In Dennis Rodman's autobiography, he said there were only 2 White players that would not be intimidated. Larry Bird and Danny Ainge. Bird had too much confidence in his game and his skills. Ainge was just nuts.
He also was an amazing golfer. He actually could have gotten his PGA card in 82 but didn't qualify because at that time you had to play in at least 4 tournaments a year and he didn't have the time.
Keep golf out of "athletic" discussions. It's a bullsh*t skill game, not a sport. Haven't watched one second of it since they decided to take MBS human rights abusing Saudi money. Shame on all of them!
I’ve been saying this about Danny Ainge ever since I saw him playing professional baseball at third base for the Toronto Blue Jays while STILL in college at BYU and starring in Basketball. Absolutely mind blowing. I’m not sure if this is true or not but I remember hearing the reason he was still eligible to play college basketball is that he was playing a different sport professionally!
Shoots a beautiful double leg takedown on tree Rollins set of balls on this fella. Love you Mr. Ainge. I was 14 in 86. You are a god a legend in your own right. Thank you from a Taunton mass. Kid. You are a basketball god. No doubt. Thank you Mr. Ainge sir. Sincerely.
@@Big_Tex Very interesting! There have been a fair amount of professional athletes who have played other professional sports during their career tenures! Beyond fascinating how they were able to combine the two!
you missed a few - JIm Brown was an All --American at Syracuse in both Lacrosse and Football, Dave DeBusschere was an all - American in College in both Baseball and Basketball and played for both the Yankees and Knicks
Ainge was great, but let's talk about another triple threat. In his senior year of high school, Joe Mauer was the USA Today High School Player of the Year in two sports, and twice was named all-state in a third. In two years as starting QB at Cretin Derham Hall in St Paul, Mauer threw for 5528 yards and 73 TDs. He batted .567 in four years playing for the same school's varsity baseball team, striking out only once in four seasons. And as a senior he batted .605. And Mauer averaged over 20 points per game and was named all-state twice in basketball. Mauer chose baseball over football and basketball, was the first catcher ever to win a batting title in the American League (eventually winning three), and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in the 2024 class. Who's to say who was the best prep athlete of all time?
@@USR__ That's the same for the athletes listed below who I often see mentioned, and I doubt any could have been a top 5 pick in both sports besides Elway. We all know that the greatest athlete ever is actually Chuck Norris. I mean, if you look in the very back of the Guinness book of world records it even states 'Chuck Norris holds all of the world records. These are the people that got the closest to him.'
You are right, he is not fully appreciated athletically. That said his performance in MLB was ... poor. Light hitting, no power, too tall and lanky to be a middle infielder, too weak at the plate to be anything else. You might say he would have developed into and good player given time and focus, and that may be true. The Blue Jays thought so and rushed him through the minors faster than might have been warranted hoping to convince him to drop basketball and go full time in baseball. And it almost worked. I think he made the right choice in the end. He was never an All-NBA kind of player, but he was a productive member of championship teams and calling him hard nosed would be an understatement. He was one of a kind.
Does Wilt not exist?! 😂 Danny Ainge is a sad little man compared to Wilt. Now I'm not saying Danny Ainge should be underrated, because he definitely is underrated, but GOAT? Nah.
"Greatest athlete"? I propose a Superstars competition with him, Jim Brown, and Bo Jackson in their prime. I can tell you that Danny would not come out on top.
Dave Winfield, George Carter, Jim Brown, and Jim Thorpe were all better athletes than Ainge besides the 3 others mentionned (Jackson, Ward, and Sanders). Ainge wasn't making it in MLB so he went pro in basketball. Good athlete but not great.

This is where I have to stop the BS. HE wasn't even CLOSE to being a PGA tour caliber golfer. Not even close. He was a weekend hacker.
Didnt know that. Shouldnt be surprised. Everybody loves golf.

Great video, man.
Much appreciated!
Great piece on a great athlete. Thanks for showing Ainge some love.
That was very decent and modest of you, to credit this man for his achievements, you are a true Gentleman"
Definitely the greatest high school athlete of all time.
Thank you for putting this out there. Every time I tell somebody this, they don’t believe me and I have to find a video and now I got one.
Didn't know all these details about Danny. Good video.
Danny ainge was as cold as Bird at times. In the playoffs he scored 22 against the Lakers in a half.
love Ainge but cold as Bird is pushing it
tell us you know nothing about basketball without telling us
Ainge set the stage for Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson. Danny Ainge was a lethal athlete.

Yes, you can go pro in one sport and maintain amateur status in another.

A north Eugene high School graduate. Proud! I graduated in his class of 1977❤

Let's not forget how he fleeced the Nets with that Garrett and Pierce trade
Don't forget Chuck Connors (the Rifleman) He played pro baseball and Basketball
Jim Thorpe #1 multi-sport athlete! 💪😎💖
When Dennis Rodman say you nuts, you nuts.
I grew up an NBA Fan and had no idea Charlie Ward was also a pro football player! Wow!
I never paid attention to him in the NBA but yeah in 1993 he had a great year as the Florida State QB, won the Heisman and won the NCAA championship.

He never played pro football
He didn’t go to the NFL because he expected to be a 1st round pick so chose NBA
Brian jordan played with the falcons NFL and cardinals ,Braves ,etc .MLB

Lol I like how danny ainge would fight tree rollins
I went to BYU and saw many of his games. But there just had to be other great athletes that lettered in three sports, wouldn't you say?
Lettered, sure. But All-American in all 3?
Couldn't stand Ainge when he played for the Celtics, i think he bit Tree Rollins once. Gotta hand it to him though, he took on all comers.
Jim Thorpe
or Bo Jackson in more modern times. Deion close 2nd better resume but not a freak of nature

Danny is a great and successful athlete. But greatest of all time.. Even he would not say that.
The greatest so far, hands down, Jim Thorpe......
You fail to remember Jim Thorpe. The greatest athlete.
How is MLB MVP and 1st Team All American WR at Michigan State Kirk Gibson not mentioned near the top of all these lists?
Bcus he didn’t do multiple sports on a pro level
