  • It's the busiest time of the year on the farm as I'm trying to get the new shed ready for calves, source and collect the calves, and then get them settled in. I weighed the yearling and store cattle too and while the yearlings did well over winter, the stores are a different story so it's a case of more lessons learned.

If you get sheep wire and put it at the back the length and put loose straw on top to act as a canopy to keep the wind off the calves when the are lying down in the straw, the end wall to the gates.

Get a wind breaker to hang down all across the front of the shed on top of the feed barrier maybe

Best of luck with the new calves. I look forward to watching the videos of their arrival. A calves worst enemy is a North/East wind at this time of the year. If the wind comes from that direction and the fact that your shed roof is high it will catch the wind, draw it under the roof and down the back wall where your straw bedded area is. You could put planks of timber 3' or 4' high between the gates of each pen, cover them with those square bales of straw that you have on the wall and make a cocoon for the calves thereby blocking the draughts. I recommend that you give the new arrivals a intranasal vaccine of something like Rispoval RS+PI3 or Bovilis RSP as soon as they arrive on your farm.

If you get pallets and fill the gaps with boards from other pallets you will have a very effective windbreak.
They can be webbed together and strutted to be moved via front end loader or two people

Bales are great to use as a wind block long as you can keep them dry

Good video Kieran 👍 I would be inclined to put a few big bales at that open end to cut out draughts ?

Great video as always. How many cows would you consider milking long-term? There is probably something in tams for upgrading milking facilities.

Good video Kieran.I wouldn’t be beating yourself up over the weights of them stores a kilo or two isn’t much good to them just they would only be holding there own.if you wanted to see a difference in them they would want a good few kgs of ration and beet.but then they would be too good for the man who has to hold them for 70 days for QA .can’t win noting wrong with the weights and price you got the last day in the mart.hope the calves go well for you .your an honest man take it or leave it type .

Put jackets on calves it keep them nice and snug and they will use less feed to keep warm

      And don't let eat hay.
Just makes a ball in their stomachs pellets or your ration and good straw or second cut silage the straw is best it irritates their rumen and helps them use their use their feed more efficiently for weight gain their is science behind
Just maybe try 1 pen hay ad lib
1straw ad lib longer stronger calves on straw
      Pot bellies with hay

Well spotted! It was a bad bale. I leave any like that in front of them for a few hours to pick the best of it, then take it away and give them another

@@sullivansfarm Did you have any of the bales tested for dmd/protein etc to see how good it actually was for feed value? could be your answer to poor weight gain
