Georgia girl here. My grandmother was basically given to my grandfather as well, just because he was the wealthiest black man in the community at the time. My grandmother had already started a relationship with another man but her family sent her to live with my grandfather anyway. He was much older, known to be a philanderer and was even accused of rape and murder before, and he was physically and sexually abusive to not only my grandmother but my aunts as well - their own children. One of my aunts had a child by him. My mother was spared form his abuse because her older sisters protected her as the youngest of the family. My grandfather also beat and nearly murdered my uncle as a teenager with a knife. My grandmother outlived that demon thankfully but she also had a history of abusing alcohol to cope with him, and eventually this caught up with her. She died way too soon. First saw it at age 12 on tv at 11pm and sat through the whole thing through 5am glued to the screen and sobbing and felt more emotion and spirituality in that one movie than I ever did at my own church.
The Color Purple was filmed in my hometown of Marshville, North Carolina. It was the summer of 1985 and I was 13. I would ride my bike uptown to watch them film the town scenes. They brought in tons of red dirt to cover the paved street, decorated the buildings to match the Era and even turned a light pole into what looked like a real tree. It was also very hot when they filmed. 95 plus degrees not counting the humidity. During that heat they actually made it look like the middle of winter. It looked like real ice and snow. I was lucky enough to see, Oprah, Whoopi, Glover, Fishburne and Spielberg wearing his big directors hat to keep the sun off oh him. Never forget that summer.
The way they handled the lighting throughout the whole movie deserves an award, I mean every shade of black skin in this movie, and they nailed it, they made us really see them in a way I don't think they had much experience in back then. That's just the tip of the iceberg of accolades this movie deserved.
The movie is fantastic, but I do recommend reading the book because it does fill in some blank spots in the film, like how it was known that Olivia & Adam were adopted by thw minister and how Squeak came into the picture.
Also warning to anyone reading that book for the first time, it is absolutely heart wrenching. The film has ugliness but the book is worse. Beautiful written but really hard to get through.
Nephew "the color purple" 💜 is a right of passage (in the black community). You are NOW official. So many iconic quotes from this movie. Like "beat em", "you sho is ugly", all my life iz had to fight", "until you do me right" etc etc. Auntie loved your reaction 🤎🤎🤎🖤🖤🖤
I was put up for adoption as an infant, and when I finally found my birthmom, I was 31 years old, we discovered we both thought that this was the greatest movie ever, and we both had watched the last scene over and over again.
It doesn't matter now many times you watch it, you still shed tears at those hard, emotional parts. This movie came out in 1985. Whoopie had blown up as an actor. everyone knew who she was. I ran into her in Tijuana out on the street and she was surrounded by so many people. I asked her what she was doing out there and she said, "Oh, just spending the day, doing a little shopping and sightseeing." I was there for the same.
And that dude has one of the smoothest voice to listen to. I swear, he could read a phone book and i'd listen to him for hours. The interviews with him are a joy to watch.
Maaaaaaaan...35 years later and I am *still* furious with the stodgy @ss Academy for completely snubbing this magnificent film. Eleven nominations, zero wins. Absolutely unforgivable. I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it at 14 years old and I still watch it about once a year. I never, ever grow tired of bored of it. Bro, I love how deeply this movie affected you and I felt every one of your emotions. I've lost count of how many times I have seen The Color Purple, but it still hits me deep in the feels every time. Every. Single. Time.
That was one of the most heartfelt reactions I've ever seen! I was bawling along with you! And I've watch probably 25 times over the years from when first released. My favorite movie! Thanks for keeping it real, and holding back bro!
That movie always make me cry. In the book, Mister tries to get back with with Celie. He even sits on the porch and knits with her. I think that was because after his father died, which he does in the book, Mister is free to express a softer side of himself. Also Celie was in love with Shug.
I saw The Color Purple at the theater in 1985. People wrapped around the building waiting to get in to see this movie. I knew it was going to be good because Spielberg also made Poltergeist and ET 3 years earlier. In the book all three Ceilie Shug and Mister ended up living together at the end
I cry at the part where he's riding his horse carriage passed their house and she runs out to the yard to call out to him and say that she got married to Grady, implying that she's an 'honorable woman' now, but he still rides right past her and the look of total heartbreak in our eyes when he ignores her gets me everytime
I was working as an usher at a movie theater when this came out. I had the timing down so that I did a theater check every time the dinner scene played. One of my favorite scenes in movie history.
I was a projectionist at the time. I did the same thing watching the dinner scene. I also avoided certain scenes because I would start to get the feels big time!
I just watched this movie for the first time and I am UGLY crying. Started when Shug was finally embraced by her father and just continued to cry even harder until the end of the movie. God. What an amazing movie. I can't believe how it didn't win a single Academy Award.

I remember when I saw this movie in ethics class, in high school. The whole damn class crying, even the bullies. At that moment, the teacher stopped the movie and said "Wow, deep down you have a little heart!"

Margaret Avery's (Shug) singing was done by Tata Vega, although Margaret was also a singer in real life. Interestingly, she was also a member of the Freedom Riders. I've been in love with Shug since I was about 12 and saw this movie for the first time. It still makes me cry every time I watch it. Thank you for this beautiful reaction.
Wow! You are a real one. You got it! I am really impressed with your willingness to show your feelings. This was the best review of this movie I have seen. Thanks!
This movie had a profound effect on my life as a teenager. Idk what I would do if I saw it much later in life. Once again, a ballsy reaction from you! From my perspective, this movie made our whole nation shed a tear. It helped us all grow just that little bit. It broke a lot of ground. Oprah and Whoopi had insane love and admiration everywhere they went back then, and it's stuck with them and still is. I remember it well. It was one of the few films that made me realize just how powerful a film could actually be.
This movie is definitely in my top 3. Its impossible not to cry. This movie came out when I was born and I've been watching it since I was 7. This movie is one of the goat.
One of the greatest movies ever made!!!! Hollywood didn't want to give Steven or the cast the acknowledgement because of racism, yes I said it... I'm so glad you young people and other people are seeing this movie, it brings out every emotions a person feels.

This movie is something that everyone should see at least once in their life. I saw it when I was a kid, didn't understand it or appreciate it then but I do now. It's one of the must watched movies people need to see.
I did not think I’d cry again watching you watch this movie. By the end I couldn’t stop the liquids coming out of my face/nose. 😭 God bless man! I’m very happy to experience this with you!
One of the most powerful scenes 30 minutes in and you called it saying you'd be sobbing by the end... we all were sobbing with you at the end. This is a very powerful movie, and anyone who dislikes it has no heart.
I first saw this movie in 1985 at the movies. I currently have it on CD and on demand. I watch this about once per year. I cry EVERYTIME. I even cried watching your review during the scenes that you teared up in. This movie is a masterpiece.
My favorite movie of all time. I’m 44. Watched it when I was 9. Even at 9 years old, I knew this movie was something special and would forever touch my heart.
You know I gotta give you props for reacting to this movie. Because of all the Steven Spielberg movies people skip over this one and it's glaring. Lemme hop on my laptop so i can so a proper review. I love this movie. And thanks again for reviewing it.
I've loved this movie my whole life. I always loved Celie's character.. even though I've never known the type of experiences she's had.. the way she had faith and saw all her prayers answered is so inspiring.
And that, Sir, is the power of great storytelling. Everyone needs to see this movie, at least once when they're old enough to understand the context. Great reaction. Believe me, we've all been in that emotional bubble over this movie.
I saw this movie twice upon its release here in Australia in 1985. I was fifteen years old. I remember being in fits of tears when I was walking out the first time. A couple of ushers came up to me to ask if I was okay. It just REALLY struck a chord with me and moved me beyond words. To this day, I cannot hear Quincy Jones' INCREDIBLE music without having a visceral, emotional reaction.
Oommgg bro I cried with you even tho I’ve watched this move before I feel like I cried more this time around man you are a good movie partner 😩😭😭😭😭😭😭🤧🤧
Yeah........ he made a mistake with that comment. I think he missed that point (it being her "Dad's" house)..... left to her when his sorry ass died!!!
That’s exactly what we went thru in Chicago many years ago. That night coming out of the movie theater, a line of people waiting around the block to get in. All of us crying our eyes out...people looking at us knowing they were in for an emotional night...
I enjoyed your reaction so much, I'm re-watching it again! So refreshing to see a young man emote and be touched by the humanity and inhumanity depicted in this film. You were just as entertaining as the movie. Thank you for sharing yourself with us.
One of the saddest gd movies ever made. Everyone is such an amazing actor but Whoopi really kills it,as does the little girl who also plays Celi. I love this movie. Edit: oh my god mel crying, I'm crying, we're all crying 😭
A beautiful reaction to a beautiful movie. As a young lad growing up on an island off the west coast of Scotland in the 1980s, this film left such a massive impression. It was one of those 'I'm changed forever' moments, that often pass without us really noticing at the time. It is one of the most human pieces of work I've seen to this day. A true empathy machine.
You're immensely intelligent, in your analysis. And deadly honest... And emotionally aware and invested. This is the 6th reaction video I've watched on your channel and I love your joyful upsetness so much. Thank you, man! Big hugs from France
I love how you really expressed yourself throughout the movie, we can feel like we are watching the movie with you in the same room. Thank you for showing with us your emotions and thoughts!!
Bro I'm 38 year old man and I have seen this film more than a 100 times and I have cried every time. Matter of fact Im typing this after seeing mister break up the sisters with tears rolling. If that scene don't move you love hasn't touch your soul yet. One of the most touching film I've ever seen
Omgggg you being a wreck legit made me a wreck watching your reaction!! 😭😭😭 I love this lol. *Secretly prays under breath* God please give me a man with this level sensitivity and not afraid to be emotional.. so we can bawl watching Spielberg together. 😩🙏🏾🤣

I was lucky enough to see, Oprah, Whoopi, Glover, Fishburne and Spielberg wearing his big directors hat to keep the sun off oh him. Never forget that summer.
Excellent 💖
Awesome 😊
I love a man that can show his emotions😍😍😍
Mad respect for uploading your reaction with all of the crying included. There's no shame in being touched by such an emotional story.
The way they handled the lighting throughout the whole movie deserves an award, I mean every shade of black skin in this movie, and they nailed it, they made us really see them in a way I don't think they had much experience in back then. That's just the tip of the iceberg of accolades this movie deserved.
It was based on the book of the same name, by Alice Walker. It won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. I think you can see why.
"man of you don't get out my ear lil boy" 😄
😂😂😂
Nephew "the color purple" 💜 is a right of passage (in the black community). You are NOW official. So many iconic quotes from this movie. Like "beat em", "you sho is ugly", all my life iz had to fight", "until you do me right" etc etc. Auntie loved your reaction
🤎🤎🤎🖤🖤🖤
You said it.
The redemption of Shug, the reunification of woman, children and her sister and the liberation of Celie were the most powerful moments in any film.
Dude went through the 7 stages of grief damn almost made me cry
I was put up for adoption as an infant, and when I finally found my birthmom, I was 31 years old, we discovered we both thought that this was the greatest movie ever, and we both had watched the last scene over and over again.
❤❤
This reaction is why UA-cam can be a great place.
I appreciate the fact that you allowed us to see your emotions .... definitely subscribing !
It felt like I watched it with one of my sons and yes I subscribed too.
Same
Yep. Emotion is a wonderful thing.
I don't think anybody can't help cry watching this movie
HAH GAY!!!! 😂
Don’t forget this was co-produced & composed by the legendary, Quincy Jones! 🎷
And that dude has one of the smoothest voice to listen to. I swear, he could read a phone book and i'd listen to him for hours. The interviews with him are a joy to watch.
Yea.. I said the same thing... I saw this reaction video come up and all I could think was "oh lawd.. Poor baby... Get ready!!"
The sisters separated is one of the most heartbreaking moments I’ve ever experienced watching. This movie is the best. ❤️
I think Ima read the book one day just to see how different it is from the movie
They could not show that she was a lesbian back in 84
The bit when Shug's father finally embraces her-- if you're not crying it's cuz you're dead or have no soul.
"See daddy - sinners have souls, too." 😭
I cry at the part where he's riding his horse carriage passed their house and she runs out to the yard to call out to him and say that she got married to Grady, implying that she's an 'honorable woman' now, but he still rides right past her and the look of total heartbreak in our eyes when he ignores her gets me everytime
@@gracehaven5459 That actress was able to communicate soooo much with just her eyes. It was indeed heartbreaking.
God is trying to tell you something!!!
No such thing as a soul. Her father allowed a religion to separate himself from his child. He doesn't deserve her.
I was working as an usher at a movie theater when this came out. I had the timing down so that I did a theater check every time the dinner scene played. One of my favorite scenes in movie history.
Great story.
I was a projectionist at the time. I did the same thing watching the dinner scene. I also avoided certain scenes because I would start to get the feels big time!
I think this movie came out the year I was born, but I use to love talking like the father at the dinner table his was so funny.
what was the audience reaction to the film at the time?
@@user-td6fq7or8d The dinner scene people would laugh. The happy scene at the end men and women were crying.
I just watched this movie for the first time and I am UGLY crying. Started when Shug was finally embraced by her father and just continued to cry even harder until the end of the movie. God. What an amazing movie. I can't believe how it didn't win a single Academy Award.
Loved your reaction……honest, heartfelt, humorous, and humbling. Real men cry! Truly my favorite movie. It is stunning in absolutely every way. Welcome to the club! Cheers!!
When Oprah yells, "God, help me!" it gives me chills every time. It's so horrifying and her acting there is absolutely outstanding omfg
I always cry from the time Shug opened those church doors like singing "God's Tryna Tell you Something" until the end of the movie.
I cried
When this movie first came on
She had two kids by her Father
He got me over here crying, too. Not the "ugly cry", but I'm tearing up, though.
Don't be ashamed of your tears, they come from a place of compassion and that it beautiful. One of the best films ever, I started tearing up as soon as I hit play on this video... thank you so much for reacting to this! 💜
Allowing yourself to experience your true emotions while watching this was enough to convince me that I need to subscribe. I didn't think I could love this movie any more than I already do but I now know that I can and I do.
same here
The best movie ever 😭. I still watch it to this day and still brings tears to my eyes my favorite line “you took my sister nettie away from me, you knew she was the only somebody in the world who loved me” glad u enjoyed it , seeing you cry made me cry 😢
I remember when I saw this movie in ethics class, in high school. The whole damn class crying, even the bullies. At that moment, the teacher stopped the movie and said "Wow, deep down you have a little heart!"
Even Mister had a little heart, in the end.
FINALLY SOMEONE DID A REACTION TO THIS MOVIE!!! Thank you.
It's such a heartbreaking and beautiful movie. I SOB every time I watch it. It just punches you right in the gut.
Same! Then I read the book and sobbed some more.
I have seen this movie many times, and I have never been able to stop crying when I saw it. A masterpiece of cinema and literature.
Never apologize for you tears. A man showing his heart publicly is powerful. Thank you for not hiding your feelings.
Takes a real man to acknowledge his emotions and have empathy bro, I’ve seen this movie so many times and not only well up every time but during this video lol! 👊🏾
Man...your reaction to this movie was EVERYTHING! From the disgust of her pops and Mister, to the tears shead and all the way to the praise break on God's Tryna Tell You Somethin...SUBSCRIBED. Thank you for this. My all time favorite.
I was 15 when The Color Purple hit theaters. Though I'm white. I cried. How could people treat others like that?
You had he most genuine review I have ever seen....had me crying and I've seen this movie over 100 times lol. Definitely subbing.
This is one film they'll never be able to remake. It's one of a kind! Loved that you let yourself fall so deep into the story.
I first saw this with my mom when I was 11 years old and it made a big impression. I'm 45 now and I still cry everytime I watch it.
Lmao I Was Crying While I Was Editing The Video Every Time
@@HelloMellowXVI Shit, man... no lie, I cried watching your reaction just now. Lol It's a beautiful story, written, shot, and portrayed beautifully. Respect. ✌
Over 30 years later, that ending gets me. I tear up every damn time.
Tata Vega's voice was just sublime for this film. I became a huge fan of hers after watching that film.
Wow! You are a real one. You got it! I am really impressed with your willingness to show your feelings. This was the best review of this movie I have seen. Thanks!
YOU HAVE THE BEST REACTION!!
I’d cried with you throughout the whole movie. I love this movie so much
This movie had a profound effect on my life as a teenager.
Easily the most underrated Spielberg film. This one deserves to be ranked along side films like Shawshank redemption
One of the greatest movies ever made!!!! Hollywood didn't want to give Steven or the cast the acknowledgement because of racism, yes I said it... I'm so glad you young people and other people are seeing this movie, it brings out every emotions a person feels.
I wanna thank you for pure emotions in your videos. All day laughing and crying with your reactions... Really like that) ☺️🙌🏻
I'm commenting again. I looked to find reactions to this movie and nothing compares to yours because you reacted to the entire movie from start to finish. You put emphasis on so many pivitol and emotional scenes. And you wore your heart on your sleeve and reacted with honesty and rawness and this is why I watch reaction channels, for reactions like yours.
Oh man, I'm watching with you and crying too. I come back to this film from time-to-time, but it's never easy to watch. I have tissues on standby.
Man bro, I haven't cried to this movie in years, and you got me over here crying!! Love seeing the emotion my dude and yeah this is one of my fav movies of all time! Had to have seen it over 40 times! great upload man, heres a like lol
Loving this channel, can't wait for the next one.
I have literally never wanted to jump through the screen and hug someone so badly before in my life. Aww, bubbas!! Lol you’re adorable. Uhh... subscribed. I need a palate cleanser, Goodfellas reaction it is :P
STOP YOU ARE MAKING ME CRY TOO!! Thank you for sharing your reaction with us! I feel like I have always known this movie and seen it so often but seeing you experience it for the first time was like experiencing it for the first time myself!
When you danced during the church scene! 🤣👍🏽 You can't help but feel the holy spirit in that scene!
I can't even count all the times I've seen this movie and I am still on the floor sobbing every single time. It was CRIMINALLY underrated at the time and to this day it breaks me every time. Such a beautiful, beautiful film.
Not a dry eye in the place.
You got me over her SOBBING!!!! And I’ve seen this movie a hundred times!!! 😂
I always sob at the sisters scene and Shug going in the church. I’m still angry it didn’t win best picture. It’s the GOAT
"She really moved back in with this dude?" Huh? That was the house her "father" left her.
Yeah........ he made a mistake with that comment. I think he missed that point (it being her "Dad's" house)..... left to her when his sorry ass died!!!
Not her "father", her real dad. He owned the house and the store that the "father" took over but never actually was entitled to.
Yeah but I get why they get confusing because they’re all the same plantation style homes with wrap around porches
That house was left 2 celie and nettie when thier mom died "paw" was just there
That’s exactly what we went thru in Chicago many years ago. That night coming out of the movie theater, a line of people waiting around the block to get in. All of us crying our eyes out...people looking at us knowing they were in for an emotional night...
As the eldest of 4 sisters, this movie hit home. I have never cried more...a deep sobbing. This is the most amazing movie.
Do "Fried Green Tomatoes!" WOW WOW WOW! You will love it
Yes on this one!
Yes! “Fried Green Tomatoes” is also a good laugh/cry drama.
Yes I've been trying to find some Fried Green Tomatoe reactions and I haven't seen any...This is the first Color Purple reaction I've seen.
Amazing suggestion. Remarkable film.
Yes yes! Fried Green Tomatoes!
Wonderful!!! Hello Scotland!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're immensely intelligent, in your analysis. And deadly honest... And emotionally aware and invested. This is the 6th reaction video I've watched on your channel and I love your joyful upsetness so much. Thank you, man! Big hugs from France
The author was on set the whole movie
I love how you really expressed yourself throughout the movie, we can feel like we are watching the movie with you in the same room. Thank you for showing with us your emotions and thoughts!!
Bro I'm 38 year old man and I have seen this film more than a 100 times and I have cried every time. Matter of fact Im typing this after seeing mister break up the sisters with tears rolling. If that scene don't move you love hasn't touch your soul yet. One of the most touching film I've ever seen
The sadness beauty horror and humor in this movie is director Stephen Spielberg at the peak of his powers.
Omgggg you being a wreck legit made me a wreck watching your reaction!! 😭😭😭 I love this lol.
*Secretly prays under breath* God please give me a man with this level sensitivity and not afraid to be emotional.. so we can bawl watching Spielberg together. 😩🙏🏾🤣
awww man, I thought you were gonna stay all jokey jokey through this but when then scenes hi, it HIT YOU!!! Soo emotional I've seen this dozens of times but it still hits.
bro....i was teary eyed just like you ....i read this book in high school and this film did it justice
And in the end Celie and nettie are wearing The Color Purple truly a triumphant film that will never get old
I remember watching this when it first came out and agree it's an amazing movie, although it's a movie I could only bring myself to watch once. I sobbed the hardest I ever have watching this movie. I sobbed again just watching the clips you showed. Thank you for your emotional reaction to this movie.
