Ray and Faye Copeland seemed like your average couple living a simple life on their farm. As they got older, they hired labor to help them keep up with the chores which didn’t seem unusual. What was unusual was when their hired help began disappearing.

I BECAME homeless because my landlady was "kiting" her property. She wasn't making her mortgage payment, would let it fall into default, then quit claim deed it to the uneducated, 1st generation immigrant handyman then have a friend of hers, a loan officer who worked at several banks during the 20+ years she did this, refinance the property & borrow enough extra to pay the amount in default: robbing Peter to pay Paul. She repeated the process over & over again, passing the property back & forth several times. $30,000, $70,000, $100,000, another $100,000...till, in 2012 she owed $375,000 for the property she originally purchased for $50,000 in the late 1980s, with -271% equity & a $2200/month payment.
Since the housing bubble had burst in 2008, & banks were no longer approving loans that people couldn't afford to pay, & were scrutinizing documents more, her friend could no longer help her refinancing anymore, & the scheme finally caught up with her.
Unfortunately, I was the rent-paying tenant in good standing in the 2nd house on the property when the bank FINALLY foreclosed. On moving day, I tripped over a box & dislocated my knee & had to be taken to the hospital via ambulance. In all the excitement, no one remembered to lock my front door. When I returned that night, I found my home ransacked, & everything of value, all my tools, & the $3000 cash I'd withdrawn from my bank that morning to give to my new landlord for move-in...gone. I didn't have another $3000 in the bank. I didn't have enough money left to rent another place at all.
I spent 6 years & 4 months living in the streets until I FINALLY found someone willing to give me a chance & rented their guest house to me. That was over a year ago, & I've paid my rent on time every month, like I always have.
Not all homeless people are drug-addicted, mentally ill criminals. All of them, however, are human beings. ✌🏼

Anyone ignorant and conceited enough to believe homeless people are somehow lesser probably won't change their mind, as doing that would be conceding that homeless people are worth just as much as they are a human, and some people base their whole personality around who they are "above".

That was funny - you never think of needing to explain the process! Cheques are rarely used any more so it stands to reason it's a thing of the past. The bugger was having to wait for a cheque to be cashed while the bank verified it at their leisure.

@@cjvaye99 oh then the old way of processing credit cards would blow your mind. They used to take your card and place it in a small, hand powered “machine”. The machine would have a paper loaded into it where info would have to be filled in. This machine had a thing in the top that would slide from one side to the other and at the same time pressed the card into the slip of paper whic had a sheet of carbon paper between two slips. The carbon paper and machine would create an imprint of your credit card. Then the clerk would fill in the amounts and other info that they needed to do. Then the customer would sign the slip and one copy would stay at the till and the other would b given back to the customer. So essentially you could go and buy many things on a credit card befor reaching the limit because there no computers swiping your card info. Same idea as the cheque kiting because by the time the credit card company would figure it all out and finally be calling you and sending letters of collection. Also made it a lot easier to use stolen credit cards

Great video, but just to clarify people often stopped going to school after the eighth grade. There would be an eighth grade graduation ceremony, then they could pay to go to high school back in the day. I know this personally because of my grandparents here in Arkansas. My grandmother actually went to eighth grade twice just because she liked school so much. It was very common for people to only have an eighth grade education during that time, but they weren’t considered dropouts, they just couldn’t pay to go to high school for whatever reason. High school was optional back then, like college is today. :)

    • @cpfs936

Not to mention, an eighth grade education was quite sufficient. There was little fluff in the curriculum. There are those of us whose parents and grandparents could do math in their heads while you were still feeding them the numbers.

That’s crazy. My grandparents were born in the early 1920’s and they both went to college. However, we are Swedish, so all schooling is free so maybe that’s why. It’s sad that it’s such a difference between countries. In some countries kids might never go to school at all because it’s expensive or too far from their village or they have to help their parents to make money so they can eat.

Um, many places had been using debit cards for quite a while by the late 80s- in backwater Saskatchewan where I grew up, the local credit unions started issuing them about the time I graduated from high school in 1981, and by the mid 80s most retailers had point of sale machines. I remember being surprised when we visited my wife’s grandparents in North Carolina in the mid 90s, and debit cards and machines didn’t seem to exist there yet, and flabbergasted when we visited some other family in Texas the better part of a decade later and standard procedure in the grocery stores there still seemed to be pulling out a check book- nary a debit machine in sight. Not sure how I feel about implanted microchips, although it’s inarguable that they would be harder to lose or have lifted than a wallet, and I’ve frankly never seen the point of cryptocurrency for anyone other than drug dealers and international assassins, but cell phone based e-transfers for some kinds of transactions and protected payment platforms like PayPal for some other kinds of transactions seem to me to offer safe and convenient ways to do business in a wide range of situations.

Her reality testing was sufficient to show she knew right from wrong. She even knew her government was not approving murder. When I think of all the lives so mercilessly ended, and all the relatives bereaved--apparently, many with no closure to this day--for this couple's selfish gain, I don't have any pity for either of them, and think they both should have been immediately hanged (a la Nuremburg justice). Thought so 35 yrs ago when this story broke, and never had a reason to change. Seems that it's about properly placed sympathies with the victims and not with the perpetrators.

I live 30 minutes from Mooresville. I've heard this story before and I guess never paid attention to the location.
And the fact that I've never heard about this case until I heard it on YT, is actually kinda sad.
I'm 31 and I've always lived in Misery.
Here where I live, I have cousins EVERTWHEREEEEEEE. I'm literally related to ALMOST everyone around here so I refused to date anyone in my area. I just checked Ancestry and I have ATLEAST 2 dozen Copelands in my tree. I almost guarantee I'm related to Ray and Faye.
EDIT: I just double checked-double checked Ancestry, and I am in fact, related to these 2. They are my 4th-6th cousins.

I remember as a kid in high school driving around backroads with friends and went to that very property one night. Of course, crossing the do not cross crime scene tape still being on site. Anyway, the shallow grave was still dug out and visible in the barn. Very eerie place and feel. Took a small piece of the wooden barn as a souvenir, have no idea what happened to it. Anyway, there’s literally nothing else to do in rural small town Missouri, than go drinking driving and ghost hunting. 🤷‍♀️

Some of the information is vague. I'm from Livingston County, Missouri and now live in the town where the bank Jack went to actually is and knew the owner of the car dealership. There's actually a good book about these two. "The Copeland Killings..." by Tom Miller. You're more apt to get correct information.

I love how people like ray can hold intense hatred in their hearts for down on their luck street rovers because they’re homeless even though he himself was a missed payment or i guess non payment away from being homeless himself, and on top of that a thief as well and not even a half good thief either. The unyielding ability to judge others is apart of being human unfortunately but it gets truly ridiculous when you notice we tend to judge those who’s sins mirror our own even more harshly. I guess it’s because we see ourselves in them and don’t like the thought that someone we see as inferior to us may actually be a lot like us therefore taking from us the notion that we alone are responsible for the “fact” that we are superior to that individual and instead shines a light on the actual fact of reality that there are alot more similarities than differences between you and that so-called “low-life” leading you to the realization when logically assessed properly that the real dress on your life turned out a little better than his which lead you to believe you were better than him is due to mostly random and uncontrollable factors surrounding your birth and placement in the social food chain which is because of the actions of your ancestors not you that made the real differences between your life path and that of the lowly bottom feeder you so proudly claim superiority over. The fact your in a better position in life than another person at this moment in time has absolutely no connection to you being a better person in any regard. Think about that next time you think your better than someone. Lol jk 😂

@31:00 - It was determined that Faye had written the list because it matched her handwriting and Ray was illiterate. An illiterate person doesn't go around conjuring check-fraud schemes and coaxing people to open P.O. boxes and bank accounts. Sounds to me like Faye was the master mind all along and Ray was following orders. And of course she would claim batter spouse syndrome when it came down to who's going take the fall. The attempts to excuse her even in the smallest way is pretty insulting to the viewers.

I agree with you. I also wonder about their children….did any of them work with their parents? It’s clear that Ray was a horrible human being but I don’t believe he was the mastermind….she had ample opportunity to prevent the murders….she wanted the money and didn’t care how they got it!
