“Counting Coup and Cutting Horses” by Anthony R. McGinness

On the topic of counting coup, I thought I might mention the story of Francis Pegahmagabow. He was an Anishinaabe from Ontario who fought in WWI from beginning to end and became the deadliest British Empire sniper on the Western Front. He also snuck into enemy trenches to gather intel and prisoners. During his excursions, he would sit close to German sentries just to see if they'd notice him. Then he'd approach sleeping German soldiers and cut off pieces of the clothing they were wearing, which counted as a coup for the Anishinaabe. He was quite the mad lad.
It's pretty hilarious that the guy who screws up the whole plan is named "Big Head"

No other channel on the genre even comes close. As always an absolute masterpiece of historical storytelling!
Here in MN I often look around and think of a whole other sets of people who lived here for thousands of years since the retreat of the ice from the last ice age. I live near a lake in Minneapolis and sometimes in the still of the winter in my imagination I can almost hear the voices of the Indian children playing out on the ice and snow and see the smoke from the camp fires from not that long ago.
Since moving to Colorado a few years ago I've learned of some pretty interesting local history. Jimmy's Camp is a good one to check out. An early trader named Jimmy was murdered by a man from Mexico. Jimmy's Cherokee friends tracked down his murders, avenged his death, and returned to bury their friend. I'd love to hear more stories from Colorado!
Kiowa warrior Satanta was later tried and convicted of attacking an slaughtering a wagon train party. He was dumb enough to go to the Agency for his rations and brag about the attack while standing in line. All the rituals and medicine didn't work in this venture either.
A wonderful video on life of the Native Warriors. The way this story was told held me captivated. The accompaning artwork brought their story to life. I could in a strange way almost hear their ponys galloping headlong at the Pawnee. War cries echoing in my mind. Truly how you presented this was very authentic. 💪🏻🙏🏻✨
wish History channel picked up on stories like this and made it into a series like Vikings. Tons of material to work with. real life situations not just sagas
Way to go, Big Head!🤨
My wife children and I were Baptist missionaries to the Northern Cheyenne in southeastern Montana We lived on the reservation with them...we learned alot about the Northern Cheyenne and their history...It is truly tragic..
Your story telling abilities are incredible, love these series. Thank you.
Absolutely outstanding!
Amazing content, superb story-telling.
Another great story of life and death on the great plains among the Indians tribes. I really enjoy your work. I am currently working on a video about the battle of summit springs. The dog soldier, chief in that battle was Tall Bull. Is that the same Tall Bull in your story? You say that Black Kettle was kill at Sand Creek, but he died at Washita. Keep your videos coming. They inspired me.
So engaging, I watched it 4 times ;)
O wow!! Another amazing story on the way can't wait. Thank you brother.
Thank you for sharing another fascinating story with great pictures to back it up!
In college two of my roommates were natives. Cheraqua Apache, and a Blackfoot native. I went to the res of the Apache, his uncle was a medicine man shaman. A peyote ceremony and a sweat and vision quest,5 days of hallucinations and throwing up other things. At sometime, the quest was shown to me,what was my true place in life, very very interesting. Had a special sand painting made of my trail. Usually sand paintings are erased when their finished,I had mine glued to a board came out perfect, but I think the spirits behind the trail weren’t happy about being glued. Oh well.
What an excellent channel you have! I’ve read a couple of the books & am delighted to listen to your stories as you read so well & your voice is smooth & clear with no “crutches” such as “um” & “uh”, LOL! You remind me of Rob Lowe! Keep telling these stories!
