In 1977 my brother had an extra ticket he couldn't sell to Supertramp's 1st Philly area concert at the Tower Theatre. I had no idea who they were. I wasn't doing anything, so I went. My mouth dropped to the floor and stayed there for the entire event. When they did this song, I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing. They had a really cool 2nd World War film playing behind them. On that magical night, it became my favorite Supertramp song and is still to this day. I had chills while they performed this. Thank you SO much. Because of its length, I never dreamed a reactor would take it on. The sound in that theatre was amazing. There were only about a few hundred people there. Incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael, I grew up only a few miles away from Upper Darby’s Tower Theatre, would have loved to see that show. Supertramp six years later played to a packed house at the Spectrum in ‘83. 17,000 fans plus. One of my top 10 concerts ever, of hundreds. Btw.. sadly never went to the Tower, though I hear David Bowie and others played there in outstanding shows.

My introduction to Supertramp was live at this tour. I had a cousin living in Ottawa ( I am from Toronto) and I was visiting for the weekend. He called and said there was a band playing at the Civic Center and did I want to go? I asked what band and he said "Supertramp". I honestly had no idea who they were. I asked how much the tickets were and he said $7.50. I said "reserved"?...(lol). He said yeah. So I said ok. I called my buddy and told him who I was going to see and asked if he knew who they were. He said yeah...his sister liked them. He brought over Crime of the Century. I was blown away. So I go to the concert thinking it'll be good. I was fucking floored. Imagine hearing this song for the first time...live. Supertramp became my favorite band in the world for the next 5 or 6 years and I saw them 3 times. To this day they are in My top 10 in music history. They are peers of Pink Floyd.

Roger Hodgson's masterpiece that took him nearly 5 years to write and is a combination of three pieces of music with lyrics, according to Roger, that are meaningless other than they can evoke thoughts of patriotism and also the thought that man is a fool and will lead us to a downfall. All this from 1977 with snippets of Winston Churchill's (British PM) famous wartime speech in the face of adversity, William Blake's poem "Jerusalem" and Gustav Holst's "Venus". It is a fantastically conceived piece of music that I have seen Roger play with his band and which Roger also wrote for an orchestra to accompany. Thanks for playing it Chod.

Rick Davies really took it hard when Roger Hodgson left the band to spend more time with family around ‘87 or so. He’s a keyboard virtuoso who I feel is underrated when gauging Supertramp’s success. He felt they had a lot more music to offer ahead of them. Lots of experimental, almost counter-radio friendly with bands like Supertramp, Chicago, and Pink Floyd. They weren't scared to make music that transports you away to somewhere else that's not here.

Discovered them as a tween in the 70s as the DJs at school dances used to play them when on breaks. Finally saw them in Ottawa in 77 as a teen. My first live and still to this day best concert ever!!!!

i was trying to find out if the wind ssound was done by scratching fine fabric, didnt find it, BUT i found THIS: "The sheet music on the piano, though titled "Fool's Overture", is actually "The Star-Spangled Banner". .."

It is such an incredible orchestration,..Supertramp, PF,..their trademarks if you will, having these background noises, voices, animal sounds,..I heard this after discovering FM,..we had FM in the car, our console tv that had a 8 track tape deck, record player,..but my folks never listened to it,..it was always AM, and my friend told me, that's where all the really, really more progressive, and wild music on FM,..and I had a AM only radio, then got a transitor portable radio,..and latched onto this rock station, first song I heard was this,..the dj announced it,...and I heard overture in the title and I'm like hmmm,..and then it kinda starts off in a classical manner,..like ELO'S Roll Over Beethoven,..so its deceptive, you know,..it sounds beautiful,..but your thinking why are they playing this on a rock station,..like Elton's Funeral For A Friend,..then the beat picks up,..and it has this swagger,..you weren't prepared for,..my brain just latched onto it like fish to water,..I had heard Pigs, from PF, seen the video on Midnight Special,.young mind flooded already with progressive music, David Bowie,..but this,..this was blowing my mind,..that speech in the background from Churchill,..and those immortal words, "we schall never surrender ",..it just ,..I had goosebumps and still do when I heard that,..and the length of this song,..that first time I heard it,..just enthralled,..frozen until it stopped,..and so wanted to hear more,..I became a stalker,..once I found out the telephone # to the radio station, I called I swear every day,..the dj would answer, and before I could say it,..he's, like, Fools Overture, yess i know, I know",🙄, huh he started to know my voice,..recognized me, I swear,..I didn't care, had to have my Supertramp fix,..phenomenal band,..Supergroup,..do add them to your play list,..you'll be hitting rewind, repeat,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

Like comment below, saw Supertramp in Liverpool in a gigantic Marquee as they were massive here, about 60,000 turned up WITH Tickets and about 60,000 without listening outside. Mate all these albums are from 73/4 to 79/80 Paris Live is my fav, being a drummer the BPM is 5-10 quicker! We all knew every lyric and even they said it was between us and Spain as their best gig on a World Tour. They were just note perfect from start to finish! You’d think you was at home with headphones on. Next to Stevie Wonder at Lake Tahoe, 2016 or Supertramp 1989 two best gigs I’ve been too…

Love Earlier Supertramp...saw them 3x live and they are prenominal live! My first album by them was Crime of the Century and it is one of my go-to albums in it's recording, musicianship, fun to listen to and their most Prog album, IMHO. However, Even in the Quietest Moments & Crisis? What Crisis are their best works Listen to all of these & tell me what you think.

You also can't argue with " Crime of the Century" that said the actual the song "Quietest Moments" was the very first time I heard a Supertramp song. To this day, I know where, when, who I was with when I first heard it on an awesome stereo system. I had my own with Dual 701, pioneer amps and 10 band equalizers, reverbs, Sansui and Kenwood speakers . It was superb playing anything from them on it along with Pink floyd and so many others. Lost it all in the Loma Prieta earthquake.

I couldn’t agree more. Even in the Quietest Moments is such a sleeper album but once you dive in it will take its place as one of their best. What a run of albums from Crime of the Century to Breakfast in America. SuperTramp are magical!

Another great song by one of my top ten groups. Great reaction. For something a little rockier, and with GREAT horns - try Cannonball by Supertramp - one of their last group albums - featuring the other lead vocalist - Rick Davies. It's a banger !

  • @michaelrees1376

The chanting in the opening moments was from a crowd supporting Adolf Hitler followed by Winston Churchill's famous speech "Never surrender." My thought about "take to the skies" referred to The battle of Britian at the time of the speech. Unfortunately the "called the man a fool" is probably a reference to Churchill as well. After the war he was belittled for warning about the communist threat.
This song is so complex that anyone can find their own interpretation.
