    This is for Muctales ( / muctales ) for his great Mint Solo No Damage run in NDX~
    Keep up the good work buddy!
    As the only character able to use healing spells in Phantasia, Mint is a vital part of Cress and company's battles. She's the only healer in the series that doesn't possess any offensive spells (Mint's Pikohan and Piko Piko Hammer do not deal damage in Phantasia and its revisions) and combined with the fact her Attack growth is pretty bad and her weapon of choice, Mint surely fits the pure healer trope pretty damn well.
    She's got a ton of tools to buff and debuff all sorts of parameters. Only thing she can't modify is magic damage/defense because of how Phantasia's spell damage formula works.
    She seemingly got nerfed between SFC and PSX, making a lot of her full-screen spells single target and her casting times were made much longer. On the other hand, her spells now heal in percentages and not static numbers and her previously full-screen-only healing spells like Nurse now cover the entirety of the field. She also got Time Stop! Which is one of the most broken spells ever
    And then ToPX came and made Time Stop a whole lot less useful, oh well...
    Regardless, she'll be absolutely pivotal in any sort of party.

    Haste is a spell that needs to be in more Tales games.

      Seriously! Movement speed buffing/debuffing needs to be more of a standard in Tales.
      In 3D I believe only Fiend Fusion and Gravity Well did that, respectively...

      Kevassa02 true but wasn't Fiend Fusion really broken

    • @xeanheart
      @xeanheart 10 років тому

      Fiend Fusion was meh.
      Also, Quickness is another spell that boosts speed, but it ain't anywhere near as awesome as Haste.

      Well seeing as how nowadays Tales games have all this speedy movement with the dash cancels and the side steps and what now there is no room for movement based buffs anymore :(

    • @Kevassa
      @Kevassa  10 років тому +4

      NDX has a lot of forwardstepping and backstepping, which are faster than running, and still has room for Haste.
      You know, movement also affects steps
      Haste makes everything better :)

    The lovely Mint, the very image of the pure-hearted priestess archetype. You know what I find funny Kev? On the Tales boards that I thankfully no longer frequent due to how confrontational most of the folks there tended to be, the dorks there were obsessed with trying to figure out what Mint's houjutsu actually was.
    Sucks so much of Mint's SFC spell library was removed. Glad they kept Deep Mist going since it's great for interrupting enemies. Just imagine Valkyrie in current Tales games; extra power boost to all allies for only 15 TP? Haha, yes please! XD

      The discussion of Houjutsu is a little muddy due to how Phantasia takes it lightheartedly most of the time. I don't think too much on it since Phantasia doesn't do a really good job explaining a lot of things and it prefers to glance over it in an almost unaware and comical way.
      On the other hand, I'm more interested how Houjutsu is supposed to be translated in english... If this was localized in the 90s they'd likely outright call it "Healing Artes" without even caring for the meaning (much like Seirei became "Summon Spirits"), so maybe it's a moot point again if we look at it that way :p

      I actually heavily followed that conversation before the Tales boards shut down. I never really peaked in to speak up, but it's an INCREDIBLY difficult situation to deal with on my current TOP project as I have no clue if she's capable of having any kind of 'damage arte' or not due to how TOP handles it :|

    • @Flegan777
      @Flegan777 10 років тому

      Xjustin3009X I suppose they realized that since bopping enemies with an orb-topped cane wasn't amounting to much, they decided to give healer characters like Mint holy attack magic so they could do more than just stand around waiting for HP to dip below 75% and whatnot. But you make a good point. Mint was considered a joke character in Tales of VS because of this.

      法術 means practicing law/method/way/magic. There's no connotation in divinity or religion in the original context ("Divine Power" is part of GBA translation's carelessness). As far as terminology, it's a really difficult thing to translate but as I said I don't take it too seriously and would rather drop the original meaning if I had the choice in translating Phantasia.
      They don't develop much about the background in how the mechanics work or if the term is just being cool for the sake of being cool (which is very likely the case). Phantasia sadly does this a lot with its lore... They could call it Poop Power and it'd change nothing really since the game's so simple to a fault.
      EDIT: Actually looking at some old notes of mine I had an attempt at some point to mix "Divine Power" and the original meaning of Houjutsu related to Law and Methodism; just simply Dharmic Artes. This joins the religious connotation of the localization and law of the universe aspects of the original script.

      Kevassa02 Well then it would become houhou (way, method) or houritsu (law) if you want to get technical about the kanji. Houjutsu sounds like a made up word to me in that case, like when they made up the word genjuu for the summons in FF4.
      It's a real shame they didn't clarify or expand on it. I guess I can sort of see why those Tales forum crazies got so bent out of shape about it.
      Or we could joke and say Mint is truly the badass of the universe since she can toy with the laws of existence to heal and restore. XD

    I like the way Mint says 'Pikohan' / 'Piko Piko Hammer' in PSX / PSP Version!
    Such an adorable and cute voice! 😍😍

    If their were priests like her, Filia (from Slayers), and Natasha (from Fire Emblem) at my local church I would never miss a single day of it.

    Oh! It's my cutie Mint-Chan ♥
    I'm really glad Delay and Haste came back in NDX. It's funny how buff spells don't always succeed in SFC but hey, Barrier on everybody is quite broken. Btw, does Deep Mist also stagger in the SFC version? (it's actually extremely broken in the PSX version). Also, I'm not totally sure about it, but I think Dispel remove both buff and debuff bonuses for everybody (even monsters), though it may not be the case in the SFC version

    • @Kevassa
      @Kevassa  10 років тому +1

      Debuffs don't stagger in SFC like other versions as far as I know, but I could be wrong (too lazy to boot and test right now hahahaha).
      Dispel doesn't affect monsters in SFC for sure, but I dunno how it is in others...

    Hey guys! Did you know that Star Ocean: Fantastic Space Odyssey have a spell named 'Fixed Cloud' which stuns enemies? The animation looks like Pikopiko Hammer made of water vapour lolololol
    ^ This is me on my slowpoke mode. Just noticed that today (24th Dec 2014) when working on Fix Cloud page on Star Ocean Wiki. Make fool of me, guys. I deserve that.

      Well, Grandia's Sue also has a POW HAMMER Spell which is pretty similiar to Mint's Spell ^^

      Oh and while we're at it, Elize from Tales of Xillia as well, though that doesn't really count since it's the same series :P

      It really doesn't count considering Pikohan (or Pow Hammer) is a traditionally recurring spell. :p
      Didn't know about Grandia's, though.

    Time Stop in Tales of Phantasia X is usefull?

    • @Kevassa
      @Kevassa  8 років тому +1

      It has less practical uses than in previous versions but it's still good for those pesky random encounters in the lower Morlia Gallery. That time is enough for the rest of the party to clean up usually.

    • @andonishiraiwa
      @andonishiraiwa 8 років тому

      So, they can move while the speel is casted?

    • @Kevassa
      @Kevassa  8 років тому +3

      Yes, only Mint is unable to move in ToPX probably to nerf the spell a bit. Since spells are seamless in this version other characters can behave normally like casting spells and doing artes, etc during the animation just like more recent games.
