i've been using Zinsser BIN for maybe twenty years now and it has never disappointed me. if you want to seal in smells and keep the wood look, regular old shellac works a treat most of the time. shellac is fairly easy to repair as well, at least compared to a polyurethane, though it is less durable for a wear surface. the upshot is that poly sticks to shellac just fine, so you can seal with shellac and protect with poly when needed.

    Stuff is great!!!
Used in a comercial environment, like office space.
Everyone starts crying bloody murder cause of the smell.
    But it sure does work.

Just typed in how to paint wood paneling and your video popped up - perfect timing! I have a big wall of 1960s wood paneling to paint, plus custom wood built-in closet/drawer combos, and lots & lots of stained/varnished trim & wood doors. It sounds like Zinsser BIN is going to be my new best friend lol. Question - what type of paint did you use when you painted your paneling? A satin??? Please and thanks!

So happy to help! I used a latex based paint in egg shell finish.

If your viewers have the option of obtaining Diamond Vogel water-based primer it is the best ever. I used one coat of primer on my whole basement paneling and one coat of Benjamin Moore top coat. It lasted at least 15 years before I moved. The house I moved to was building the seventies and had the dark stain and all the doors and woodwork from that time. I did the same prime base coat and one top coat on all the woodwork and doors and 12 years later I don't have a single chip or bleed through

I agree 100% with your analysis of stain killers. I was a painter for 25 yrs. Water based sealers never worked for sealing knots or tannin bleed thru. Oil based is better but for serious knots and tannin bleed the alcohol based Zinsser is the only sealer that works. On the downside the fumes are so bad I used to get headaches everytime I worked with it. Good ventilation and a ventilator is a must. Great advice ! 👍

Thank you so much! My first house has it and I’m scared of termites but fell love with the look trying to treat this wood so I can lay comfortably

Thank you so much! I also have a rental property that was heavily smoked in, against the lease agreement terms. I'm trying to get it cleaned up well enough for family and will be priming every surface imaginable.

It's always great to have a "real" review of a DIYer's experience. Shellac is expensive and the information on how far a gallon will go is HUGE information. Will be priming wood walls (ship lap or tongue & groove) and your provided information is priceless. Going shellac all the way. Thank you.

Zinsser now makes a odorless oil base primer. I experienced the same exact thing. I will never waste my money on Kills again. BIN is the very best!

Talk about timing. I am just about to do my living room and kitchen remodel. The living room has old paneling on all walls but the fireplace section, so this was some GREAT info. TYSM.

Thank you!! I am hoping this suggested product will work as a primer for painting over T1-11 paneling!! (have you tried it on this? What kind of overcoat paint is compatible?). Love my house but the original owner must have owned the T1-11 company - every room is adorned in it. I like the smell of shellac, actually - so that won't be an issue - although, good ventilation will be a must.

I found Zinsser BIN Advanced White Shellac-Based Primer at Ace Hardware but at the BOTTOM of the CAN it says, "Water-based" How can it be both??. Do I need to buy the Shellac-based / Oil-based shellac?? And HOW HEAVY A COAT? 1 coat or 2? Thx in advance if you're able to answer. ~Mary in Oregon

ZIN bin is twice the price compared to the cover stain. Do they perform the same in terms of covering smoke smell? We're on a time sensitive project. Do you have to wait 2 weeks for the cover stain to work or can you do your top coat in the same day?

    • @WhitneyBaldwin
      @WhitneyBaldwin  5 місяців тому

The BIN shellac is worth the price. It’s also very thin and will stretch for coverage making it almost the same price since you only need one coat. It dries in a half hour and can be painted over the same day. It’s the best at sealing in smoke smells.

odorless paint thinner makes the oil based paint much thinner. thin down 10%.

Not really really well. I lightly sanded it then wiped it down. Nothing crazy!
