Bugle Contest '24 - Part Test Piece performances - Pendennis Brass, St. Austell & St. Dennis.
So some snippets of the test pieces performed at the West of England Bandsmen's Festival at Bugle 15/6/24.
Pendennis Brass under Harry Wier (not St Stythians as I noted in the title - sorry!) performed Three Howarth Impressions by Gordon Langford, a seldom heard work sadly, but a part of the super first mvt, full of atmosphere and drama and then the jaunty final mvt depicting the Worth Valley Railway.
St. Austell under Adam Glynn gave a surefooted performance of Gregson's Variations on Laudate Dominum to win the section and we the that final romp home.
St. Dennis under Darren Hawken round things off with the finale from Philip Wilby's Paganini Variations.
Afraid there is some wind noise, it was that sort of day as it often is at Bugle!!!

I started in a local town band in the early 70's and yes, we did about five or six local carnivals and perhaps it was a strange discipline for someone in their early teens, but always enjoyed it. There's also no doubt that whilst standards are higher generally in bands these days, there is a shortage of players with fewer youngsters getting involved and I think the pandemic took it's toll too!!

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but boy does the illuminati write excellent marches. I always wondered what the inspiration for this march was. Interestingly it's Knight singular. Wondered whether George Allan, was himself a member of the Masons....it would have been much more common in those days. Probably not that important but what a stirring march indeed and boy has it stood the test of time. Trouble is the cream ones did not last at all well. They hardened, cracked and leaked whereas the black remained subtle and doing their job. So whilst they are not authentic, in terms of the cost and irpractiability of periodic replacements in preservation, I can understand the decision. The bus does look exceptionally smart, I would have loved to own an FLF… I applied to acquire ECOC FLF450 … HPW450D back in the early 1980s but a move of job and lack of funds prevented it. Would have been a good purchase as it had some engine and gearbox work done late in life. Ahh well, dream on😊

Greetings from New York. What a great event. you have. Great to see so many young musicians and the religious aspect. I hope it lasts for any years to come.

Always a great day, whatever the weather, and even though I'm not a local it's always a highlight of my year and has been for almost 40 years! So glad you enjoyed it and really good to hear from someone a little further away!
