Although the band started in 1970, the best of Supertramp comprehends their output between 1974-1979. That is to say, the albums Crime of the Century (1974), Crises? What Crises? (1975), Even In The Quietest Moments (1977) and Breakfast in America (1979). One can add their live album Paris (1981) which has great live recordings of these four albums. Although they managed some descent records afterwards, none can really compete with what most who lived through that time period consider their golden age as a band.

Just like Genesis when Peter Gabriel left the band and Phil Collins took over as lead singer they were going for the charts. With these two bands you need to listen to the earlier stuff because that was definitely when they were their best and expressed their True talent.

Great reaction! What they mean by underrated is that Supertramp hasn't gotten the recognition in the public eye, over the years, that a group as good as they are should have.
I've been listening to this album since I was three years old. 41 now. It was the first concert I ever went to (at three years of age). The lead singer is my uncle, so this music has been with me my whole life.
I remember when their first album came out.it was one of the most melodically, crystal clear sounding, sound balanced set of tunes.mastered to perfection.no muddy sounds.every instrument is easily heard making you appreciate all the layers.sure the songs were good but the superior sound quality was what made it so memorable and this has been rarely matched by albums prior to its release.
@@keithjones6023 I'll always consider School their best song, but the whole CotC album is great. Maybe Asylum is a bit weak in my opinion. But the sum is more that the parts.
The main reasons groups end up in the underrated status is there were groups that were overwhelmingly dominant in the field. It’s the Led Zeppelin, Yes, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, etc. that is the cause. There were so many JUGGERNAUTS out there that many AMAZING talents were simply overshadowed, thus “underrated”. The “underrated” of the ‘60s ‘70s etc. are FANTASTIC.
Hello Chod, really appreciate your past comments about live music showing the real talent. Artists actually performing. With that said, please check out "Telegraph Road" in Sevilla 26.07.2015. I definitely consider this album in the all time top 5 best ever recorded. You should also listen to Fool's Overture off their Even in the Quietest Moments album. Totally epic.

Co-produced with the band and engineered by Ken Scott. Look him up. He received a Grammy nomination for engineering on this album. He engineered or produced for the Beatles, Bowie, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Jeff beck, Rick Wakeman, Lou Reed, Nilsson, Rolling Stones, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, the list goes on. Much of Crime of the Century was recorded at Trident Studios using the infamous Trident A-Range console, one of the best sounding desks ever made. Equally infamous at Trident was the 100 year old Bechstein piano used on this album as well as by other artistes, on tracks such as "Your Song", "Killer Queen", "Hey Jude" and by Carly Simon on "You're so Vain".

Rick's introduction made up of just a minute of harmonica playing has gone down in history as the most unique playing of that instrument ever. Then he starts playing the piano.
Really enjoying the channel. Please react to Harry Chapin (Chay-pin) who was a great storyteller who passed away too early in car accident. I would recommend starting with “Taxi”and then “Sequel” (which is Taxi part 2.) Other great songs include “Mr Tanner” “A better place to be” “Cats in the cradle” “WOLD” both live and studio versions are excellent.
Wait until you've heard "Rudy" (from the same album) - Underrated because they were somewhat late to join the prog community I think. But in my opinion this is their best album. So many amazing transitions - and I'm a sucker for transitions.
I've always preferred Crisis What Crisis? to Even in the Quietest Moments, A Soap Box Opera, and Another Man's Woman always been a couple of my favourite songs.
I hope you played this REALLY REALLY LOUD. We blew the speakers on a tavern sound system when this album first came out. I maxed out my headphones here. Good stuff.
My favorite ST track is 'From now on' from the 'Even in the quietest moments' album. It also has a killer Piano intro and some delicious sax. Would love you to react to it. I don't think it was released as a single so is less known. I always feel like I get 3 songs for the price of one when listening to a Supertramp track. Your channel is great. Keep up the good work young sir.
They were a populate and well regarded band but were overshadowed by Floyd and perhaps Jethro Tull and Yes. They were also competing with ELP. There was a fair amount of prog rock around at the time. So they weren’t as huge as they might have been and are more neglected today by reactors than the other bands I mentioned That’s why people say underrated...not getting the appreciation they deserve. Glad that you are liking them though. They were a great band!

I watched this yesterday. Another great reaction. I liked your line of thought about going from Illusion to Illusion and then how they brought in a classical sound with the keyboard solo. Great tune. Here’s three I don’t think I’ve seen in other comments from them: “A Soapbox Opera”; “Downstream”; “Don’t Leave Me Now”. Totally loving your run of Supertramp here…
You've reacted to both this and "Bloody well right" today... This song actually fades into the start of "Bloody well right". Try listening to them together one after the other! A lot of the "Crime of the century" album is like that - not quite a concept album but pretty close: For instance you hear the song "Dreamer", then the song "Rudy", and you realise that Rudy is the dreamer.
Masterpiece from a masterpiece album.... Four masterpiece albums Crime of the Century Crisis ? What Crisis? Even in the Quietest Moments Breakfast in America Two very good albums Famous Last Words Brother Where You Bound Interesting and quirky music, often called " progressive pop" as opposed to progressive rock, the dueling songwriters/ lead vocalists have contrasting styles...pop, rock, jazz, a touch of blues, ( School is almost psychedelic rock) all swirled around....all still fresh, 40-46 years later
@@keithjones6023 I go through streaks with the " Brother" album where I'll constantly listen...the only reason I don't list it as a masterpiece is the song " Ever Open Door"...it is a mediocre song, it doesn't really fit the rest of the album, and a terrible choice for the last track... should have flip-floped it with the title track
This song like Pink Floyd 's Another Brick in the Wall is all about having to suffer through the British public school system.Always liked the harmonica at the beginning it reminded me of Sergio Leone's beginning of Once Upon a Time in the West

Rudy is definitely up there with the very best of their songs!
@@keithjones6023 Rudy is a journey. You emerge numb from all the pain.
Thank You! My fav Supertramp!
A phenomenal piano solo.
😊✌
I agree it's wonderful, it's a joy to listen to every time!
Would love to see you do "Fool's Overture". It definitely takes you on a long and epic journey throughout.
Crime of the Century and Even in the Quietest Moments are their masterpieces. Prog Bliss.🎵🎸🎧
I've always preferred Crisis What Crisis? to Even in the Quietest Moments, A Soap Box Opera, and Another Man's Woman always been a couple of my favourite songs.
❤️ 1970’s
The Best!!!!
I'm in the UK and it's raining again. I wonder if Supertramp ever did a song about that?
Bloody Well Right!
Hi bro! U R going right way! This bands( Led Zeppelin, D.Purple, Nazareth,Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Manfred Mann, 10CC, Queen ...)I listening since 70-ys/ It,s gold music!
They did pog rock when most bands were pop /metal.. truly in a league of their own.
Totally loving your run of Supertramp here…
I believe Supertramp is underrated because their music is too sophisticated for many people.
Four masterpiece albums
Crime of the Century
Crisis ? What Crisis?
Even in the Quietest Moments
Breakfast in America
Two very good albums
Famous Last Words
Brother Where You Bound
Interesting and quirky music, often called " progressive pop" as opposed to progressive rock, the dueling songwriters/ lead vocalists have contrasting styles...pop, rock, jazz, a touch of blues, ( School is almost psychedelic rock) all swirled around....all still fresh, 40-46 years later
Funnily enough, although Even in the Quietest Moments is a great album, l just about prefer Brother Where You Bound!
6:40 oh that bass line...keeps bringing me back in ...again and again....
Every song they do is about depression and the music is a cure.
Thanks, Wilburn - my favorite!
Another superb band from the UK.
You absolutely have an ear for music, you understand it.
This album is Magical!
Absolutely!
Great choice man like always! Another request: Criminal Mind by Gowan. (He is a Canadian singer, dancer, pianist) Try the musicvideo, you will see how good he danced during his youth. Continue like this!
Aah now we talkin, pianofest.
wildly spread tunes scattered all over
