it might help to do a copy data modifier for the clothes, I might have done that in my many attempts. Not sure. I personally don't think the heat map should need to be copied over to the clothes.

@@olivermarie8319 it pretty much the same except that its all on one small menu (data transfer)and you have to hit apply on the data transfer modifier before fixing model. just make sure you delete all vertex groups first, then data transfer, fix on cats, but make sure to grab the clothing piece and shift drop into the amature so it stays with the body then pose mode. also i dont do anything but blur in weight paint mode as it cleans it up a lot better. hope this helps

Alternatively, you can also delete the vertices under the clothes in your body since it'll never be seen, while at the same time serving the purpose of optimizing the avatar very subtly.
Unless you plan on using the inventory system to remove parts of the clothing in-game....
@@AskAmberOfficial True, but just how many articles of clothing do you intend to tie to an inventory system before considering an entirely different avatar?
@Razor that's really unoptimized. could just separate the body and make it so that when the clothes toggle off the body toggles on.

This works amazing! BUT after clicking 'FIX MODEL' it changes the material I have on the hair and puts it on the clothes >< any idea why?
so when I'm merging armatures mainly clothes do i click merge all bones or no when im merging them?

hi! i am able to follow all the steps up until you go into weight painting and you select the bones individually while having the draw tool selected. 2:14 how do you select them while in weight paint mode and get them to show up as they are as if you were in pose mode? i am using version 2.83 of blender with CATS. thank you, amber!
select the mesh, then shift select the bone, then go into weight paint mode. Then ctrl+click the bone to select it. Then if you want to edit while in that pose, go to the mode dropdown in the top left and go to object mode. To get back to tpose or apose, use cats to start pose mode again. Hope that helps!
when I go into the weight painting mode, the pose mode stops? how do I fix that?

How do you select the bones when weight painting? Whenever I try to weight paint, I can't ever specify what bone I want to paint.

Wow - you are making extra work for yourself. Select the Armature, Shift select the mesh and go into Weight Paint Mode. The Armature gets Pose mode added automagically because it is also selected. Ctrl-Click Bones to select, Pose & Weight Paint its Weight Group. Alt-R clears the Bone adjustment - so you can temporarily move things (like limbs) out the way, or open the mouth WITHOUT having to go back to Object Mode, Select Bone, Pose Mode, Adjust & etc to go back again....

The auto weight painting works pretty well but every time I try to smooth it the mesh splits. Have you ever dealt with this?
go into edit mode for the garment, press "A" for select all, press 1 for point select, then "M" for merge and select "by distance". That should merge all the doubles and it shouldn't split any more. (it will show how many verts removed by the merge in the bottom bar in blender)

when i try to add the modifier with the generate data layers button, nothing happens. The apply button doesnt pop up, am I doing something wrong? There are no other vertex groups.

This is the equivalent of that one Indian guy on the internet who teaches geometry, but VRChat.
The apply button wasn't there and this didn't work for me. any reason why?
In the newer blender, you have to use the drop down arrow to find the apply button.

Can i ask something, why when i try to make the vertex group using data transfer for the pants it appears the pants have even more clipping than the previous, i follow all your step even delete the original ameture from the pants. Is there any suggestion for me to fix it?

If you have an armature modifier you need to remove that first and then fix the model twice. If you're still having trouble, you may need to manually go in and either sculpt the pants to be slightly larger or just go and manually edit the weight paint. Also make sure you have the right area selected as your data transfer object. If that doesn't work I'm sorry I don't can't help more than that.

Will this work with a character I used AutoRig Pro to rig? The weight painting is so tedious.
If you have a fully weight painted model that is similar to the one you have that isn't rigged, you can pretty easily weight the whole model to the other one using this technique and then refine it from there. But the armature needs to be one that works with VRChat.
@@AskAmberOfficial Hey thanks. The armature is automatically generated from another plug-in. I just tried it and they didn't work well together on my first attempt. I'm new to the whole VRChat thing.
@@nu-beings My suggestion is to find another model that is similar in shape to yours, and has the vrchat armature already and weight paint the entire unrigged model to the model with the correct armature. If you don't have a similar body type of an existing model, then I suggest a site such as Mixamo by adobe to rig a model from scratch in minutes. Then import to Blender and fix using Cats plugin and refine the weight paint from there because it definitely won't be perfect but it's a good start. It's much easier than weighting the whole model from scratch which I can personally tell you is quite frustrating and time consuming.

tryed data transfer i got all the vertex group but no apply message on it and when i go to fix model thay are all gone any ideas?
What version of Blender are you using? The version in this video is Blender 8.3 so if you're using version 9 I think it's different in how you apply modifiers. I'm not quite familiar with Blender 9 yet, but I will be soon.

You have to use the FBX and import it into Blender, my Blender beginner video covers this in depth.
why i cant select the body?
This is probably a very dumb question, but whenever I follow this and get to the part where I hit "Fix Model" just after the data transfer modifier, Cats joins all my meshes and I can no longer see my clothing object in the hierarchy under armature. I also can't interact with it has a separate object. I'm very, very new to this so sorry if none of what I'm saying is making any sense. I just have no idea where I'm going wrong. :(
I think Amber is using an older version of CATS in the video. I have this issue too with the newest version of CATS which joins all my meshes when I click "Fix Model". You can separate your accessories from the main Body mesh by going to Edit mode, select the geometry for the accessory, and go to Mesh > Separate > By Selection from the top toolbar of the viewport. Repeat this for each accessory. You'll have to rename all of your accessories back to what they were before fixing your model again though, so it's not perfect.
Actually, just after I wrote this, I found out there's a way you can avoid this problem altogether. XD
To the right of the "Fix Model" button in CATS there should be a wrench button. Click that and uncheck "Join Meshes". Now "Fix Model" shouldn't join all your meshes together.

How do I get rid of the weird deforms
If you have strange things happening, you can manually go in and add/subtract/smooth where needed :)

Been having problems with this method in Blender 2.93. The weight painting was very incorrectly placed and would break almost everything in pose mode.
The way I managed to get it to work: (Expand Comment)
1. After importing your clothing/object, sculpt to your need before parenting
2. Once fitting correctly and you are ready to weight, select your object then shift select your armature. Ctrl+P, Armature Deform/With Automatic Weights. This should parent your object with your armature and give simple weighting
3. Delete all vertex groups and Armature modifier
4. Add Data Transfer modifier, select your base model as the source
5. Check Vertex Data and open the window, click Vertex Groups
6. Open the Vertex Groups window and make sure Layer Selection is 'All Layers' and Layer Mapping is 'By Name'
7. Generate Data Layer, Apply, Fix Model twice

hey sorry this is of topic but you seem to know about this . In unity when you are editing there is the favourites and it says models it doesn't say that for me so i cant see the avatar im editing. Do you know how i could fix it. Great Video btw
I'm sorry, I'm not totally sure what you're asking, I don't really use the favorites area much, I just use my assets folder for my current project :)

wont let me selec bones like you did when weight painting, im using blender 2.9
All I know is that 2.9 has MANY bugs and problems and I don't use it, only 2.8. But aside from that, did you select the armature, then shift select the mesh, then choose weight painting, then ctrl+click the bone you want to edit? Also the mesh MUST be part of the armature, it cannot be outside of the armature. Make sure your model is fixed and hopefully this helps you out :)

Did u join the meshes, make sure that the original mesh that joined is the one that pops up in tab and not the name of another mesh

I thought this was for general model weight painting not clothing.
I don't have the CATs Plugin... is there another way?
The plugin is free and is the only way to make avatars in blender that will work in VRChat. My Blender basics video goes over this in detail :)

You need to click the armature first then shift+click the area to weight paint second. Then go into weight paint mode and you're golden. Also ctrl+click the skinny end of the bone when selecting it. Hope that helps!

I’ve been trying to get a jacket to fit my avatar for a while but every time I test it in VRC his body & shirt clip right through it around the chest. Could this be an issue solved using weight painting? I used the data transfer modifier to join it to the body as you did.
