      Brayflox at least had a tank-specific set... but I remember this all too clearly. I was originally playing through ARR as a white mage, and Brayflox was such a wall at the time that I actually went back, leveled up black mage, and swapped main jobs over to that, playing as a caster for the rest of the expansion.
      I still get nervous trying to heal anything to this day because I don't think I'm up to it after failing so much to just get my story clear of Brayflox.

    Honestly I could see them upgrading Shield Bash with a trait that turns it into Shield Swipe again after blocking.
    It becoming a OGCD with a short window to utilize before falling off after a block.
    Especially with them removing the guaranteed blocking from Shelton in favor of a general defense buff in 6.3, so Blocking is an occurrence now rather than something you can trigger manually so that would balance it out.
    Give it a potency like Riot Blade'a combo potency and make it auto-trigger the new Divine Might effect and that would be a nice ability giving PLDs more flexibility and the ability to skip to their strongest non-requistcat window GCD without doing their combo

    Brayflox without a proper tank stance on PLD could be very rough, especially if the dps spread their attention. Back in the day, it was common for tanks to mark their primary target with a 1, some even would number the entire pack.

      @@oshaapproved7612 Flash being an aggro tool is one of those FFXI carryover things like spirits within high HP damage. In FFXI, flash was a paladin(and whm!) spell that massively increased enmity. In endgame, when it was better to have ninja subjob for utsusemi blink stacks to mitigate damage, you needed to flash on cooldown since you didn't have warrior sub job for provoke.
      So I think they kept it around for as long as they did just because of that old feeling, since flash was such a big part of what Paladins did in FFXI.

    I recall using Stoneskin all the time in coils, it was a 1 free hit mitigation per cast and had no cd, was the perfect way to use my mana and save my healers mana, also tank and healer damage were not that important in ARR so mitigation was our real and only job. HW punished us with a 30 sec cooldown on what was basicly the new Stoneskin named Sheltron for Paladin. Btw I believe Mr. Happy didn't mention but "Divine Veil" couldn´t be self proc by PLD clemency, it was fixed later in HW and added line "by self or party member ", so it says unchanged in SB but you can compare and notice that its not the same by 4.0. No PLD was prepared to face the magical dmg reign, I had no idea I was taking so much dmg because of being a physical dmg tank. The fortress tank that took down Bahamut was discarded and abandoned, I would not change to a new job where I had no exp tanking, so I fell with PLD and my days in XIV were shorten until SB.

  • @UltimegaSeven
    @UltimegaSeven Рік тому +11

    Paladin has always gotten the short stick, especially in HW. Virtually every patch buffed PLD but never hit the main problems. Which always let me know how SE patches their classes. Ninja was the biggest and fastest they ever fixed a class on a scale that actually mattered. PLD could have had the ability to block magic whenever they wanted and waited an entire expansion to do it. But PLD proved one thing over all: Defensives are better than damage. Cover removed mechanics or changed the way the fight worked, but have a defensive buff over that was what really made it almost required. Doing Kefka if you remember a chinese team beat him the fastest by using sheilds mainly. Being a tanky tank gives more DPS to the team than bein a DPS tank. Ive always wanted them to go this route, being this unstoppable wall, but Stormblood proved it would destroy the game. Very interesting times.

      Damage was always king. Nobody cares about HP as long as its above 1. Cover was a problem because it was a gamebreaking gimmick that could not be balanced properly. But in general, Damage has always been the most important metric in this game.

  • @anthonydelfino6171
    @anthonydelfino6171 Рік тому +6

    Fun story about cover.... and not sure if it still works like this. If the paladin is covering someone and an attack goes out that knocks everyone back AND the paladin didn't have knockback immunity up, the paladin gets launched twice as far while the person they're covering stays put.
    We had this happen early on in Stormblood in the fight against Shinryu. If I recall correctly, bard didn't get knockback immunity back then, so our paladin covered our bard for the knockback attack, but their own arm's length didn't go off in time, so the paladin got punted so far out of the arena they broke their game for a bit.
    Also worth noting when you went over the cross-class skills, paladin didn't have the trait for protect either, so if the paladin cast it, it only reduced physical damage, and not magical. Same thing actually applied to scholar back then. Only white mage casting protect would provide the shell effect in addition to protect.

    I don't know exactly when in SB I joined but PLD was my first job and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The idea of the stance dancing really intrigued me and it kept me on my toes when playing through dungeons and trials. My friend who got me into the game was even surprised on how well I picked up on that. When I came back from hiatus, did not have any more free time, was out and I was thrown off after seeing all the changes. After a bit I was used to the changes and I'm still a PLD main but I will always miss the old days. Hopefully the upcoming changes aren't bad.

  • @bagnetic8910
    @bagnetic8910 Рік тому +3

    One aspect of PLD's stances that you overlooked a bit was that before shadowbringers, they were the only tank that required a GCD to turn either of their stances on. It also required MP. DRK required a gcd and MP to turn on, but they could turn it off for free on the ogcd. This is part of why it was tough for PLD to MT at times because it would completely change their rotation.

  • @ci6467
    @ci6467 Рік тому +1

    I have a feeling that the reason they removed shield swipe was the same reason DRK's blood price went away: "It caused MT drama". While it was never an issue in dungeons, it becomes a source of contention in raids. The strange thing is that there's an easy solution for this which is to make a dance partner like mechanic for the PLD/DRK where they have the ability to add some passive mitigation (imagine it like a block/parry that gives like a passive 5-10% damage mitigation proccing based on block/parry rate) that would still allow the shield swipe/blood price to proc and get your damage.
    It could have been a really fun and cool mechanic and with the stormblood era oGCD it would be a nice additional button press every so often in the current more static rotation.
    Also, Barricade is probably just going to be "increases block rate by 50% while reducing damage by 10% for 20 seconds" on a 90 second cooldown. lol

    just to note magic burst didn't decrease to 1000 (or 10% MP) until endwalker.
    in the past, before the trait, magic used to cost 40% of the MP or 4000 and after the trait, it reduced the cost by half to 2000 MP (or 20% MP).
    before EW your req burst used all your MP, but after you were left with 5000 MP.
    do note clemancy stayed at 2000 MP, but as of endwalker it was no longer affected by req aside from the instant cast.

    I started in April 2018 as a Gladiator in Stormblood, and played it solid until I got into Heavensward and picked up Machinist because “Buck Duane” is a gunslinger. After 15 years online, not one person has ever recognized the reference to Zane Grey’s “The Lone Star Ranger”, but a few people caught onto the joke of me glamouring my Paladin in Anemos gear at least: “Have Sword, Will Travel” instead of “Have Gun, Will Travel”, since I was “Paladin” and a cowboy. Oh boy, 4.0-5.0 era Machinist… that was a doozy I’m sure you will get to eventually… I miss being able to retaliate with my shield after a block, even though it interrupted my combo. It just felt… natural. As it is now, all your shield does is block other than Shield Bash’s stun (which I still utilize very often, especially for instance when fighting Clink and Clank outside of Livia’s boss room in the reworked Castrum dungeon when they both try to cast something, I Shield Bash one then instantly Low Blow the other, and my healer usually appreciates it) and in real life battles, shields were often employed as offensively as defensively to strike opponents, trip them up, or even stab if the shield was designed for it-though, these shields were very rare and often unwieldy from the extra weight, not “every” shield like some very misguided UA-camrs have tried to claim (thank you Shadiversity for straightening it out), so the shields in FFXIV do to me still kind of feel lacking a bit… I say give us back Shield Scrape, but I doubt they would eliminate the combo interrupt and remove Shield Bash’s combo interrupt for that “unbalancing it all”. Goring Blade is losing the DoT? …seriously, what do the devs have against DoTs at Square Enix?

    Cover on T13 stopped the Earth Shaker puddles, which helped free up a lot of room and improve DPS since the melee or casters didn't have to move. I feel like Silence was always on Spirits Within since I thought people used it to beat A1 ADS with BRD and PLD alternating. Shield Swipe Pacification was actually pretty powerful as it worked on almost everything even if they were immune to Stun so it could actually interrupt or delay mechanics, but I don't think it worked in raid. My recollection was that WAR was still undervalued until its self-healing was altered and they got more proactive rather than reactive mitigation so people often used double PLD in first coil. I also recall WAR was often the offtank because tank stances all made you do less damage and PLDs could also accidentally pull hate over time as offtank too since they only had an enmity combo. I recall PLD and MNK both using Fracture as long as they expected the fight wasn't too long to run out of TP.

Then I think mobs became immune to the blind. And someone PLS correct me if wrong, but I think you could overwrite your longer blind debuff with a shorter blind duration if you spammed flash to close together. Meaning youd hit the mob with 8 sec blind, but if u hit flash again right away youd immediately erase your 8 sec blind and get the 4 sec blind duration and so on.

    Ill say it up front that I feel like my perspective on this may be completely different from most peoples but I feel like my opinion on this is also valid.
    Im not sure of the changes so i won't doom it yet but Paladin was the one job outside of blue mage, Paladin is the only job that feels like it has some real variety like a battle mage class. I could heal, I could do long ranged magic attacks, do close ranged physical attacks, and do super important shielding moves for my party. Honest to god it kinda feels more like a FFXI Red Mage lol. And in bozja you could get back stoneskin and even raise. It felt so fun to play a variety role in a more modern setting.
    I love FFXIV for the story and graphics but gameplay to me has kinda felt somewhat worse over time. When I play especially now that everything is much more homogenized I feel like all im doing on every job is just a set button combo, and the real focus is on dodge mechanics. Like there really isnt any difference between attack, magic attack, no enfeebles, and no elemental stuff to think about. Shoot normal attacks aren't even really a thing to think about much anymore outside of the arbitrarily hardest content in the game. At times to me it just feel like a dodge simulator more than real combat. Paladin was the one job that really gave me that variety of gameplay that I looked for in FFXIV. If they nerf it or just homogenize it more i'm gonna be super bummed.
    I mean at this rate im also curious as to whether or not they are gonna start homogenizing button presses like they have in PVP so you wont even have to switch crossbars.

    I always read the Passage of Arms skill as similar to the healer “bubble skills”
    (edit: SCH Sacred Soil i guess is the only one that’s a shield as part of the bubble, WHM and AST bubbles are just pretty regens and heal buffs… not a healer at all here😅)
    When you’re in my fart cloud, you take less incoming raidwide damage, AND dots didn’t hit as hard either.

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical Рік тому

      AST bubble (Collective Unconscious) is a defense. WHM bubble (Asylum) isn't, it's just a (rather powerful) party HoT that also increases healing of people inside it. I think the HoT actually benefits from this (not 100% sure, though), which may be part of the reason it's so potent of a heal.
      WHM has no defensives other than wings (Temperance) and the single target one we got in EW (Aquaveil)

    • @gdub1693
      @gdub1693 Рік тому

      @@SubduedRadical what about Divine Benison tho? that's been around since Stormblood i thought (and the only shield i knew of WHM having for forever, cuz i usually think it says "Divine Venison" and would laugh at the thought of a healer throwing a chunk of fried deer steak at my character and it being a shield 😆)
      anywho, point of the post is "I think passage of arms also mitigates ongoing DoT damage - at the expense of the PLD not being able to do anything else while it's up" and the only other skill that reads similarly is the SCH's Soil

    • @SubduedRadical
      @SubduedRadical Рік тому

      @@gdub1693 Divine Benison isn't a damage reduction. It's like if you took the shield part of Adlo and made it an oGCD with no heal and with a 30 second CD. It's a 500 (I think) potency shield.
      That is, it's not a "reduces damage by 10/15%", it's a "shield for 500 potency worth of damage".
      WHM didn't have any damage reduction ability (at all) until Temperance in ShB, and then in EW got Aquaveil (reduces a party member damage taken by 15% for 8 seconds) on a 60 sec CD. Aquaveil is basically if you could cast Rampart (though slightly weaker) on someone else. Temperance is AOE (all party members within 30 yards) take 10% less damage (it also boosts the WHM's healing potency by 20%) for 20 sec with a 120 sec CD.
      Since I'm looking at my abilities right now: Divine Benison "Creates a barrier around self or target party member that absorbs damage equivalent to a heal of 500 potency. Duration: 15s Maximum Charges: 2" with a 30 sec CD. So yeah, it's a barrier (the only one WHM has) but not a damage reduction bubble.
      So...I guess it depends on what you mean by "bubble skills", but when you said Sacred Soil instead of Adlo/Succor, I was assuming you meant "damage reduction"?
      .
      In EW, every healer got a single party member damage reduction (except SCH, oddly, but it has a bunch of party-wide ones and its single target one, Protraction, is like a castable Thrill of Battle, I think it is; increases target's max HP by 10%, healing recovered by 10%, and gives them a heal for 10% of their max health, so SCH can use this and then Adlo to make some big fat barriers) and I think they all have 2 or more party barriers, with the exception of WHM which only has 1, Temperance.
      It's one of the reasons I feel like Plenary Indulgence should have a damage reduction (like 5% or something) added to it. But it's not like anyone listens to me. : )
      EDIT: Actually, I say that, AST may only have 1 also, but they have 2-3 party barrier things so they can shield damage that way somewhat. WHM only has the single target Benisons.

    You don’t get any offensive spells until Holy Spirit at 64 so is this divine might thing gonna be completely void until then?
    If goring blade and blade of valor are losing their dots, why do we still have the combo ender and our blade combo after confiteor, what will they do?

    I don't understand what PLD mains want. They say they hate the 2 minute burst and love the jank spreadsheet rotation, but the jank spreadsheet rotation is a direct result of the 2 minute burst. Without that 2 minute burst the rotation changes into an easy, perfectly consistent rotation that flows into itself without any need for adjustment. But they don't want that, because that's how other jobs work? But that's exactly what the job would be without the 2 minute burst?
    RIP to those guys but I hope they just design the job the way it was originally intended and give it a consistent rotation. I'm sure Square will fuck up some other job at some point so people who like garbage design can have something else to play.
