  • We're back in the Tested studio after a year in lockdown to assemble and set up a new CNC machine for our workshop: Inventables' new X-Carve Pro CNC. Jen and Norm put together the 2-foot by 4-foot CNC and compare its setup and operation to that of the original X-Carve. The whole build took less than two hours, and we run through Inventables' Easel software for our first test cut. We're looking forward to a whole new world of projects with this CNC in our shop toolset!

If you're going to get a CNC router make your own. The kits are a rip off. If you have other tools you can put a machine together like this for a fraction of what integrators charge. Full price on this model is 10 grand. You can make it with 2 grand of parts and materials. Maybe less if you are careful. But to be successful you need a range of skills. @@1pcfred To your point, there are plenty of "accomplished woodworkers" who have never touched a table saw either...I meet with and speak with them regularly in Ohio's Amish country where I get most of my wood. A CNC router is just a tool...just like any other. You're certainly right in that it takes a certain skill set to use PROPERLY (similar to other woodworking tools, like hand planers and lathes) but it is a just a tool, non-the-less. I've never taken a work piece off my CNC and sent it to a Customer without "woodworking" that piece in some way afterward. However, I digress, I'm only saying all this to share MY PERSPECTIVE and not to denigrate yours in any way, of course. Thanks for sharing your opinion on the matter...I will consider it with respect as I hope you will mine.

@@rolandgdean there is such a thing as trying to embrace the spirit of meaning. CNC machines differ radically from tools that have come before them too. In fact they are not just tools. They are machines. There are distinctions between the two classifications. Beyond that there is the complexity of the programmable nature of CNC machines to consider as well. It is not a stretch to say that CNC machines can operate with no human intervention whatsoever. It just takes a number of them in the right configuration to do that. See SCARA arm.

I own one of the earlier X-Carve models. I must admit, since buying it, I've learned a lot about smaller CNC manufactures. (I had two semesters of CNC back in college 20-some years ago where we wrote G-code line by line, so I really know how long that took). I've found that Inventables is starting to fall behind other manufacturers, and the Easel software by Inventables isn't all that great. An amazing software program that is used by hobbyists and even professionals, is V-Carve by Vectric. I must admit, after using V-carve, I've never thought about designing in Easel.

I actually assumed they had the usual accordion-style covers but removed them for looks/learning.
Seems like they don’t have any protection. Pity.

they provide this proprietary system that has well, been used by literally the machining industry since god knows when long before x-carve has existed right? so very proprietary so the rest of the machining industry must now pay them royalties to use the tech the machining industry created LOL next Adam will be telling the rest of the movie industry that have to pay him for inventing special effects.

Inventables really missed the mark on this one. I was completely shocked when I saw the $9k "special" price and the $12k retail price for this machine. No one in their right mind will buy this. You can get a comparably build machine from Cnc4newbie for half the price and a MUCH MORE capable Avid CNC for $9k.

@@Spirit532 With the rolled ballscrews this machine uses you are not going to get better accuracy out of servos. You can map the machine anyways if it is a concern of yours. Not going to give you faster either. If you're losing steps you're just doing it wrong. Stepper motors run properly should not make noise. I've run stepper motors on pure sine waves and they are whisper quiet then. I've run them with inductive sense resistors too. Then they're loud. So if your stepper motors are noisy that is indicative of them being driven incorrectly. Usually they're being run over current. Stepper motors are not intuitive in their use. There's a lot of idiots out there trying to use them too. The same folks who have no chance of tuning servos.
