When I first retired I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. After years of being a nurse, up at 4am and going until well after 5pm, I needed time to slow it all down. It took me awhile, but now I get up at my leisure and decide what I’ll do that day. In the summer my gardens call to me and it does my heart good to grow flowers and vegetables. What keeps me home is canning and cooking and freezing goodie’s.
I have my cross stitching and quilting to keep me busy in the evening and slow me down from the day’s activities.
    Happy Mother’s Day

Home is my safe and happy place. I love to work in my flower beds, quilt, make all the things like project bags, pillows, pin cushions, etc, cross stitch and crochet just to name a few. I still work part time from home but I have never had a boring moment! I love family and home and work to make our home comfortable and happy. Especially for my husband of almost 46 years. ♥️

What makes my heart stay home? My plants, reading, knitting, watching movies, cross stitching, sitting on my front porch, listening to my grandkids who live next door. My daily coff e and bible devotions. I LOVE being home - I am never bored here or tire of being here.

Retirement is the best! I love all the crafty things - quilting, cross stitching, reading- but I also love my garden. There aren't enough hours in a day to do all the things I want to do, but at least now I have time to do them. I also have a day each week during the summer to spend with my granddaughter. We take little road trips to parks and the pool. Spending quality time with her is a blessing.

Retirement is wonderful! I don’t have enough time to do all that I want to do…rug hooking, knitting, x-stitch, punch needle, quilting, sewing, cooking, gardening, decorating, reading, …,oh so many things!!!! You will love it!! I love being home!

You will love retirement, I've been retired for a year now and I wake up every morning and say to myself, "I don't have to go to work, I better get up!" Every day is an adventure! What keeps my heart home is quilting and gardening. Dahlias are my new obsession! :)

I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day! Home is my happy place, I love the area I live in. I like to read, quilt, cross stitch, knit, garden and I like being home with my fur babies, horse, goat, dogs and cats. They are my family too. I like to get out, but I love to come home. I have older quilting projects that I’ve collected too. And I’m thankful to have collected them. I’m not retired, I still work, and when we work it doesn’t leave a lot of time for those pleasurable things we Love to do. I live in the country too, and that has its busy times as well. It will all fall into place for you, just have patience. Thank you for a lovely video! ❤️💐🌸🪴

Hi Shanda! So good to see you again. Everything about home makes me want to stay here. I grew up on our family cattle ranch in very southern Idaho, three miles from the Nevada line in a small ranching community called Three Creek. We lived and worked everyday as a family, with home as the center of our universe. I have never taken a vacation with my family and I never missed them. We spent all our time together and had a beautiful place to grow up in. My Mom taught me to sew when I was five and I have sewn ever since. My Mom is a quilter who lives with us now and she is 91 years old and still quilts and does embroidery and other handwork every day. Home is where I always want to be. I garden, I quilt, I cross stitch, I embroider, do wool appliqué. I have everything I desire right here at home. You will get used to retirement. It’s like getting out of school - it takes a while to realize you don’t have homework to do, or tests to study for, your time is your own! I just started Where My Heart Blooms on my birthday, May 3rd, so we will sort of be stitching it together! Such a true sentiment. Home is where my heart blooms. Happy stitching til next time, my friend!! 🪡🧵🪡🌸🌼🐝🌞🐇🍄💕💕💕

Retirement is great! Home is where I love to be doing quilting, sewing, counted cross stitch, and now during the summer gardening. I only leave Home for appointments, and church. During the pandemic my life never changed because Home is where I want to be. I live in the pretty Southwest part of Wisconsin, but I know your mountain home would be the ideal home. Retirement has no schedules so I decide when I get up in the morning which room I will spend the day- the quilting room, the sewing room or outside in the garden. I hope your retirement will be great as well. Looking forward to seeing your new quilts and yes please add mountain pictures and pictures of your gardens.

I retired at 60 in 2007, so that makes me how old? and have I really not been lonely and bored? I'm a homebody and my loves are gardening, photography, reading, knitting, spinning, (you said not to mention cross stitch, so I won't), sewing, quilting, and I love just being out in nature. A few years ago I started raising chickens, and when they molted for the first time, I collected the feathers and learned fly tying! You're going to love waking without an alarm clock!

I retired 9 years ago. You will be shocked at how busy you will be. Some days I wonder how i worked and got anything else done. My heart is happy quilting, stitching, spinning yarn, knitting, making sourdough breads and cooking healthy foods. Enjoy your summer. I, too, am a Retired RN, Co-caregiver for 95 y.o. mother with my 5 yrs younger brother, also retired.
My handwork also includes X-stitch, crochet & quiltmaking.
I am enjoying your channel & actually have you scheduled in my calendar!
My mom knits too... she likes The Sock Lady on UA-cam... & has made 2 pair in purple shades!!!
Please give credit to the music pieces!
I, too have found that I do accomplish tasks when planned in my calendar... some are half days of X-stitch & half days cutting out quilts, or kitting up projects! Just petting the flosses & fabrics from my stash, is satisfying for me.
My most difficult "thing" is to not order new X-stitch charts & quilt patterns/kits. On a fixed income, it just is damaging to my checkbook register... grrr...
So tempting..., so, I take screenshots & can "keep the ideas alive." It helps!

Yes, my heart is in my home. I am retired for 2 years and I had a hard time to feel good, because I was not so "productive" anymore. I am not someone who really enjoys cleaning and did not feel satisfied. I thought a lot about my new life situation and also prayed to God to give me a new and fulfilling job. So he opened a door for me where I can sell handicrafts at market stalls and festivals. I also do voluntary work and am busy with knitting, embroidery, making cards in cross stitch, baking, reading. .... I love the variety. I wish you this harmony with the new lifestyle and the time you gained for your hobbies.

That feeling of not being “ productive” is a weird one. I worked full time and picked up extra hours as a nurse for > 40 years and was a single mom. I’ve been retired for a year and don’t want to go back to nursing but struggle with the “not productive” thing even though I piece/long arm, garden, cross stitch and knit 😊. I’m trying to tell myself we may need to redefine “ productive “ ? Don’t know 🤔

I retired last year but have gone back to work (part-time from home). I'm in South Carolina so gardening has been on the forefront of my mind for the last month at least. We've had a wonderful spring, the humidity has stayed away so far ..... it will come with a vengeance soon .... , the flower garden is looking just stunning and the vegetable garden is already planted. And on the days I can't go outside, I am quilting. I LOVE my home in the country. Life is good!
Ps. Pickering Farm was on my bucket list but unfortunately they closed within the past few weeks to retire.

A lovely visit as always Shanda. Your finishes and quilt plans are stellar. I too love to be home. I retired during Covid and after a bit of adjustment, have not looked back. I took up quilting, life long knitter and spinner and hope to start an entirely hand sewn quilt. We rescued a senior dog who had a rough life and she’s my company and sets the days agenda. Living on the SC coast, we can be found with toes in the sand and watching for dolphins in the Atlantic. Retirement is a process and I am blessed to have full and happy days.

Home...I was able to stay home most of the time when our children were growing up, very thankful for that, even though we certainly could have used the extra money...my husband and I had very different childhoods. He was the oldest of 8, his mother never worked outside then home, she loved being a mom. My mother had to work, my parents separated when I was 9. I was the oldest of 5 children. Even at that early age, it was teaching me the value of keeping a peaceful home where children were safe, cozy, feed and loved.
The world cannot impart that. Then in my late thirties when I became a Christian, I understood more deeply the role of a happy wife and mother.
I always loved to paint, sew, knit, crochet and quilt. My mother had no idea why, she said no one in her family was "artsy" at all. Her mother sewed, but only out of necessity during WWll.
Then I found cross stitch ❣️❣️ that was in 1993. My first project was a big sampler ❣️
I have approximately 20 finished framed pieces, but more given as gifts. Samplers are still my favorite to stitch. Still quilting at 70😊 I have a log cabin in the frame at this moment, it's for our bed, imagine that. All my children and siblings have quilts I've made just for them. Two grandchildren have them, special order, they picked out the block patterns and fabrics. Four more to go 😊so I'll need to live at least another 4 or 5 years 😄
Home, home is not so much things, but things made with all my heart, a place where all are welcome, a place where there's a pot of coffee or tea on, cookies cake or pie right out of the oven, the fragrance wafting through the whole house...I love home ♥️🙋 Robyn in northeastern Missouri.

Thanks for sharing!! Love your projects and FFO. I am 6 years away from retiring and counting the days. I have so many hobbies, but those hobbies are not what makes my heart stay home. We are home bodies, but we stay home because of a house full of rescues to whom we have given our home and our hearts. Before we even met, decades ago, my hubby and I both loved animals and stood up for them in more ways than one. When we met and began our lives together we new our house was not a home without animals. We built a home on a few acres in the country and soon began rescuing stray cats, given them food, shelter, vet care, etc. We call our house the Rescue House. For going on 3 decades we have opened our home to our furry children. We now have a bunch of senior kitties. We work hard so they can live a good life. May sound silly to some, but our Rescue House, is what brings us home. These bunch of fur babies, to whom we have dedicated our lives, fill our hearts with love. Hugs from NE Ohio.

My heart is happiest when I begin my morning with the Lord. I , too love being home. I love the way the light streams, the singing birds, my dog at my feet ( always ) as I look forward to raucous noise of my husband coming home and then the kids and grand babies coming over . First of all, great video! Interesting question. My heart is in my home. Not that I enjoy cleaning all that much. But I really treasure the mornings when I can get up when I want, have a cup or two of coffee and then decide what I am going to do for the day. Sometimes I just read, sometimes I quilt, stitch or knit. But most of all, I enjoy baking bread, Hamburger and Hot Dog buns, Sandwich bread, English muffins, and rustic breads. I will be interested in your sour dough starter recipe because I haven't had much success in that department.

You will love retirement, Shanda. You have so many things you love to do that you will never get bored. Retirement has been wonderful for me. I was a teacher for many years. Now I have time to take care of me--I walk, I eat better, I relax, I get enough sleep. That didn't happen as a teacher. I garden part of the year (zone 4) and cross stitch the rest of the year. I have time to read books, keep my grandchildren, see friends, purge and sort all the things, pray, bake, and just relax. There is no alarm clock going off at 5:15 anymore, but in the summer I wake with the early sun by choice. I loved teaching, but I love my life now even more. I think you will too. I am not a quilter, though am thinking about trying a simple one. I love the one on the back of your couch! And what is the pillow with the flags? Is that cross-stitched? Wishing you much joy on your retirement journey.

Please don't be anxious about retirement. It DOES take some adjustments But once you've relaxed some what you won't feel that need to do, do, do the minute your feet hit the floor. I was overwhelmed. I've been retired for 11 years and I STILL wonder what project my boss is going to pass on to me, etc. But usually by 9:00 a.m. I've cleared my head and I'm off with no yolk around my neck. The job had served me well but it was time to let it go. You're alot younger than me so you'll be lucky enough to enjoy many more years than I. Can't wait till you get to the Mountain home. While I love the cross stitch segments of your videos, I LOVE the quilting. You were the one who enabled me to do Anthology (slow progress). What keeps me hone is the peace and quiet both indoor and outdoor. Thanks for the video, Shanda and hugs from Canada!!

But now my schedule is get up at 7:00 o’clock m(because I decided that would be a lovely time, having gotten up at 5:15 each day) and then fix coffee and have that with my Bible devotions, then read for an hour or two. Then eat breakfast and finally get dressed and make my bed. That is mostly what is scheduled which I love doing. I also love making sour dough from wild yeast, and then baking boules. I also love to knit and plant flowers. And that is beside cross stitching. I have quilted and made more quilts than I can use. I enjoy sewing and love making Raggedy Ann dolls got my grandchildren. I make a lot of project bags for my daughter. Enjoy your time. 🥰 📚 knitting 🧶 flowers 🌺 also 🍳.

Red buffalo plaid is also my favorite plaid. I have a giant Jane Marie red buffalo plaid duffle bag that holds my current knitting projects. Makes for easy grab and go with a variety of projects to work on. Congrats on your retirement. I retired as a paralegal almost 3 years ago, and I haven’t looked back. FYI, I don’t know if I accomplish anymore stitching than I did when I worked, however. 😂 It took me at least a year before I found my new normal because right after I retired, Covid hit, but I was ok being home because it allowed me me make some short and long-term intentions. At first I was a little overwhelmed, but gradually I found that rhythm and realized it was ok not to rise at 5:30 in the morning; it was ok if my intentions for the day got derailed. This is what you’ve worked for all of your life and now it’s time embrace this new chapter. Just take a deep breath in, and sigh it out.

I moved at the same time to the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains in SW VA, so I missed all my social network and children. One year out and I’m living my best life! Oh Shanda! Retirement is….. weird and awesome. I retired about a year ago, after 45 years of nursing. The last 15 months were front line Covid. I retired 3 months sooner than I had planned on but things at work just got too ugly. I have a pension and retirement account but still took a big drop in income. And I was used to working two jobs and I raised two kids on my own. So to all of a sudden not have a schedule for the first in over 40 years took some getting used to. And the days “fly by”. I think it’s because you are at home and can get distracted by so much. But it’s also heavenly😊.
I went through my sewing space and specifically my UFO’s and have been working on those piles! I became much more active in my guild, and entered quilts into two shows ( one was juried and I was thrilled to be accepted). In addition to cross stitching, I also knit, spin, piece and long arm, and garden and do typical homeowner projects- we are going to redo the backyard deck later this summer. I LOVE being at home! The lockdown was not much of a problem for me. I also am baking more, and at night am re reading some novels.
The biggest surprise for me about retirement is that there is a DEFINITE adjustment. At least for me I had to re order my thinking about day to day things. It took me a good six months to adjust. But yeah- I only go out when I absolutely have to. Just be patient with yourself.
Please don’t get rid of your intro music! ITS AWESOME. I welcome sour dough baking adventures and any thing else you want to throw in there. I garden also - for the third year in a row I started a bunch of veggies from seeds.
Til next month ❤️Ann from Oregon

I am so impressed by your plans and organization, I think that you will enjoy your retirement. When I retired, briefly, I was surprised by my loss of identity. I had never thought of myself as a career person, or really anything other than a wife and mother. When I stopped working, I was surprised that I lost my professional identity and missed it! You have put so much thought and planning into your future! Enjoy!

What a fond memory you stirred for me today - Country Threads was the very first quilt shop I ever went to, my husband took me there, I'm not sure if we were even married yet at the time. I still remember I bought the original Thimbleberrries book and a thread holder for hand quilting. I still have both items and they have gotten a lot of use. Were you ever able to go there in person? It was a great place on a cute little farm. Home is my happy place, I enjoy any craft and love to do canning, baking, etc. Congratulations on your upcoming retirement.

Thank you Shanda for a lovely flosstube. I do so enjoy your videos. What makes my heart rejoice at home? Being with my daughter and her husbnd. I'm now 92 (and a half!) and am now making my home with them. It is rewarding to see how my daughter has turned out. I've been slessed with, and by, my three children as they have reached majority. They are the major blessings in my life. I aoso enjoy reading, stitching and now arranging stacks of photos into pass=downable albums.
Could you help me? I noticed the pillow on yo9ur right. It is, I believe a woven one. My Mother-in-Law, may her memory be for a blessing, used to weave. She made me two bedspreads for son's twin beds when they were little and a full size one in soft green for me. In one of my many moves, the soft green was lost. I would like to buy some more of that tyope of woven "stuff", spreads or pillows. I don't know what they are called and, so far, have no luck finding any on Google. Can you give me any hints to help me find some woven things? I'd appreciate it.
And, you will enjoy your retirement. I know I did -- and still am. Best always, Dulcie

Shanda! So love your videos and can sit and drool over your background. And glad you like the bling but it reminded me of you and glad you enjoyed the charts. Love your finishes and all the quilt ideas. I have the fabric for 2 now, can’t cut a straight line so should be interesting… for my granddaughter as a topper for her bed as shes in bunk so didn’t want too long and the top is a panel so just 2 sides and binding. The other is just simple quilt for my 3 yr old grandson as I couldn’t resist the dinosaur material. Lol. Love the idea of homemaking etc love all kinds of things home making. Have a great month till we see you again!

Retirement is amazing...I get up when I wake up (no alarms) go to bed when I want. I love to cross stitch, knit, crochet, quilt, read and garden. The problem is there just isn't enough hours in the day to do it all. I love watching your video's, your projects are gorgeous. You are going to be so busy getting those 5 quilts cut and put together. I am looking forward to seeing your progress. Take care!!!

Congratulations Shanda, I too am retiring on June 15th. I am a teacher, and that is the day I turn in my final grades and walk away. I actually retired once before, in 2017. I had lots to do- I finished a graduate certificate, moved to my dream home in another state. I was very happy and busy. Then the pandemic hit, and I was home. A lot. And so, when an interesting job was offered to me, I took it. Teaching during the pandemic was no joke. It took skill and fortitude. I’m glad I was able to be there for the students, but now, it’s my time, finally. I will stitch, knit, spin, learn quilting and wool appliqué, cook, bake, travel, garden, read…all the things you love to do. I will watch your retirement journey with interest, as I’m sure it will parallel mine. Just do whatever you want, and have fun above all.

This was so enjoyable. Love to see what is coming from your home that you make from your home. Home is comfort and bring in a flower from the bed to place on the desk and keep it beautiful every day until the blossom fades. The joy of a little outside to wander past and pause and know that it came from my yard is a blessing. Home is peace in abundance. Music in the background, and happiness in its space. You will find your rhythm and it will be the joy of your days. Happy retirement! Loved seeing your happy mail. I think the 'Red Rock" was my favorite.

Hi Shanda, I really enjoy the quilting part of your videos. I love both cross stitch and quilting and struggle to balance working on my projects for both. I just want to let you know that Pickering Farm in Richmond NH is no longer in business as of this month. It was such a special shop and I will truly miss going there. The owners also are retiring and will be missed by so many here in New England. I am so looking forward to your next video and I hope the weeks until June 15 go by quickly for you. I am enjoying my retirement and still the days are not long enough for all I enjoy doing. Happy Mother's Day, also.

So pleased to see your video pop up! Love your finish with the sheep. Love the name of your father’s mother’s grandmother. I can imagine she was a welcome long awaited daughter and thus the name…Thankful.
You have some wonderful quilts in your future…I think my favourite is the elongated churn dash. My favourite block whether it is square, or elongated, tiny or huge. Looking forward to your additional content…hope it comes with recipes!
As far as a what makes me love being home…I love the quiet times. I love the randomness of my days. I love that if I get a notion to make supper to bring to son and daughter-in-law’s busy family I can do it…or make a batch of cupcakes or brownies to bring to a neighbour. I have done such fun things to surprise friends and neighbours, just because… I love that I can pack a picnic and go for a walk or a drive and wander. I love having the time to do my favourite things and still have time to do the mundane needful things. I love that I can drop things and go have lunch with a friend, or take walks together. I often have said I got way more done when I was working because I had to be more disciplined and make good use of my days off . The pressure is lifted now. Enjoy each day..they are precious and tomorrow is not a guarantee so enjoy the day you have been given.
Happy Mother’s Day and happy stitching.

Sorry just getting to your videos. I was in a car accident last month and had to put some things on hold. I'm getting better going to physical therapy so no worries! My son just graduated from college and I remember after finals were over having that same feeling of what do I do now. I told him that it's going to take a minute for that I've got to get this done feeling to subside but it will and that you need to look forward to all the next things as they come up. I've been disabled from a past accident for quite some time so I've learned to live in the moment and do what I feel up to doing each day. There are things on my list but I don't let it bug me and feel grateful every day for God's blessings in my life!

I’m a nester by heart so besides my family my home is not only my passion but where I feel peace and puttering around is my joy. Summer is almost here and because we are on a lake our kids are here most weekends which fills me with joy and I can treat them to good food around our table which is my love language. I have been retired now for more than 10 years and I love the fact that I am free to do what I want, when I want, aside from the daily chores and meals. My husband is also retired and we each have our own hobbies. He does woodturning and other wood things and he is also learning to forge. I recently started stitching after a 30 year hiatus and I am a quilter, knitter, enjoy reading and gardening. It is also great to sit on the porch and watch and listen to the birds. There is nothing like retirement.
