- The train from Waterloo divides at Bournemouth, the front portion carrying on to Weymouth. So let's jump on this train to go from one seaside town to another. But not before we have a good look at Bournemouth's wonderful station, looking particularly lovely in the bright August sunshine.

Some SWR trains divide at Bournemouth with just the front unit going onward towards Poole and the rear unit terminating, going into the carriage sidings.

Eastleigh is the south coast depot for XC, 6 or 7 Voyagers are there overnight.

In the summer I did a few trips to Bournemouth from Weymouth and back, using the open top from Weymouth to Swanage and the 50 to Bournemouth.
On the way back I'd usually get back to Swanage, get the train up to Corfe Castle and then the bus back from there.
A very nice if long journey.
And those first class seats are actually worse than the standard seats, the original first class was significantly better, not only because it was 2+1 but the seats were a lot plusher.
An option you could have gone for was the City Cruises between Swanage and Poole Quay. That makes a nice day out, we've done it a few times, got the earliest one from Poole to Swanage and then got iirc the last one back to Poole. Plenty of choice of fish & chip shops in Swanage, there must be at least 6 within around about 1/4 of a mile, with two even being literally right next door to each other.

I do the Swanage railway for free. Because I'm not a volunteer. I bought a Swanage railway pass year's ago. Plus I've got a free bus pass.

The Interchange is now Bournemouth bus station. The 1st bus bus station is where the cinemas are now in Bournemouth. It burnt down in 1976. When the railway station was being renovated, the scaffolding was up for over 10 years.

Cross country have a depot at Eastleigh which is why there’s odd journeys to Eastleigh OnLY with some going dead from Bournemouth to Eastleigh
@@NathanS2022 Yes, i knew about the Eastleigh depot so was guessing it was to get the unit back there. I suppose you can't flood the line with lots of these workings, hence some going dead.

Thank you Johnny for another excellent video, this time of your 'little trip' through Dorset. I first visited Bournemouth in 1954, on a family holiday when I was just six years old. I remember being impressed by the roof over Bournemouth station. Previously, I had thought it was only London terminuses which had the splendour of 'allover' roofs!
One suggestion. This video would have been even better if the map you showed at 5m 30s had appeared right at the beginning of the video. You could have then also briefly explained how you had got from Weymouth to Sandbanks!

I see what you mean wrt bringing the map forward. But, the video is also being watched by many people who are not (yet) avid followers of the channel. Hence, in the edit, i really do have to "get on with it!" at the start, otherwise those newer viewers are more likely to click away.
That's why i have to establish the basic storyline and also the style of the video (buses, trains, architecture) before we pause to view the map.
I know that isn't how you would prefer it (I'm a map person too so probably my preference too) but that is my reasoning.
Very happy for more people to wade in on this one as everyone's feedback has often led to changes in the way i do things!

I don't have a studio, so i record mine sat on my bed as the bedroom has the warmest sound in the house. The room where i actually edit is far too hard for doing the voiceovers!

It's route got changed a few years ago, it used to go through the area known as Penn Hill
You might have mentioned the tracks leading off to the south which give access to what was once Bournemouth West station but is now the SWT traincare depot, and the fact that the main line to Weymouth is single-tracked between Moreton and Dorchester!
@@KempSimon wrt to the first (the line to the depot) , i omitted that info to enable the flow of the video, but you are quite right about it. I also didn't really get a chance to talk about the disused viaduct that makes the complete triangle.
Wrt to the single track line, i completely missed that and really should have included it in the narration - good point 👍

@@JohnnyHooverTravels - In the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games Sailing Regatta at Weymouth the Government funded a new road into the Dorset seaside town but it wouldn't pay for the single track section between Moreton and Dorchester to be re-doubled or the inadequate electrical supply to the Third Rail boosted to allow two EMU's to operate in multiple west of Poole.

Great trip and very well researched too. Bournemouth station was very depressing when it was being renovated with scaffolding poles in the middle. The 444s are good but the 442s were better!

When I’m in Newcastle I confess to evening visits, even with no train to catch.
@@colinriley123 nowt wrong with that. One of my favourites is to sit in the "beer garden" at York Tap watching the trains roll past 🍺
Running a train that is being positioned for the morning peak up service as a passenger service helps to offset the costs, a not in service train still requires a crew.
