Little bit late for Halloween but it should still be fine right?
Deathsmiles is Cave's iconic Halloween themed bullet hell that first came out in arcades in 2007 and was Cave's highest grossing arcade success.
After the initial release it also got a Mega Black Label release with adjusted mechanics and added content.
It has gotten many ports since, some more successful than others.
Currently playing the Deathsmiles I・II collection which came out on Steam and every modern console recently.
This port is basically the definite version of the game, it's really good and makes the other version on Steam obsolete. Way better slowdown accuracy, less input lag and brand new playable characters with multiple new soundtracks.
The DLC adds the 5 main girls from Mahou Otome as playable characters. Mahou Otome being Cave's big mobile gacha game that takes place in the Deathsmiles universe.
The characters get their own dialogue too and I really like how they managed to blend the new art with the old. Seeing them edited into the old Deathsmiles cutscene art is quite a trip.
And they're not just pallet swaps of existing characters either, they tried to add and expand on the already existing Deathsmiles roster with new and unique shots.
Plumeria for example lets you put your familiar stationary, you can then hide inside it while it acts as a perfect shield against revenge bullets. It's very unique and new, especially for a very established game that hasn't seen new content since 2010.
Two new soundtracks for the game too, one is composed of existing Mahou Otome tracks and another is an arranged soundtrack that blends the Mahou Otome tracks with the Deathsmiles soundtrack.
Overall very high effort DLC.
I used Souffle for this run. She's very strong and her shot can angle in the direction you move towards, giving her good coverage too. Probably the easiest to clear Death Mode out of the new characters?
Her down side is that her lock-on shot sucks, it's very weak and your meter drains very slowly while using it, making hyper recharges extremely hard.
So basically very good for survival and more sucky for score (she's extremely good in the Version 1.1 modes though).
Deathsmiles gives you many options to adjust the difficulty to your skill level.
The first 6 stages let you pick between level 1 to 3 for the difficulty. If you pick level 3 four times you activate Death Mode Level 1, and unique revenge bullets start appearing that you can cancel with your option familiar.
There is an optional very hard EX stage you can pick after the first 6 stages. Going there increases your Death Mode level by 1, putting you in Death Mode Level 2 if you were already at Level 1.
Going to the final stage then puts you in Death Mode Level 3, which is the hardest you can make the game on the Vanilla release.
On Death Mode Level 3 enemies shoot an insane amount of revenge bullets and the final bosses also get buffed. Jitterbug even gains an additional phase with a crazy final attack.
Deathsmiles is a very complex game when it comes to scoring so here's some textbooks to get you started on this course:
Mechanics: shmups.system11.org/viewtopic...
Overview: www.trueachievements.com/game...
Insane enemy item chart: cdn.discordapp.com/attachment...
All of this will be on the test.
Oversimplified tl;dr:
1) Kill each enemy with the right shot for more items to fill the hyper.
2) Hyper for more items and get to fever mode asap at 10k.
3) Spawn tons of items right before the hyper ends for an instant refill.
4) Break items into skulls during hyper, don't break them outside hyper.
4) ????
5) Profit.
There are actually still more advanced scoring mechanics that are simply not explained anywhere in English, like the tutorial bug, the item limit or the burn points combined with enemy i-frame scoring. There is a very good Japanese guide that explains everything though! - deathsmiles.game-info.wiki/
Maybe I or someone else can translate all of that onto the wiki at some point.

I really enjoyed watching this run! Having concentrated on the game during October, my first impressions, having not played the game before, was that I might be in over my head. After getting some tips from other players and just giving it some time, I managed to find my way through. I got my clear with the adaptive difficulty, by not going full level 3, though I did do level 3 for Volcano to help boost my score. My first "legit" Cave clear that wasn't from either the M2 Super Easy mode, or something like Mushi's Novice mode. Watching a run like this, and seeing even a super skilled player like yourself struggle in spots certainly makes me feel a lot better about my meager skill level, and hopefully a sign that I can eventually get there. Great stuff!
I love playing deathsmiles for survival but it feels like you need to get a phd to understand wtf is going on with the scoring system ha.
Always quite enjoyed this game, even if the control on this game is a bit cumbersome for keyboard users. Neat production values, and a fun system all around. Tried to learn the game with Casper way back, but the Gorge proved too hard lol.
Nice clear man :D
yo
I don't have anything to say but I can say that I like your content of Bullet Hell/shmups games. I really like it!
I kinda discovered you by watching your old Raiden videos
That game was my childhood
I currently managed to do an ALL clear of MBL Normal mode Rank 1 as Souffle on the PC port!
very epic
Did that on 360 back in the day. Makes you feel invincible doesn't it?
Heck yeah!! Ice Palace in MBL is a lot of fun
very good gomaotsu dlc
ok, didn't expect track with vocals on a Hades castle stage.
Like how you're not skipping dialogs, shudder to imagine the time lost on failed attempts
Incredible run! How long did it took for the successful EX ALL run? I would love you to see you do the remaining characters! Ranun is crazy with the scoring especially in the Volcano stage because if you use the shot instead of the laser, you can rack up the points since the shot deals splash damage whereas the laser deals minor damage, at that rate you can get into a second power up easily around halfway through the stage.
Rosalie is like Casper's attack patterns except the shot attack doesn't boomerang back. Plumeria is crazy with bosses because you can set it around a position on where it can deal the most damage and then the rest you can spend on defending. So which character would you recommend to any player using the DLC for a 100% guaranteed 1CC (No EX)?
Oh yeah, in MBL, does the background change colour due to the miasma?
Question: The DLC adaptation of the Gothic wa Mahou Otome mobile game features main five girls to play with as the English server localization of the mobile game skipped?
This is amazing. I was considering picking up this version sometime!
Although I'm overwhelmed by the versions. For a new player, should I look at vanilla 1.0? Or vanilla MBL? I recall the 1.1 versions are more difficult for 1CC purposes so I thought about the 1.0s.
Thanks! Vanilla 1.0 is a good place to start I'd say as it was the first arcade release and all the other modes basically expand on that version.
@@JaimersSTG Thanks for the suggestion! I played Vanilla 1.0 for awhile but MBL Normal feels far better to me. I'm already working on learning how to 1CC in Level 1 Death Mode after 1CC'ing without it.
Good job ! Are theses characters equivalent in gameplay to the original ones ?
Thanks! All of these characters are completely different from the base shots.
10:10 - restock bancho.
uohh
Jaimers And What Is This Rank On Level?
I'm surprised to read you say its better than the Degica version.
I've never been a fan of II, but i've played the hell out of the OG DeathSmiles till I cleared with all characters. Quite unsure if it's worth getting this when I already have the Degica version. We'll see.
DLC characters seem a bit off here, tbh.
this has less lag tho
Degica version is missing some of the arcade-specific slow downs, so that's why the newer version is better.
that moble game needs a tl
Ah yes
The Cave game with arguably the most complex scoring system is essentially *Progear with Idols*
*_Never change, Cave_*
they should make the final boss invincible when using bomb unlike other Cave game, that why people said that this is one of easiest Cave game to play,...but nevertheless this is good so that at least more people can achieve 1CC
