John Candy started doing movies in the mid-70s, but it was his time on the Canadian sketch comedy show SCTV that made him a household name. SCTV had several comedic talents who went on to become big names in the 80s, including Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short.

The breaking the dinner plate bit at 5:34 always cracks me the hell up because he escapes breakage when it falls and then assumes it's unbreakable and breaks it! One thing that gets overlooked is the excellent soundtrack to this movie (something that pretty much all John Hughes movies have). The scene with Buck and the little kid at 17:52 was improvised. That is, the kid was just told to wait there while John Candy did his lines. The reactions from the kid are genuine when he goes off on Mrs Horgarth. We definitely lost one of the greats when John Candy passed away. This and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" are two of his best, in my opinion.

It was John Candy's improv stories that force you to use your imagination were some of his best bits. It's like standup comedy with setup and punch line. It's a method that doesn't get used in film or TV anymore. For example, instead of showing us the dog drinking blue toilet water and the odd discoloration on tge lawn, Candy's brilliant delivery is very effective. Or saying he has a friend in a crime lab that can analyze toothbrushes is another way to get you to use your imagination.

So the song with the Bass ... In the scene in the woods that you like is called 'Sport' by Lightning Rod ... Its on an album called The Hustlers Convention... The song Sport features the one and only Kool & The Gang... Thats why its so groovy with the bass and such .. the original song is not really too long but heres a link to a longer version.. (over night edit)
    ENJOY. 😎

John Candy and Tom Hanks in Splash is an unexpected duo, throw Eugene Levy into the mix and its a great comedic trio! I think there's also one other movie that John Candy and Tom Hanks did before they did splash called "Volunteers", I think.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. Surprised you never saw this Jen. John Candy is a national treasure for America as well as Canada.
The clown scene is one of my favorites, but then so is the meeting with the principal. This movie has so many great scenes.

The final scene always gets me, he was as wonderful of a human being as you would think he was. Having it freeze on him as he's waving goodbye just rips my heart apart every single time I see it. It freezes on him and knowing that he's gone still breaks my heart.
His best movie was only the lonely with Ally sheedy from breakfast club and Maureen O'Hara from the quiet man and McClintock.
When he found out she had a tiny trailer, he swapped trailers with her. He said she was the star, not him.
It's a wonderful little rom-com and I think you would love it. He was also great and planes, trains and automobiles with Steve Martin.

My favourite John Candy film. We lost him far too soon. I remember going into our local newsagent and picking up a newspaper, and the headline was that he had passed away. It really shocked and saddened me. Everyone needs an Uncle Buck in their life. RIP John Candy.

John Candy’s claim to fame started with Canada’s Second City Television (SCTV). He had a skit called Cooking with Johnny LaRue, which you can find on YT. While he did host SNL, I don’t think he was a regular.
John Candy and Tom Hanks worked on two films together: Splash (1984) and Volunteers (1985 ). Speilberg cast him in 1941 (1979) where he worked with John Belushi. He was a favorite of John Hughes and starred in Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) with Steve Martin, and The Great Outdoors (1988) with Dan Akroyd. Other films worth seeing are Stripes (1981), which also starred Bill Murray and fellow SCTV alum, Harold Ramis, Disney’s Cool Runnings (1993), and Canadian Bacon (1995).
John Candy was one of those rare gifts of comedy.

My favorite acting scene with John Candy of all is when the two kids and he are in the car about to go to the track. The emotion he shows on his face deciding to go after Tia is really powerful without saying a word.

1:30 I'm sure it's been answered, but John Candy first rose to notoriety on SCTV, the (tragically short-lived) Canadian equivalent to SNL (and well before your time, Young Padawan).
    4:36 JINX! Owe me a Coke.😉
6:50 While I can do without the Home Alone movies, Maculay Culkin is a great actor, and this movie really shows his early skills. 🤣
17:22 That's "Wild Thing" by Tone Lōc, an absolute 80's Classic. "Funky Cold Medina" was his other big hit. And I walked around with this on my Walkman many times back in the day.

The persona that John Candy showed in his movies and in the long running SCTV was actually himself, though exaggerated. I met him a few times during different shows and he really was just a super nice guy. He always had time to stop and say hi.
The Canadian TV show SCTV began in the mid-1970s and John was a member of the cast from the beginning. His characters were always memorable and lots of fun. From Johnny LaRue to Mayor Tommy Shanks to the salesman with the snake tattoo on his face and so many more.
    Miss you, John.

Mike Myers said mole bit came from him having a mole on his own face. Saw a clip. I think he said when he first got famous from SNL he had it removed & when 2 girls recognized him in public one said it wasn't him. He didint have the mole. He thought it was funny.
