I own one for nearly 3 months. Drove it like 2200 miles already and can
provide first-hand impressions :) I have the 1.2 petrol, 90hp, manual
gearbox. It's sold without the "mild hybrid" in my country, which I
preferred. The positives: 1) The price of buying and using. Car is cheap
to buy and by far the best equipped for the price in it's class. Here
(Bulgaria) it comes with Nav system, rear-view cam, adaptive cruise
control and auto A/C at 13 500 euro. Only Skoda Rapid hatch offered
something close in equipment/price (it was still like 10-12% more
expensive), all other brands wanted way more money for these gadgets ;)
It's also cheap to run. The tax is small (guess it varies in other
countries). Driving at 80-90 km/h on 2-lane roads gave me actual fuel
consumption of 4,0l/100km, which I find very impressive. On the highway,
driving 120-130km/h with A/C on full time, the consumption was
5,1l/100km, still very good. In the city it burns 6,0l/100km, which i
find reasonable. 2) Legroom. It has very good legroom for the back seat
passengers. I'm nearly 6'2" (187 cm to be precise) and my brother, who
is 6'0" can sit behind me without touching the back of driver's seat. I
went in several showrooms and tested the space in other models in
Segment B (the Supermini) like Skoda Fabia, Ford B-max, Hyundai i20
Active and even Mazda CX-3. All had less legroom at the back. I find
this very impressive and a strong selling point for the Baleno. (A note
here - the headroom at the back is OK, but not as impressive). 3) The
size. The car is very compact at a notch under 4m. I find this an
advantage in the city, especially when parking. (But it really NEEDS
it's rear-view camera, because the back-window is so high and so tight,
one can see nothing through it.) 4) Ease of use. The controls are
logical and simple enough, the touch-screen is not laggy (I have the
7-inch one), the adjustments of driving position and things like
brightness of the dash are more than adequate. I drove it at night
numerous times and find the headlights to be good. In all - I had no
trouble adapting from my previous car to the Baleno. The negatives so
far: 1) Used materials. The plastic in the cabin is hard and scratchy. I
already have some permanent scratches at the inside lower portion of
the driver's door from my shoes. And the other material I do not like is
the thin metal the whole exterior is made of. Alas - a weakness of most
modern cars in my opinion 2) Noise in the cabin at high speeds. The
Baleno is very light (about 950kg) and I believe some of the weight was
saved on noise insulation. It is not unbearable, don't get me wrong. But
I find 130-135 km/h to be the limit in terms of comfort, a subjective,
individual assessment, of course. (A note here - a lot of the noise is
made by the tires it comes with, a budget model by Bridgestone. So this
part is "improvable" by the user). As a conclusion - sorry for the long
post :) I tried to be objective. So far I do not regret choosing the
Baleno. Hope all this is helpful to anyone :)
+Momchil Minkov thanks for the insight!!
Momchil Minkov
Thanks! Very helpful.
Thanks you
Thanks for the review. It's a good car. I just wished they had spent a little more on the insulation. Then it would be a great car.
The Baleno is a no nonsense car. It shines with awesome frugality, reliability and very easy serviceability. Average fuel consumption over 4000 km so far was 4.9L/100 km. Awesome car. I highly recommend it!
A good report, Autogefuehl! As a UK-based motoring journalist, who also created a video (the launch programme) for Suzuki, which you can find on You Tube, I became so enamoured by the car that I bought one! I can tolerate the plain appearance. I can live with the low-rent plastic trim (at least it wipes clean easily!). However, I love its 60mpg fuel economy and incredible speed potential...135mph (indicated) and 0-60mph in around 8.8 seconds....despite the very conservative claims by Suzuki. The engine is a gem and it works very well in the new S-Cross model too. In 1.4-litre form, in the Vitara S, it is more like a rally car for the road!
thanks for the feedback !
Good to know, thanks for the input, Suzuki makes no nonsens cars to take you reliable from A to B. They have good engines that will last, bad points is the plastic trim inside, the steel gets a dent in it just by watching it.Otherwise very reliable, I own a 1,8 Baleno GTX estate it will be 21 years in a week tim, I own it 14 years now and I am not going to sell it. I have a very relaible roomy car. Yes he drinks petrol like a Polak does beer or wodka but if that's the only complaint I am satisfied.
Best review of the baleno I have watched. I’ve owned one of these for just over a year now and I think it’s a great car for the price.
Thanks a lot, feel free to spread the word
hi hows it going? the car still doing good? 👍
I purchased a suzuki alto in 2009 and it has 150 000km on the clock. For some reason that i cannot explain i am severely attached to this little car and i just do not want to give it away. It has never disappointed me, yet i never seem to take good care of it. What a small machine.
Bought myself a Suzuki Alto in 2011, drove about 47.000km in 4,5 years and changed it to a Kia Rio in March this year. Alto was just too small car for me.
I think Rio is about the same size as this new Baleno.
Baleno isn't available here in Finland at least yet but even if it was, I'm happy with the Rio and plan to keep it for many years.
Having said that, the Baleno seems to be an ok everyday car for people that need just a basic, compact car to drive from A to B.
Oh and I'm just 176,5cm tall and haven't had any issues even with small cars like the Alto :D
Theocy1986 same here. The alto is great. Super light so pretty quick around town. Fun. Too small for me too. Never hand a single issue and I only did the first service.
Dear Parishrut, you are definitely right. I feel the same way.
I think by alto he means A-star...in uk Astar is alto
Likewise. A great wee car was my Alto and I an hoping to re-create the experience with a new Baleno turbo tomorrow,
Phenomenally awesome daily driver! I love my one!!! I never used more than 6L/100km and my best was 3.5L driving long distance.
Yes, only Full HD, Full screen and full length. Great review again
+alpinaB12coupe 👌🎬
What a good review..Going to test drive one soon.Seems very good value..
Great review. We're going to see one tomorrow hopefully for our next family car ❤️
Simple, cheap and it will be reliable over time. As ever, nice in-depth look, Thomas.
Excellent review. Best I have found. Thank you.
Thanks feel free to recommend!
An other excellent review as always! Thank you and keep up the great work!
Very good review
Thank you Thomas, for your attention, you emphasise everything in details. Although the design is not good, i like its engine and other properties as infotainment systems
thanks bro
Thanks Thomas! I kinda like this car. It may not be anything special, but the engine does sound nice and it does have a lot of options (like the navigation, safety systems etc.) that seem to work quite well. All together that makes for a fairly nice and comfortable car for a very decent price. And Suzuki usually builds good quality cars, as far as I know.
You may not make anyone jealous when you buy one, but you may quietly enjoy it for years! :-)

That was a super review and because of you i was for Test Drive with the 1.0 boostjeet engine.Really cool little Thing for Family that have Others Plans in life and a car ist Just to take us From A to B.
Appreciated!
Thorough review of a fairly plain car. But reasonable for the price. Hope you recover from your cold Thomas.

😂😂
I'm glad he took it on the Autobahn.. often times these small cars are great around town, but crap on the highway. This Baleno looks like it can hold its own on the highway, which is great here in Australia, where we have mostly single-lane roads and must overtake a truck quickly if we don't want to die. Although it looks like it rides pretty rough at 100kmh. Oh BTW, the Suzuki official figures for the turbo state 0-100 in 11 sec, but every review I've seen they get 0-100 under 10 sec, and that's even for the auto.
I had a Suzuki Swift 1.6 GLX from 1994 till 2009, I drove 2200 km without stopping and it was fine. I drove it through Germany and I didn't have to be ashamed of it, did very well on the German highway. Now I own a Baleno from the older generations an estate 1.8GTX it's 21 years old and still I use it. When I bought it it was 7 years old.
Very good review, car is nice to.
thanks - tune in for more of our reviews!
You have subs. from me, regards.
Pump it up y'all 🤣 I love Thomas! So funny 🤣👍
👍😎
Suzuki make good, honest, unpretentious and reliable cars that will stand the test of time.
The rapid centering of the steering wheel after you let it go is caused by the high caster angle of the suspension. In most sport/racing cars very high caster angles are used because it also helps with increasing camber in the corner (the contact of the tyre with the road when turned).
+Stanislav .Bratushkov interesting, didtn realize it in any sportscar yet
All the BMW M cars for example have different bushings to increase caster.
it is related to caster and king pin inclination
This guy doesn't go normally in a car. He stretches and goes 😂
Thomas will you maybe be reviewing new Renault Grand Scenic anytime soon?
I want to buy a car which have good space and lots of features and it should look good both in exterior and interior and have a good handling too, can u please suggest which I should go for.
Budget around 13000 to 14500 euro
how can i buy these alloy wheels ??
i am from india.
is there any online site?
I think the EU should force car manufacturers to advertise what they got in the Euro Ncap tests. I think in this day & age its ridiculous not to get the maximum 5. This car & the FIAT Tipo both only got 3 stars in basic form. Even more scarier is that both were given 4 stars if you payd more money & got a higher spec version. I think crash test results are important & car companies shouldn't be able to do poorly & get away with it.
You are a dick, why?Because the safety doesn't depend on all the software and gadgets but on the donkey that sits behind the wheel. Remember the British Diana? She died in a Mercedes 600 or 500.Nothing will save you against a truck, concrete or a head on collision.
Hi, Thomas. Amazing review as usual. Does Suzuki Baleno share the same body with Opel Astra? You know Suzuki rebadged Daewoo models and sold as Suzuki in the USA.
Dell Chrombox No, Baleno is a unique model not shared with any other car
Dell Chrombox
Rather impossible! I know that both Suzuki and Daewoo are making cars for General Motors because GM has stakes in both of them. However, for Suzuki to rebadge Daewoo as their own cars seems to be rather impossible. It might be GM to rebadge Daewoo's car. Chevy Flash is made by Daewoo for better labor cost and capacity. Not a bad car.
This is my kind of review.
love to hear that, join us for more!
Great review, as always Thomas! Really like these reviews of a "normal" affordable, everyday car. Can you please do a full-review of the new Hyundai i20?
Appreciated! Lets see what we can do
What is the location where this video was shot?
great review, nice and thorough. I own a suzuki swift and I just ordered a baleno. I like that I will get a bigger boot and new safety features. When I did the testdrive it felt like I was driving my swift whitch i very much like to drive :o) I know a lot of people think it looks boring but i like that it looks conservative and that it comes at an affordable price
thanks Marianne and enjoy :)
Its a pity this car didnt take off in Europe(people either bought a Swift or a Fieista because the turbo goes BrRRRR)its a good small car thats easy to drive and gets great fuel economy and the new one is even more feature packed with sharper styling. On the used market though these are doing pretty well.
i like the car
What is the color of the tested car? Silver metal ?
I suspect with having a turbo the compression ratio will be lower and so less blow back past the pistons will if at least not pushed too hard in the higher rev range might use less oil consumption unlike a lot of these modern day engines are reputed to do unless frequent oil changes are carried out. Anyone??
Greetings from Italy! Here we had problems with suspensions. Suzuki has only replaced some components of the rear suspension system, regardless of the car stet-up and production year. The result is that now to suffer is the front suspension system. Do you have any experience to share?
I would change the struts get some of Sachs and other coils and you will get a better car.
Suzuki's 6 AT is 100% much better than VW, Audi 1.0 DSG or Ford 1.0 powershift series, at least you won't stuck on road and spend a lot of money and time to get repair. fuel efficiency and economical reliablity is everything.
William Wen
"Dual clutch" was a crazy and wrong idea from the very beginning of Bugatti Veyron leading to disaster later. However, VW never admit the wrongful idea and keep installing "Dual Clutch" on all new cars from VW Group to create a tech fashion, thus to cover all breakdowns up.
Would have loved station version of this car like they do with the Renault Clio.
Get well soon my friend.
+siphonsnob 👍🚑
Sad that Europe did not accept it just because it is made in India.. But actually it is a value for money car..
I know it's a long time ago you made this video but do you remember how the suspension felt? A smooth ride is very important to me, I don't want to feel all the bumps. I notice a view from one of your cameras (from your left rear) was vibrating a lot, but that might have just been the camera connection. I didn't notice that vibration from the other camera.
sorry too long ago !
@@autogefuehl OK, I'll take it that the ride wasn't noticeably bad otherwise you would have mentioned it. Thanks
Thomas, I like your reviews. I am not getting tired to say that again and again!
I like the simple and good infotainment system of the car. I don' t like the middle console and the blue instruments designwise.
The styling of the exterieur reminds me also a little bit of the German word "Japan Barock".
With my old Peugeot 106 I had the same problem looking out the front window like you ;-)
What is really great is the light weight of the car!
What I really don't understand, Thomas, is: Why are you several times in the video saying this car was between the small car and the compact segment? With 4 meters in length it is exactly as long as a Citroën C3 or a Honda Jazz, 2 centimeters (one finger!) shorter than a VW Polo or a Peugeot 208 and 6 centimeters shorter than a Mazda 2. Aren't they all cars of the small car segment?
Japan Barock - classic =)
Not shorter than a Polo, some cm longer. As for the space that is being offered, it sits somewhere between small and compact segment
Autogefühl Of course, the Polo and the 208 are about 3.98 meters in length. That' s what I wanted to say. So the Baleno has about the same length as a Polo, but the much better package. From the space inside somewhere between a Golf and a Polo? That for me was a little bit confusing in the video, because you said 4 meters in length and at the same time "somewhere between small and compact car".
Autogefühl Thomas, you explained the function of the cruise control. That's an import feature for me. Great! Interesting that the cruise control is not deactivated when you shift. What I like about Autogefühl is that you really care about the details. The comments of the viewers usually are also with much more class than on other car channels.
Continue the good work :-)
Autogefühl Ausnahmen bestätigen die Regel. "It's so ugly" bekommt 5 Daumen nach oben. ???
What is its Kerb weight & Gross weight.....
How is its built quality.
Is safety related to weight and outer build of the car ????
Please advice...
What are you afraid of?Dying you will for sure, even in a more expensive car with all the gadgets, hit a tree, truck, bus concrete and you won't survive.
@@Pfirtzer Thanks for replying me so early 😉
Steering wheel jump back - is Suzuki tradition, my 2002 Swift without power steering have the same effect, after a wile this auto correction can be very good on open roads and in the city to, if you want to drive with more sport style.
+TestAutomobila interesting!
Our 64 plate alto steering doesn't really return back to centre I've heard this about the celerio as well
@@stevenstork2627 There is a solution for it, many Suzuki's are plagued with this trait.
in indonesia only one type baleno with 1500 cc naturaly aspirated engine with exterior design like sport edition in india.
Lol. Thanks for another nice review. I think this car is ment for asian market. That is because they are mostly short people there and not designed for EU where average size is much taller.
yeah indeed
taller and fatter.
Thie standard(non-booster) sells like hotcakes back in India!
When the Baleno first came out I thought 'I want one!'. I liked the looks, the small turbo engine & the low fuel consumption figures. I was truly ready to open my wallet! Then I took one for a test drive when I took my wife's Suzuki Celerio in for its service. Hmmm...after the Celerio, the cockpit felt cramped, like there's not enough space around you. Also, is it me but is the Celerio actually quieter? Lastly (and this was the final nail in the coffin) the steering wheel is IMO too off set. I had this in my old Corolla and you sort of have to shuffle your bum over and sit (uncomfortably) on the edge of the seat to get properly behind the wheel.
So I changed my mind and bought myself a Celerio instead and I think I made the right decision...
thanks for the feedback !
+Peter Growcott - interesting observations.
Another low segment car after the Mitsubishi Space Star, so I am happy! I am a huge low segment car fan. Why? Because the manufacturers are really pressed in that segment to give most for your Euro. I think building a good low segment car is far more challenging than a good expensive car. By the way, the Space Star is almost 150 kg lighter than the Baleno and not much smaller.... It also uses less fuel and is not prone to carbon build up in the inlet valves. So if I would chose the Baleno, I would go for the 1.2 normally aspirated engine.
thanks for the feedback, interesting!
I don't think that's th reason. The current British brands simply didn't make cars like that. Rover in the past did and some others did as well. However, they simply didn't survive (and actually, all the others were acquired by others as well).
***** Did the others survive? Or did were they just interesting for other players that want to have a stake in the concerning segment and was that the reason they were taken over?
Further, it's also a matter of competition. How many Japanese cars do we see in Europe? Not that many. Why? Because they European competitors are stronger. Same happened with Rover.
Rover was a general/mainstream brand. They did nothing others couldn't make as well. But Rovers were certainly no bad cars. Especially when they were based on Honda's. It's not that they can't make these cars. Opel makes these cars as well, and they are not known as well made cars. The VAG cars all have problems with the downsized engines. Yet Opel as well as VAG are selling really well.

Build quality of maruti suzuki in india is considered the worst and still 50% market of india is occupied by maruti.
Built quality has to do with the market, it's 1st the mentality of the workers read Indian people, 2nd Japanese are to blame they should get Japanese ethics into Indian workers, which is impossible. You want a cheap car?So the product gets worse, pay more, you get better cars.
Which passenger car in India provide better built under the budget of 12000 euro in India?! I know you will name Tata, but Tata has the worst engine, worst customer service, terrible cabin noise... So Suzuki in India is just doing fine..
Why would anyone buy a Swift when you can get a Baleno ?

Budget car, but good car...it seems
Its not really budget car top trim like in this car can cost in EU around 15-16.000 euros, for that money you can buy very nice Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost with the same level of equipment and to be Made in Germany.

To be honest. I just hate the design. What seems to be larger maybe smaller in the rest of the world. Z.b a larger Honda crv in Deutschland is mid in US. The same goes with Affordability. What do you think? Mit freundlichen Grüßen Sree

This is a 'good car' if you mean luxurious,Suzuki are not aiming at that segment of the market.

Suzuki cars are just as good as Honda cars. Suzuki cars are not so high profile as Honda cars. A little bit conservative, however, the reliability is superb. If you are looking for a reliable companion not so shiny, then Suzuki is a good choice.
You are very handsome to look at so I forgot about looking at the Baleno

Suzuki got it's butt kicked by Toyota, Honda and Mazda is North America. (so much so they closed shop and don't sell here anymore, unless you want 2 wheels.)

Very nice and complete review that shows what you do not always see!
Suzuki has been deliberately pessimistic about the performance of this Baleno 1.0L to be able to export this car all over the world and to be in conformity with the legislation in effect in each country. This car looks ugly.
Designed in Italy, better to be designed in Japan. For me only top level of equipment looks good with chrome details, simple-basic versions with black plastic looks really, like you say ugly.
Both suzuki and subaru they have the worst interior
