- The Tata Tiago, small family hatchback gets an AMT transmission on its CNG version. This makes it economical, but does the CNG affect your driving experience? Should there be more CNG automatics? Or even premium variants with CNG options? Kartikeya Singhee and Shumi are discussing the Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG AMTs on MotorInc First.
~
MotorInc First is a discussion between experts Kartikeya Singhee and Shumi (Shubhabrata Marmar), co-founders of MotorInc on new vehicles. Each episode will discuss one vehicle in great detail, covering the experience of driving or riding it, as well as what it means for the industry.

The name Tiago is of Portuguese origin and means "Saint James." It is a variant of the more formal-sounding Santiago, which also means "May God protect."
Ohhh! That’s one of the best explanations yet!
May god protect the one who drives this tiny hatch😂😂😂
God does protect it that's why it's the Lord Tiago😉
Or it's just named after Messi's son!
It's a 4 star in GNcap so Good to go
I love how shumi just scolded the guy responsible for removing load sensors. 😂
Shumi is our voice. What a guy! 😊
❤️
Name and Shame required.
What an awesome terminology
CNG - Eco mode
Petrol- sports mode.
It works just that way!
I was about to write this comment @raaga1994
Shumi is a man of killing words, for me it is all worth it when he scolds over some stupid decisions made irrespective of genre be it Bikes/Cars. I just wish he reaches a point in life where he influences the decision making for our automobile industry, world will be at peace.
Us lakshaya bhai us
They are listening! We are hoping to see more changes soon.
Really... Bhai... Really....
Can you review citroen c3 aircross automatic before they leave india? 😂
Ah hell naahhhh💀that’s some dark
Wise words bro
That’s gotten intense real fast. 🙃
they left India, please stop using the Internet Explorer ! 😅
Savage...! And meean..I feel sad and I giggle at the same time when I see Citroen executives giving interviews.😂
It was named Zika but then Zika virus came along and they had to change the name to Tiago ( Messi's son) That time Messi was Brand Ambassador
Woah! Urban legend or for real!
@@motorinc cross my heart. 😎
Also, fun fact!
It was ZiCa cause they wanted it to be the ZippyCar for the city!
And I don’t think it had anything to do with Messi’s, though that’s a cool coincidence.
They held a contest online for an alternative name after the zika virus outbreak and short listed three names and tiago got the most votes!
True, there was full page ad back in the day with messi.
This would be good for older people especially those like my parents for whom performance isn't the first priority, just convenience of AMT and economy of CNG in the daily commute.
Absolutely. Just that they should have that kind of usage to make the additional investment worthwhile.
@@motorinccorrectly said people think it will give good mileage and consider stuffs but don’t see the inital extra cost and if there will be a profit in the long run if there is only city driving involved is the extra costs worth it?
I have taken tiago cng to goa and murudeshwar from pune and then back to pune.i have clocked 150km/hr on cng.4 adults were travelling in the car and suspension is top notch.
How did you manage the luggage?
Drive safe! Wish you many safe and awesome journeys with your Tiago!
@@shalinpilot it is quite a task to manage luggage.i kept it between the rear seat and cng tank.both were soft bags
Great to see TATA again leading from the front.
Convenience of an AMT with the efficiency of CNG is pretty tempting. Even they thought about the space saver tyre, which they could have easily not given stating that cylinders have occupied the space, good going TATA.
If before stopping the car I switch to petrol and keep, next time when i start the car will it start in petrol or CNG.
It’s starts in CNG. Thanks for sharing your take!
And, hello again RR!
We live in a time where everybody is rushing to bring out their "first impression" video on UA-cam & some of them haven't even riden/driven the vehicle & yet they say "first impression". You guys define the word "first impression", where one needs to take their time to ride/drive the vehicle, understand the vehicle & then draw conclusions. You guys have simply raised the bar for Indian automotive journalism content as a whole & you guys are at the forefront on the wave that brings the change in how automotive journalism has to be presented, hat's off to the entire team & special thanks to both Shumi & Karthikeya for making automotive journalism interesting with their experience & the way they present. Love you guys from the bottom of my heart!❤❤
Hullo again Arun! Man! Thanks so much from all of us here at MotorInc! Means so much to read your feedback!
Karthik missed saying that TATA were the first to bring a CNG option with Turbo petrol engine (NEXON CNG Showcased at Bharat mobility expo)
Hullo! Has it been launched? Didn’t know that.
Wow! I’m shocked at how long it’s been since the Tiago came out. The car came out when I was a toddler and it’s still relatively unchanged as I’m about to finish school. Whether you like the car or not, you cannot deny its legacy and importance for Tata. Splendid review as always!
Woah! Thanks for making these guys feel super old. 🤣
Also - thanks for being here!
Loved it when Shumi pulled out the Brochure!😂
Also, you know it’s a good day when a MotorInc First drops! I just love to listen to Shumi and Kartikeya!
Thank you for the amazing Quality content guys!❤️
Happy to be here with you V!
23:35 the tiago/tigor have what i feel one of the most extensive coverage of these options:
1. NA Petrol MT
2. NA Petrol AMT
3. Diesel MT (1.05l pre BS6)
4. Turbo Petrol MT (JTP)
5. CNG + Petrol MT
6. CNG + Petrol AMT
7. EV
From what I recall, it was initially intended to be named the Zica, and Tata invested significantly in branding and visibility. Then, in an unfortunate twist of fate that severely impacted their marketing efforts, there was an outbreak of the Zika virus in India, forcing them to start over from scratch. They eventually settled on the name Tiago. This decision might also be related to Messi being their brand ambassador, as "Tiago" is the Portuguese variation of his son's name, I believe.
Noice! Thanks for the trivia!
I just love the intro and small touches you both add. Keep up the excellent work
Thank you! Will do!
I had a petrol 2002 Qualis till the end. Got it retrofitted with CNG in 2014, I had the average of 12 kms during summer of Delhi with AC n 14-16 kms/kg in winter. The point is I was strongly suggested to drive last few kilometers of the day while heading home to switch on to petro mode for lubrication n keep the injectors clean, which I did n never had any issues of any sort.
Qualis 😍! The cng tank mushy have made much of a dent in luggage space. 😆
Not really, despite tank’s capacity being 14 kg, it was placed beneath the third row bench seat so there was still 18 inches width for two midsize suitcases n if you fold down the backrest of the bench seat voila you had almost 700 lit. space. This Qualis was a top end variant with second row pilot seats.
I am hooked to your style of reviews. For anything comes new in market i just wait for your videos.
Thanks for making reviews fun 🎉
Awesome! Thanks Mahesh!
Shumi with the side eyes breaking the 4th wall omg 🤣🤣🤣 gets me everytime !
♥️😆
That one beep at 80 and continuous after 120...and the faces of your relaxed co-passengers switch, they look at you as if you are driving irresponsibly....that point resonated so well with me.
🤜🏽🤛🏽
Hey kartik, how are you doing man? The first review I saw of yours was of Kawasaki Versus 650. Im fond of your way of talking man and literally I mean it. Your choice of words, the proper punctuation etc etc......
Thanks for the comeback dude.
Thank you for joining us here VJ and for the encouragement! Please let us know if you have any feedback!
Is the hill hold not given in this car is a con? As in metro cities like mumbai pune in heavy traffic on elevation this would create a problem. Is creep function enough to climb a elevation from still stop,? Pls reply sir
Could you do a review of fronx hybrid. Is it any good to consider?
Love that you are doing more podcasts. Happy to listen❤
Thanks for being here with us!
I have zero interest in cars apart from the family commuting factor.. but I started watching you guys a lot.. Great conversation
Hullo again MS! Thank you!
What about electronics like ESC, Traction control and modes are available?
Kartik and Shumi. The way you discuss each point is great. Having been in the automobile business for 13 years, I've seen a lot of reviews, but the way you guys discuss each topic is awesome, and many times it's reflected in our opinions, such as adding mild hybrid to CNG+Petrol will solve the rage issue, and we may forget about it when we last visited the bunk. Keep up the good work.
Great to see Tata leading the way.. a couple of friends and i were discussing that there is no company fitted cng auto car.. all are manual.. and somebody should do something about it.. since all these are mostly driven in city with traffic and amt cng combo makes so much sense.. glad an indian brand is leading the way.. my jiju took an amt last year and fitted cng later for it to be used by his parents.. my didi.. like a city hatch.. it does void the warranty but he had no option
And more will follow!
Hi, Can you give comparison between Tiago CNG AMT(XT) vs EV LR(XT). As both of giving Range of 200km and mine running is 100km per day . For which should i go for?
I want your opinions with prolonged usage of cng cars, does it compromise the car chasis which supports the cng taken in boot. I believe in rough road use it might pierce the underbody and compromise the safety of car. Does in cng car the car body below the tank is reinforced?
You don’t need to worry about that. The tanks are tested for those scenarios and have multiple safe release mechanisms.
The thing Kartikey is referring to as the amount of energy per unit volume of CNG or petrol is packing, is called 'Calorific value' in nerd terms. It has a relation with density also, and it works like density too, (per unit of volume has how much mass, for calorific value it's per unit of volume has how much energy packed in)
Thanks so much VB! Glad to have a geek answer! Do you know what the difference is in calories terms between them?
@@motorinc as they are different states of matter, I don't know what will be the exact unit of calorific value. As to compare with liquid petrol, CNG has to be under very high pressures to be in a liquid state. Otherwise we cannot compare. Like CNG as a gas has a density of 7kg/m3 whereas petrol while liquid is like 700kg/m3. But looking at the milage numbers, the ratio of calorific values is roughly like 2/3rds of the petrol. So it depends a whole lot on the pressure in which the CNG is at. I may be wrong. Someone reading this can correct me if I'm wrong.
Gotcha - great basic explainer. Thank you VB! Will be super helpful to others too.
Great work Loved the review. I drive a Tata Taigo petrol AMT and I'm glad that Indian manufacturers are trying to push some new technology out. The name is long but I guess they had to call out what it was. This thing is already doing good as per a dealer in my area and I won't be surprised if we get Nexon with the same treatment.
Should happen sooner than later. And hello again AP! Hope all well!?
CNG availability is a real issue on highway connecting Pune and Kolhapur. Although almost 7-8CNG fuel pumps are present, almost none will have CNG available post 5pm
Pls sir,, tiago cng amt or punch ev which is the better...
I kinda enjoy Shumi's interruptions though. They add a quirk to the conversation.
I think my dad’s Brezza (the new one zxi) also doesn’t have it and so we ware having problems with the auto start stop system, and because we don’t drive much the hybrid battery is also not that charged which what the reason told to us by the service centre
I too don’t like the beeps at 80 and 120 😢
Hai sir,,tiago cng or punch ev which is the better .pls
I have a wagonr amt with retrofitted cng, and i love it, i am 100% sure that amt with cng will be very successful move for tata
Thanks for letting us know Sumit!

I was a regular visitor here as an auto enthusiast with the only intention to gain more info on the automobiles. But from this episode onwards, I will revisit this place considering the entertainment in mind well due to the humour involved in the discussion between Karthick and Shumi 😅
Come for the knowledges, stay for the humour. Works! 😆
What an episode, so good, so much fun, always love the banter and the points Shumi and Karthik make. Loved this episode so much. I have a big 7 Seater, and don't need to know about this small car at all, but man what a great episode. Cheers to the motor inc team for a great episode.
A boy's name of Portuguese origin, Tiago is a name that indicates strength and resilience. This variation of the more formal-sounding Santiago means “May God protect.” While its religious connotations may not be for everyone, it has a Portuguese lilt that just rolls off the tongue.
Thanks Tarun!
Tata should call up Shumi while adding anything to the name of the car for suggestions 😉
I love the way u guys have a conversation around a car.
Glad to know you enjoyed it!
Man Shumi is so good!!! A video with so much bang on Information, plus the fun banter which keeps you entertained and interested and in the end of the video you learn so much and have fun along with it. Way above any other review videos or formats across the globe. And I watch alot of them when i say that. Keep it up team
Hey OP! So awesome to hear that from you! ❤️
Hey Karthik, do you think the CVT in honda cars is a good option for a CNG A/T car?
Very much.. it’s a very efficient transmission. Would be a great combo.
Time well spent. Enjoyed the review.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Well for 10:30, I guess its not that tricky, I would just wait for CNG to get over and as per the official range it will going to be less than 300 kms anyways and then use Petrol to find the next nearest CNG pump :)
Agreed. Not a big hassle. But there could be batter way of doing things…
excellent discussion.
What is the cost involving in filling twin cng cylinders
HI Can we have any update on TVS Fiero
He team motor Inc please tell me is there a xpulse 210 coming and when is the launch any guesses my buying decision depends upon your reply or should i buy ns 200
It should be, KonRathod. We don't know when though
Shumi is always in banter mode while doing car reviews.. and dead serious while talking about bikes.. :D
You think he is biased? 🤣
@@motorinc he agreed in the video.. right??? 🤣
Possible to review the Tiago nrg? Donno if it’s different enough to make a video, but was different enough for me to go for the amt in forrest green
Please do FAQs on the electric version of Tiago and Tigor.
Yes, less interruptions by shumi this time. And summary too 💯. So when is ThisConnect S02 up🙌
How can we distract you for now!
Does CNG run a bit leaner too? Im assuming it would run richer than usual because of the lesser energy density of it unlike diesels where its leaner and the compression ratio is higher too which allows for better fuel efficiency.
I have answered my own question haven't i

Amazing review, loved the comedy 😄.
I do own a Tata Punch and recently drove a Tiago. It does feel a little lacking in power but only when you are on highways.
For Hills and City it's all good🙂
Thanks for sharing! How has your service experience been so far?
@@motorinc a few of my friends have been nagging about the service experience and the reliability of the TATA cars but surprisingly for me I've never faced any issue related to any of it.
The car always works even if it's really cold or hot.
I visited Khanpur kolian, haryana, 136118 dealership for all the services.
@@motorinc Service experience has been smooth so far for me and didn't face and reliability issue which tata cars are known for 🙂
Guys, the car is already a JTP! It's India's first 5 cylinder car although 2 of the cylinders are not in the engine if you want to be pedantic about it. Lame jokes apart, good concept from TATA for catering to an untapped section of the market. I do wish the TATA Tiago iCNG AMT JTP RS3's reliability makes the brochure woman smile as much as its mileage. Thank you, guys, for the mid-week treat and an entertaining discussion.
Hahahahhahahaa! It’s a 5 cylinder! OP!
Fantastic podcast as usual! Just wanted to know - do both of you reply to comments on behalf of MotorInc? Or do you have a person hired for the same?
It’s a very intelligent bot. 😬
Hey Krishna! Kartikeya and Shumi both respond to comments, as well as other members of the team. There's no one hired just for the comments though
@@motorinc😂😂
Great content motorinc. Very lucid yet comprehensive.👍🏽👍🏽👽The seemingly deliberate omissions of load sensors in the rear seat is a really sneaky attempt to cost cut… a trend that was set forth by Suzuki and is now being lapped up by other manufacturers. It reminded of a point that Schumi rightly pointed out about scooped out seats not becoming a norm fast enough. A true irony of sorts where manufacturers decide to pick and choose only the annoying Easter eggs to implement in their line of products.. 😬
Thank you so much UB! Let’s hope the trend reverses itself.
Wow that’s great summary ❤
Full Powahh!
what do you think is better sonet gtx plus dct or elevate zx cvt (for additional 2 lac) ?
If your daily drive is less then go for Hyundai else Honda.
Was just waiting
Can you guys please tell the name of the song you use in your intro
Why these podcast are so addictive 😖, just want to listen them whole day🌼💞
When this started, I liked Kartikey for the balanced approach. But now I have become fan of Shumi's blunt comments and sarcasm. The way he took a dig on EV industry at start and then gave it back for the CX pain on seatbelts.. just awesome. You should seriously start consulting companies on CX.
Bdw, I have observed that CNG network is not great once you start going down the Maharashtra towards South. Only NH4 has few pumps. Kolhapur one also recently became online I believe.. otherwise there were huge queues. And down till Kanyakumari you have very sparse network compared to north.
Good to know PI! Shumi is ❤️.
Let’s see how the network expands. Thanks for keeping us posted!
Hey Motorinc.
I just noticed the previous podcast on Hero Mavrick was on Google Podcasts but not on UA-cam Music's Podcast Section.

Hasn't Google killed it's podcast app?
@@Timbhu Not yet. But soon everything will be moved to UA-cam Music.
is the alignment thing refering to the old velar screen? it was tiltable and very odd at every angle
Nope - to the Nexon… check out the MotorInc First about that.
here in south delhi, cng availibilty depends on the timings. for some reason or the other its the 8-10 am and then 5-7 pm where you would have to wait for more than 30 mins for cng. other than that it will take you somewhere aroung 5-10 mins to wait in line.
i know that for other parts of delhi its worse.
Thanks for sharing that Tanish! Which CNG are you driving?
Last month I drove my Tigor CNG from Pune to Suratgarh, RJ. In my 1500km journey I was able to drive a little ahead of Palanpur in CNG (approx 1200 km). I took the Jamnagar - Amritsar express way which does not have any fuel pumps on the 550km stretch. On my way back I drove from Jodhpur city and was able to get CNG almost everywhere with hardly any chokepoints. In my total journey of 4000 km, I drove on petrol not more that 700 km.
Wow! How much did the trip cost you?
@@motorinc I used approx 115 kg of CNG which cost around 9.5k. (29km/kg).
Petrol approx 42 ltrs (17km/ltr as per the display on speedometer)
Total cost was around 14k.
Hi , can the tigor be the overall great first car ?
@@aakashzende3936 I personally feel that Tigor is a great car. I has balance of power, features, looks and safety. That being said, I think going for CNG is only a good option if you drive atleast 1500-2000 km a month and if you drive a lot in city traffic. If you drive only on the weekends/outsation dont bother with CNG as you will be compromising a lot on the boot space. Also the added weight of the tank is unneccary burden on the engine.
Can someone please tell me the location of the video where on one side the late / idk what that is and on the other side mountain is visible at 16:25
Hey! That's Tata's stock footage, Ankush, we wouldn't know where that is.
So what would you pick as a budget family car also being a reliable option between this and Hyundai i10?
Are you looking at the CNG variant of i10 Nios?
@@motorinc was leaning towards Tiago but wanted a more concrete opinion on which one does the CNG better...
@@gururajsawant both are good Drive both and then decide CNG is better on Tata but NVH is better on Hyundai
Also in tata one ecu is used while in maruti still two ecus are used for.petrol and cng. With single ecu is it better as in two ecus or it is just cost cutting measure.
An integrated Ecu will make the operation simpler and smoother.
If petrol is lubricating the engine, why are we filling the engine oil? Do sports cars also have this issue? Cold start and stuff?
Hello! They both do a job. The oil does lubricate but it also goes to more places than just the cylinder. It also helps take away heat from the cylinder. The fuel does the same on the inside.
I think nexon cng with outsell its petrol counterpart, the boot space in cng nexon seems comparable to petrol version, highly practical car
Should be a game changer.
Hi,
As you mentioned this CNG Tiago is good for cities so does it mean the regular Tiago is not good for Highways ?
No, the Tiago CNG has lower power. In petrol mode it has more but still not as much as the petrol-only Tiago. Hence the difference.
Thanks for the response 😊
Hello again....if you have not already done, may I request you to do a video on CNG technology, what we can expect, who it is best suited for (from this video I understood that it is a family car, means slow and steady wins the race types), More importantly safety aspects related to CNG. Basically one top notch video where people who are looking for alternate fuels should be able to decide whether they should opt for CNG or not.
Can do! Thanks PK!
@@motorinc thats great!
Samruddhi Mahamarg still keeps the crown of longest name in the history of the mankind. The lady on the Google maps suffers breathlessness when she navigates me towards that expressway. Tata Tiago iCNG AMT can come close second if they add 'JTP edition' in there :p
Hahahahahhaha AC! Epic.
Can you please review the MG Comet EV on MotorInc?
In my city there was no cng pump.
The first one is will be set to operate this month they say
Yes so finally!
It will be worth to buy a cng vehicle
My city Akola , Maharashtra
Any idea till when can next generation of tiago be launched?
As current version is now very old as it was launched in 2016
We don’t want to guess. But, it’s long overdue.
In Pune I never suffer for cng, most of the time there is no waiting, sometime there is a queue of 1 or 2 cars, that's it. I own a 2nd hand sx4 vxi 2008 model with retro fitted authorized cng kit, I am getting 20 km/kg in city and 25 on highway.
Thanks so much AS for sharing your motoring life! That is helpful.
Tiago is a common south american name and yes petrol mode is peppy, one thing though it is comfortable for 5,11 rider lioe me just the headroom at front is lesser, i have done a 700 km straight 14 hour ride with two 1 hour stops in between over decent highway roads and no issues whatsoever in terms of back ache or soreness along with family❤❤ not to mention the metal and bumper plastic quality is way hard than normal maruti or hyundai cars
Thanks for sharing HV! Awesome to hear about your trip and the feedback.
Much awaited. Great car and a fantastic story. 💯

Just one query, if you guys might be interested in answering:
I recently came across some videos and blogs discussing you guys and your opinions and videos. Lets say, they weren't really pleasant to say about someone (at the least). Weren't offensive, those guys, but were certainly not happy with your (extravagant) content. I'd just like to know if you guys have ever come across such instances, and what were your thoughts.😅

Do you mean the moving shots in the video? Those're not our footage, Rajeev.
Hey. I’m a newbie on how CNG or any other cylinders are designed and the rationale behind it. However, I was wondering, can the cylinders come in rectangular shapes? That way there might be more space in the boot.
Google "why cylinders are cylindrical" you will get the answer
Long story short: it has to do with uniform pressure
Thanks Sumit! Short answer - strength and durability.
@@motorinc Ok. But who is Sumit?
Hey Naveen, that comment was for Sumit, who replied to you first
I own a cng baleno, and considering the point of running for 10kms in petrol after running 300 kms in cng kinda defeats the purpose of being seamless in background. If I start my car everyday and just go, my car would automatically switch from petrol to cng without me being worried about gumming of fuel injectors. While the solution implemented by Tata would make a user conscious that "oh i need to switch to petrol" and manually switch to petrol.
I have wagon R cng and I have faced pump checked problem on highway run after the Pune region where I want to clock more KM while going to native place like Satara and sanagli, even cng pump are very few there.
Thanks for sharing! CMG availability is poor in non-metros.

just out of curiosity, strong hybrids like invicto and grand vitara are delivering mileage close to 20kmpl which is quite good considering their size but why maruti is not introducing strong hybrids on already full efficient small cars maybe like ignis or baleno (will they be able to return 30+kmpl)
They’re coming…
Here in J&K, there are no CNG stations. Maybe due to CNG's lack of power in the hills. Maybe the Jammu region can have CNGs but people generally prefer an economical petrol car or directly get an EV.
Makes sense, at higher altitudes it will struggle more. Thanks for sharing Ayush! Which city are you in?
@@motorinc Jammu. It's relatively plain in Jammu City. However the altitude starts to climb quickly when one follows NH44 towards Srinagar.
♥️
I don't see too long queues for CNG in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Things have gotten much better now.
Awesome! So you have a CNG?
@@motorinc No. But couple of my friends do. I own a couple of 8-9 year old diesels(me & my dad). Both cars have clocked over 2 lac kms. Maybe it's time to switch to CNG AMT, give our left knee some respite 😊
In PRAYAGRAJ there is que, which is basically over 5-10 cars all the time as far my interaction to the CNG pumps
Thanks NS! Appreciate the update from Prayagraj! 😊
The queue at the CNG pumps are directly proportional to the filling pressure available at that pump (excluding the pumps in outside city limits).
If pressure is above 200bar, we get more Kilos of CNG in tank. If pressure is low then people avoid going to those pumps.
Thanks for letting us know Siddarth!
Nice
Hey,
Great informative video!
I'm having that exact expressions like that a girl on brochure just because now we have AMT option in CNG Car as currently driving CNG, Manual Car
Haha! Nice!
Also I hope it should be a boon for cab drivers
Fun fact: The Tiago is a small tank that is painted in blue and runs on clean energy 😂
In the video at 20:00 it is mentioned as CNT& AMT together. Is it CNT or CNG?
CNG!
As you said that on highways it will feel compromised, but if we drive on petrol then what is the case?
It’s calm on CNG and zippy enough on petrol. Hope that helps!
