Cane Corso PUBERTY! WATCH OUT!

  • Personally the most difficult phase for me with my Cane Corso was not puppyhood it was puberty. All of the sudden my Cane Corso stopped listening. My Cane Corso started acting out and getting into things he previously never would have. Here is my experience and hopefully it can help you guys out as well.

We successfully got through this with Hooch (Unneutered Male, Formentino Cane Corso), but it was challenging. Afterwards, he became amazingly obedient again. He just turned 9 yrs last week, so we’re in the senior phase, which is showing some new changes in his behavior: obviously lower energy, selective listening and random grumpy growling (sometimes while wagging his nub/tail). There’s no information on senior Cane Corso behavior changes so we’re figuring it out as we go. Thank for the great videos!

Every dog I've ever owned, male and female, has went through that phase and it SUCKS!!! But just like Jason said, train the hell out of em beforehand and when your dog finally gets through that phase it'll be smooth sailing from there. I grew up with dogs my entire life and have known about the Cane Corso since I was 15 and have wanted one ever since. I'm 33 now and just got my first one. I definitely had the resources and space to get one earlier but I wanted to be certain that I was up to the task beforehand because of the exact same reason Jason talks about on this channel. Keep up the good work man!

I had a lab pit mix and during his adolescence his energy levels grew and his anxiety grew. He did not like being home alone so I invested in doggy daycare and two 1 hour walks. It’s still frustrating but he chilled a little after his second birthday

Hi Jason - pausing the vid to do as requested :-) So, YES, adolescent changes everything. In the case of my Estrela Mountain Dog, she suddenly breached the "invisible boundaries" I had set up for her: Our rental house has no fence, but she had always respected the boundaries of the land. As soon as that 6 month mark was reached, though, poof, off she went (not totally off the land, but nearly), barking like crazy at the neigbor's Portuguese Mastiff. She eventually came back to me, but argh, it took some yelling. What I did to counteract this was to socialize her specifically to that one dog. We spent hours together, me walking both dogs simultaneously, and putting them through obedience drills. This did the trick, as she's not so super-hyper-alerted any more when she hears or sees or smells "big bro" now. So, in essence: obedience - socialisation - and more socialisation. Wishing you guys a great week! And best of luck to all teenage-dog owners out there - it WILL PASS, eventually, and we'll all sail into the calmer waters of canine adulthood...

Such great content as always! We are due to get a Corso puppy soon and videos like these help better prepare us for what to expect during the first year of the puppy.
And I am really glad you brought up using an E-Collar. I was debating this with myself to or not to use the tool. Seems like it is the way to go, especially for recall.
    Thank you again!

My bullmastiff is 10 months old and 140 lbs, in the last two months the attitude has gone through the roof... I basically just go back to basics with him. Ok you don't wanna listen, cool, we get the long lead and work like it's new all over again. It's annoying but I won't give him the option to not listen.

Another good one Jason. It's like raising kids, at puberty it is crucial to keep structure, be patient, and realise that there are times when your kid would piss of the Dalai Lama. You have to remain calm and pick your battles while keeping in mind that the behavour is temporary.

Fully agree with everything said, I have trained a number of family German Shepherds and it’s always the same thing ... from 3months to 6months it’s unreal what they learned... everyone is in awe ... then around 9months bam... it’s like they get amnesia... everything but the most basic commands is gone! It can get depressing, but you just double down on training and grind away till 14 months or so... then mine seem to “remember” their training and things get so much easier.

I have an e collar and it’s awesome ! I’ve used it for my Swiss White Shepard for 5 yrs now and I don’t even have to use any level shock I just use beep warning sound and she focuses immediately n she loves putting the collar on as she knows it means time to run around on the 5 acres and play and work. The reason before people start with negative comments I live in Australia n in my yard we have massive brown and black snakes deadly if she tries to chase or bite one it saves her life ! I d rather shock her away from the snake an she lives then lose her , we also have kangaroos and when she was on heat she would chase them they can gutt your dog or drown them in the dam pushing dog under. I think as long as people are trained how to use them e collars are a fantastic tool!

Trained our current shepherd using E-collar. As with any aversive never correct what you haven't taught. The buzz or beep can remind what the shock once enforced. Praise Praise Praise when they get it right. Don't call dog's name give a command, once ! The little pamphlet which came with E-collar was chock full of good ideas, very useful. BW is easily the best trained Cane on youtube, kudos for the good job you've done, more training allows more freedom equals more of the world you can share and enjoy.

Well explained. Straight up we adopted a 2 yr old Caucasian Ovcharka enough said. He’d been passed around to 3 other homes prior. I straight up got nipped I don’t know how many times until he was able to trust me. It’s a slow process and requires lots of patience while still enforcing your rules. I also agree with the e collar. Ultimately if it’s between your dog getting hit by a car running into the street or getting zapped, That’s a no brainer. There’s an awesome trainer who teaches the remote collar method really well. Upstate Canine Academy. I highly recommend. I watch a lot of his training methods and his whole slogan is there are no bad dogs.

E collar on tone or vibrate. I started mine with it and at 14 months old it’s second nature to him. He sits and waits to get it on before going out. Whether it’s ignoring commands or just distracted...It gets focus back to me. A simple, not hurtful tone or vibrate gets his attention. Results/opinions vary but it works well for us.

My Boxer. Just before she would go into heat would go outside to do business and when I would call her in she would get to the door then you could watch her whole facial expression change, her eyebrows would go up and her eyes would widen then she would bolt and run around with the zoomies. Weather permitting I would leave her outside until she was begging to come in and we would have an obedience review. We would go over all the commands, I would praise her as we reviewed, then she would get to come inside. She was a velcro dog so she understood why we had the drill which was about twice each heat, along with me taking her out on lead sometimes during this time if I knew she would have to be back inside soon. Sometimes when I had her on lead she would walk around and smell everything like if she took long enough I would cave and take her off lead. She was clever and stubborn, she just didn't realize her momma was 10x the clever AND stubborn LOL. I could out wait her stubborn until her bladder took over her stubborn streak. We just walk around and talk about how beautiful everything was she was sniffing. She would give sighs like "Ok you win sighs" LOL Hormones are rough on both the dog and the owner! We have door handles rather than knobs and she learned to let herself out, so we had to start locking the doors.

She cried and whined all night and day!!!

My boy will chase anything on the ground that moves. It was gecko and lizard season. He had a HUGE fenced lot. This really helps to let him chase them. Perhaps that is not good but his prey drive is extremely high. He tires himself out until he is ready for a big snore session. When he can't chase them, I give him a new toy. It keeps him busy for hours. Next option, just leave him alone and let him lick himself. I would suggest a walk but if there is any chance he can smell something that he may interpret as a female heat cycle, you may not be able to control him. This is just the way it is folks if your boy is ballzy.

My first mastiff breed was a bull mastiff...and was what puberty looked liked in a large breed dog....long story short he had his way with a couple of palates balls...I now have a presa canario...who is a week away from 7 months...and I'm much better prepared for the next few months..lucky puberty doesnt last as long with dogs as it does with humans lol

Labrador retriever. She delays on commands, she will do them but reluctant. Recall takes more time. She listens but with a delay.

At what age would this start? My female just turned 2 on the 12th. She listens pretty good, at what age do you think adolescent stage begins?
