    I'm dealing with a nearly identical break. The main board snapped but it also took the board that had the springs attached with it. I think I can just use extra screws to mend it but I won't know until I get in there. I wish they didn't use that particle board for those components but it is what it is. I don't look forward to re-attaching springs, lol. Thanks for the vid!
    EDIT: I fixed mine but thankfully I didn't have to mess with the springs. I was able to use clamps and wood to tension the springs and situate everything well enough to put about 30 screws through two new pieces of wood, one in front, and one in back. It's WAY stronger than it was when we bought it. 😂

    Those damn furniture makers using flimsy wafer board for structural components even on expensive furniture. I had to repair two expensive leather recliners due to same issue. Then they hide it all behind dust covers so you cant tell how cheaply it was constructed. I took the extra step to use wood glue. Nice repair.

    Thank you Joe. I am in the UK where all couches are very cheaply built (Chinese imports) and repairing my couch and watching many repair videos to psyche myself to do it. It's scary trying something new when you have no idea what you're in for. The way I see it, if you cant fix it it's junk anyway and you will probably get rid of it. So why not explore and see if it is fixable. If it is, then you got a bonus. Before this video I have never taken apart a couch! You're welcome! I'm glad it helped!

    • @DrDanielHoward
      @DrDanielHoward Рік тому

      @@Doityourselfwithjoe Yes. The problem is that the leather appears to be glued in places. It does not use strings but a series of elastic straps that originate in a weak piece of MDF wood that has bent. Changing that has been a challege, four hours into the job I have more or less succeeded in taking out the piece of wood and trying to figure out how to replace it and how to attach the straps to it. The leather is scratched and discoloured in places. I kept much of the leather of its twin sofa that I threw away a few years back but unsure how to replace the leather here and there without making it look patched up. Any ideas?

    • @DrDanielHoward
      @DrDanielHoward Рік тому +1

      @@m42037 I did repair mine using new stronger wood I had cut in a B&Q (in UK) a stapler and specialist hooks and tensioners for the elastic bands (and new bands). There was a furniture repair shop near my house - I was lucky, and they sold me some of these materials. However, the repair was not really worth it. Best thing is to save yourself the trouble and buy a new sofa. Make sure to look under it to ensure the wood is solid before you agree to buy. There are smaller specialist shops not catering to the furniture chains or malls that make better furniture for the same or lesser price.

    Thanks. I'm waiting for a couple of springs to be delivered to have a go at fixing mine. It's actually a much simpler job in my case, just one spring that broke on mine which needs replacing but I can use the other for spares if another one goes. my couch is actually still usable in the meantime.
    I can still sit on it, it just feel a bit weaker than it was before that spring broke. One question I would like to ask though, aside from aesthetics, do the bottom piece fabric dust covers serve any real practical function? I mean, would it matter if you just left it open without replacing the cover after completing the job?

    • @Doityourselfwithjoe
      @Doityourselfwithjoe  4 роки тому +2

      It doesn't matter whether or not you install the bottom cover. If you have extra springs you may want to install all the new ones. If you just install one spring it may set differently than the old ones. The new one being stiffer may sit higher than the old ones. I hope i am explaining this correctly. Also , lets say for example you have 6 springs and you only have 2 replace ments, i would install the new ones in the middle so the cushion doesn't sit lopsided. If you install them in the middle the cushion will appear domed instead of higher on one side. Hope this helps!

    I have a couch with a broken springs. The fix looks fairly simple but how do I determine what size springs to buy? Do they come in certain lengths and/or widths? I have watched several videos and it looks like some have the waves closer together also.

    • @Doityourselfwithjoe
      @Doityourselfwithjoe  3 роки тому +1

      I'm there are different widths and lengths. Which ever ones you do buy make sure to change all of them in the section. Example, if there are 4 of them in the chair you need to change all four. because the new one will sit higher then the old ones.

    Helllo Jeo, one of the side(armrest) of my couch is not attched to the sitting area. The side consistd of two screws which attched it to the sitting area. But during dismentelling process, i lost one of the screw inside the hollow part of the couch-side(armrest). I dont know how can i take it out. There is only small hole which fits the screw. At the moment, (armrest) is only fixed with one screw, which make it less robust...or durable...:(
    Any idea??

    • @Doityourselfwithjoe
      @Doityourselfwithjoe  Рік тому

      I'm not sure what your armrest looks like. What I think you have, on the outside part of the armrest the material will look like a folded seam. If you look up upholstery tack strip, I think you will know what I am talking about. If you pry apart that seem you will be able to get to the screw. Then you can reinstall the tack strip. Let me know if that helps. If you still don't understand what I am talking about then search UA-cam for how to use upholstery strips. When they built the couch they installed the arm first then attached the fabric with a tack strip. Let me know how it goes!
