- The Color Purple was a Drama movie that came out in 1985, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Oprah Winfrey. The movie, as with the book it was made after, was set in Georgia in the early 20th century. In the early part of the movie, the 2 sisters Celie and Nettie were violently separated from each other, forced to live their lives away from one another. This is the very last final ending scene, where Celie and Nettie are finally reunited once again. It's a tear jerker...so be ready.

@Anthony Williams Geraldine Page had a 40+ year career on the stage and screen, had seven prior nominations for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress since 1953 with no wins, and was in failing health at the time. Whoopi was about 30 years old, and her sole prior credit was a largely comedic performance in a one-woman stage show. Lastly, many Academy voters were likely uncomfortable with Alice Walker's black feminist perspective, the film's controversy with the NAACP, and its taboo subject matter (e.g. incest, rape, spousal abuse, lesbianism, etc.). I imagine all of these factors played some role in ultimately denying the win to Goldberg.

I like how Mister watched from a distance instead of directly approaching. He didn’t need to get credit for reuniting them because he realized they never should’ve been separated at all. He didn’t need to come to Celie so she would accept his apology.. he knew what he did was redemption enough

I don't know if I could call it redemption, but I still think Mr./Albert's story arc (especially in the book and also the musical) is inspiring. An abusive man in a long line of them who eventually understands how much he hurt everyone around him and decides "I can't undo the pain I've caused and maybe I don't deserve forgiveness at all, but I can still be a better person from now on and do right by those I've hurt".
I love love the color symbolism. Nettie is wearing a deep vibrant purple. After years being away from the abuse, poverty, racism, and misogyny of the U.S. she has flourished. Celie is wearing lavender. A paler muted color. Her joy is less than Netties from the years of pain, but it's still there. And her children are wearing all different colors and shades, literally a bright future.

I remember watching this documentary that wasn't edited or blurred out, I think it was either about Sierra Leone or Monrovia(Liberia), saw some pretty wicked shit go down. One part some dude was dying on the street begging for help and all of a sudden BOOM his head completely explodes from a soldier with a shotgun.
Spielberg and Goldberg were truly robbed and snubbed at Oscar time.
Whoever passed on awarding these two gentlemen an Oscar, should be embarrassed of themselves. It's a shame when something so wonderful as this film, doesn't get the recognition it so truly deserves. The writers, director, producer, actors, well just about everyone, did an amazingly fantastic job.

I wish y’all could have seen this opening weekend in the theatre like I did. You would not have believed the level of wracking sobs throughout this scene. We had no spoilers back then. No cell phone distractions. We merely took it all In. And we experienced it all together
I mean it's not like people didn't know the ending if they read the book. Only reason why the movie is so good is because the book was well written and the movie followed the book as closely as they could.
I saw it in the theater on opening night. We were all just sobbing our heads off. I have watched it several times through the years, and I still sob like it is the 1st time I have ever seen it.
You should've gone to the theatre in the 1920s. There were no computers, no internet, we actually lived!!! No distractions, we actually spoke to people in person! Those were the days 🙄🙄🙄

I watched this for the first time last week, believe it or not on vhs and the tape was still sealed, no tracking needed and perfect picture... Just an amazing movie with a perfect ending, I wish I watched it in the 80s
You could tell Nettie was so nervous coming up. She must have been worried that her own sister wouldn't recognize her after so many years apart. So when Celie yells out her name you could see the joy and relief come out full force and it's beautiful. I love this scene.
Celie never forgot Nettie. Nettie was Celie heart. Celie love for Nettie never dead. Nettie was the only person that love Celie unconditional.

Everytime Celie screams "Neeeeeettttiee!" I open a big, big smile before the tears start to flow nonstop! Genuine tears of joy. Very few movies can accomplish that.

2 things happened to Albert that day
He realised for the first time in his life what it was like to do a good thing for someone and straight from that, he realised what remorse felt like. A magnificent scene, poignant which would bring a tear to a glass eye
I think his transformation was the blessing
Something just occurred to me as I was rewatching this. Albert saw Celie and all her family, immediate and extended, all together and loving each other, and happy, and Albert is all alone. If he had been a halfway decent human being to any of them, he could have been part of it also, and now he sees that.
Its called redemption.
@Christina Vorhis I think his transformation started after Celie left, and he hit bottom. Shortly after that, he was in the juke joint with Harpo and Sofia, and he told them he was glad to see them back together again. That in itself was high praise coming from him.

My sister- who is in heaven now these past 5 years- we were just as close as Celie and Nettie- I'm 60 years old now and I know when we reunite- it will be just like this- tears; crying puddles...
Oh Michele, I'm so very sorry for your loss. 2 weeks ago we lost my stepfather to cancer, so I can relate. It is very difficult loosing the ones you love the most. I am sure you will be reunited with your sister someday, and I hope it is a wonderful reunion. I lost my mom and brother in 2018 and I cannot wait to be reunited. Hopefully will be just like this. I miss them so much and just want that one last time together at sunset to say I love YOU. So many things left unsaid.

I was 14...and broke down in the theater. It was her face that did it...her inexplicable joy and sadness at the same time...her complete vulnerability. THAT broke me. Seeing her reaction. Empathy. It was heartbreaking.

I agree pacificrules. Mister was for a time, a horrible human being, but in the end he showed his humanity. Sometimes forgiveness comes at a cost, but I am just glad Nettie and Celie were reunited, along with Celie's children. That, in the end, made everything worth it. It's an extremely emotional scene. I don't think anyone could watch this, and not atleast have a tear in their eyes. Thank you very much for watching.
I have to really dig deep to find forgiveness for Mister. He made her entire adult life a misery. He did the right thing in the end...but wow I’d have a hard time getting over all the awful he did to me, if I was her.
I concur. Forgiveness for Mister would be extremely difficult. One good deed doesn't outweigh all of the horrible ones. Now if he continued to try to make amends, then it would be a possibility, somewhere down the road.
The ending with Danny Glover’s character passing by Celie and Nettie under the sunset. Everything comes full circle.
the absolute baddest movie of my generation, hands down! struggle, passion, redemption, love, betrayal, vengeance, determination, power, perseverance, all wrapped up in a movie of historic proportions...can never be duplicated. Oscar-worthy for sure!

If I could I would, but you see I am a man, and I have no feelings or emotions, otherwise I'd cry and show everyone how sensitive I truly am, and how moved I am whenever I see pain and injustice, however I do know, whether or not people believe it, there is a God who loves us beyond our comprehension as is demonstrated by this wonderful reunion scene.

Okayyyyy Naw, them beautiful black folks and garments wasn't from round them parts.
It has always been a reminder to me that no matter how bleak and hopeless a situation seems, miracles can happen.
Her stepfather impregnated her and her children were put up for adoption at birth. The same man that her sister ended up working for and later married turned out to be the man who had adopted her children.
Celie's daughter looks like her and looks at Celie with that daughterly expression of *wanting.* Wanting her love *as her mother* wanting her acceptance *as her mother.* Wanting her mother's unconditional love and acceptance that every child craves from their parents. Something nobody wanted from Celie before.
If this scene doesn't puddle your eyes you're just incapable of crying.

You are exactly right. I’m only 20 so I spotted this movie by chance at a friends house in their movie collection. This is the best ever emotional scene IN MOVIE HISTORY! I cannot believe how this movie made me cry and not only in this scene but the scene where Shug Avery and her father embraced. Oh my God how my tears fell.
It’s bittersweet. A joyous reunion, but yet so tragic they were kept apart for so many years.

I've always thought the Oscars were rigged. I put no trust or faith in whoever the judges are. Whatever basis they use to judge and score movies are wrong. 11 nominations and not a single win. That's just sorry on the part of the Academy Awards, just plain pathetic. They wouldn't know a true cinematic masterpiece if it fell in their lap. They had the opportunity to let The Color Purple shine, but they didn't. Shame on them. Nevertheless, the movie has continued to entertain and stir emotions in countless viewers ever since. So we got the last laugh.

The film was way ahead of it's time. Things that seem normal now were not common in 80's film:
1. All black cast
2. Woman to woman kiss scene - was more taboo then
3. Speilberg's use of shot angles and lighting - we know them to be genius now, but old hollywood did not, because it was unconventional at the time.
So enough people were able to recognize how awesome it was and nominate it, but not enough to vote it as winner.

For me, it's Olivia. When Olivia says, "my mother" and starts sobbing, I can't hold it in anymore and I bawl. You can just tell all she has ever wanted up until this point is to see and hold her mother for the very first time and when she finally gets that wish, all the love, grief, and happiness just comes spilling out of her.

Saw this movie in the theaters. The entire place was pin-drop quiet as the car was driving up to the house. Thirty seconds into the reunion and all you can hear is sniffling and heavy breathing. People were a mess. I've probably watched this scene on youtube 20 times over the years and every single time it messes me up. The first time was absolutely brutal to experience. Christ.
I never had the experience of watching this movie in the theaters. I can only imagine the emotions of the people watching with you. But this scene has always been special to my heart and I can't help but to break down and cry each and every time I watch.

Finally, she breaks free, becomes her own person and things settle down. And then out of nowhere her sister, her children and the missionaries that raised them show up. As soon as you see the car coming down the road you just knew.
It must've been a wonderful cinematic experience to share that with the rest of the audience. I'm just so glad Celie finally found some happiness in her life. Seeing her go through everything she did...my heart was so sad for her.
My first thought was gratitude for waiting to see this at home. But I think I missed something not sharing it.
dobie, I feel the same. But I was only 10 at the time when this movie came out. If I'd been just a little bit older, I think I would've liked seeing it in the cinema along with the rest of the audience, sharing in their emotions.
One of the best movie endings. Also, the way the music swells as Shug gives that knowing look far off at Albert as the sun sets. Devastatingly beautiful.
Even though the movie omitted some important parts of the novel this movie is a masterpiece. We all identified with Celie’s long suffering, humility and loneliness, one cannot help but to cry tears of joy for her unexpected reunion with her children and her dear sister Nittie.
I'm a grown man and I cry everytime I watch this scene. Just plain old good cinema.

There’s something just so bittersweet about Albert passing by the girls as they play. A man that tore them apart and caused them pain in misery for over 40 years, just casually passing by them like nothing ever happened.
You missed the points that was his way of redeeming himself. He realized that his father was the problem and kicked him out of his life. He broke free of his own chains and realized all of the damage he caused. That’s why he helped and paid for nettie to get back from Africa and event arranged the meeting. He “passed by” as symbolism of him passing over his old sins and becoming a new man.
I beg to differ he in my opinion had one of thee greatest character arcs in a movie . His realization of the pain he caused and him wanting to make it right is what lead him to pay to have them come to america to finally be reunited . He was looking at them knowing a terrible wrong had been finely made right .

My mother left in 2010. She was the most important person in my life. My brother died soon to be seven years ago. He had Down Syndrome and suffered horribly in his last years as he deteriorated and his world was taken from him. I can hardly wait to see my mother again and to meet my brother for the first time whole and strong and healthy.
When we enter Heaven’s gates, we will be reunited with all those we loved, who went before us. They will be among the first we see, there to welcome us home.

This scene is such a tear jerker because it says something about love: No matter how mean people are, no matter how terrible the times are, love is there to be reconciled back and redeemed. All those years go by, the pain and the struggle, which is why the redemption of Albert and reunion of the sisters is even sweeter. We live in a f'ed up world, but this f'ed up world still offers the chance for redemption and reconciliation...."Nothing but death can keep me from it" is what Nettie said when she was driven off the land as a kid. And her prophecy was right. That's why she kept writing those letters, and as evil as Albert was, he just couldn't bring himself to destroy those letters....Despite all the bad in the world, it can't kill love or the way to get back to that love between Celie and Nettie...the letters that were hidden were the conduit for one helluva reunion!!!!! Yes, the letters Nettie wrote were the flame of love that would not be stamped out!!! And it was Albert who, in spite of being evil, he redeemed the situation that was terrible before he ever got involved and he redeemed himself. The reason we cry is because deep in our hearts there are often situations we hope will be reconciled and redeemed, too.

Despite all the bad in him and how he just didn't respect Celie as a human being and treated her like crap, with age comes change and there was good in him and it was an amazing moment. Every person on this earth has good in them because God had good in him and he's in our soul. sometimes we just have to dig deep and age to uncover it ❤️ but I felt that feeling of remorse and happiness in Albert like no other
In the end Celie and Albert actually became close friends who enjoyed each other's company

I have NEVER, and I repeat NEVER, been able to watch this scene or movie without sobbing like it's the first time I've ever seen it! And although the reunion of Celie with her sister and children are beyond heart warming, I think what gets me the most is the fact Albert sought redemption and followed through with it. He finally did right by Celie! And that notion keeps my faith in humanity alive. We CAN change for the better, each and every one of us ❤

It’s amazing I saw this movie at 8 years old and subsequent times thereafter with my mother. I’m 44 now and the scene when she reunites with her sister still brings tears to my eyes at almost 45 years of age now. Thank you Momma for bringing this classic to my life and I will make sure my daughter sees this as well.

Yeah this film is amazing it doesn’t deserve to be nominated, it deserves to be a winner a best picture and the best endings in cinema like the ending of E.T. and don’t worry about what other people say about the film, it is so epic 😍😭

The ending of this movie always makes me bawl and the worst part is I cry even harder when I see him walk past in the background. He finally did right by her. Even though he was horrible I feel bad for him too.
It's almost impossible not to cry while watching this ending scene. Honestly, I always found it hard for me to feel bad for "Mister". He was such a horrible person. But honestly, he did his best to make up for all the bad he'd done. He did reunite Celie and Nettie after all those years apart, even though he was the direct reason they were separated in the first place. I try to feel sympathy for him and hope he has a better life, but sometimes it's difficult.
Child of the 80s yeah I always feel for him because he did not really know any better since his father was a horrible person and taught him the same ways.

Yes, but Spiritually...he broke the cycle of hatred and fear his father had created, and probably what was done to his father too. He did right at the end, and I have to believe that in the reality of Color Purple, he healed and became a better man/Soul. This is the most beautiful and power movie ending EVER.
@@-ChildOfThe80s It’s hard to forgive someone who did you wrong in so many ways and those that say it’s easy that’s crock. To forgive means you let go of the past and not let it haunt you anymore lest you just become bitter, angry, spiteful, and depressed. Albert finally heard the voice of God and decided to listen to it, hence he did right by Celie and Nettie and that was enough to give his soul peace.
Just goes to show, even the hardest & most cold-hearted of people are capable of doing good
To everyone who is saddened & angry that this film didn´t win the awards it so richly deserved. There are some films, as in life, that do not need awards because they are bigger than such things. They are classics. The Color Purple is such a film. We can celebrate this everyday when so many films with awards are forgotten & gather dust on a shelf somewhere. God blessed this story with truth & that will remain with us for ever.
The visual imagery of the ending Is marvelous. I cry when I see the purple and red robes blowing in the wind. When Adam hugs Celie and sobs like a child. And the scene between the two sisters seeing each other after so many years. Thank you for posting this beautiful tidbit.💕

I always remember seeing it for the 1st time in a theater, and that cut to the long shot of the robes billowing, my heart stopped, I knew it would be Nettie.
This is the scene why I couldn't almost finish watching this movie for a second time. Celie's cry: NETTIE!!!!! And that sense of release FROM THE HEART OF AN OPPRESSED SOUL really made me burst into tears. Whoopi is...simply STUNNING.
As soon as Celie cried out for her sister, that was it for me😢 literally sobbing like it was my own family.

After watching the latest version of this movie, The ORIGINAL is implanted in my heart as long as I live. It’s a classic that should’ve never been touched. That script, following Alice Walker’s book is so powerful!

My mother cried every time she watched this scene. She has been gone 3 years now. I think of her every time I see this. I thankful she introduced me to the masterpiece. Yes miss her.
A film I as a white man have watched well over a hundred times, I have read the book on many occasions. I cant put into words the imprint this film left on me and the educational journey I went on concerning black history after it. Beautifully and masterfully done with an exceptional cast. Nothing for me will ever top this masterpiece. It breaks me every single time especially when she meets her children again.
The "green mile" comes second to this, these both are excellent movies.
For me, the heart of the story is forgiveness and redemption. Sophia and Squeak, Shug and her father, Albert, and Celie and her extremely traumatic past...❤

Look at how Celie is surrounded by so much love. She is now a successful business owner who owns her own home and land too! Her home is vibrant and full of people who just want to be around her. Celie is the one who brought life into Albert's home and it followed Celie when she left! Celie was finally able to flourish and blossom into the woman she was always meant to be and the reunion with her sister and children was the final piece to the puzzle! 😭❤❤❤❤

Ngl, seeing Albert at the end made me cry more because you see a changed man just happy that the sisters were reunited. He learned. So happy that in the book they actually became friends
I just love when Mister realized he did the right thing and changed his ways and eventually became friends with Celie.
I am also glad Mister learned from his horrible mistakes, and finally decided to right his wrongs, and try to make amends. I truly hope he became a better man for it. As far as him and Celie becoming friends, I'm not exactly sure that would've been the case, it may have been though. It's just that after all the horribleness Mister had caused to Celie and Nettie, tolerance and forgiveness is about the best I think they could do for him. Becoming friends with him, might have been a tad stretch too much. But who knows, they may have been friends in the end, eventually.
Read the book, Mister and Celie end up being good friends in the end. I love reading the book.

I'm a grown 31 year old man and I just sat alone in a room and watched this scene and cried like a baby.
I cannot watch this scene without crying. This is my favorite scene from any movie ever. As soon as I hear the wind chimes on the porch, I lose it. Seeing their colorful dresses flowing in the wind. This is magical. Mr finally did something right by her. And the final moment with Celie and Nettie finally back together. My heart…..
Life has a way of separating Black sisters and making us endure these long roads alone, but we find our way back to each other don't we? 💜

He did break the cycle of misogynous men stereotype from his father. His father is the one who teaches him how women should be treated as inferior. But his father is wrong. The culture or stereotypes are wrong and cruel.

That was the last time he would ever take his advice let alone bully him considering his dad probably did do that hence why he was so abusive to Celie.
He is not really evil. He only does the same he learn to do and how be like all other men.
His son can leave because he had somebodys who help them but Albert hadn't.

I love the difference in how they call out to each other! Celie is moreso excited beyond reason especially because Nettie has always been her ground,her heart,her reason to life while Nettie's cry seems heartbroken in a way because she has written to Celie countless times and finally receives a response not through letters but with love and of course the obvious they miss each other! My Gosh its been 40 yrs!! Beautiful man
One thing that makes this scene for me is the music. Can we take a moment to acknowledge the genius and talent of Mr. Quincy Jones? The music really brings the emotion to the forefront.
To watch Celie see the red and purple gowns blow in the wind, to see the beauty of that and for Celie to acknowledge that that is for her and because of her. ♥

Probably my most-watched movie of all time. Each time I cry more at every emotional moment, and there are a lot! Her reunion here with Adam is intense enough, but when you recall that Olivia was taken right out of her arms, you realise the power of that hug, the intensity of Olivia's sobs, and the impact on Celie's life, which in this moment is now complete...
How good an actress was Whoopi? Incredible. The way she does an old woman run/shuffle there, ...brilliant.

And although I’m not a fan of, Danny Glover, like, Whoopi, he should have easily won best actor. Must be because this was an all black cast. I don’t care what anyone says. It’s my opinion and I stick to that. Everyone and their grandma knows what movie should have taken the prize that year.
You won't hear any argument from me on this - it was such a travesty that this exhilarating film did not win any Oscar. Shameful thing to see.

When cinema was good. This movie taught me more than all my years in school. I could never bring myself to read the book because the movie hit me hard enough. I just couldn't imagine trying to read it because our minds paint vivid pictures, and this movie was vivid enough. Gets me everytime
I think I was 14 or 15 who I saw this (and didn’t want to) but it haunted me forever. They don’t even know how to tell stories about the human condition this powerful anymore.
Finally the sisters together and reunited, what a beautiful scene. I feel relief, after seeing so much pain on the main character. She got her happy ending, her kids, her sister, and surrounded by people who love her.
No matter how many times I watch this scene it makes me cry, so happy this movie had a happy ending.
For years I would watch this movie growing up and every time I seen this ending I'd be thinking about reuniting with my sister one day. I was five when she was born and a few months later she was placed into a sealed adoption..... Finally when I was 21 and she was 16 I found her online. A few weeks later we met up in person. It was beautiful. Last year I found my brother. I have 2 brothers left to find. I hope we all get to have a scene like this one day! 🙏 ❤

Lina, very well said!! Abuse goes beyond those directly being affected, as horrible as it is. And it's always that hope that the cycle of abuse can be broken, that keeps some of us going.
Even after all these years, this scene still wrenches my heart, and I can’t stop the tears. It’s just so so much; all of the feelings are there, and you’re just emotionally overwhelmed. It makes me miss my own sister and really treasure my connection with her. Makidada.
