- I played Pokemon Emerald to see how much money the game would let you collect - without using any of the "money farming" methods (Match Call, recurring items, etc.) If you played the game optimally trying only to make the most money - what is the net value of your cash + items? Let's find out!

Technically speaking, the legendary pokemon battles are non-repeatable, and thus could be argued to be fair game for pay day.
Was looking for that. I agree.
Some games actually respawn the legendaries if you KO instead of capture. However, the condition to respawn requires beating the Elite 4 again. So in this challenge, legendaries do technically become non-repeatable since the E4 aren't.

I'm pretty sure PayDay works on wild Pokemon, so while using it on random encounters would be banned according to the no repeatable methods rule, using it on the legendaries would be fine.
He specifically states that fact in the video. He only uses it on trainers.

Well, their introductory paragraph on the pokemon wiki says:
"Team Rocket ... was a criminal organization set to *steal* other people's Pokémon, ... If you are able to obtain 3 PP Ups or a PP Max, you can max out the PP for Meowth’s Pay Day (if it’s profitable) to use even more against Steven’s team
Actually yeah, you're right. PP Ups and PP Maxes both sell for 4900, so it'd be optimal to use 1 PP Max. That gives an additional 12 uses to Pay Day, meaning you'd get 12000 back if you're able to use all of them, which leads to a profit of 7100. Even if you can't use all of them though, you'd still only need to use 5 extra at minimum to turn a profit.
@@honchdreigon606you can also use a leppa berry to get 10.000 for the price of a mere 10, and if meowth is weak enough to need more pp you can manually use more leppa berries to give him 10 more pps

@@Darkytz Damn, I didnt think of that, that’s a great idea, the only problem is that it’s super rng dependent, but if the stars align it could be the best way to do it (sadly the move deleted can’t help that much since surf and waterfall and I think also strength is needed to get to Steven to begin with, and covet is also necessary to steal items)
@@cristobalpinochet should be worked on a bit tho, some moves don't get used from assist. So they could be used as well. And given the amount of possible assists, you'd most likely run out of HP against steel and rock types before winning, but I'm sure with the right amount of tail whips and such you could probably get a whole lot of cash from the battle. If I had more time, I'd find the theoretical limit for this battle, as it is so iconic and might be the biggest money stack in any version of the games

The master ball usage on a Lotad is pure gold
28:49 the first pokemon you show to either of those npc is guaranteed to be record breaking, since there isn’t a size to compare them to. The second one you show them has to be bigger than the first.
skitty can learn charm, psych up, and assist, so you can charm opponents to -6 attack, psych up, and copy meowoth's pay day with assist. this will cut your damage output to 1/4x and drastically increase profit per battle
for pp considerations you can breed more meowths and skitties. in some of the later battles you can basically go through 120 pay day uses per battle, juicing your returns a lot
Can't wait to see the Johto games, where your mom has a bank account she lets you use, and you've got two gym runs before the postgame hits.

The other problem is, would he consider collecting interest to be a repeatable source of income? I know, it sounds weird to say when it is one of the biggest ways to earn money in reality, but as far as the rules he sets for these challenges, I legit think he'd ban it as it is infinite income in theory.
2:50 it increases the MONEY that you have but it doesn't increase your NET WORTH. The potion is an asset that is accounted for in your net worth.

You could maybe breed meowths and have meowths of various levels. this might make a profit even considering removing the other mons from the daycare
Yep, and then reset battles as you get to 20/20 on paydays with the meowths, this would also be a lot easier on battles where you don’t need skitty as well
If you grind the pokemon you put in the day care to level 100 first before putting them in, it will only cost 100 to take them out, since they will not gain any levels.

One thing missed I can think about is giving meowth a leppa berry against steven and having another pokemon hold the amulet coin to switch in and out (partaking in the battle)
This would give 10 extra uses of payday (so long as steven has enough pokemon and hp to take 30 paydays)

In the Safari Zone Area 6 you can encounter Miltank who are guaranteed to be holding a Moomoo Milk, 250 Pokedollar sell price. As you have the 30 Safari Balls you could argue that you wasted money by not catching as many as possible.
Could’ve picked up Thief at the Slateport Museum to steal all four Oran Berries.

This reminds me of my 110% run of Fallout 4. I have to do the most profitable thing every time too, but not caps wise. If there's 2 options for a unique quest reward but also a really hard to do and niche way to get both, you absolutely have to get both. I have to beat the entirety of the 2nd biggest dlc for the game before meeting the first faction
My thoughts on the metronome getting pay day is that it becomes easier with RNG manipulation. Even so, it’s easier but would still take way longer since it still needs set up every fight/turn.

If you change the pokemons in the daycare for a Meowth to get Meowth eggs you can have more PP in Payday to use in the battles that requires more than 20, considering each payday gives you 1000$ it compensates the price of taking both of your pokemon out of the daycare (and a Pokeball for a Ditto because the Meowth is male)
Does payday still work if you attack your own pokemon with it ? I mean in double battles

How about a Bezos run of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (And the DLCs if you have them)? There is no money cap, there is a free sidequest in Kitakami that nets 1,000,000 Pokédollars, and many, many, trainers to battle and free held items to pick up. Edit: Although you would have to avoid picking up the glittering item nodes as they respawn every day. Oh also, if you do the DLCs, you want a full team and a Thiefer to take the held items of like, every Blueberry Trainer.
Technically there is a way to make even more money after getting meowth. If you level up Sktty and Castform at level 100 you'll lose less money by getting them back from the daycare. Afterwards, if you head to the Desert Underpass near Fallarbor Town and catch a Ditto, then you can bring your Meowth there with a Ditto and get two Meowth that can learn Payday so that you earn more money from Steven's battle, which probably is the only battle that will make you use the entire PP of Pay day, but even if very tedious you should be able to make a little profit by getting those Pokémon in the day care and using a Pokeball to catch Ditto.
You have to catch a Ditto as that traded meowth can only be male unfortunately.
The part where you stall, use Rain Dance repeatly, and get growled at just so you can Covet AND Payday had me laughing so hard. The min-maxing you achieve in these videos is so entertaining!

If you ever harvested any leppa berries/ethers and sold them, you lost money. By giving them to Meowth you would have been able to keep using payday in the final fight
Here's another tiny optimization you could have done: Wild Skitty in Emerald have a 5% chance to hold a Leppa berry. So that's an extra $10 of value you could have gotten when catching Skitty. Of course, a 5% chance on a 2% encounter sounds miserable, but that's what you have to do to maximize profit.
And then there's 11-y-o me becoming a millionaire by farming the elite four for exp. I wanted to complete the pokedex and a lot of pokemon needed evolving. I actually maxed my starter's level doing this. To this day this is the only time I've ever gotten a pokemon to lvl 100. I usually reset after winning to use new pokemon
You could have killed all the legendaries with Meowth using pay day
I don't know how much of a difference it would make since I don't know if Pay Day has a cap but there's always the option of burning your Meowth so it deals less damage allowing it to use it multiple times
try getting the absolute max amount of money possible. Fill your pc. fill your bag, fill your party with items, fill your boxes with pokemon holding items. Get the max money threshold.

I think you should not only allow, but require trainer rematches.
The reason Wally gives you more money each time is because money is calculated based off the trainer class and base stats of the trainer's last Pokemon and because trainers use different teams when you rematch them, up to 4 rematches.
You should be required to use the Match Call until you've fought every variation of a team and then you are not allowed to rebattle that trainer anymore. Another benefit of this is that there are items that later versions of their team hold that you can't get any other way. Match Call is one way to get Smoke Ball and the only way to get SilverPowder, Black Belt, and Dragon Fang.

So, upon beating the Trick Master's final floor, you get access to a pp max. There's another in the magma hideout.
A PP max sells the same as the price of a single pp up, but delivers 3x the power.
Therefore, using a PP max on your meowth is worth more than selling it, as it would give you the option to use 32 pay days in stevens fight instead of 20.

Thank you for doing the conversion at the end. The currency or Pokémon has always been a pet peeve of mine, as it's supposed to be Pokéyen not Pokédollars, as the horizontal slashes are very close to the ¥ as opposed to the $ vertical slash. As yen is/was about 100 yen to the dollar when Pokémon released, it's always been simple enough for me to see "a basic pokeball is $1" as opposed to "omg I can't believe this dude gave a kid $300 for beating him in a Pokémon fight", it just never made sense that way.

Using a Smeargle found in Artisan Cave you can Sketch Meowth’s Pay Day in a double battle. That’d enable you to get more money out of the Steven fight and any other fight you use all 20 of your Pay Days.

I'm pretty sure in the Steven fight you could make even more money by catching 5 Smeargles in Artisan Cave, and then have each of those Smeargle Sketch Payday from Meowth (you just have to find 1-5 Double Battles where they're going to be able to survive long enough to Sketch) - then in the Steven fight you can turn 20 Paydays into 120 for an extra 100,000 pokedollars.
i would argue that legendary encounters are not repeatable so paydaying them would be entirely valid under the rules.

Giving Meowth a Leppard berry before Steven, and having the amulet coin on another pokemon would give you another 10 uses off pay day for the price of one berry. Also, the berry masters wife gives one berry each time you tell her something, and though that is repeatable, some of the berries are one offs depending on what you say

Having to buy pokeballs and sell them back at a 40 percent loss after making a certain amount of money is basically taxation. You're paying a 40% income tax after a certain amount of money made. You would be paying 50% if it wasn't for the premier Ball tax loophole. True sigma grindset.

You can actually earn more money before getting Meowth in the post game, though that may require some bending of rules, depending on how strict you are.
Pokemon Box Ruby and Sapphire gives you a Skitty Egg after you deposit 500 Pokemon into it. This special Skitty learns Pay Day.
Other than requiring the usage of an external game / hardware, the other problem is that for Pokemon Emerald, you need to enter the Hall of Fame to be able to deposit into Pokemon Box.
Workaround? Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire can deposit immediately into Pokemon Box once you receive the PokeDex. If you allow trading for that Egg, you can get Pay Day Skitty with just one Badge in Pokemon Emerald.

Pokemon can do more than retain items. My perspective is that pokemon themselves can retain value even if it is not liquid. With 510 EVS, divided among six stats, and each supplement providing 10 EVS, you could potentially feed a single pokemon 51 vitamins and several PP ups, making that single pokemon worth over 500,000. Some might argue that not being able to sell them is a deal breaker, but i feel that my very expensive and pampered dragonite qualifies as a private jet. My lapras is a yacht. My snorlax is a california king with bamboo linens. My rapidash is a world class race horse.
In the oceanic museum you see a grunt turning around he gives you the thief TM so thats another stealing move

You can apparently obtain a skitty with pay day from Pokemon Box Ruby & Sapphire.
Since that requires a separate game, that is probably banned though.
It would offer a lot more money in the early game and give you access to that 6th oran berry from the guy on the cruise ship.
