead dog. Lol but she was so fun to babysit. I could still let her off leash in my yard an she would stay in it no matter what. She has never been around kids untill she cane around mine and she wouldn't let anyone near them when they would go for a walk with her. She stayed right on top of them and when my son who was 13 but has some disabilities she got on thr bed beside him and was so gentle we was shocked with how she acted with him. Even tho he can not speak really well she still listened an tried to obey his commands. She started figuring it out an he could tell her to do the tricks an commands. They are amazing dogs.
This is perfect. Mals have no off switch and are smarter than any other dog I've experienced. Mine knew how to unlock deadbolt doors to open the door. Nothing could contain her aside from padlocks on the doors. Not even a 10 foot chain link fence - she'd climb the fence. Insanely smart and a lot of work to contain that energy and train into a positive experience. Definitely not a "get one and ignore it" type of dog. 17 years we had our baby and she was at full throttle up until the cancer took her. Greatest dog I've ever had the pleasure of being owned by.
I haven't had the pleasure of being around a Belgian mal yet..a neighbor walks his little girl through our neighborhood all of the time tho. And I have/have had GSDS ,my sweet sweet so intelligent boy,Dax, who we lost at 7 years old last january from Lymphoma(horrible..absolutelyheartbreaking and horrible to see my baby go throughthat and us lose him) anywya he was a White GSD and omg he was so smart like your baby was. There was not a door/lock/deadbolt/cage that he couldn't open .lol..he was a Houdini pup for sure 💯 .and he was the sweetest most loyal, smart loving dog I've ever had in my life. And we had a bond that I feel like I will never find again with one. He knew what I was thinking most of the time. I ended up getting. A Blue GSD a few months later at 8 weeks old. His name is Kaiser and he is al.ost 16 months old. And he is a firecracker! Couldn't be more diff from my boy Dax was..which I totally understand, animals have different personalities and such just as we humans do. And it took me awhile to bond with him but it's finally getting better. He is just a lot more naughty lol than Dax ever was and he's destructive and just doesn't listen like Dax did...and he mouths/bites ALOT when I pet him /love on him/ try to put prong collar/Leash on him or do anythin really 🤷♀️🤦♀️ hee won't Even sit still or lay down with me to love on him or cuddle...he's too busy bitting me or pawing me or hurting me smh lol. He's Def a sh**head! I will say now that he is getting older he's starting to retain more and while I am.late getting him into training I will be doign so within like 2 months. Kaiser is super food motivated but jusy doesn't learn as quickly as Dax did..Dax I could tell hi something once or twice and he would jut know the stuff...Kaiser is very smart too just learns is different ways 😊 he is an ornery big dude but I love him to pieces 💜🖤...also I used to breed Chow cows when I was younger and they are so intelligent too. Like GSDs and Bel.mals...those 3 breeds(2 in my experience) are jst the easiest to housebreak and train in general. 🤷♀️
In a new study they were deemed the #1 most intelligent dog, surpassing the border collie!! Not at all surprising seeing how the show lines have absolutely wrecked BCs.
@@pupsap7714 a lot of it’s training. They’re incredibly smart and loyal, and if you do it right they look to you for cues. This dog has obviously been trained to do just that - hence the way it’s walking in the video. It’s doing what it was taught, even if it’s taking it a little too literally lol.
@@pupsap7714 at least you know ahead of time I guess, so you don’t end up with issues down the line. Personally, I always get rescues, so it’s a little different 😁

A belgian malinois is literally bred for military purposes. They are not pets but ultimate working dogs. Extremely neurotic and loyal, high energy and drive.
@@darynboynton8897 "military grade" doesn't mean what you think it means. It's just an advertising gimmick to get people to buy entry level products. The Malinois definitely isn't entry level.
Rescued my maligator not knowing anything. He was in a bad situation and I had to do something. Yep, my first dog! So after a couple of months of building up my knowledge, we now exercise three times a day, 3 to 4 skill building sessions a day. Weather permitting I take him to the lake to swim a couple times a week. I’m down 20lbs, I’d rather play with him than a stupid phone, plus I have no issues with squirrels, rabbits, or cats in my garden anymore. He definitely made my life better
Thank you for letting people know! Met a young couple at the dog park and they had a malinois as their first dog. That thing was running the entire show and they were just yelling commands, as if they were questions. And of course, the dog could not have cared less. I suggested that they do some intensive training and their response was that he had already been trained before they got him. Um, I didn't mean training for the dog, I meant training for the humans!
Yeah…That seems like it’d be, frankly, a very tense, stressful, frustrating, unhappy situation. They screwed up & so did the person who sold them that dog. ONLY hope is intensive training for themselves…& THEN, more intensive training with the dog.😬
Oh my! I could not have a malinois. Years ago I took training classes with a black labrador retriever puppy. The instructor at the end of the six weeks that my puppy had passed the training. Unfortunately as she said, you failed!😂. And she wished me good luck😂😂😂. Cassis turned out to be a beautiful dog. She trained me really well😂😂😂.
@@gaetanemcgraw5567 I can relate! My first dog was a black lab, who was dog reactive. The first day I took him to training, he growled and lunged at the other dogs. All of the other owners looked terrified (and relieved, that their dog wasn't the worst behaved. lol). The trainer asked to "borrow" my dog. She was a little tiny thing and I was nervous that he would drag her around the room. But by the end of class my lab was sitting, heeling, ignoring all of the other dogs (except for his nemesis, Muffin, the yorkie. That took extra sessions). This woman had him acting right within an hour. That let me know who the problem was😬🙋♀️😂 I was not very assertive with my dog training, it made me feel bad for some reason. But I was lucky that I had a trainer who focused on me and what I was doing (and not doing) to help my dog act appropriately. Because I didn't feel comfortable being assertive to begin with, I would pretend like I was an actor who was playing my dog trainer in a movie. And every time we went to dog training, for a walk, or even around the house doing obedience work, I would do the same thing- I asked myself what would my trainer do right now. Eventually, it just became second nature for me to handle my dog properly. But it was definitely a process!♥️
I've done a lot of training of all breeds. 99.99% of the time, the issue is the human, not the dog. You *muuuust* make sure the dog is the right fit, not only breed but individual personality or it's going to be rough.
@@deannad9105 And you just nailed it on the head. *This* is why there's a list of dog breeds that do not make good first dogs. Dogs are learning every moment of every day from the first second they come home. If you have a chill dog and make mistakes, you might be okay. If you bring home a smart, independent, stubborn breed with its own agenda and a ton of energy, you'll be up a creek without a paddle. The dog will *literally* bury you. For fun. Because they have nothing else to do. 😂🎉

2 year old mal lives next door, she doesn’t have a “job” and it makes me sad. She is very loved but doesn’t know what to do with herself so she just carries a giant log around all day every day. She jumps the 8ft fence like it’s nothing and comes to play with me lol she is a trip. It’s so fun to work with her but also great that I can tell her to go back home when I’m done haha. It’s definitely not a dog for the lazy.
At that point it’s your dog😭 and those dogs can jump really high, I volunteer at the animal shelter and had to chase a mal from escaping because she jumped over the fence
Yeah youre right about the jumping 8ft fences from a sitting, i found out the hardway whwb i got mine but now itnpsrt of our exercise, jumping up and over fences, sitting betwen my legs to cross a road and then our runs together. And even after the exercise they dont really have a off switch as such itd ball time then lmao non stop ball time they really just don't tire. But amazing companionship for life, but i wouldn't suggest a malinois for just anybody. Only if you have free time and will actually give them a job and let them work. Not for your average person who think they can keep it inside all day
We had a GSD, and towards the end of her life, she needed help getting in the car. We bought a set of steps that fit in the hitch receiver. The GSD still wanted to be lifted in. We now have two Malinois and the one, though she could jump the whole car, insists she can't get in unless we lower the steps for her.
@@Andy-ScotsIrish-TheGAEL. It came from backyard breeders. People breeding dogs who have no idea what they are doing. It has completely ruined the GSD. Disney did the same thing to the dalmatian. (101 dalmatians) Now the demand for Mals is increasing and in a few years this dog will be destroyed.
Aw they are so precious ❤ we love our GSD and Belgian malinois they are such amazing dogs so smart they take a lot of time but that time you take with them is so worth it we love our fur babies ❤
I had a Belgian Malinois growing up, they truly are something else… we used to take him everywhere we went if it was close by and he thought chilling in the bed of the truck was an absolute banger. So one Saturday morning we were going to get sod to replace it in the backyard. While we were leaving he came over to the door hype but we couldn’t take him because we were putting the sod in the bed of the truck where he rides. When I told him no he barked at the back door so I figured he just wanted to run around until we got back. I let him out in the backyard and we loaded up and started to leave. When we got to the stop sign at the end of our cul-de-sac I hear a load noise behind me. I turn around and my god damn dog is in the bed of the truck ready to go for the ride. This mf jumped over the god damn 6 foot tall fence, chased us the 750ish feet until we got to the stop sign at the end of the neighborhood and jumped in the back of the truck. To this day I can not believe that happened💀
@@GuacamoleyNacho I would never suggest getting a dog if you work full time but if you can come home lunch time and spend some time, thats good. Super tiny and we were so in love. 2 weeks later he started looking more like a German Shepard and started growing SO FAST 😵💫 now I’m convinced this is the breed he is. So energetic and wants to look you directly in the eye for as long as possible especially when walking. And the digging! He just found his bark which is fun. Had no idea what we were getting into.

Mine years ago, (25 to be exact) made an old man out of me... LOL.. but, at the same time, my buddy, kept me young at heart. Always on my toes. Best alarm clock I ever had too. 7 days a week, all months of the year, my buddy just knew it was time to go for a walk at 4 AM in the morning, every morning, even if I was asleep... "Come-on dad, it's time for a walk, we are late cause it's 3 minutes past 4AM!"... I will miss him for the rest of my life. But yes, these guys are full throttle non-stop. These guys can learn anything. I taught mine commands in 3 languages, (which are just sounds to them) and hand commands and about 300 sign language gestures so my sister can deal with him too. He could answer yes or no with the shake of his head, pending what you asked him...amazing 4 legged critters that is for sure, but boy, a 7 day week, is pretty tiring. 😆
Eric, Capri is an absolute gem! You are a great and kind but firm trainer that understands how to ENCOURAGE good behavior using reward and correction appropriately and helps the dog understand.

As someone with huskies and a dachshund mix, I concur. They are great but you better know what you’re getting into and be willing put in the work every single day or it will be utter chaos.
Sure, if you don't set fair but firm boundaries, spend time and train and work with them, both your dogs and kids will turn out to be complete assholes. 😂😂
Beautiful dog my nephew has one he is high energy but get alot of exercise. Hes such a great dog very obedient on all levels He put alot of time into him
I have one. She was handed down to me. She had a lot of issues, traumas and of course energy. But i never regretted any second the moment i decided to save her. She's beautiful inside and outside. Very smart, loud, sometimes annoying, seems like a toddler, time and schedule oriented, loves water a lot, loves treats, loves exercises, walking, palying and all. She's super strong and always got me hurt and bruises unintentionally. She has her own cage as per advice by her trainer. Whenever I'm not around she will go back inside of her cage and will wait for me to come out again. She's so adorable and well mannered around other dogs and people. She's my 1st ever large dog. I love her so much. She a hugger too. 😊😊😊
Exactly!! They become very attached to their owner and they often do have stress panic attacks when they're left alone for too long without their owner, separation anxiety.
Facts. My neighbor adopted one from a county animal shelter that some idiot had tied to a pole at the end of a Jack In the Box drive through with a bowl of water and abandoned him. (heartless! Evil!). His name is Jack now. Jack has severe anxiety and trust issues. I know being in her care is better than being at a shelter for sure, but oh man he's a confused pup. 2 years old and massive. I do understand this dog is traumatized. But when I met him, it was like meeting an intellectual, emotionally scarred giant clumsy baby with teeth and four legs. He is afraid to do anything, or he does everything x100. He wouldn't look at me til I called him over, then he pushed me down with excitement. He needs training and love. Luckily he is getting love now. Incredible dogs. A commitment of time and energy and discipline tho. Listen to this man in the video! ❤
@@PermanentHigh that is what I meant when I said he needed training. Maybe I emphasized my emotions toward this sweet pitiful dog too much but yes I agree. He needs a regimen.
The K-9 Malinois at my building walks in perfect circles nonstop. She can clear delivery truck rears as high as 6ft tall with ease. The MOST athletic dog I’ve ever seen!
It’s because he’s so well trained, he knows to keep his eye on his owner because he’s waiting for the owner to change direction or stop. That’s the sign of a dog trained in obedience. If you tell them to heel or sometimes just put their special collar and leash on, they know to pay attention and stay glued to your side. However, you can give them a release word like okay that tells them it’s all right to walk like a normal dog. However, I’m sure he’ll never pull. You are correct, though. The dog does know he’s special. You can tell he’s a confident, smart, well-trained dog, and I’m betting that everything he did in this video was on command, probably through hand signal. I love watching dogs like this work. You can tell they love it.
I love that you just walked down your street in your lounge clothes and your robe. Like an outward signifier of how calm malinois owners need to be while their dogs are cranked to 11.
I've had dogs my whole life. I currently own a Malinois and wouldn't trade him for the world. They are a lot of work, but worth every second of it. He is the goofiest, most playful, most sweetest dog I've ever had. Just know that Malinois can spend just as much time in the air as they do on the ground. Natural acrobats. With that being said, he will not hesitate to crawl up into your lap and cuddle. The only downside to this is if he hears a knock at the door or something in the house excites him, you will be used as a spring board. When he was a puppy, he spent most of his time attached to my pant leg.
The circles they spin before you get to the door...and intensity on getting out as quickly as possible. If doors could just disappear instead of swing open...yeah. crazy good wonderful manic dogs
OP. I’m in same position. Had many dog breeds prior to the Maligators! Thankfully I work from home so I am able to give full attention. I’ve got brother and sister, both two years old. They’re a crazy duo double act when it comes to playtime. They are like a synchronised acrobatic act when we throw their balls! Crazy, woofy, loving best buddies.
You think you have a Belgian malinois it is probably a mix. if it is able to be trained properly or you have very good training capability or experience. I know military personnel excellent dog-training experience who have not been able to handle a malinois. Many of them are being dumped on the market and lie to people about being just German shepherds because bad breeders figured out the dogs are hard to handle and even cartel members don't even like dealing with them. I have friends who thought they were saving them out of Mexico boy did they get burned. The dogs are purebred malinois the DNA was run and boy the dogs are just hard to handle because they are not a pet. Ok Don't give people false ideas of all they might be able to pick one up at the pound it'll be okay it's not. These things are bred for a very specific reason just like the Nazis bred their certain type of dogs and most of those animals were euthanized or basically killed by the allies after the war. Only those that came from farms were allowed to live because it was proven that those that came from the soldiers been purposefully done so so for too long.
@@valiantsfelinesmccarty6678 As much as you’re trying to warn people that most Malinois are not as easy as you’re assuming the original commenter is suggesting, you’re seriously overstepping by making blanket statements about a breed and simultaneously telling someone they are wrong about their own dog. Most people say the same things about Aussies - they need a job, they are very smart and very active and need constant stimulation. I can absolutely get behind saying this as a general statement to warn people about what you could be getting into with the breed. But arguing with someone that they don’t have an “actual (whatever breed)” is so dumb. I myself have an Aussie who does not tear things up or destroy property or pace or act up in obnoxious ways when not exercised enough. He is fine being a couch potato but is also up for any kind of activity and adventure. However I’ve also personally met multiple Aussies that are insane and absolutely NEED constant stimulation and exercise to not be absolute demons at home. I’ve also met others lazier than my pup.

So many Belgium in the shelter right now and being euthanized for not getting adopted after being dumped by someone who couldn't handle a Belgium. Its so sad. They have such high energy and need attention all the time and to be trained
I had a Doberman. Hard first year or two. Like a little velociraptor in your house. But after that, the smartest, loving, loyal and best friend you’ll ever have. I shopped, and then re-search for nearly 2 years before I chose between a Belgium and Doberman. And the deciding factor was breeders. I was planning to check out both breeds b4 i chose. Drove six hours to meet the puppies, and fell in love with one and sat in the garage for almost 2 hours, getting to know the puppies and I couldn’t leave without him. So I never even made it to the Belgium breeder but from my research they’re very similar dogs and were created in the same area except for Dobermans don’t have the coat to handle the cold. But they’re used in countries with warmer clients because they share nearly the same characteristics that make Belgium’s great dogs.
@@abramweston9873 Mines is full black I can’t even see him when he’s in his kennel lol but he is very loyal and intelligent he already knows over 10 tricks and just took 2 weeks to learn all of them. Ya see..... I found a 7/8 month old dog at a Huddle House in town and immediately bonded with her. Her old owner didn't want her and she kept climbing the fence, was badly taken care of. She's a Belgian Malinois mix 😭 she doesn't bark, she's sooo intellectual. She doesn't need to be walked on a leash because she stays next to me or a bit ahead and when I stop, she looks back and stops. She's so smart and I adore that I found her. My Scarlet is my emotional support and I love that she is high in energy, but she also loves her naps.
I was fortunate to have the privilege of caretaking my friends Belgian Melinois her name was Norma Jean! She was incredible, she had been properly trained and we bonded in such an extraordinary way. I felt completely safe, protected, as well as confident in her presence; every one cleared away when we walked together, they were in awe of our connection as well as her glorious stance. I am Guardian to two Doodles at present, also two rescued kitties. My next dog will be a Belgian… no one could get near me not even my boyfriend lol but … I loved it, and her tremendously. Rest In Peace dear Sweet Norma Jean I’m certain your are protecting the Angels in Heaven!
Can confirm! I'm fostering a Malinois (from a family member who was downsizing greatly and had no time, it was me or a kennel that had no time for individual dogs). I've never been so active in my life. I do have experience with Rotties (owned and fostered) but this is a different beast altogether. I'm sick right now and its awful! I love her to pieces but daaaaamn shes came with a number of complexities that she learned from her previous owner that needed to be corrected. She's heading to her forever home this weekend. If I decide to continue fostering Malinois I will be purchasing a god damn self propelled dog treadmill so when I'm sick or its waaaaay too hot outside, the dog will still be able to get the exercise it needs. I may be exhausted but I 100% enjoyed the experience and bringing this girl to a point where shes adoptable. As for owning, I'll go with a dog that's a bit less of a crackhead. Edit: She actually is staying with me until her reactivity is under control. I did get a dog powered treadmill for her. And I'm still having a blast with her. My GSD will have to wait. Edit: *ahem* Turns out, I like the crackhead dog. As of December 25th, 2023, I adopted her. She's still got a lot of complexities, but we're working through them. It takes just as long to train them out of bad behaviours as it does to create them. So I've got another 3 years of work ahead of me. I'm also probably going to get a Maligator puppy once Bella is a lot older. I love the breed and I absolutely love training and exercise!
I like the word “complexities” rather than “behavioral issues.” They tend to be learned behaviors, so they’re not inherent- much like a lot of people with complexities 😁
I met one that was literally the sweetest. He started tap dancing when I went near his cage and would bark at me when I turned away. But I knew in my soul that I wasn’t active enough for that boy 🥴
I used to work at a dog daycare. The malanois opened doors, unlatched gates, and jumped fences. They will outsmart you. I repeat, they will outsmart you.
I have a Belgian Malinois mix and she is the smartest dog I’ve ever owned by far. Very protective and dialed into my every move. Not only that, she has figured out how to turn on certain appliances around the house. I love intelligent breeds.
Had one. She was different alright. Found her in the woods half starved and running around. Gave her a home and had to track her down and bring her home several times before she settled in. Tremendous energy, stamina and loyalty at last. Lived to be 17 because she was determined to live as long as possible. Yes, they are very different ❤
Not love you don't know dogs if you say that. That dogs trained to focus on him. Thats the only way such a dog at an early age will walk with you like that.
Thank you for telling THIS to the world! It was about time! Maligators are NOT JUST PETS!! They can behave like pets at times but don't get fooled by that "peaceful demeanor" of theirs. They are, however, first and for MOST a WORKINGDOG breed. And WORKING it is, what they need to be happy!! ❤️❤️❤️ I will never stop loving this breed however!!
Very very different breeds. This dog reminds you of a GSD because he's well trained. But having a malanois is like having the energy of a half dozen GSD all packed in one dog with the intelligence of a sugar high 6yr old. They don't have an off switch either. And once trained properly their absolute focus can be off-putting to people not used to it. They really don't do anything halfway. Great dogs for those with the time energy and knowledge to handle them but they are not a good idea for the average person. A GSD is happiest with a job, but they can be just family dogs provided basic needs are met. A malanois NEEDS a job like an addict needs crack. Without a job it NEEDS something that can provide the physical and mental stimulus that a job would normally require. To give one example, my old GSD used to be content with a 5k run every morning and some ball tossing with a bit of obedience training thrown in. My malanois needs a 10k run over rough terrain (luckily I have a small mountain behind my house) and another 10k in the evening to be physically *content*. That's not tired that's content. And hes a tripod now so it would be worse if he had all four legs as he has to compensate for the loss physically and that takes effort. Any less and he'd be a pent up nut job. We also do SAR work throughout the day and the obstacle course once a week along with plenty of complex puzzles (not just your standard flip a cap to get a treat kind). A malanois is a dog that ⅓ of your day at least will revolve around him.
Dobies are practically the same in that aspect. They just won't immediately destroy everything you own if you don't spend five hours a day playing fetch with them.
My 70 year old dad is wanting one because we had one when I was a little girl and he was so fantastic!! But I’ve been trying to deter him from getting one at his age because he can’t get around that great. And I know it wouldn’t be a good fit. But they are great for people that have the time, patience and ability to train!!!❤
Incredibly loyal and incredibly intelligent. That also can male a dog incredibly annoying and frustrating because of that, and they are normally working dogs before being a pet
So glad you're educating people. Just because it's pretty doesn't mean you've got to have it! Just because you've seen (an incredibly well trained one) in a film don't imagine yours will be doing all that stuff. Chances are you'll not have time to walk it before work so you'll get home, tired, to your house trashed by a dog desperate to get some energy out. I tell people getting certain breeds as a novice owner is like adopting a child but choosing the craziest lunatic in the place. Chances are things won't go well.
We had a Belgian malinois when I was growing up she was a female dog and she was the sweetest most loving dog I've ever had. In her early years she was incredibly energetic but was always happy when she would run the fence line. As she got older she started getting injured more often in her runs and we had to make sure she didn't start running beyond what her body would allow. She will forever be the best dog I've ever met and I will never forget her. We were best friends and I miss her so so much. Not all dogs are the same though! So know what you're getting yourself and your family into :)
Don't get a Belgian Malionois or a Weimaraner as first dog. Get a beagle or a cocker and then try it bigger. At the end the Malinois always looking at you and later trying to get between your legs had me cracking😂 Ps: the fact that he's looking so much at you while he's on the leash is fantastic, he's waiting for directions
We had a Doberman and then a Weimaraner that trained itself 😂 She was so smart she copied every trick the Doberman did. The Doberman was much older and the puppy drove her crazy. They never run out of energy. Amazing and loving dogs ❤
They're also built to bite people. They are very commonly used din police work and they are first and foremost working dogs. If you can't handle that then you shouldn't get one because they can, and will want to bite
There’s this guy who always walks his Malinois at the same time every day as I do my GSD. It’s in an off leash park (not lots of dogs, lots of space). I let my dog just go run around and sniff. He jogs on the path, carries what looks like a military grade dog toy, the Malinois running right next to him, staring at him the whole time, then sprinting to get the toy and bring it back once he throws it. It comes to greet my dog, he says one word and it’s fully focused on him again. Such an intense breed.
GSPs are another breed that, while not as SUPER mentally intense as a malinois, should not under any circumstance live somewhere without extensive space to run nor with someone who is unable or unwilling to let them run free there for a long period of time. My family/parents have had GSPs for 25+ years now and when I see people (always in their 20s/30s) in my super densely populated city neighborhood walking them on a leash down the sidewalk...knowing that's the extent of their typical daily exercise...it's infuriating. It's like keeping an orca whale in a small pen/pool at Sea World.
@KJones-qs7ju a bit curious how you know that's the extent? Could be worse, my neighbor leaves his gsd out all day and I don't think the poor thing ever gets the attention he needs. He's surprisingly a good boy though compared to my other neighbors' dogs which also get left out all day...
My first dog was belgian malonie. Hes 1 and half year old and i huuuuuge and was draging when we was walking. And didint listen go anything. Now ive had him for 1year and hes an angel walks and behaves perfect
As you can see, a major element of owning a Malinois is that you have to calm them down, while simultaneously accepting that you will never really be able to calm them down. 😂
That’s like being in a relationship with me 🥲😅
@@RatQualia haha I was gonna comment the exact same thing :,,)
Imagine having one crossed with a lab. He's 6 years old now, still acts like a puppy anytime there's a friend or when I start running with him. So adorable, but damn he's loud sometimes lol

that's beautiful relationship with your dog! smart dogs can be a hassle because they are stubborn and have their own mind, but as a reward you get way more meaningful relationship with them, than you get with for example some smaller breed. also more you have to train the dog, more smarter they get because of that training! i really want to get a Malinois some day, but i want to first get a German Shepard of my own and see how that goes. i bet he is the top dog you're gonna remember over any pet you had. cheers from Finland!

I want one so badly.
Exactly 100%

That Belgian Malinois is extremely well trained and well-behaved.

Hey dog how are you
This is perfect.
Being owned by, being walked by, being coaxed and manipulated by. Glad you have fond memories, and fought the good fight, ran the good race. 🎉

Damn. That was beautiful to read. I wish you and your dog the best :)

My first dog was one and she would tow me on my bike to the butcher shop at an alarming speed.
😂😂 @ alarming speed
that was probably the highlight of her days 😂
I had two Akita’s which used to haul me down the street headlong standing or laying. Obviously I had to give them to family.
An alarming speed had me dying lmao
sounds like a job for a Rottweiler, nevermind that'd be if tje butcher was coming to you i guess 🤔
I have 3 Malinois & they are smart, funny, brave, affectionate dogs.
That dog has total, HEY DAD, HEY DAD, DAAAAAD vibes 🤣😭
A belgian malinois is literally bred for military purposes. They are not pets but ultimate working dogs. Extremely neurotic and loyal, high energy and drive.
EXTREMELY neurotic lol
Imagine a German Shepherd mixed with a Border Collie and raised on steroids and meth.
I’m sure there are specific lines of them that are, but that isn’t true for the breed as a whole. They are livestock guardians.

Good for you meeting the challenge

That let me know who the problem was😬🙋♀️😂
I was not very assertive with my dog training, it made me feel bad for some reason.

We rescued what we thought was a black lab… his nose was very short and he was barely tuning 8 weeks so he had no features.
That was the best behaved malinois walk ever. Like, for the regular person, that's probably not achievable😂
I've seen untrained one not too long ago. It looked like Meloanis took a human for a walk. The human struggled to keep him/her on the leash.

I have a Malinois/GSD mix, and I would LOVE it if she walked anywhere near that calmly. She gets frightened extremely easily, and it's hard even finishing a short walk since she's sometimes quick to panic

That dog is like "You are my everything", all the time 😂
WHAT ARE WE DOING, WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO, WHATS NEXT lolol
The K-9 Malinois at my building walks in perfect circles nonstop. She can clear delivery truck rears as high as 6ft tall with ease. The MOST athletic dog I’ve ever seen!
My Mother in Law adopted a Malinois mix. At first I wasn't sure that was a good idea, but that dog has become her protector.
He was literally prancing while walking. The dog must know he’s something special. Super smart.
The owner or the dog?
This is exactly it too those dogs are literally always at 11
@DriftySwift if they're not moving, make sure they're still breathing!
The excited tippy taps on the walk are the cutest.
"As your FIRST dog?" is the key line here. If you don't have at least 4-6 hours dedicated daily to that dog, do not get a Malinois.
I couldn't get one but i would love to meet one
I was gonna say. That springboard thing. Yeah. You cant trim nails enough for that particularly painful surprise.😢😂

My Malinois literally found me. Was a stray pup and chose me n now we’re inseparable
Ok
Don't give people false ideas of all they might be able to pick one up at the pound it'll be okay it's not.

So I never even made it to the Belgium breeder but from my research they’re very similar dogs and were created in the same area except for Dobermans don’t have the coat to handle the cold. As a Malinois owner, i approve this message.
Sounds like you need to put an old car alternator on that treadmill and hook that to a battery😂! Save on electricity that way!
I love how you mentioned getting a dog treadmill, and now you have one for her 😂
I like the word “complexities” rather than “behavioral issues.” They tend to be learned behaviors, so they’re not inherent- much like a lot of people with complexities 😁

And WORKING it is, what they need to be happy!!
❤️❤️❤️ I will never stop loving this breed however!!
He's very happy to be around you! I love the energy of the Belgian Malinois reminds me of the German Shepherd.
The thing I love about Mali's is the constant I love I love I love you i love you not to mention how they figure people out so quickly
They are scarily intuitive
Dobies are practically the same in that aspect.
They just won't immediately destroy everything you own if you don't spend five hours a day playing fetch with them.
@@fructosecornsyrup5759 the trick is never teach them to chase a ball 😜 I scent train then hide the object and leave her to it 👍
GSD same way
This is so true!
They are simply built different and should be treated as such
So glad you're educating people.
Mine gets random energy and starts going everywhere and jumps on almost anything including me😂 love my pup
At the end the Malinois always looking at you and later trying to get between your legs had me cracking😂
Ps: the fact that he's looking so much at you while he's on the leash is fantastic, he's waiting for directions
Puggle lol
