To answer your questions: They're not booing but blooing, a term of an endearment given to the Bluecoats by there fans and alumni when entering the field. Also most did get emotional when hearing that Hymn of Axiom section for the first time. Plus believe it or not this show was only second place, to the Blue Devils who had set a new DCI Finals score record in 2014. Regardless, so glad to see you forming a strong emotional connection to drum corps so early on in your exposure to it, welcome to the marching arts community!

@@CourtneyCoulston Blue Devils have had the same rehearsal field at home since the mid-70s. We call it Mars because the field -- at least back in my day -- was like a lunar landscape. Also, it was surface of the sun hot during the day and arctic cold at night...windy, and petrochem smells, since there are oil storage tanks nearby (An oil company actually owns the land, BD just leases it). Rehearsal scheduling is a little different from when I marched in 1984, but I remember 12 hour days on the weekends AND every day once school let out and everyone was free to devote full-time to it (I was 20 and had a 14 year old next to me). It became a full-time unpaid job. 9am to 9pm from then until the end of the season was standard, except for travel or show days. I remember an 18 hour day in Bakersfield once (NOT a fun one, and not just because Bakersfield was the armpit of Southern California at the time).
If you can march clean there, you can march clean anywhere. Absolutely the worst field I've ever marched on. And yet it's as close to holy ground as I've ever stepped foot on...the crucible where Blue Devils are made -- our spiritual home.
I would love to walk that field again, find my opening set, and let all the memories wash over me.
If you want to be the best, you have to put in the time and effort...a season of top-level drum corps was the hardest thing I've ever done. Basic training in the military (I entered service a few months after DCI finals) was summer camp in comparison. Good instruction helps, and the instructors at this level are absolutely top notch in every area, but it also requires the members to buy into the program and bring it to life.
I will tell you, tho...being on the receiving end of the kind of crowd love you saw here -- there is NOTHING like it. I felt like an absolute GOD at the end of our finals run.

The worst part about rewatching this is never getting to watch it for the first time again. I still remember watching this my freshman year of high school and your reaction, especially in the end, is like me watching my past self. The "Oh my goodness!" and then the "... Oh?" when they did the pitch bend was priceless bc I still remember the element of surprise and awe for the first time. And when the soloist jumped off the ramp and landed on the guard right on the last hit, I basically said "I've seen enough, I'm satisfied" and decided that the bluecoats were now my fav corp. Now that I'm a freshman in college and seen dozens of more shows, Tilt is forever a favorite one. I'd recommend Crown 2013 "E=mc^2" or Bluecoats 2016 "Downside Up". Btw I was extremely disappointed when I found that they didn't win first, but got second. Although I respect the show that got first, us Bloo fans know who really won that night.

You're spot fucking on with that 2014 Crown show. 2002 Cavaliers Frameworks, and 1996 Phantom Regiment Defiant Heart are right up there too. Frameworks is maybe my favorite show of all time.

I agree with you with experiencing that show for the first time...
I graduated high school and I was blown away. I can definitely see why the Blue Devils got first....but holy cow Bluecoats has SWEPT off my feet. I was shocked with the few last notes. I enjoyed how seamless they made it....but to a musically trained ear, it sounded on and off. I can't imagine how it is on the floor with them.
But overall AMAZING. They love pushing boundaries.

  • @samsignorelli
    @samsignorelli 4 роки тому +104

Hee hee! I made a New Zealand girl breathless! (don't tell my wife!)
And NOW you have a much better idea of what a drum corps show is like....from the audience POV, with good camera and audio work.
Very glad to have brought this to your attention. Thanks SO much for being willing to look at new activities to react to.
(16:34 "That was out of this world." Actually, that was Carolina Crown's 2014 program.)
For those not familiar with drum & bugle corps...think Olympic-level marching band (as you have just seen). These groups are not attached to a school...they're independent organizations, and the top ones draw members from all around the world (the euphonium player bending backwards with his tongue hanging out during the first pitch bend near the end is from Italy, in fact). The age range tends to be 14-22, but top groups like Bluecoats tend to skew older, although there are the occasional young kids at this level.
As for being top notch....Bluecoats have been for a number of year now. This program took 2nd place. In almost any other year, this would've won (and they DID win in 2016).
You REALLY have to love hearing the crowd go bonkers before the show even ends...i can tell you as a performer, that is an incredible feeling. And the crowd at the end wasn't booing...they were Blooing!

Imagine, for a moment, what it's like to be at a concert where the music is really loud. This is way better. Not because this is louder (it is), but because the sounds that you're listening to with a drum corps are mostly acoustical, and not so much from a loudspeaker. It just hits way different, and it's really hard to get that over a UA-cam video. You actually FEEL it.

One of my favorite Drum Corps related videos is by Ben Gunnarson and is called “Bluecoats 2016 Trumpet Soloist Supercam”. It is the same group, just two years laters (and very different uniforms). It’s a GoPro video that switches between a practice rehearsal during the week leading up to finals, and their encore performance after they had won first place. It is one of the coolest perspectives I’ve ever seen, and I highly recommend watching/reacting to it at some point.

I love these performances. I marched in my high school marching band during my freshman and sophomore years (I became a varsity football player junior year, so I had to leave the band). We had a VERY large high school band...the size of some college bands...and were multiple award winners. Everyone in the school greatly appreciated the band, and even when I was on the football team, we always cut our halftime locker room speeches short so we could get to the sidelines in order to watch them perform. Having been on both the band member side AND football team side, I can attest that the band practiced just as long as hard as the football team every day during the season. I still suggest you watch the Ohio State University band performing their famous home game pre-game routine "Script Ohio". It's a tradition going all the way back to the 1930s, and it is always incredible seamless. During every performance, one of the graduating senior sousaphone (tuba) players gets the honor of "dotting the I". One of my college professors (who also became a good friend) had been a sousaphone player at Ohio State and had dotted the I back in the 1970s. It's a really cool tradition...and I'm not even an Ohio State fan!

This right here, is my favorite DCI show of all time. Thank you for reacting to it! Made me really happy. And as you probably have learned, they are not booing, as that is EXTREMELY, and I mean EXTREMELY rude to the corps, since they practice and rehearse for months on end. They are instead "Blooing" which is a tradition from alumni and fans to scream "BLOOOOOOOOOOOO" before and after the show.

Scoring is based primarily on technical execution: how well the notes are played, their blend and unison with the rest of the corps; marching is judged on levels of precision from consistency of spacing between members, evenness of shapes and straightness of lines, even positioning of instruments, torsos, and individual feet.
In drum corps parlance, a winning show is not necessarily the most captivating show, but the cleanest show. Thus, we all have favorites, like this incredible BLUEcoats show, that didn't win.
For the corps members and staff, it's all about doing your best and giving it your all so each performance is better than the last, and wowing the audience. Every corps deserves a standing ovation for the work they've done. There's only one First place, but every member can achieve their goals.
BTW, I was there for all three nights of finals, I saw this show three times...and each time the ending made me feel like I was suddenly drunk. It is the most pleasantly bewildering drum corps routine I have ever seen in decades.

You should watch Carolina Crown's E=MC2 - that was one of the first DCI shows I watched and was AMAZED not only by the difficulty of runs in the brass, but also the emotion and story of the show as well as their seamless movement! I am a trumpet player but never got the chance to march DCI before age-out (there are limits on the ages of the corp members) but always dreamed of working and playing and marching at their level. They are the athletes of the band world! Bluecoats used to house at my high school on tours and I actually got to see them perform this live - breathtaking! Hymn of Axciom, the ballad, made me cry. This is by far one of the favorite shows!

Not sure if someone has mentioned this to you yet, but here are what things are called in Marching band /DCI terms:
The people that you call "dancers" are called "Colorguard"
The people playing those mallet and auxiliary (other instruments that aren't practical to march) is called the "pit"; the people that march with the drums is called the "battery."
Then everyone one else that has an instrument that is marching is called "horns" or "winds" with the following in that category: trumpet, mellophone (it's like a trumpet with a bigger front bell), Euphonium (the marching baritone; also can be looked at as a "larger" trumpet), and tuba/sousaphone.
Everything that I left out is because of certain rules that DCI has for certain instruments; DCI has however has started to include more and more instruments that corps can use in there shows.

GIRL . . . You just saw one of the more innovative drum & bugle corps performances in the last 20 years. I remember hearing about this show, but never got a chance to see it. Your reaction was exactly what corps members are hoping for when they perform in front of a crowd. Not only is it more exciting because you're among a crowd buzzing with enthusiasm, but you can literally FEEL the sound at many points when it gets really intense. This experience beats many live sporting events as well.
Being able to feel the power and sound in your body is just not something you can prepare for. Every person I have exposed to DCI through a live show thoroughly enjoys the experience because you can't help but feel excited through the rush of it all.

There's another drum corps activity called Drum Corps Associates (DCA) which does the same thing as DCI, just that it is an "all-age" organization, meaning that people who age out after DCI (age 21) they can still march or even if youre just starting out within the drum corps community. DCA has performers from all walks of life and all ages, most of whom marched DCI and want to continue marching. I recommend the Hawthorne Caballeros, Reading Buccaneers, Atlanta CV, especially all of these corps recent shows within the last year or so. DCA just goes to show you that no matter your age, you can still put on a kick ass show!
