My biggest gripe about the current automakers is price to engine size, why am I paying 15-17 lakhs for a turbo charged Alto K10 engine put in a car that's clearly too big for that engine. I would rather see a 1.5L or a 2.0L engine car in that price range. The biggest culprits are VW / Skoda and Tata with their 1L 3 cylinder petrol engines in cars that cost well above 10 Lakh rupees. Biggest Con job in Indian automotive history. How is Mahindra able to a offer a powerful decent sized 2.0L engine in their cars at 15 - 17 Lakh rupees but VW and Tata can offer an engine only half that size for the same price.

Curious to know why you think VW is a culprit. They do offer lovely 1.5 turbo engine option for the people who want it.

Diesel is vilified in the passenger vehicle segment because Gadkari's sugar lobby can't blend ethanol into diesel fuel. Our whole economy still runs on diesel.

Sun roof is basically, Also, a ‘Hole in the roof’ feature, makes it hard for buyers to avoid it, cause all Top models, where we have must have features like Start stop, seat height adjust, Auto IRVMs, Auto Climate controls, decent infotainment, etc, they come with this ‘Hole in the roof’ feature, which, when you avoid, you miss many must have features! Hope come with opting out Sunroof for all models!

Thoroughly enjoyed the podcast. It's a Shame that in India people buy sunroof cars because of the kids but that was never the purpose of sunroof in the first place, it's a safety hazard as well. One good thing that happened in the last few years is that Indians are more aware about safety and they are demanding a good safe car .

I disagree at 27:48 about US taking a binary decision. US has had several hybrids that too from a very long time. Let's not forget that Toyota Prius, corolla hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid and camry hybrid are extremely popular in the US even if we leave other cars aside. Moreover, we still have not seen plug-in hybrids come to mainstream in India
Indians have very recently realised the benefits of Hybrids. Up until a few years ago the Camry was barely selling. It is seeing much better volumes at least where i live.

The SUVs paraded in India are just hatchbacks with beefed up arches and fake inserts to make them look like something they are NOT. The height of insanity are the Sunroofs for sticking loved ones out of the Car!!! RIP Logic 😅

Does the value of car/market include taxes? I paid almost 50% tax+insurance on Indian car. We are25% of the US market(8% tax) by value because our indirect tax structure is punishing on basic “luxury” like transport.

I hope car mfgs bring more sedans specially the premium mid range like Civic, Octavia, Corolla, Jetta, etc. with different fuel options specially strong hybrids like Honda's and Toyota's. But with nice designs, nowadays designs are getting weird by each generation irrespective of brand and price segment.

Now the demand is again affected adversely by new policy of 10 yrs diesel n 15 yrs petrol- it has created tremendous confusion n many are waiting as what happens next especially out of NCR.Heavy focus n working on EV vehicles vis a vis lack of supporting infrastructure, including suitable roads besides charging facilities, expectations of further reduction in taxes on EVs. Diesel enthusiasts are left with very little or no choice as one spends near one Cr and becomes zero at the end of 10 th year.

I loved the detailed discussion with facts, but try to include or propose to our Government (as you are in a powerful space and your feedback accounts) that what policies will help Consumer to have a value for their money spent in Registration tax (28% - 45%), Insurance( 15% - 25%), Toll rates (only God knows the calculation rule) If our Government reduces these with a optimal rates, then our FY25 sales figures will move in increasing trend.

The make or break in the Indian market is the "TAXES", Dadhagiri by the Govt will see prices going up plus the price gouging by OEM's. Cars are heavily taxed and literally taxes make up 40-50% of the vehicles on road price yet what we get back is miniscule compared to what we pay. For a car worth Rs 20L actual value is only Rs 10L

    Some questions:
    1. Did the CAR market jump up at the cost of 2-Wheeler market? That would somewhat show that people are actually indulging in CARs rather than just awaiting COVID to go away and then resuming purchase
    2. How did the 2-Wheeler market perform?
    3. If Interior, SunRoof, Safety is so paramount then how WagonR, Swift, Baleno are outselling everything else? I guess the three things are paramount only for a given niche, but given the economic parameters of our entire nation, most prefer something thats extremely economic to drive. I know people would bash Maruti's calling them TINCAN but the rock solid reliability, service cost, running cost and the frikking beautiful CLUTCH is something that most people feel the most. Heck even Hyundai and TATA could not make a CLUTCH thats even half the quality of a MARUTI and that's sad

Design Innovation has been fairly limited in the sedan segment. Expect for Hyundai, no other brand has offered regular systematic updates to its Sedan. Poor roads are also one reason Indians are preferring SUVs over Sedans. Clearly with more innovation, there will be more takers for Sedans.

Sunroof is the most useless feature in cars for India. Ofcourse it is also compromising the safety of the vehicle. Foolish people allow kids to poke their heads out of it, which is illegal and very dangerous. It also reduces headroom inside the car.
Instead of gimmicks, companies should make hybrid cars with lesser features
