  • Globalisation can be a technical term describing the fact of the interrelated modern world. Or it can be an ideological term used to describe a political agenda of elites and globalist institutions who want to see the decline of the nation state and more centralised international bureaucracy. Douglas Murray wonders if the COVID-19 pandemic will cause a kick back against this agenda.

YOUR OWN countrys corporations closed down factories & threw everybody out of their jobs...
They then sent their buyers to China (& elsewhere) & said "we want X million widgets at Y unit cost, reduce the quality until you can produce that" ... 🤫
The chinese manufacturers, who ARE capable of producing quality, simply followed their customers bidding... no skin off their nose !
THIS is how all the famous american brands ended up being Made in China & being trash.
The US Corporations saved on wages / pensions / building costs / insurance / local taxes / environmental regulation costs... and more. BUT they made huge profits ... why ? ... because americans continued to buy from them.

I question your statement that China has emerged as 'a friend of Italy.' China does nothing out of friendship, only strategic advantage. Certainly the most powerful and affluent northern EU nations have let down Italy, Spain and of course Greece; but China will offer Italy all sorts of economic help only as a means of gaining more influence into the affairs of Western Europe.

First, note how adroitly John Anderson guides this dialogue, allowing Murray to have the floor about 80% of the time, unlike many other UA-cam videos in which the host speaks more than the guest. I admire Murray's insights on all things political, especially his deconstruction of the methods of the extreme left in his two most recent books. He single-handedly defused the rhetoric of political correctness and exposed the faulty premises hidden in identity politics. For this, all rational minds owe him a debt of gratitude.
On the issue of globalization, I agree with Murray regarding the relationships between governments of divergent ideologies. As a result of the C-19 pandemic, it is likely the US will pull back strategic manufacturing from a host of foreign nations, especially China, since China makes so many things for American markets. That is the price China will pay for not policing its "wet market." America will pay in higher prices for goods made in the US. But this is not the end of globalization. It simply means globalization must proceed on the basis of mutual understanding and reciprocitty. The future of the world depends on building commerical and personal bridges between nations of all ideologies. China will learn from this and become an even better world partner. The people of China will demand it.
Therefore, I cautiously take exception to Murray's dim view of globalization. In fact, we cannot put the genie back in the bottle. We live in an interconnected world. But the hope is not in nation states, but in the inter-connectedness of individuals that I place my faith for the future. In the midst of the C-19 epidemic, American and Chinese medical scientists exchanged useful information like colleagues everywhere. The very technology we are using here has allowed me to connect with intelligent and creative business men and artists in the UK and Europe. Even inside China and Russia, individuals are getting things done for the benefit of people in other nations they will never meet. Yes, in an emergency, we will always look first to the nearest governmental institution. That is logical and efficient. But in weaving the fabric of a global society, individuals are making governments almost superfluous, so that one portion of the world can respond helpfully to disallocations and frictions elsewhere in the world and thereby minimize the differences which divide nations, gradually defusing the tensions that lead to global conflict. I have great faith that individuals will find a way to bridge the differences between political regimes in the years ahead. Ultimately, the future of the world lies in global cooperation to the make the future better for all.

I am ‘English’, and ‘British’, and ‘Portuguese’ etc. And I identify with my species too, obviously. Always liked Ali’s poem ‘me, we’. But, we to me is European. Without a doubt.

It was telling that the individual nation states closed their borders and not the EU. In fact, on a contiguous continent, if you believe that isolation is the best policy, closing national borders isn't necessarily the best option - someone from Southern France can't go to a mile away to Northern Germany, but they can go hundreds of miles away to Northern France. They closed them because, even if they don't want to admit it, it was a power they still had and they still see themselves as individual nations. Meanwhile, the EU stood around doing nothing.

Where does this guy get off basically calling Italy a failed state. Why don't you look in your own backyard? What about Scotland? Eh? If you were so great how come Scotland wants to leave. We don't need you or anybody else. Italy was here two thousand years ago and will still be here two thousand years later.

Douglas is like someone who has been plucked from the Victorian times and plonked in to the modern age. All his missing is the monocle and top hat. Very tiring for such a young man

Exactly, Douglas. As someone said : the nation state is the largest viable form of the family. That's not to say, of course, that other nations and cultures aren't valued neighbors, that we befriend and cooperate with.

What a ridiculous argument. Obviously the borders of European countries were closed at a national level, because the EU only has one border and that's round the outside of the whole of Europe and just closing that would not adequately address the problem of movement of people to a sufficient degree. Individual regions and cities have locked down their borders in other parts of the world, but that doesn't mean they will suddenly expect their own independence!!

I want to here more from the ideological Globalisation part to the two ideas , it was cut short in the interview. As it was for sure a nod that there is a more mercenary approach , ideological in some parts yes. And you will find that in exploitation for 3rd world countries to anyone from the super elite class who are above all laws. Globalisation has benefited china and the position is now ideological as much as economic and political. If the people behind the CCP was good in any form they would expose the west for its ideological pursuits but they won't as they are a direct competitor who has already got a surveillance state and murder innocent people and has slave camps. Both sides looking at the lesser of to evils.
