“What are you?” It’s a question Trelawny, the son of Jamaican immigrants, is asked and asks himself throughout If I Survive You. Growing up, Trelawny tries on various identities, all the while offering wry commentary on his uncomfortable situation and the circumstances of those around him. We also see the world through the eyes of his brother, his parents, and his cousin, and through these at times disparate viewpoints, perhaps we come closer to answering Trelawny’s question. Or maybe we leave with more questions regarding who and what any of us are in a world that so desperately demands categorization.

ABOUT JONATHAN ESCOFFERY
Jonathan Escoffery is the author of the linked story collection, If I Survive You (MCD/ Farrar, Straus & Giroux). He is the recipient of the 2020 Plimpton Prize for Fiction, the 2020 ASME Award for Fiction, and a 2020 National Endowment for the Arts Literature fellowship. His writing has appeared in The Paris Review, American Short Fiction, Electric Literature, Zyzzyva, and AGNI, and has been anthologized in The Best American Magazine Writing 2020 and elsewhere. Jonathan is a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University and resides in Oakland, CA.

I'm driving through your book reviews & suggestions as I've never done. Stumbling upon this review/recommendation...unreal.
You see, I know (not at all well, however) the author. Nearly twenty years ago, we met, via a writer's site called Writer's Cafe (a place created for writers to share their work, collaborate, critique...many of us even met a few times via lovely writer's retreats...it was GLORIOUS). I called him J.Esco. He was one hell of a writer, then, &, it seems, he's only gotten better with age & experience, which is awesome to know. This title has been on my list for at least a year, now. The premise drew my unyielding attention.
After my next read, this.
Damn, but what great years those were. I met a lot of truly gifted writers for consecutive years. A handful became genuine family, & still are.

@AlmightyOtaku I agree, as much as I ADORE her music, especially her first 3 albums, I feel like this is what she's happy doing now, and I love that for her.
@@arturmonteiro8541She can do BOTH!! GOD made more than one career. It's not like she has to choose. She can read books in between her studio sessions.
@@dwaynerhone9733 she is in fact making music, but i doubt she’ll ever be able to be as mainstream and successful as she was between 2002 and 2006, plus the industry doesn’t deserve her, exploited the hell out of her unique sound.
@arturmonteiro8541 In all the times they "exploited" it doesn't sound nowhere near as good as Amerie. Her sound, singing, and style was totally different and unique. That girl was SINGING on them songs. We still listening to them today. People shouldn't give up so easily.

A women that can speak fluently is always gon b attractive. I call this When SPIRIT ties into soul... That L.O.V.E LUV.... AHHHHH! the fruits of my labour.... the sight of you, the equivalent to The finner things in life, everytime I look at you miss A! (It's the thought that counts even if she never knew who typed this she would still be intrigued depending on how sharp she is with words because all women are different some don't care if men don't know how to hold a conversation/ the key to holding LOVE together for unlimited years food for thought? It's the thought that counts).

I've just happened to have a major problem I'm currently facing but always been facing everytime A certain specific women strucks her stuff i.e speaks sings whatever the talent is I can get lured into becoming ROMEO aka pen game on over overly spill spillage which makes me wanna milk the cow... My thoughts.....The title takes away from the entire book. Doesn't match up to your beautiful critique.
