Cool stuff, I really liked that Hollywood Paramount Pictures and Sega Original Movies production with keywords Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr Robotnik and or Dr Eggman, Sonic 2, that guy Tom, Agent Stone, Tom's wife, Jim Carrey and also maybe Shadow. Do you guys have any fan theory or speculation about Sonic Movie 3 or Knuckles Series? Eh, the military had a clear agenda to have their real operations hidden from the public (see Rouge taking orders from the President to uncover Project Shadow). There is a good chance that the military were finding a scapegoat to contain the mass panic of Shadow stealing a Chaos Emerald in public without having to reveal the less than noble conspiracy around Shadow (play SA2).
But yes, they should be fired. I’m surprised the President didn’t do anything after Rouge reported back with the information and seeing Gerald’s last words on live TV.

We are honestly kind of surprised the Sonic community doesn't seem to have found it quite yet.
"We've gone quite a long time now without anything truly new from Sonic Team." This stings. I'm still waiting for a truly new Sonic game again one day. I LOVED Mania, it's my second-favourite Sonic game (next to 3&K), but damn, I would have loved it even more if it was entirely new.
I want more of my pure, untainted Classic Sonic...but without drifting into the overly corporate blind consumerism that you allude to at the end of this video. Or maybe, they could just make good Sonic games again, regardless of which style they go with, but I'd still hope that the final product can embody what made Sonic so good in the first place, both from its surface level aesthetics, and its deeper, momentum-based gameplay. I've been asking for this for what feels like my entire time being a fan of this character.

This is such a great essay, and very inspiring! There's kind of a funny tension towards the end, knowing what we now know about the surprise success of Frontiers, and in light of recent leaks that Mania 2 has been scrapped and Sonic Team will make Sonic 5 (assuming any of that is true).
Love that bit about Generations. That game never really worked for me and it really should have. 2-D Sonic just felt so off in his movements.

Thanks for pointing out that Sonic’s design (like that of Mickey Mouse) is iconic within its limited original context but is clumsy to deal with as actual 3-dimensional form. This problem became apparent early on and has never really been resolved.

I honestly didn’t think I was going to be interested part way through because I thought this was going to be purely about the aesthetic and I don’t generally care for that, but you not only proved me wrong but even made the bit centered more around the art versus gameplay very interesting to listen to.

Yea of course I would watch a Sonic Video Essay the entire way through. Anyways I love CD's asthetic which makes it one of my favorite CS games, but it could of used some work in game design. (Also while Naka was heavily involved with alot of ST projects, I never saw him as creator. Especially NiGHTS, that was more of Iizuka's child imo)
That conclusion honestly scared me cause I do like both C&M Sonic, and I feel like while the Adventure games were a depature from the classic asthetic, it expanded a more cinematic asthetic that evolved into the modern era. Say what you want about the "dark ages" but that is unironically my favorite era of Sonic. I'll defend Black Knight to my grave lol. We got my favorite moments, games, and media in the series in that era. They were products of that time in asthetic, and that's what I feel Sonic should be as he evolves. The modern definition of cool. (Imo I feel the movie kinda had that for today's standard, while respecting the classics too) Anyways great video, would love to discuss lots of Sonic shit with y'all.

Seeing how you gals put such a cute and affectionate effort into reading and replying every comment, this is going to be a struggle because I'm going to write like there was no tomorrow, but I just need to, so you're free from the obligation, you've been warned
Back when Orkut was a big thing around here, we had this community there, with a name that roughly translated to "I love to play Sonic". Although the name made it look like a silly community filled with kids, it was actually filled with mostly 20-30s millennials that started playing Sonic when 1 or 2 first came out. A lot of them were also artists, developers and other members of the industry. This amounted to a forum that had very high level discussions on the nature of the games, the nature of visual identity essence and gameplay/level design concepts (and of course, a lot of bashing on modern Sonic). There were lots of research on Sonic Retro forums, big walls of texts about "essence", be it either "geometric shapes" or "color palettes" or "not having humans" or "surreal landscapes with no correspondence on reality", and even a topic called "School of Level Design".
I had to tell this uninteresting story because this video made it appear that you're just old members from there, it feels almost nostalgic, as this were the exact same things we talked about from 2009 until 2013, and this video showed a conclusion that I and those members couldn't achieve, because we argued which game had the best example of what Sonic really was... And the answer is here: it's fragmented.
Seeing a video like this in a channel that isn't even all focused on Sonic and in 2020 (yeah I'm seeing now in 2021, but the upload date and all) makes me so proud and happy... I just want to congratulate you so much on this, on your train of thought and research and everything that culminated in this video. Thank you for making it, and wishes that the channel becomes very successful and becomes what you're expecting of it

We are actually not old members of that community you refer to, but we are quite aware of the Sonic discourse, haha. We are glad to be able to contribute to the discussion with this one, it is just very fun to talk about Sonic after all. We are a bit surprised not more Sonic fans have found this one yet, because usually they are quite good at finding just about every small take about the blue boy out there, haha. Maybe one day the alghorithm will bless this one and let more Sonic fans see it. Hopefully.

Hello! I now know that Orkut is closed but I was hoping that all of that Sonic knowledge wasn't completely lost to time. I'm working on a Sonic project solo and am learning all I can about the little blue rat. I want to ask if anything pertaining to the 'I love to play Sonic' community is accessible anywhere. I've gotta find out about their take on Sonic especially if it's anything like this wonderful video. Whoaaa Kiki on camera! A rare transparency sighting. The editing was great in this one! I hadnt realized how much complexity there was to the history of the franchise, so this was a fun retrospective for me. I should really get around to playing Sonic Mania

In the end we just hope Sonic fans get what they want. It seems the fan base has a hard time just rolling with the punches, you know? Hopefully the wider community will be able to enjoy themselves again soon enough.
I loved the Sonic Advance games (at least the first two) when they came out, and the change in style never stopped me from treating it as a true continuation from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I have to wonder if we'll never see another 2D Sonic game using the modern cast and designs.

If i could miss anything about the 2D arah of sonic games it would be the 2D platforms. Sonic has alot of appeal but alot of it can only be shown from a 2D perspective. I know they still do it but not the way they used to.

@@Transparencyboo it's a good vibe! night vale is like, a comedy/horror podcast that is still going but was mostly popular in the early 2010s and it's just told from the view of a radio host. best example for the comparison im going for is there's angels living in an old woman's house and he always follows discussions of them with "angels are not real." and it kind of fits the scary subtle undertones that the capitalist corporation sega would love to shill progressively worse classic sonic to us while saying "it's good and always have been you've always loved sonic." and you kind of delivered it in a way that really evoked the way that host delivers similar lines
