West of England Bandsmen's Festival, Bugle, 18/6/16 Morning March

- The annual contest at Bugle, Cornwall where traffic gives way to bands on the A391 as some of the day's competitors march down Fore Street on their way to Mollinis Park for the contest proper. A great atmosphere as usual in fine weather.
Bands in order are:
Indian Queens, Lostwithiel Town/Juniors, Okehampton Excelsior, Bodmin Town, St. Dennis Youth, Camborne Junior Training, Tadley Concert, Roche, Shrewton Silver, Fulham, St. Austell Town/Youth and St. Dennis.
Wonderful to watch here from Australia. So good to see so many young people. Reminds me of congress. Lovely memories.
I have to say it's a very special day down in Cornwall, such a great atmosphere all day from the first band to march in the morning to the winner's performance outside the pub in the centre of the village at the end of the day. So glad you enjoyed it Patricia, especially as you're half way around the world!!!
Oh so lovely, listened to marching bands as a child but sadly we don't see them enough anymore.
Personally prefer fifes and drums, but I respect people and bands who still march, drumming is top notch.
Thats the first time I've seen a DANCING Bass drummer.

omg wonderful i used to play in petworth town band in petworth sussex and i admit i used to love marching like this while playing the cornet.
Glad it brought back good memories! I don't think everyone in banding shares your enthusiasm for marching, but there's a good many of us who do!!
The bands are good I thought the marching pace seems slower than usual, love the dogs watching

I seem to get down there every three years Dave and am always amazed at the atmosphere and I don't think you'd ever get anything like it happening anywhere else - truly unique!

Always nice to see the youngsters getting involved like that and hopefully picking up some 'life lessons' on the way!!

Band 1....what happened to 120bpm?
I prefer a slower tempo personally however they were paying tribute to a recently deceased longstanding member of the band (note the picture being carried at the front) and respected member of the Cornish banding community.
Fair enough.....so-called March Tempo isn't really necessary outside of 'Quickstep' marching contests, slower tempos are appreciated especially by bass drummers! ;) [PS - love Cornwall!]
I don't whether or not 120 is the "official" tempo, when one considers some Military Bands we hear. Taking it is slightly slower means you can get all these semiquavers in more tidily. Blue from NZ

@@hjames4819 So I understand. Banding doesn't seem to have as many 'bandsmen' these days - times have changed, sadly!
St Dennis Band always seem to play the same march. Can anyone name the march and is there any significance as to why they do.
The march is March of the Heralds by Horatio Nichols. Don't know of a reason other than, probably, tradition.

Great video. A pleasure to see so many young musicians in some of the bands. Question: Why do the basses in many English community bands appear in the first or second row?
Can't really answer the question other than say it's traditional. Going to Whit Friday every year, there are always a few bands from Mainland Europe that come over and it's always strange to see Basses in a line one behind another or the Trombones on the back rank - why do they do that? All in the 'mists of time' I suspect! Glad you enjoyed the vid.!
Typicaly trombones are at the front being the only instrument with no valves, gives them plenty of room to change slide position. The alternative being bases at the front the trombones are used as what we call kick shifters as basses arent always the fastes walkers. In terms of eurooean bands with basses down the side and trombones at thw rear im under the umpretion its to help with sound distribution especialy when bass solos come round in a march
Speak to any bass player, and they will be modest and tell you they are the most important players in a band, so must be featured. Quite simple really, ad I am not, nor wish to be, a bass player.
@@blueycaldwell4273 I must admit I was a bass player and always preferred to be on the front rank - think four basses on a front rank looks smart, but then I'm biased!!!
@@herbiestrainsbands346 With the size of some bass players I have seen over the years, they are put up front to protect and hide the lesser players on those cornets.
