Hard Aesthetic | The Brilliance of Nintendo's Crafted Worlds

  • One of Nintendo's less acknowledged professions is the fabricated reality, fictitious worlds that emulate things like paper, yarn or other crafts. What most might not have realized though, is how far back this tradition spans, and how fundamentally connected it is to the design of these games. Join us as we take a deep dive into crafted worlds and truly define the value they have for the medium!

I always wanted to recreate the Paper Mario world in real life through a complex diorama, but I knew that would take a long time.

Yes, leave it to Nintendo to innovate in actually thinking about this: "if we're simulating recognizable real world actions for people to play with, what could the simulated material of the player's avatar and their simulated surrounds then mean for that?" I feel like this is a natural extension of Nintendo's history as a physical toy company; they think about videogames not as something that exists in some out-there cyberspace, but as actual toys and playspaces in people's hands. And they very much train any of their new devs to do right by this history. Fun video, thanks!

I really want more cute games in that style, feels like the industry is caught in realism or anime style (coming from someone that love a lot of JRPG that tend to have the anime style).
More variety visually and design please!

It is a very cool way of making games look and feel different for sure. It is also a really interesting way to use realism and todays powerful graphics. Games like Tearaway will simply hold up longer than a lot of other games in the future. Hopefully more studios will play around with crafts like this.
Also, shame that a lot of people missed out on Yoshi's Woolly World. It should be on Switch...

I always was drawn to a more stylized art style in games. Always thought that this fetish for 3d realism will end when the graphics are deemed good enough, like ' Ok, we did it! It's done! Now lets get creative with it ' lol. Thank god for indie ppl
Love, love, love you're videos! They are geting better and better!

It is no wonder the games that hold up today is still the games that did not try to look like whatever was realistic at the time. Wind Waker over Twilight Princess for example. A lot of the cell shaded games in general.

@@Transparencyboo Yes, definitely! I guess, if a game creates a consistent visual style it tends to age more gracefully. You remove a direct comparison to the 'real'.
Don't get me wrong, realism in games has it's place as a visual style, obviously, but personally I would be happier if it wold not be the standard. Games can be so much more then kainda-sorda movies, but not really :))

On the other sides of this 'simulated materiality' spectrum are, to me, these three other types of games: 1. Her Story type 'desktop dramas' and textparser interactive fiction like Endless, Nameless, designed to feel like you're just directly using a computer, as if you're a character in the game. 2. Tale of Tales games (The Path) and Team ICO games (Shadow of the Colossus), wherein characters move and collide like marionette puppets, with their own AI actions interrupting you constantly, and all material feels either solid and frozen, or flimsy and luminescent, and the story emphasizes all that; these game worlds feel like the polygons and flat textures and simulated physics/AI that they are made of, and you feel like you're outside of that, trying to push the story along. 3. Hyperdetailed object simulations, where the whole goal is to just fiddle around with physical seeming stuff, instead of using those to achieve some other fictional thing; so those toybox-like 'The Room' games, or maybe comedy sims like Job Simulator, made to feel like you are on the other side of the screen yourself.
I think the two cultural axes interacting here are: degrees of fictionality and degrees of materiality.

I have to say, this one really blew me away. I can't even imagine how much work must have gone into this one for all the crafts and drawings and the excellent Dave Rubin animations. Just completely ridiculous, but damn if it didn't pay off. Absolute banger of a video. Anyway time to cry about Tearaway and my little birblfaced Atoi.

Another excellent video! It is also interesting to see how many of these skeuomorphic/"crafted" worlds (be they hard aesthetic or not) tend to be to some degree cozy and/or heartwarming, it does make sense to some degree (since crafting is considered to some degree a cozy pastime) but I am pretty sure this can be used for much more than just that.

Like one of our quotes mentioned: there is a certain warmth to it. I suppose it is the familiarity. We look at fabric and paper in Bright colours and can relate to it on a quite deep level just by glancing over them.

The chubby smooth style of Links Awakening is pretty similar to the style of the human characters on the Pokemon Let's Go games. That was also a remake of a Gameboy game, but they didn't even commit to the style as much as Link's Awakening. Even though the human characters have this unique chubby style not seen in other Pokemon games, the Pokemon themselves are in the same style as every other Pokemon game. It would have been cool if the Pokemon were changed to fit the style, but I'd prefer it that way than terrible crunch.

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  3 роки тому +2

The difference is probably that a lot of people take Zelda very seriously in the sense that they think it is dark and mature. That is where Link's Awakening clashes with their idea. Pokémon has always been colorful (except on the gameboy because of obvious reasons) and have that cute anime vibe going on.

Nintendo really does such good work with the crafted worlds. Love origami king making an appearance too, that and epic yarn were amazing crafty games! Haven't played the newer Yoshi games much but they do feel great to play and they're so dang well done. Thank you again for adding captions to this video! My partner had a fun time watching it with me and she's a big fan of these games so it was doubly great.

Don't hesitate to contact us again if there is another one you'd like us to give priority. We are continuing to work on the back log either way, it takes some time, but hopefully it will be helpful to more people! We have not talked about it that openly yet, but were thinking about making a Patreon post about it once the full catalogue is done, haha. It is not really a Patreon reward, but still, just a nice little milestone to put on there. Thanks, again to you and your partner!
And yeah, while doing the captions for this one we talked about the toy Zelda and it is just such a good idea, haha!

It is obscene how few views this has.
EDIT: I would like to point out that my sister and I played Kirby's Epic Yarn, Yoshi's Woolly World, and Yoshi's Crafted World together. One thing people who only play single-player might not know is that Crafted World is, imo, genuinely awful for multiplayer. If we jump near each other, one of us will snap onto the back of the other and mess up both of the players' jumps. This issue ALONE made Crafted World completely un-fun for us, and we still consider Woolly World the best of the three.
