- These boots are akin to skin… and no we’re not talking about leather. Two trends have been rocking the world of fashion recently; “Trompe L’Oeil” or “Trick of The Eye”, which is all about making you do a double take at an outfit, and ugly shoes. But this isn’t the first time we’ve seen skin boots, it dates back to the 90s! Is this what they mean by ‘Skin is In’?

Tabi aren't (originally) shoes; those shoes are designed around Japanese tabi, which are socks designed to be worn with certain footwear such as zori.

@@mightymeatymech they are certainly something you need to get used to but tabi are usually made out of thin white cotton (think dress shirt). They are made double layered so there are no seams that can rub against your foot. In Japan there are actually stores that offer made to measure tabi so they fit your feet perfectly but for casual day to day wear you can also buy stretchy ones that look like socks 💜 I personally find the shoes that go with them, Zori, harder to get used to.
As a french person, the "trompe-l'œil" got me bursting out laughing in the middle of the night 😂😂

@tireliani I am French also, sorry if my English is wrong, but I will try to put it into English sounds. Up to my understanding, it would be how the English would say "tromp-uh-looey"
If it is not clear, it is the "oo" as I believe to be in the word "foot", and the "ey" is like if you said "ee", and at the end there is the Y sound, almost as a "yuh" but not so defined, and it is that Y sound I hope that I conveyed in my spelling. Do not say the "ee" to strongly although, it is more that after the "oo" you bring the tongue forwards in the Y sound as if it were following an "ee".
I am unsure how clear this is. I do not speak English sounds often but I think this is how the word would be spelled if in the English sounds. I hope this is clear on how it should be pronounced, but I am sure even if said in the way of the woman in the video it will be clear as to the word. Again, please have patients for poor English as I am not so confident in the grammar of the language :D

They were based off traditional Japanese footwear but these have been adapted. I think tabi in Japan was never worn like this so it was new in the 90s in a different way.
Also I’m pretty sure tabi was a sock, meant to be used with a sandal 🩴 like footwear like geta. This was a shoe on its own I think

Funny thing is tabi had an actual use. They allowed to spread out the toes to better you balances and mobility, unlike normal shoes that cramp them into the narrow space at the front. Shoes like this have evolved to separate all toes to increase the effect

For some reason, these boots remind me of the pantyhose women can buy that are specifically made to ward off predators by making the legs wearing them look COVERED in hair. And that’s not hyperbole, it looks like you could braid the hair on the legs together and rent them out as a fence.

Fun fact:during the 1300’s, men’s shoes were actually the height of style, or should I say length? The longer the toe of the shoe, the more popular and regal the man wearing them was said to be, as working men needed shorter toes to be able to work in fields, while nobles and royalty could afford longer toes since they didn’t have to move around as much. In fact, one man’s shoes were so long, they are estimated to be 21 inches and he had to grab the toes, pull them to his knees and hold them in order to climb stairs.
