My dad was an electrician on the bridge. In 1975 he took me to work, I spent time in the control house then he took me up one of the towers via an open lift to the top, I stood as far back as I could because I was an open lift .We went to the top where the sheeve wheels are there is a mechanism to lower the bridge manually. Good memories.
Following the construction of the barrage upstream there is no requirement for river to be navigable for the size of boats that would require the bridge to be lifted.
For Information: I was the chairman of the Darlington Video Film Makers and had a agreement with the other film makers that we would use each others footage to gain maximum coverage. The edit is my own (from the VHS tapes) and was done independently at the time. The collaboration is credited at the end of the video.

Cool! Didn't know it lifted up. Thanks
I was the one who used to wind the pulley to raise the bridge. I was knackered by the end. It's a good job Desperate Dan was there to help me.
I'm like, those poor lights looked really worn out!
My MIL was there for the first and the last.

As below
They should of left it in woring for the future od teeside as wont ever be seen again
What I want to know is how did you resist the temptation to stick your toes under the edge of the bridge as it was coming down?
Should of bee left working order for future generations was built to move
