  • After having contemplated our writing, we've weeded out a problem that we'd like to share with our friends and strangers alike. What's the line between an essay and a review, and when will the norms of one obstruct the other? Are the things we write truly our own thoughts that we value, or is it a mitigation to appease an imagined crowd? Follow along as we attempt to liberate your writing methods!
Big thanks to our friends for looking over the script:

Yes, we put Doug Walker from the esteemed Channel Awesome show the Nostalgia Critic (and also Demo Reel) in the thumbnail, even though he shows up unmentioned like once in the video. But you know what? This is how you game the UA-cam system, this is pure clickbait, baby! Like half of the people clicking this will do so because they thought we'd be commenting on something goofy pertaining to Doug's brain, or whatever. How many of you even noticed Count Orlok from Nosferatu standing behind him? That was a funny element to include for the halloween season, right? Public domain is fucking great, I sure wish we had more of it, but you know. Disney gotta have Mickey Mouse, I guess. Anyway, if you read all of this, go comment "God is dead, Donkey is Kong" or something.

The thing that sucks is that we could actually be having really good conversations about graphics. The visual element is a massive part of games and is a key part of what causes people to feel emotions while playing something, but instead of really thinking about that and experimenting around with different ideas of what constitutes "good graphics" we're stuck in this late 90's console war mentality where more polygons = better

I've for sure been noticing lately that essayists seem to get self conscious over coming off as too positive toward a game people don't like or would usually brush off. It's safe to praise a Mario game without talking about what you don't like, but if you're gushing about Sonic, there's the whole stigma of the "weird sonic fan" weighing over you, and I think there's a desire to distance oneself from that kind of thing by taking the aspects of something you don't like and playing up just *how* much you don't like them

Very much a result of 80's, 90's, 00's tech culture, from out of globalizing neoliberalizing NASDAC cyberspace evangelism, before tech development definitively stalled in the 10's (and regressed in a bunch of ways). Technical capacity to do cool games (and office tools and movie special effects) kept noticeably increasing season by season, and companies were competing over that, so it popularized a culture of proclaiming every media object as either better that it's ever been or woefully outdated, based on a balance of objectively measurable increases in: computer graphics processing capacity, sound, control complexity, plot-theatricality, simulational complexity and system speeds/stability.
I think all of mainstream pop nerd culture is still stuck in that frame of mind, comparing technological merits and thinking cultural history has to be an arrow pointing forward and upward. I mean I can hardly get through a normal discussion of what I've been playing without calling some game better than another, while referencing none of the actual messaging or content of either game. I have to actively stop myself doing it.
Early radio electronic and mechanical pop media, and their critical landscapes, were likely the same back when recorded music, film, instrumental performances or popular theatre were in more of a high stakes tech race period. But right now this having to judge all things "objectively", so not interpretively, in order to be a credible critic, seems to stem from the videogame tech race that ended a decade back.
That said, since we can't have nice things, the cultural essayist critical theory writing that rose to prominence in the 10's, hampered as it still is by that old objective reviewer salespitch virus, is itself also largely just a "marketplace of ideas" type pseudo-academic discourse, that generally cheapens and distracts from whatever it's actually trying to address, and cheapening whatever concepts it uses to do so; slacktivism style. So another type of problematic. Games don't need to mean something, not even by meaning nothing, nor do they need us doing essays, in order to still resonate with, and influence, society. But video essays do tickle the brain nicer than the old games review style, and they do spread media literacy and philosophy by applied example.
Sorry for the full comment essay. One of those tiring comment types that's also inevitable when doing youtube video production, I'm sure

As a content creator myself and have been making videos for 7 years on, I've just recently become disillusioned with reviewing games. I still want to talk about video games and why I love or hate them, but I don't wanna "review" them because I'm just a guy who loves video games. This video, I'll probably rewatch so I can rethink my approach and contemplate what my next step should be.

I appreciate your analysis of this video landscape. This has been something I have been especially thinking about as I put more of my own writing out there.
It is interesting that despite the ways the genre has evolved and innovated in the past 5 years, we’re still operating with conventions from the 2010s. Not that this is a bad thing, but it is illustrative of how UA-cam’s systems helps to propagate this kind of culture and expectations within the audience. I for one would love to see other essayist take a similarly introspective approach to the genre.

It's neat to think about if nothing else, and by doing so we might actually be able to move in another direction if we so please. We think that there are a lot of ground to cover when it comes to treating pop culture like video games as art, rather than just stating that they are so. And that is pretty rad and exciting actually, we should see it as an opportunity!
And thank you, that monkey really has a lot coming.

  • @PostMesmeric

It's nice knowing that product reviews and critiques can coexist if we let them, even if there's a segment of the community that tends to gravitate towards one or the other. I like knowing if a game is worth my time and money, that's obviously very important for the culture and industry. But it's good being aware that these pieces of media can be studied outside of that perspective too. You honestly were very balanced in this video, explaining that both types of content can (and should) coexist and that writing a script doesn't need to be all-encompassing to satisfy a public that may only care about what you DON'T say rather than what you DO say. So yeah, that's my own long-winded way of saying, "big thumbs-up."

"God is dead, Donkey is Kong" or something.
This is really valuable advice, thank you for making it :) I have often felt the same sort of pressure in my writing. It does feel like any piece will be perceived as incomplete if it doesnt include a value judgment, which is of course frustrating. At the same time though I always (so far) want my audience to feel interested in playing the game for themselves and not just taking my video as the end of the discussion, even though I decidedly do not make reviews. For me at least where this settles is not declaring good or bad but rather communicating that the experience is interesting through other ways, like using the original soundtrack and making sure to include clips of the most visually captivating parts of it. There is so much depth and potential to video essays and it really feels to me that as a community we are still only scratching the surface of what the medium can do.

Having seen a couple of video essays using review brains to defend video games currently bashed by GamerTM culture (as well as criticizing well-liked video games) by going into deep, political understandings of those games' themes and characters, it can take a heavy toll on your mental health and create a debate on what merits a good video game.

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  2 роки тому +5

I think it is pretty neat that people are going into games/movies that are considered to be bad and looking at things that make them worth while to them anyway. Like sometimes it doesn't actually matter if it's necessarily good or bad, the interesting part can be that there is more to it than just that binary :9

if anything, you could have a small part at the beginning saying "this isn't a review, but a thematic analysis/video essay about our thoughts on X. whatever we think about the quality of the examined media is not relevant to the point of this video" and thats it. thats how you get to avoid entering review brain AND prompt people to treat it as a video essay, not a review - so you can avoid SOME of the annoying comments without having to appeal to them with unrelated points on gameplay or whatever.

I mean I think a big reason people consider video essay's to be reviews is because for most art mediums the artist reading is the review. A movie doesn't need to worry about gameplay the review is the art. A reading is a new way to engage the art to enjoy the art. Where a video game can simply be impossible to experience for particular people due to bad design, how hard the game is, lack of accessibility features, etc. The game is an important part of the way the arts experienced.

    This was a great review!
In all seriousness, I found this super interesting and revealing. It makes me think that I’d rather see creators “covering their bases” by considering/replying to objections to their central arguments than by going into reviewer brain mode. Pros and cons from a reviewer perspective can feel kind of rote and distract from point of the essay. But anticipating ways in which the audience might disagree and responding can be really interesting and strengthen the argument.
Thanks for all your great work!

Commerce and Brand Loyalty have retained such a frustratingly strong grip over games discourse to the point of inserting themselves into topics where they don't belong or didn't have verbal pretence of belonging, even in my work and the works of other people who I know for certain would reject the concepts consciously when discussing them, so it's super interesting to see this knee-jerk desire to defend ourselves and cover our bases given a tangible form, lord knows it reaffirms that I'm not crazy when the instinct hits ~
Even remotely subversive reviews of games are frequently lambasted for not being effectively an IGN derivative and not framing it purely as a buyer's guide that warns you about whether or not you should consume the thing, and more in-depth editorials that praise and criticise games in out-of-the-box ways (while not necessarily being wholly indicative of said games as consumer goods) are frequently under risk of commenters upset that the thing they like or dislike isn't being described in a straightforward binary that can be applied to staring at the box at your local retailer.
Hell, even when writing this comment, I instinctively refrained as strongly as possible from saying the word "capitalism" due to the alarm bells that set off when the word is uttered in very clearly related subjects.
    Absolutely amazing work as usual

Speaking for myself in terms of the reviewer brain though, I'd say it comes out most flagrantly when I anticipate critique (an absence) of critique. It happens when my brain tells me "everyone's gonna say 'yeah well [thing] sucks' so you have to do it first and then you can add the 'buuuuuut' and the conversation can be productive"
Other times I feel it creep in more as a vent, or maybe an amused indulgence in the bad.
It's definitely a mitigation thing more often than not... but I think another side of it is that it's a wedge that opens the door. It's the "good expected opinion" to start on, so that people will ease into trusting the later perspectives.
    And finally,
In the face of everything else relatable in this, I think the most relatable part for me is honestly the state of the nail polish at ~1:00

This will be super handy for referring back to whenever my future writings start to veer off course. I’m so used to writing appraisals of a piece of media coming from my news writing background for my various school newspapers where I felt like the only way I could squeeze in writing about games or movies was to make a review on them. But now, venturing into the essay side of things, I’ve found it’s a lot better to let my hair down and speak to what I wanna be saying rather than what others wanna hear. I gotta say I really appreciated this video. I don't write much but when I do I often go long amonuts of time not thinking of this and then it just clicks. All of these parts here that don't add to the fact this is supposed to be a review gone. It doesn't matter how long I spent writing those parts agonizing over the thought behind it or how long it those many paragraphs would or even the fact that when sharing my thoughts with people person to person I absolutely mention these parts. They just get deleted no matter if it's minutes, hours, days, or even weeks worth of writing. I think I'll try to include more essayist styled comments in my stuff they're the bit I have most fun writing, the most psychological (which psychology is endlessly fascinating to me), and also the way my brain is thinking about the writing most of the time anyways.

As someone that write many reviews or essays but never do poste them or make them into a video because I always find them bad (precisely cause I find them too unfocus about what you said), your video gave me some hope backs.
Thank you. I will need to try applying your philosophy.

it was wild watching this and expecting not to relate to it bc I don't publish video or longform content in any sense, but I really found myself being like "oh, I do that!" anyway... just as like, an artist on twitter with a couple thousand followers. I've caught myself in the pattern of not wanting to talk about anything I enjoy just bc you can only say so much without going over all aspects of a media, the pros and cons, what the writing excels or fumbles through, etc, and as such discussing or making art focusing on one aspect of something you love feels daunting bc you can often still get those comments, wondering what your intentions are or if you're properly aware that x media you love is "actually bad" even making an artform that takes a much shorter time for them to consume. weird how it works like that! this made me think a lot about how much expression of joy I hold back just bc I'm worried people will be upset by that expression. as a new subscriber, thanks for the video!

Great vid! I'm not sure I completely agree, but if you'll indulge me I'll explain myself:
I've done a few Metroid vids over the years, and I always end up feeling those are my weakest ones. I'm up to my ears in love for that series, and I think I end up plastering over the cracks in my arguments with sheer passion. Which is compelling if you agree with me already, sure! But if the viewer doesn't share that passion for the series, the cracks in my argument are pretty obvious. If I instead construct my argument from the foundation up, making objective observations and then using them to inform my perspective, then even if I don't convince the absolute fucking clown that doesn't share my passion for the series I at least give them a stronger idea where I'm coming from! It also has the potential benefit of clarifying for those that share my passion why they enjoy the series as much as they do!
That having been said, yeah, I totally agree that "Reviewer Brain" can go way beyond the point of being useful. No matter how many hours you spend poring over your script, it's UA-cam. It's an eminently low-brow platform; it is a crucible of hostility. You could create the most incredible piece of writing on the platform and you're going to get a ton of bad-faith bullshit in the comments from folk that were only half-listening, or went in itching for an excuse to disagree, or just decided they hated your voice, or were looking from a cheap laugh, or for no reason at all. There is literally no reason to waste a single fucking brain cell on them when they clearly haven't extended the same courtesy.
On a slightly unrelated note, I'm taken with the delineation between "review" and "essay." People's understandings of a lot of terms are really scattered and slapdash. Critics use "satire" to describe basic parody; TikTokers use "POV" when it's a third person view. How then do we handle words like "review" when honestly I couldn't tell you specifically what a review even is? Is it a buyers' guide? Or an examination of the art? What about a "retrospective?" Is a modern perspective a necessary component of a retrospective - a retroactive perspective? "Critique?" My understanding of the word was always that it was a critical examination, one focused on negative perspectives even if the writer's actual views were overall positive, but looking it up that doesn't seem to be the case at all.
Thinking about it maybe this latter paragraph is just a me problem.

Great points about the way words lose seem to lose their meaning from people who use them incorrectly, that definitely forms issues in discourse (e.g. "objective", which people often seem to misunderstand).

I feel this a lot. A few caveats for important topics can be useful, but it's so easy to fall into countering every possible bad faith argument against your video because you just *know* they will come up. I've been planning on discussing issues like this in a future video but I know that even those very points about bad faith arguments will *also* be taken in bad faith by some people, likely the very ones said video would be trying to reach. It's frustrating and demotivating, but ultimately I try to aim for a better balance. This all comes back to the larger issue of toxic fan behaviour surrounding media criticism, how anything you say that they disagree with is interpreted as some objectively bad attack on their character. I know a lot of people will be mad at me if/when I release my video on Sonic Frontiers, because I think the game is pretty bad. But maybe that's their problem. As long as the harassment doesn't get too extreme, at least.

In one old Nintendo Magasinet they talked about the latest news that the Nintendo Playstation partnership went into flames, and with hindsight it's just funny to see them really confidently say that it will probably fail because who would like to work with anyone other than Nintendo now that they had their 64 bit machine in the works. Bonkers stuff, haha.

I have found the game reviews on IMDB to be equal to if not better than Metacritic. I didn't even know, until recently, that IMDB had video game reviews!!
More in keeping with the theme of this video essay, I'm personally more interested in critiques than reviews. Naturally art is subjective, a point which may make critiques and reviews often meld into one another, however I do believe that a more rigorous and critical lens will naturally lean an analysis more towards critique than review, the later acknowledges personal preferences.

    I enjoyed this, "review"
No, but seriously I think my similar understanding has come from my time in college (or university) I remember my professor in my Bibles class telling us not to write our papers on the Old Testament or the New Testament but to really focus on one idea. Instead of writing about Leviticus choose one chapter of Leviticus. That stuck with me from 2008 to this day.
What I like about your channel and some other essayists I watch is that the videos talk about a game like I would with a friend. The themes and what resonated with me. I don't say to my friends for example, "Wow, that new Zelda game, a real 8/10 story" Videogames are interactive and UA-cam is, in mind, personal ("You" is in the name) and yet so many game conversations are supposed to be viewed as an objective, sterile book report. This disappoints me.
Additionally I am currently writing about Metroid: Other M and while I'm currently trying to catch up on all your videos I am afraid that if I watch that video on Metroid that you did it will influence my opinion directly (or worse, indirectly) so I've avoided it for now. That's another reviewer brain issue I've seen with UA-cam (along with UA-camrs and content farms flat out stealing other people's work)
If you did a part 2 or would want to comment on that at all, I'd love to hear your opinion.
Apologies if this comment was too long/rambling

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  3 місяці тому +1

Feel free to watch the Metroid video, don't worry to much about it. We don't talk too much about Other M, its more just part of a point about the overarching lore of the series being bloated and kind of bad. The rest is mostly about how cool Fusion is. And a cool thing that we as creators can do when we have watched other people's work is that we can quote and reference each other to make our own videos even better. That's just encouraged honestly, but you have to decide that for yourself of course :)

That was a really good review!
Loved the cute animations and video footage in this. Also, your keyboard layout confuses me, why is the A where the [ should be?! And yea, the point you make is a good one too. It's hard to have a discussion about games, media, anything, without feeling the urge to throw in some value judgements and get sidetracked talking about how ' good' a thing is. That's not to say I don't appreciate when a video essayist gives their opinion on whether they liked a game or not. That does help to know what viewpoint they're coming from. But it shouldn't be necessary when you're just trying to philosophise about motherhood and FFXIII or whatever.
