    Peel and stick is considered permanent, you shouldn't ever have to remove it. When re-roofing you just put a new, nailed on underlayment of your choice over it. But yeah, getting shingles off it can be a problem, best to do that on a chilly morning (if you live where there's chilly mornings)

      The last time I had to take some off of a roof we couldn’t get it off the OSB. We ended up repairing all the OSB on the entire roof.

    Here in Miami Dade they found exactly what you are saying about peel and stick. So, they allow synthetic under the peel and stick.

    That's crazy! Last I knew peel and stick is for indoors not outdoors.

    Around window frames in siding would you use peel and stick directly to the wood frame and sheathing, or would you use peel and stick over 60minute paper? Doesnt wood need paper because it expands and contracts and needs to breath and would peel and stick cause wood to sweat if directly applied for waterproofing window frames?

    Manufacturers recommend not installing ice shield over nominal sheeting boards. EPDM or TPO with 1/2" recovery board for that install. That roof was doomed for failure due to the low slope from the beginning. Install ice shield over plywood only and install synthetic underlayment over to keep shingles from sticking. If that roof was plywood then you could install a SA roll roof material .

    That’s ice and water shield, and it’s code here in Indiana. Also up here slated sheeting isn’t really all that uncommon

    That’s Ice and Water shield. Here in the NE United States it is required by code. Also 1x6 boards are commonly found on homes from the 50s and 60s. Putting Ice and water alone on a roof here during the dry in will keep the property dry for at least 6 months. It is a far more superior product to any felt and is manufacture recommend for most warranty.

      Hi personally as a roofer would never use it unless it had to be used like in valleys. Other than that I might use it on my starter row that would be it. Because of the high when we have here in North Carolina. So I like synthetic felt personally and I think it works great but you are right you can put peel and seal up there and it will last for six months but as soon as you put shingles on it guaranteed with that one by six you’re going to hit the joint with a nail and it’s going to shoot a hole in your shingle and your roof willl Lake.

      @@Drewsroofingandhomerepair There is a mechanically fastened underlayment that rolls down very quickly that you can use under the peal and stick if you are very concerned about shingle removal. In New England, the weather seal is required in many areas and saves a lot of damage from ice dams and other problems every year. Also, with a high quality shingle and a second layer of shingles after 30 years without removing the first layer, you can potentially get 60 years without having to worry about removing the roofing. You will be dead by then. Haha

    • @AAaa-gs9nv

      yes its called ice & water, some people put metal shielding above the underlayment or that n no underlayment which thats wrong ,sweat moister will cause damage n mole

    Most defenetly that deck needed sheeting. I only use water & ice shealed in a frost zone. Then only use a half roll. I know that peal and stick is a bugger to deal with.

      @Drewsroofingandhomerepair  2 роки тому +2

      I hate I shield and yes it should be illegal it makes it almost impossible to tear off a roof it’s horrible. And you might just end up replacing the plywood because of it. The shingles are stuck to the ice and water the ice and water stuck to the plywood good luck with that

      @@Drewsroofingandhomerepair Wow! You'd rather make money repairing all the soggy sheetrock from ice dams every year. Also, with continual leakage the rafter ends and sheathing will rot eventually then you can charge the homeowner for that. Use mechanically fastened for first layer. It's very easy and you can ask the homeowner if they want to pay a little more now or worry about removal in 20 to 30 years. Have a nice day

    • @Drewsroofingandhomerepair

      I live in a mid-priced subdivision outside of New Orleans with brick homes built in 1959. ALL have 1x6 decks including my house. Decided to have roofer remove ALL of the black felt from previous old roofs over the past 60 years so that I could inspect deck and lay new synthetic underlayment. The old wood deck looked new BUT when scrapping off the last bottom layer of felt, my attic was covered with a coat of dust grit and small debris that fell through the gaps between each 1x6. I have a ton of boxes and stuff stored in my floored attic and will have to vacuum it all out. Might take as long as it did to put on the roof!

    • @Drewsroofingandhomerepair
      @Drewsroofingandhomerepair  Рік тому +1

      I would recommend if you took off all the felt paper and it has one by six decking that you install OSB plywood over the top before you put shingles back on. I know exactly what you’re talking about when you’re talking about the dust in your attic I generally put plastic in the attic before I remove the roofing if it has one by six boards like yours

    I’ve been getting quotes from several roofers here in central Florida. They all want to use peel and stick over the entire roof. When I say I want 2 layers of something else (felt vs some thick synthetic) which is also Florida code, they tell me no one does it. When I bring up the problems of future reroofs, they ALL say it’s no problem. I can see the BS in their eyes. They aren’t very good liars. Wish I could find an honest roofer. I’m sure they all hate me.

      @pacmanfl here in south western Ontario, Canada most roofers put ice and water shield on the first 3 ft at the eaves and in the valleys. And I don't see the point in putting it on anywhere other than in the valleys. I only put ice and water shield in the valleys.

    Total unequivocal horse shit .....they're removing perfect roofing substrate and roofing membrane... there is nothing wrong with what they're removing...the boards are pristine....peel and stick is self sealing membrane and will not leak if punctured by nails or screws.....sky lights are the only issues which I am unaware off....but the rest of the roofing is safe from water penetration....a difference of a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars....
