A stupendous album. I would advise anyone who wants to hear the best of Dan live to pick up the DVD or Blu-ray, get on the best home theater system you can, put on the DTS audio, and crank it. The audio engineering is as superb as the musician ensemble. When the back up singers come roaring out of my rear speakers on Cousin Dupree and Pretzel Logic, I want to cry.

Starting in 1993 I began writing lyrics to Donald and Walter thru their record label Reprise. My lyrics to them at the time were cryptic lyrics sad, taunting, deliberate, painful, clever, etc... imitating their style of writing attached with a letter to them asking where were they, why don't you make a comeback, and if you can't think of anything to write here's some material- With a few F bombs thrown in to spice things up a bit! Well, they got my lyrics, and thought up the clever idea to have some Private Investigators tail follow me doing drug activity, not raising my daughter, playing hide and seek in life, not being responsible etc...took the lyrics I wrote and coupled them with the Intel Donald and Walter received from these PIs and wrote songs extracting words and lines I had lyrically written and sent to them....and what they were watching me doing. This blend of the taking out parts of my lryics and what I was doing in private thru collecting Intel made for the cryptic lyrics you hear line for line musically all thru 11Tracks of Whack. It's objective?.... to hurt, rule, ambush, annoy, insult, mind fuck, and basically attempt to piss me off. When I heard key words in Beckers "Lucky Henry" (the word "boxcars") at that point that word caught my attention I realized that they received my material and every line started to unfold. I discovered they had initially achieved the upper hand over me. Well, naturally it pissed me off so much so, that without going into all the horrid details, set into motion a creative duel... (the hidden messages they refer to and mention in their 2 against nature concert video interview) ....which lasted thru the release of 3 more entire albums: 2 buy Steely Dan, 1 by Don Fagen. All 4 albums were designed and targeted to hurt, discredit, poke fun at, humiliate, trespass, exploit, mock, jeer, beat up verbally and musically, my character, my self esteem and self worth and threatened my sense of well being, my ambition my personal and sex relations. In other words, I am the only person I know of to have the pleasure? of having 4 albums written entirely and directly to me which they so cleverly constructed that I could never prove it . .....and I just got finished telling everyone about what actually went down...even though if you asked them if this ever happened for legal reasons they could say yes. They would have to lie because they did some illegal shit to get Intel on me. Anyway, I have forgiven them for what they did and learned that the pen is mightier than the sword and I would never be so sinister as to humiliate a person the way they did to me.
Donald Fagen seems to be channeling Jamie Fox channeling Ray Charles in "Ray"--just hipper than hip. The mark of a really great band is they sound just as good (or even better) in live performance than on record--certainly the case here!
Unfortunately, the problem with Fagen's singing is that he doesn't know how to enunciate lyrics. As such, most of the words to SD songs are almost unintelligible! It's when you find those words on liner notes or on the internet so you can actually understand what he's written that you learn they're so utterly brilliant! This song is a classic example of that. It's the lament of "failed men" everywhere -- when you actually can understand the words. I've spoken with some of their top studio players, btw, who say it's not fun to record with them because NO TAKE is ever good enough. Ya gotta do it 30 times, all the while realizing that, for example, the second take was by far the best.
