  • If you've ever wondered why a shot from your favorite film looked so amazing, it might be because of soft light. I'll break down a commonly used soft lighting technique known as the book light.

    What’s your most favorite lit scene of all time?

    • @filmmakeranto
      @filmmakeranto Рік тому

      I am a big fan of how Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is lit. But I love Ben-Hur, 2011 Space Odeyssey, Tree of life and The Dark night, Godfather. If there is one scene that would be the night time shoot out in No Country for Old men or the night building on fire war scene from 1917.

    Great video Ryan! Quick, informative and very well explained. Final images for each setup looked awesome, plus I'm glad you mentioned the net technique for dropping exposure in windows. It's such a great tip and very few people think to mention it when it comes to lighting breakdowns 😁

    You get great diffusion fabric from Joanne's, the fabric store. I got some unbleached Muslin for a project there.

    I would love to have a good video for scenario that I am in! It's a small/medium bedroom, my goal is to slightly separate the background that I'm having which is just a gray paper that I have to stand next to. I want to do tutorials on different filmmaking gear. I always was more about delivering the message then quality of my video. But it seems like it's time to step up the game.

      I made a budget setup with only using a gray wall. Lmk if this helps at all (skip to 2m12s): m.ua-cam.com/video/e9uRdcXhLyM/v-deo.html

    Hey Ryan do you prefer bleached or unbleached muslin? Which would you use more often?

    • @ryanmickey
      @ryanmickey  Рік тому +1

      Hey! I mostly always use bleached muslin because of the flexibility of having bi-color lights. That being said, if you’re using daylight temp lights, it might be a good idea to have some unbleached muslin in case you want a warmer look!

    I always accidentally light a bit too harsh for my liking (especially with my backlight making hot spots on my face) because I don't have an external monitor. You've got a nice soft image there!Anyways, I watched Brady Bessette do a video about adding a catch light which isn't a bad idea. Adding a dim MC in front of the talent (in that last shot) just to get that twinkle in the eye (if you want that look of course). Anyways, SOLID VIDEO 😁👍

    How is the book light different than a light through a frame of equal surface? Photo studios use the book/v flats a lot ...

    • @ryanmickey
      @ryanmickey  Рік тому +1

      The light will get diffused twice! It becomes even softer from hitting the bounce compared to only going through the single layer of diffusion. Nothing wrong with using a single layer though. Depends on the look you're going for!

    • @cubul32
      @cubul32 Рік тому

      @@ryanmickey yes. I guess what I had in mind, was more about v flats, bouncing once off that.

    • @ryanmickey
      @ryanmickey  Рік тому +1

      @@cubul32 oh okay! I honestly have never used a v-flat before, so I can’t really say what that look would be like, but the more bouncing/silks, the softer of light!

    Can we get one on how to light people with darker skin tones

    • @ryanmickey
      @ryanmickey  Рік тому

      My range for skin tones is usually 50-58 IRE. In this case, darker skin tones would fall around 50-52 IRE!

    Great video, thank you ! But I am a bit annoyed by the way you overlap your cut sentences... I guess it's ok for a 30s short but not in a video where you take your time to talk.

      @@ryanmickey I guess it's harder for me as English is not my main language 😉

    • @WhySteve
      @WhySteve Рік тому +1

      Interesting because it's a "youtuber" technique to do lots of jump cuts with L & J cuts to ensure a consistent flow. I never considered what it must be light for somebody of another language watching. Definitely something I'll keep in mind too from now on. By the way, don't watch film riot if you think this Ryan was going too fast haha.

    • @PierreAlainMaire
      @PierreAlainMaire Рік тому +1

      @@WhySteve TikToker technique 😛 L&J are, for me, the way the sound switches before or after the image does. Here we have the end of some words overspoken by the next sentence, where there should be at least the same space as inside a sentence - and IRL we need to breathe there. The talking rhythm is not fast, so the overlap is not responding to a rush. Not breathing between sentences for Film Riot - and no overlap of their sound tracks either 😉 And i did not say Ryan was fast - the talking is rather normal/slow here, warm and enjoyable for a "tutorial".
