About Eggman's design not working in the movies, Jim Carrey actually wanted them to make him look more like the traditional design. I understand why they went against that, but I gotta respect Jim Carrey for wanting to be more faithful to the games.

I’d probably say that Sonic 2 is the better movie, but Mario is the better adaptation. Definitely hope both take notes from one another, have Sonic use more of the source material, references and music, and have Mario pace itself better, and not be as alienating to newcomers
As a die hard Mario fan, I wholeheartedly agree. I mean... I'm biased, so my favorite of the two is Mario simply because it's Mario and something I've wanted for years. But the pacing and characters really need a little more room to breath. If they had done that, I think Mario might've dominated Sonic in every conceivable way. At least in terms of film. LOL
And as for Sonic, they NEED to go balls to the walls and truly adapt the source material into film. Give us a real adaptation of the Sonic Adventure games. Heck, even recently the Knuckles Show plot was revealed and it's complete wasted potential to cover ground from the Sonic Adventure games the movie won't be able to cover.

@@NoahPopejoy Yeah I definitely think the Knuckles show could’ve had a more interesting premise. Heck, I would’ve taken it instead taking place before Sonic 1 or 2, where Knuckles is purely on his own, and we see what he was up to before his debut, maybe seeing other characters like Rouge or the Chaotix, who aren’t out of the realm of possibility, sure, but it’s definitely pretty lacklustre from at least the premise alone.
@@choosbehguy Yeah. Don't be afraid of your source material, embrace it like what Mario does! And as for Mario, don't be afraid to give these characters more emotional depth like what Sonic does. I'd have loved for the plot to be about Knuckles before he met Robotnik and Sonic.

As both a diehard Sonic and Mario fan yet slightly more diehard Sonic fan here are my thoughts. I think Sonic 2 has better writing and pacing. I think as a movie it’s better. But as a fan the Mario movie was catered to me and I think I enjoy it more. It helps that my theater experience was amazing.
Unlike most movies it didn’t release the night before, it straight up released at midnight and me and my dad went to the midnight showing. The theater was packed but because it was so late, everyone there were Mario fans. People were wearing costumes, cheering, laughing, and when the movie ended the entire theater applauded. I was next to this one guy (probably in his thirties) And when they announced the movie was about to start I said in my Mario voice “Here we go”. I was thinking to myself “why did I do that” but the guy just told me it was a good impression genuinely. He was a die hard Mario fan just like me. Throughout the movie we were pointing out all the references together. We excitedly pointed out Mario using the drift to boost and even said “So long K Bowser at the same time”. You probably know the moment I’m talking about. So many obscure references that we spotted before each other too . I spotted Rambo the rhino and he spotted Chunky Kong. It’s just crazy. Me (a 17 year old kid) and some guy in his thirties who didn’t know each other had an awesome time together because we were both diehard Mario fans and this is something I’ll remember forever. I adored this movie and I adored my theater experience.

I respectfully disagree with your thoughts on Bowser. He was goofy at times, but he’s not as overly goofy as you make him out to be and you’re not seriously telling me that you didn’t find Bowser even the slightest bit intimidating during his interrogation with Luigi, the climax in Brooklyn. It’s especially weird how you dock off points for Bowser for him being goofy, but then you praise Robotnik for being goofy if not MORE goofy (seriously Robotnik freaking FLOSSES he’s definitely the bigger goofball villain of the two). Also, you forgot to mention Bowser torturing and nearly killing Toad in front of Peach just so she can do what he wants, casually trying to sacrifice all of his prisoners into a boiling pit of lava (including Lumalee who is a literal CHILD), and then attempting to NUKE the entire Mushroom Kingdom. He already did much worse in just ONE film than anything Movie Robotnik did in TWO films. I’m sorry but Movie Bowser is not only a more intimidating antagonist than Movie Robotnik but he’s also a far more effective antagonist to boot.

Not only that, but Robotnick isn't close into being serious/scary as Bowser for almost the entire movie. But then again, this is Jim Carry we're talking about. Not that he's a bad actor, I love Jim Carry, but it's hard to take him seriously whenever he plays the bad guy in a goofy manner.
Difference is although Robotnik is goofy, he’s consistent, unlike bowser who can’t decide if he’s goofy or serious

One thing I didn't like about the Mario Movie is that the Rivalry they tried to setup between Mario & DK kind of fell flat, it was shoved into the movie so quickly & resolved so quickly it left no real impact. The rivalry between Sonic & Knuckles was much more well executed as it was one of the main drives of the movies, also the fact both Knuckles & Sonic's ancestors were in conflict with each other already adds a interesting dynamic to their rivalry. Mario & DK have no such dynamic, it's just a plumber from Brooklyn & a Gorilla wearing a tie that have petty beef...
Sonic 2 is a better movie overall. But Mario is definitely a better adaptation. I would say I enjoyed Mario a little more simply because I’m a bigger Mario fan then Sonic fan.

For the Sonic movies, while I do think they could use more music I’m personally alright with them being a bit light on the source material. I’ve always thought Sonic was a very flexible character and the light source material makes it feel more like its own thing. Plus Sonic has always had a multiverse of sorts, each iteration being different than the last so personally it feels natural to me.
While I did like the Mario movie I felt it relied too heavily on the references and should’ve dialed it back a little so that it had more breathing room too develop its characters and story.
I couldn’t agree agree more, both the Sonic movies would fit in with the Sonic franchise better if the music theme from the games were used up for both movies full on.

I think music from the games could possibly get used in the Sonic 3 movie, because I did read that last year Crush 40 revealed to someone who talked to them about it, that they really want to soundtrack that movie, that they'd write some new songs for it and bring back some old ones, and that the producers at Paramount are very aware that there is an enormous demand from fans for the iconic song, " Live and learn," to play during the climax of Sonic 3. They may this time learn from their mistake of not adding music from the games into the Sonic movies. As a life-long Sonic fan, and because I love that song so much, I desperately hope that they either will hire that rock band, or that they maybe already have done that and are waiting until they can release the first official trailer of that upcoming movie to reveal it to the public.
Sonic Movie 2 Pre-quill is canon to the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
Like others have said, Sonic 2 is the better movie with good pacing, characters getting equal amounts of screen time, and a good story with real stakes.
But the Mario movie is the better adaptation since it actually adapts the games greatly.
Though IMHO, I prefer Sonic 2 for the pacing and the introduction of Knuckles and Tails.
My personal take is that as a movie, Sonic is better, but as an adaptation, Mario is better
Sonic lets you get invested into the world and characters a lot easier and overall just has a stronger plot and characters
while with Mario, things just sorta happen, and while everything is very fun and enjoyable theres not really much substance too it, but it's still EXTREMELY faithful to the games by doing that
It’s almost as if Sonic had the chance to get a sequel that was able to fully flesh out the world and characters and that the Mario movie only has a first installment so far and that we should be comparing this Mario movie to the FIRST Sonic movie or something.

Because Sonic happens from that one place which isn't Mobius or whatever to the real world and Mario happens from the real world to the mushroom kingdom

6:32 for me not explaining important (or maybe everything) is one of the worst thing an adaptation can do : assuming the viewer already know /read/watched the Source material .
It's an opportunity for the filmmakers to be lasy , not putting efforts into explaining the world the characters are living in and its rules ;
because they think you already know them (so why bother) .
And I'm not talking about neat little references in the background that you can erase from your memory 5 min after seeing them and/or can be totally removed from the movie without altering the story of the movie ;
I'm talking about things from the source material having importance for plot in order for it to move forward , but not explained because they think that you already know them (references are used as a substitute for an actual script).
so things just happen without much explanation and the casual viewer (who went in wanting to watch a movie about something he's never heard of or isn't familiar with and maybe want to get into it) is left wondering what's going on and finds it underwhelming at best and confusing at worst .
This is what happened to me with the Mario movie .
I had to look up on Google what a "blue shell" is , and why did Mario suddenly speedup after drifting on the rainbow pathway in the sky .
It's like if the writers told me :"hey! wanna know what is this thing indispensable for the plot just happened ?
Well use Google , you idiot!" .
(They did also that with every powerful ups , if you don't know the source material , you have no idea what each of them do because at any point in the movie they're explained besides the red mushroom)
If that doesn't sound bad , imagine if that happened in every disney adaptation of fairytale stories ;
imagine if crucial plot points weren't explained to the viewer in one way or another because Walt Disney screenwriters think you read the books , you know the source material .

An opinion maybe, but I agree with it though. Just because one movie made more than the other, it doesn’t mean it’s better. Remember the remake for the lion king and how it’s still considered inferior to the older one despite smashing the box office?
Anyway, how you said Sonic shown how video game movie adaptation should be done, I reckon that’s referring to live action movies. And how the Mario movie changed thoughts on it with full on C.G.I since it’s shown more leeway of references, well, the same idea was done for Sonic prime on Netflix.
Specking of the show, I reckon the second season should be on the air later this mouth or the next month in June at least.

The Mario movie was honestly dope. The 2nd sonic film is still a good movie, but IMO, Mario edges out Sonic. Hopefully Sonic 3 comes out to be peak.

It's tough because I think that both movies have things that they do better than the other. Sonic 2 I think is better at being an actual movie, sonic himself is a great and very well fleshed out character, its more accessible to non fans. meanwhile Mario is a far better adaptation, has amazing visuals and awesome soundtrack which actually incorporates game music, and is funnier imo (sorry sonic but you're not going to have me wheezing with fart jokes and robotnik flossing)
