  • The Tees Valley Line is a true relic of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway. It not only follows some of the route of the original 1825 railway, but also marks the rapid expansion of the railway into Teesside. At Saltburn we see a planned seaside town, created by the railway and built with, among other things, railway money.
Oh, and then at Saltburn, Izzy, our four-legged friend gets a chance to run on the sands all the way back to Redcar over the wide expanse of beach that stretches along the coast.
Expect a train ride, industrial history, seaside towns and a dog running at full pelt over the sand! Oh, and there will also be ice cream and chips, if you're good.
    Departure: Bishop Auckland, England, UK
    Destination: Saltburn, England, UK
    Distance: 64 km / 40 miles
    Duration: 1 hr 23 mins
    Average speed: 46 km/h 29 mph
    Standard class return: £11.50 / €13,10
    Date of Travel: September 2024
    Operator: Northern Trains
    Motive power: Class 156 2-car DMU. Built: Metro-Cammell (1987-1989)

As a local, I can tell you Redcar gets both pronunciations from those who live here - RedCAR and RedCA.
You did get Pacittos wrong, it’s Pa-Sittos not Pa-Chittos.
    Glad you enjoyed your trip!

    Just a couple of things.
It would have been a different 156 you saw leaving Saltburn. They have a quick turn around. The Bishop Auckland train leaves just before the hour. The Darlington one arrives at about 17 minutes and leaves at 22 minutes past.
2nd thing is the sign saying 3 miles to redcar. It's further. It's 2 miles just to Marske.

Was the Mr Pease you mentioned twice, the same Mr Pease from Ashmore, Benson and Pease, that evolved into Davy Ashmore ? Also here's a tip, study the wind and get off at Redcar then walk to Saltburn if the wind is in the same direction. I used to ride my push bike from Stockton to Redcar Steelworks and back, 5 days a week for 25 years ( 34 miles per day ) in all weathers. Wind was a major feature of my commute, mostly blowing from Stockton to Redcar but not always but in the summer, on shore breezes were a feature that blew me home for about 3 miles of my journey quite often, with wind developing from the difference between the air rising above the hot land and the cooler sea air filling back in, where the hot air had risen from.

Sadly TPE are cutting services in December and stopping at Redcar central instead of Saltburn from then. The reason Redcar has a sliding barrier is first the strong winds off the sea use to bend the boom gates and cause big delays and there is not enough clearance for a proper normal barrier. So they put in a wind proof model instead.
