  • Spirulina, or dié, is an algae that originates from the shores of Lake Chad, cultivated by Kanembu women. Known for its many qualities, it is now used in treatments against malnutrition, as a food supplement and in cosmetics. Through its Lake Chad Biosphere and Heritage Project (BIOPALT), UNESCO is supporting local populations in their green economy projects concerning its production.
This documentary traces the history of spirulina, from its discovery in the Lake Chad basin to its use today and highlights the challenges of its sustainable conservation. It pays tribute to the women of Lake Chad who have offered spirulina to the world.
The video is based on a documentary by Wafik Ghommidh and the archives of Ms and Mr Brandily.
