If the Makayona grows rhizomes, how would u propagate them?
@@debibaughman985 a few of the Calathea had those little potato rhizomes, but I never propagated them. I would imagine they’d sprout in some damp moss or soil. But I’m not sure if they can propagate. They might just be for water storage or something.
I know you posted this a while ago, but I really appreciate it regardless. I was hoping to prop my coleus before the winter hits and I lose it outside. Have a great day!
Hi Paul. I love any plant with red leaves so the one you showed on here will need to go on my list of plants to keep an eye out for. I've put a few plants into water lately simply because they weren't doing well in the medium I had them in. About 6 months ago I cut the top off a happy plant that is growing outside our kitchen window and potted it into soil but it clearly was not happy so it's in water now and perked up a lot. Also moved a Syngonium from leca to water, brought some more larger spider plant babies in from the garden and looking for any other of my houseplants that might appreciate being in water. Water culture is the way to go (imo and for a lot of plants).
@@renatecormick7399 yay!!!! I agree!!! I have such good luck with it! So glad it’s going well over there!!! Have a wonderful day!!! 😃🪴
2 questions 1) why don't you play with doing live arrangements in water? 2)what are the causes of water in water culture to go stinky rotten?
@@humility-righteous-giving hey there. I have some cool arrangements in WC and used to sell little rooted arrangements. Such a cool look in water. Causes for stinky water are usually centered around rot. If any roots or leaves die and decompose in the water, it creates a great environment for a rot situation. Sometimes algae overgrowth in the jar can make the water yucky. So I try to make sure the water is always clean.
@@paultheplantparent2702 do you have a video in regard to keeping the water in good condition? from the bit of research i did i saw that too often water changes stunts growth,so whats the best practice? perhaps there is some things to add to vase so it becomes a small water ecosystem that has some small organisms maintaining water condition? do you keep and have videos on WC rooted arrangements? (rooted WC arrangements is my main plant interest at the moment) it also excites me the idea of have a pothos climbing from water culture to grow large leaves, perhaps on a lucky bamboo wrapped in terry cloth to wick water to entice the pothos to grab on with its air roots so it grows larger leaves, or maybe on some other even taller stalked nice house plant to use as a pothos support?
@ that sounds like a really fun project!!!! Can’t wait to hear how it turns out. I talk about keeping the water clean in a lot of videos but I don’t think I have one video about the water specifically. I have done that have grown algae and those plants are doing great, surprisingly. That alone is like a little ecosystem. But I’m interested to hear how your idea pans out. 😃👍🏼🪴

Hello watching and support from glecious tv your new friend
Welcome! 🙂
Hey Paul, I have been trying an experiment which is working out very well. All my plants are in semi hydro, but like yourself and everyone else with tons of plants, sometimes I would miss watering something and a pot would dry out. I use a combination of small lava rock, perlite, and a little bit of leca. What I have been doing for a few months is to add some sphagnum to that mix, the amounts depending on the plant species. What I have found is that if a pot dries out, the sphagnum holds just enough moisture to protect the plant from dehydration. After seeing plants with wicks, and plants in yarn, I thought this might be a good balance. It has been working out great and I'm seeing the growth of leaves and flowers.
@@dominicflorio5708 That’s awesome!!!!! Sounds like a great way to keep some moisture in there. 😃😃😃👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🪴🪴🪴
Can I root hydrangeas that way, caladiums?
@@susanarojo3906 I’m pretty sure hydrangeas need to be rooted by semi hardwood stems and caladiums need the tuber. 😞. Rex begonias, peperomia, African violets and most succulents can use leaves.
And the yarn? Was it just a chunky type? Doesn't looked chained either. Thanks for your vids and info.
@@RonBruce-x3f I’ve used a really thick acrylic that works too. No need to chain it up since it’s pretty thick. Thank YOU for watching and engaging. 😃😃😃

@@AS-lm9xm it’s definitely an option. I haven’t tried them in perlite but some do well in semi hydro (lava or Leca). 😃👍🏼
Paul, are you still using the acrylic yarn? I have found that some of mine are doing great in it. Do you have any nutrients in the water for your succulents? I want to move mine to water because they are drying out and losing leaves.
@@csept yup. I have a whole lot of plants growing nicely in acrylic yarn. Even orchids and succulents. The succulents in water weren’t getting any feed for months. They were doing great! I decided to add some Nutricote pellets to the water and they’re doing great. I’ve been experimenting with different fertilizers. Bettergro orchid plus I use for all kinds of plants too. Another good one is Maxigro. What are you growing in yarn? I love hearing success stories. 😃😃😃
Hi Paul. I have to agree with you that those tiny flowers on Discidia ruscifolia are gorgeous. Only down side is that they drop the flowers and make a bit of mess. I took some photos recently and they look amazing when enlarged, such perfectly formed blooms, you can't help loving them.

How do you clean algae off roots?

@@Pixelated_Moon you that happens sometimes. It was a surprise to me too. Excited for you and your new plant baby.
Hi Paul. Every time I see broms being grown indoors it kind of makes me smile. Mind you, a couple of days ago the gardeners were doing their thing around our house (we live in a retirement village) and when I went outside to see what they were doing while they were off for their lunch break I nearly cried. They had ripped out a whole area of broms which kind of needed pruning back but I thought it was a bit heavy handed. I thought I would rescue some, so my husband and I filled a large bag, some had branched out in three directions etc. I was thinking of selling them on FB Marketplace because there would have been several hundred dollars worth of plants there but instead asked my daughter if she would like them. Her eyes nearly popped when she saw the bag overflowing with gorgeous red centred broms. I hate to see beautiful plants being treated like a disposable item so I'll have to keep an eye out for the gardeners next time they're in my area of the village. Sorry for the epic saga but I had to tell you because I thought of you at the time this was going on and the bare rooted brom in this video reminded me of what happened. Back to this video and you using the moss for different plants, I wondered whether you have used this method for rooting cuttings of jade plants instead of just water and if there would be any advantage in using moss.
@@renatecormick7399 you and I are the same!!!! I would have been right there grabbing them all. Such a shame how they just toss them. For a jade, I’ve propped in moss before. It did fine, but it dries out pretty quickly so I had to keep an eye on it. I’m sure there are benefits to the air spaces in the moss for root growth too. Water is just easier for us. 😃. Thank you so much for your message. It’s definitely a story I can relate to. 😃🪴

@@paultheplantparent2702 They really are forgiving, thankfully!! Haha Sometimes life gets in the way and I lapse in watering.
Growing plants in acrylic yarn has been a game changer for me! You have saved so many of my plants with this method. Just bought in my plants for the fall and I have some plants that are in soil that I plan on moving to either leca or acrylic yarn. Best idea ever!
@@csept this is so awesome. That’s my experience too. So happy you find value in it as well. 😃😃😃
