Janis will always hold a special place in my heart, I wasn’t born when she was around but my goodness.. I love her so much ♥️♥️♥️ such a beauty inside and out
This is awsome thanks to the uploader for this. Don Sturdy is Howard Hesseman who later went on to the successful WKRP in Cincinnatti. It must have been great to met Janis in person this was shortly before she passed away sadly from a heroin overdose.. RIP Janis we love you, and thanks for your music and your incredible sense of humor. You are missed and died too young :(
i think you really see how shy Janis actually was, she wasn't comfortable around other people, you could tell watching any of here television interviews a lot of that had to do with her growing up and being made fun of by her peers and she proved all of them wrong with becoming so legendary with her music. She always fought to be accepted and loved. Sadly she was by a lot of people just never realized it because it seemed there was always people there trying to take advantage of her. :(
I’m in my mid 20s and wasn’t at all alive during the time Janis Joplin was but my god I LOVE HER. I don’t love or relate to her just because she was a great singer but because her life story is VEEEERRRYY similar to mines. I’ve been bullied in school, called ugly, bullied by my parents and siblings, I feel like I’ve been beat down, chewed up and spit out by this whole world and it’s left me feeling like a hollow shell. I feel like a dead person walking a lot of the time but when I watch videos of her and see her having fun and laughing it makes me not feel so bad about all that I’ve been through and continue to go through till this day. R.I.P Miss Joplin She was legendary and didn’t even know it. What a shame but I guess that’s how the cookie crumbles. 😕😒🌹🥀🕊️❤
Yes, that is indeed Howard Hesseman. He at the time lived on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco and had an empty Sturdy Dog Food bag nailed to his front door, hence the stage name.
This was 1969 .Janis got her start on the music scene in 1967 . But I do believe even bigger things were in store for her had she not died in 1970 ( Super stardom )
Talk about luck and young love. I met Janice Joplin in 1968 while I was in 9th grade - age 15. We met at the Memphis Mid South Coliseum about an hour before the doors officially opened for ticket holders to enter the arena. She was the opening music act (obviously mis-billed) for an all black southern radio station's annually sponsored event called The WDIA Goodwill Review (AM Radio). I was a hired usher for the event & she walked right up to me friendly as can be. We spoke about 10 or 15 minutes then she gave me an autograph which, because of young love, I immediately passed it on to my girlfriend at the time. :/ Neither Janice nor her band, Big Brother & The Holding Company received anything close to a welcome reception as most audience members were expecting tunes by famous or upcoming black artists/bands who would be playing their hits heard on the radio. Although Memphis is a Blues mecca ..an unknown Texas/California Blues band is NOT the same animal. After her set I heard that she swore she'd never play in Memphis again! Though I gave a piece of history away - because it was for love - which is always the right reason at least thankfully no one will ever erase the memory of it! PS, I also ushered shows for Jimi Hendrix (2 different shows), Sly & The Family Stone, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Tommy James & the Shondells, Sergio Mendez/Brazil 66 & many others. After a sound check one of the guitarists for The Classics Four (Spooky, Stormy, Traces Of Love, etc.) actually taught me the chords for Spooky ..which happened to be chords I'd wind up using in later years in several songs by Pink Floyd! ;)
According to the most recent bio of Janis Joplin she was friends with Howard Hesseman from way back (they met in San Francisco before she joined Big Brother)
This was an unbelievably dumb audience. You give them a simple assignment and they blow it. How hard can it be to find answers like joy, fear, nausea, anger and sadness? Pathetic.
Nausea is not an emotion. But anyhoos. .. fun fact- if i havent mentioned this before.. Janis and Howard Hessman knew each other years before she was famous. Her first excursion to California. Its cool to see them together here. They had a great friendship and a wee bit of a relationship thing goin on when they were younger. Long before this. Love em both .
Janis is si beautiful and soft spoken and she is so real and down to earth and wish she coukd have stsy here and Michael Thomas is still living. But I dont know about test of this group but rest in peace JANIS AND MR CALVETT
Only yellow outfit I have seen her over the years and either commercials TV she was an actress. The committee was an unusual group of comedians... They were on a lot of TV shows and stuff doing their their act I wonder how many people he remember them...
These were nutty times, but that doesn't mean JJ was one of the most talented entertainers ever to step on stage. On top of that, look at the kooks out there today, covered in tattoos and with fishing tackle hanging from their noses. What a world!
Body art predates TV actually.tattoos piercings and scarification are ancient tribal arts.u might not like them but maybe some people don't like somethings about u.it takes all sorts to make a world Live and let live.as long as they are not hanging the hooks off any of your body parts I say let them live how they want
This has got to be one of the most idiotic things to ever appear on television. How demeaning to force Janis Joplin - one of the greatest soul singers in history - to participate in this train wreck.
It would have been great to see Odetta Jones the black female singer Janice Joplin use to imitate on stage together. ua-cam.com/video/2A9askVdzI8/v-deo.html

I love watching anything about Janis.

I wish I had of met Janis when she was alive.I love this woman and she has so much love to give to the world.
@Steve Edwards What kind of paint job was it?
Janis will always hold a special place in my heart, I wasn’t born when she was around but my goodness.. I love her so much ♥️♥️♥️ such a beauty inside and out

Swamp Witch yup, and the guy presenting is the same actor who played the DJ Bobby Boogie on the 1st season WKRP episode, Hold Up.
Sadly, Dr. Johnny "Fever" Caravela, is off the air as of 1/30/22. He's gone to that great gig in the sky. Peace, brother.
Nicely said.
You’ve been gone forever for 51 years today, but I never forget you, I’ll never forget you. I love you Janis!
Janis seems so sweet and kind.
i think you really see how shy Janis actually was, she wasn't comfortable around other people, you could tell watching any of here television interviews a lot of that had to do with her growing up and being made fun of by her peers and she proved all of them wrong with becoming so legendary with her music. Yes, that is indeed Howard Hesseman. He at the time lived on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco and had an empty Sturdy Dog Food bag nailed to his front door, hence the stage name.

This is awesome! Some rehearsals and they could have cut an album.
the long haired blond guy in the top row is HOWARD HESSEMAN!
One of the early improvisation groups- The Committee from SF
you'll see Howard hessman using his stage name Don Sturdy

omg i just realized the blonde haired hippie is Dr.Johnny Fever!
janis was so shy when she was singing so soft spoken and a little unsure what to do or say
Incredible what passed as entertainment back then!
So, the audience was unfamiliar with emotions.
Yes and this is in the peace and love period! Really weird.
This was an unbelievably dumb audience. You give them a simple assignment and they blow it. How hard can it be to find answers like joy, fear, nausea, anger and sadness? Pathetic.
It is Hesseman using the alias, "Don Sturdy".
It's too bad they don't have tv like this anymore. A great mixture of education and entertainment.
Oh the good old 1960s.
My son's favourite MENU ! JAYDON MANT MANT'S FAVOURITE SONG !!!!

I'm 62 with long gray hair but I Wish by here looked as good as Genesis and was that long, short hair looks square even today
Howard Hesseman, later Johnny Fever, here Don Sturdy looks so young. At least it's before the velour suit he wore in Billy Jack.
That was great!!So expressive.

Jessica Myerson was one of the improv pioneers. She worked at Second City started the Committee and went on to SNL

The way janis was doing 😂😂😂 oh my lord
Don Sturdy is Howard Hesseman.
janis looked like she wanted to run away from this goofy setup very, very fast
\
What is it that "Don Sturdy" (aka Howard Hesseman) is responding to at 1:47? What did the audience member say?
I think it was "queer".
ahahahah great!
The times baby..you dig?
amziliant!
Do people, smoke on TV shows today? Boy times have changed!
I guess even Janis Joplin has that one bad song.
Only yellow outfit I have seen her over the years and either commercials TV she was an actress. The committee was an unusual group of comedians... They were on a lot of TV shows and stuff doing their their act I wonder how many people he remember them...

Who is the guy with the Mr. T starter kit?

This has got to be one of the most idiotic things to ever appear on television. How demeaning to force Janis Joplin - one of the greatest soul singers in history - to participate in this train wreck.
She looked like she was having more fun than anyone.
Bloody he'll what did you give them janis

Wonder if Janis n Dick ever hooked up..they woulda been a cute couple
Maybe if Janice would have been doing this the night she overdosed maybe she would be alive today.
Exactly
that was funny.
The 60s in a nutshell.
😳😂🤣🤧😘
It would have been great to see Odetta Jones the black female singer Janice Joplin use to imitate on stage together. ua-cam.com/video/2A9askVdzI8/v-deo.html
It was frustration...
What a stupid game. Poor Janis.
my father is rusdi. who is this?
1:38 Does he say queer?
Maybe well handle that after the show lmao
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
