RIGHT?! especially the bit at the end where he says, "I'll see you in Hell, 'Boss.'" That complete condescension in his tone at the end says it all on how he feels about the legendary soldier...
What doesn't make sense about him? He's the commander of XOF, which was the secret mirror to FOX during the 60's. He wants to create a world where English is wiped off the face of the Earth in order to fight Zero. He infected Zero with the vocal cord parasite after Ground Zeroes. I don't see the confusion.
Skullface is the worst villain ever created by Hideo Kojima, he makes zero sense and when everything is done the player still isn't sure about what he was trying to do. His motivations only become semi-clear after he's defeated after listening to all the cassette tapes and even then is incomplete. Why does he hate Zero? Zero had nothing to do with his childhood so why does he have such a personal hatred towards him? Why does he hate Big Boss? How exactly was he going to acquire a personal arsenal of mini-nukes? Why would any sane individual follow a man that wants to destroy the English language? Afterall, XOF was an American outfit. And, the questions keep going. Terrible character.
Similar to Gene from MPO, Skull Face is a horribly underrated villain. 1) like all MGS villains, the true motivations of the villains are not revealed until after their defeat, usually by supporting characters or by codec conversations. 2) he has no personal hatred against Zero - he simply has a motivation, and stands in the way of that. He only hates Zero because, well, he does. That's human nature. We've all meant people who we just hate - Zero is an evil man, Skull Face knows that, and therefore hates him. 3) he says to Paz that he doesn't hate Big Boss, he just stands in his way. 4) the personal arsenal of nukes was never well explained, but it has something to do with Metallica Archaea (whatever that is). The idea is that Skull Face exhibits a sense of charisma and, yes, is actually compelling when he appears on screen. This scene is powerful - excellent dialogue, excellent visuals, and Skull Face has a cool voice and a cool appearance. Like Gene from MPO, he exhibits qualities of an excellent villain - even if not to the caliber of Liquid Snake or The Boss.

I've posted this a few times now 🙈 but I read that Zero admired him as an assassin and military tactician so him not being a brute warrior like the other villains makes sense. Also, his plan was going well until someone with a greater lust for revenge turned up, which clearly shocked him. "Whooooo!!!?" Cheesy as it is his shock and surprise is a great reflection of how deep his hatred and desire for revenge is. So deep that someone else surpassing it wasn't possible in his mind. If you miss this then it seems like he made a silly error but it's really just him having confidence in the unmatchable amount of poison in his heart. Granted, still an error, but in his mind never a silly one. My only wish was obviously more screen time and less hammy/cheesy. I'd have preferred it if he remained dark and unafraid of death. Cold til the end. With the same attitude you see when he delivers, "Rest in peace this time." (2:58) The way he looks at Venom when he says that is subtle, scary, and perfect.

We only have the right to demand him to give us a well polished gameplay, but when it comes to story ideas nobody has the right to dictate him. While I understand you disappointment because you didn't get what you wanted, that doesn't mean it was badly written as it is. I'll say you should try to connect the dots with the rest of the series to make sense of why the story was the way it was. I just appreciate Kojima didn't re-tell us of events we already knew about from MGS4 and MGS1 regarding Big Boss' backstory and choose to be creative.
+Miyakolover Excellent reply, it's nice to see that some people don't live in a "world" of warped reality.
