  • Once exiled from Nebraska, the Pawnees are now regaining a presence in their homeland due to a remarkable act of reconciliation. In 2007, Roger and Linda Welsch did what few descendants of European immigrants have ever done in the 500-year history of America. They returned their acreage that rests along the Loup River near Dannebrog to its original owners, the Pawnees.

I’m very happy for the Pawnee people and grateful to Roger Welsch and family for helping restore at least some of their land to reinter the remains of the Pawnee ancestors.

An amazing tribe, reading the Pawnee Mythology combined with The Lost Universe changed my entire understanding of the world for the better. So much wisdom and sacred compassion for others in the richness of their ways. Love you all!

That’s fully beautiful in the best way. Shane upon our ignorance for letting this be so late in coming but what a wonderful all around gift. I was born in Nebraska it never made me cry in a happy way before today that I recall.

Such an amazing story! Thank you so much for sharing! I'm emotional because not only did I grow up in Dannebrog, NE (which very few people can say) but also I have Native American ancestry. Roger Welsch is a hero for our community and the Pawnee. I learned so much!!!

The success of the West, the reason it became so powerful, is due to its focus on abstractions and innovations rather than "blood and soil" and tradition. Mastery of land is powerful, but mastery of abstractions is even more powerful in a world of high technology and science. Elon Musk didn't become the world's richest man by owning the most land or following his tribal traditions. Like it or not, that's the world we live in now, thanks mostly to Western civilization.
