  • In this video I will show you how to replace the fan assembly on this 2017 Nissan Pathfinder. The symptom is the fan bearing will wear out and cause a loud grinding noise and vibration. This problem will apply to 2013 to 2017 Nissan Pathfinder and QX60. If you take this to a dealer to fix, the repair will cost $1100 - $1200. If you do this repair yourself, the parts is less than $200. I will show you the proper way of replacing the fan assembly. Make sure you watch the entire video for all the steps.

This video is years old as I write this, but every bit as useful as the day you posted it it. You nailed the step by step and made this something an average person with basic mechanical inclination can perform. You saved me and my family over a $1000, so cheers, thanks, and keep up the great work! This is especially useful since this is a common problem. I just pulled a bad assembly out of a 2015 with only 51K miles on it. The passenger side fan was the one with all the play in it, just like in your video.
When I did the 2015, the middle rubber grommet got pulled off the old fan assembly as I was trying to get it out through the space created for the removal/installation. I was able to reach down and grab it off of the front splash guard where it fell. I just wanted to mention to make sure you aren't missing any of them, especially if your replacement unit requires you to swap in the old grommets. Also, in the 2015 I worked on, there is a very large plastic shield around the wiring bundle that runs to the PCM/VTC box, rather than the retaining clip shown in the video. It is closed, hard plastic tube that has a rectangular shape to it. It was a tight squeeze, but I did not have to remove the shield, thankfully (I would not have known how to deal with it). If you run into this, be very careful of the wiring bundles that run to the PCM/VTC connectors. Since that wire bundle can't be moved with the shield over it, the bottom of the replacement unit has to go over these bundles where they exit the shield to connect to the box. In the 2015, these bundles only had a small amount of electrical tape around them but most of the wiring was exposed. I was very cautious to avoid abraiding/stretching/breaking any of these exposed wires when moving the fan through and out.
Most of all for people that don't regularly work on cars, be patient with yourself, go slow, and follow this procedure. It breaks the process down into manageable bits. This helps you be more calm when you see how much of your car you had to take apart/disconnect to do this repair LOL.
Great work and thanks again for sharing money-saving knowledge.

Thank you for showing us the step-by-step process on how to replace a rattling radiator fan on a Nissan Pathfinder 2017. Yesterday, my wife told me that the car is making an odd noise like a helicopter. So, I checked this morning and I found out that the fan is the one that's making this noise. I went ahead to watch a video hoping to find out the best one on UA-cam. Now, I just watched your video, and it is the most detailed video for free that I have watched on UA-cam. Thank you for your generosity for not having us pay anything to watch your detailed video. Now all I need is to purchase the new fan, adhesive foam and confidence to tackle the job. I already have the rest of the tools. Kudos to your channel and God Bless.

Looked over several videos on this and I would say hands down this is the best one. Took me about three hours from set up through clean up. 2016 Pathfinder with a slightly different module setup by the battery. I used a second strap to pull back the module and harnesses once they were loose. Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

Same, ours is just under 40000km, went to Nissan and they said $154 do diagnose (even though i already know what was wrong) and about $2000 to fix. What a joke. They baited me saying they'll send a good will request to Nissan head office... I'd rather try this sort of help on engine or CVT issues...

OK. I did this change on a 2015 Platinum Pathfinder. This is a good video for most of the way on a 2015. There are some differences near the end of uninstall. The Air Box is not screwed down but attached to the ECM frame at the back. You need to remove the ECM frame by removing a 10MM bolt at the left rear and unclipping the harness at the back of the frame. The air box is attached to this frame by a friction peg. It lifts out. There are three ECM plugs not two and the harness does not unclip from the front of the engine so it's genuinely in your way but workable. There are no ground wires on the top. There is also an extra bolt in the battery plate at the front left. There are also three clips of a harness wire on the left side of the fan assembly. I used a Continental fan FA71750 and it is in and appears to be working fine.

This video is AMAZING!!! The job took me about 4 and a half hours because I'm old and slow, but I did it and the replacement fan works great. The connections on my VTC controller were in a different configuration but not a problem to remove (2015 Nissan Pathfinder) The fan cost be about $180. Thanks for this video, I can't believe I actually did it! I'm not a car person or a mechanic in the least, but I am cheap! so after watching this video and seeing how the repair job goes it gave me confidence to try it myself. Saved nearly $1000 because of this video.

Thank you so very very much!!! This video is a perfect example of a How To video!! It does not get any better than this. I rejected two quotes of $1100 and $1150 from local mechanics, bought the entire assembly online with control module for $200 (that also had the three grommets and foam attached for), and it took me 1 hour to disassemble, and 45 minutes to reassemble. I replaced old rusted bolts too! I like that there is no preamble, no long definitions, just directions that speak to exactly what is needed.

Just got done with my 2014. Thank you so much. Tips from a novice, don’t do this tired, expect about a good 2 hours. Makes sure you have plenty of light. Pivot the fan from the center counter clockwise out. It made it easier for me. Putting everything back together is easier just remember to keep track of all the bolts. Also make sure you stretch!!! This will murder your hamstrings if your 6’ or taller. Cheers.

Thank you for the video. Step by step with such detail as to how you remove each clip and harness makes it a 5/5 star tutorial.
I will note my 2015 Canadian spec pathfinder had a couple differences, including two ground wires attached to the ECU bracket being located elsewhere, as well as a couple clips in a different place. Despite this, the video was all I needed to get the job done.
For other viewers, so note, he makes it look a lot easier than it is (mainly getting the old unit out, and the new one in.) I have done plenty of DIY automative jobs, and this still took me 1.5 hours to get the old unit out, and 2 hours to get the new one in and everything put back together best and tidy.
All in all, can’t thank you enough for the video. One day I look forward to giving back to the UA-cam community as you have.

I don't typically write reviews on youtube, but I felt compelled to comment on this one. This is a fantastically well-done video! I would describe myself as a seasoned beginner with most things mechanical. I can do the basic things (tire rotations, oil changes, etc.), but to me, this is a major repair. I followed this video for a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder. It took me about six hours following this video. Fan assembly cost $293.40 with tax. I ended up with a spare bolt and nut that I could not account for even though I rewatched the video multiple times and retraced my steps. For my vehicle, this video was almost identical. I had difficulty removing the fasteners for the bundle that ran across the top front of the engine compartment so I cut them. It worked. It took about 30 min to wrestle the thing out and about 10 min to get it back in place.
Anyhow, this guy really explains the steps well. The lighting is great. The shots are mostly clear (except those damn fasteners). Well done!

Thank you so much for posting this video. The instructions are very thorough and easy to follow. My 2015 Pathfinder just hit 50k miles and the fan noise which was intermittent a few months ago, turned in to a serious issue. I decided to purchase the fan assembly recommended and was able to get the job done. However, there is just one thing that I would like to point out. The self-adhesive weather seal tape size recommended here (1/2" T X 3/4" W) was too big and didn't let the fan sit properly in its place. I had to use a smaller tape and both bolt holes lined up perfectly.

Thank you so much. Just started having this trouble on my pathfinder and this was the first video that popped up about it. I will be using this as a step by step guide next weekend to repair mine. And thanks for doing the reverse assembly as well. More times than not it's the reassembly that's harder to do than the teardown. And most reviewers don't address it.
    Awesome work sir!

This video is great. Very helpful step by step. Took me about an hour to take apart and another hour to put back together. Only struggle is those dang clips are difficult to pop open and some really hard to reach. But video totally is a great guide and car working great. 2017 Nissan Pathfinder.

Many thanks Dude! Just finished the install. SMOOOOTH! Scared me to unplug the ECM, unbolted the bracket and rolled the connectors out of the way. We just finished a 2500m run pulling a camper, passenger fan went bonkers, pulled the plug and finished the trip on one fan. It wasn't sounding real healthy, lots of play in the bearings. 112,000
    Again, many thanks.
    Plugs are next.

Thanks! 2015 Pathfinder with same issue. Part cost $170 vs $1000 quote from mechanic, but did take me (rookie), 5 hours.. Wasted a lot of time with the left side fan screw.. Home depot run and get some flex socket that was finally able to turn it.. Either way, saved a TON! Much appreciated!

Hi, I found this video very helpful, thanks for spending the time to record and upload - absolute legend.
I have do have one additional piece of information that may help others. When I replaced my fan assembly it did not work. After some trouble shooting, I found that the new fan management unit most likely requires an address to be programmed to operate with the car computer (or unlikely but potentially my new one was faulty). Fortunately for me, my old fan management unit mounting pattern matched the new and I was able to replace the new with the old and Voila - Fan running. If anyone else has this issue, try it and it should work.
I also replaced my fan management unit mounting screws with slightly larger ones as the ones supplied weren't exactly tight and snug when screwed in.

Wow! Really one of the best, most detailed repair videos I have seen in a long time. You made this repair virtually dummy proof. Slight modifications and extra screws as I have a 2013 Pathfinder (first time fan has had this issue in 160k miles!) (I'm original owner). But rate this a 10/10. Thanks.
