- Mario Kart DS is truly the ideal speedrunning game. Fast-paced movement, a high skill ceiling, and a built-in time trial mode really give players the incentive to keep getting better. However, like with any game, there seems to be a couple of speedrun categories that are a bit... goofy. In this video, we'll be playing a category called "crash %", trying to get the game to crash as quickly as possible. How close to the world record can we get in just two hours of playing? Let's see.

Just checked , some guy tied you today.
The amount of ties really shows how each player has an optimised gamestyle or how the game is coded because everyone finishing on the same frame would be rare in any other game.
It's because you can only finish on a frame, so instead of having a thousand times you can finish in a second, you only get 60
It's kind of interesting to me since, from what I recall, MK64 adjusts your time based on how much of your car is past the finish line on the frame you cross it, allowing for any time to be possible. I'm surprised that wasn't implemented in this game.
@@fahkyew7776I actually don't know if it's implemented in MKDS. But this run ends by crashing, so there's no finish line to cross to adjust based on how much your kart is past the line.
@@fahkyew7776 i don't know if it is implemented, but the timer is based off the ingame timer which crashes, i think. which means the game probably can't calculate for time then anyway
@@skyeplaysgames4598 probably , but it's very difficult for different cart/character combos and different inputs to lead to the exact same time (in frames). Also any time is possible but only if you finish without crashing
and i thought making the mkwii cpus respawn was a weird speedrun category

This category seems fun and easy to grind, but its probably super annoying to restart your DS every time you finish an attempt...
I definitely think it would be worse on a 3DS or DSi where you need to wait for the game to load every time

Is it crashing on the stairs because the fake gravity calculation for slopes is trying to divide by 0 when you're standing still?
From what I've heard, the game is trying to load a sound effect that isn't actually there, and it causes the game to freeze.

Went to the leaderboard, and at least two were "inspired" by the video to completely shit on bean's accomplishment and put him down to 3rd place. There is even a .210 now.

Check your PSU, those types of hard crashes often result from faulty PSU's
this crash occurs due to there not being a sound cue and a missing file in the staircase kcl.
fun fact: this doesn’t work on wii u virtual console or emulator. this only works on original ds or 3ds hardware. tested it out on my 3ds, dsi and ds lite

According to an old bug report for melonDS, the crash won't happen on 3DS if you use something like nds-bootstrap to play the game.

I’ve actually discovered ways to crash Super Mario Kart reliably by just playing completely normally (works on every version, physical and digital) and have been trying to convince the speedrunning community that crash% should be a thing for SMK. Maybe this will be the video that convinces them! :D
I’ve technically been the only one to do this so I guess I’m the World Record holder for SMK crash% at ~1 hour

Dude, I played hundreds and hundreds of hours of this game as a kid, it's probably the game I played the most, and I'm just now finding out what that items stat means?!?! I somehow never realized that it determines how many items you get. That's crazy. Awesome video btw

its definitely interesting how the leaderboard is grouped around a few different millisecond values. It'd make sense to be stuck on frame boundaries, but theres been both 333 and 331. Does it target 40fps, but not consistently?
I'm not entirely sure how it works, it's interesting to think about though.

I am a christian myself and I really wanna know.
I've been playing games for most of my life and I don't think they are bad if they are not making you do bad.
So I really wanna know and every time I start playing them I can't stop,and I feel like I can't play for just 2-3 hours a day, but i feel like playing the whole day is enough.
So I just don't know whether I can or not.

The way I see it, there's nothing in scripture that implies that all video games themselves are bad. However, if a game causes you to sin in some way or becomes an idol in your life, it definitely CAN be sinful. That said, I'm no Pastor, so pray on it and read the Bible. You'll find clarity there!
