You HAVE to read The Girl With All the Gifts!! It's so good. I read it early this summer and could not put it down. They're making it into a movie in the UK.
Dark Eden and Mother of Eden are mine. I love that the covers illustrate the landscapes depicted in the book perfectly (and the colors used match the "feel" of the stories)
Haha that's me too. I just can't purchase the item that's in the front because I think a lot of people have touched it. Same with books and magazines I have to examine it to make sure the pages aren't bent or the bind is not perfect. Total OCD!
Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon, The Program by Suzanne Young, Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige, Let's Get Lost by Adi Alsaid, The Vacationers by Emma Straub, The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, the entire Cinder series by Marissa Meyer, the entire Giver series by Lois Lowry, and the entire City of Ember series by Jeanne Duprau
Your sidenote was so relatable! I don't have severe OCD, but I do the exact same thing with books. I always pick one behind the display copy that "speaks to me" or looks the most pristine.
Taking things from further back on the supermarket shelf makes total sense. Even my husband knows to do that for me now. And I feel no guilt taking books from the back. I feel the book is in better condition that way.
I think my some of my favorite book covers are for: "All the light we cannot see" - love the blue monochromatic cover and it's also slightly iridescent..just a really beautiful cover, "The School for Good & Evil" - This is the first middle grade book I've found myself interested in reading and part of it was because of the cover - it almost tells you about the story in a single snapshot and I think it's dark but beautiful at the same time...and without being too "cartoonish", "11/22/63" - I like that it has a bit of a nostalgic look from the newspaper headline but also has the look of a "thriller" because of the shade of red added. Also, I completely know what you mean by not taking the first of anything that is on a shelf - especially books because I also like my books in pristine condition. I also feel like people touch the first item on the shelf and then I think of germs so that is another reason I don't like taking the first item off the shelf because I feel like I'd be taking home one big germ lol. Love your videos!
I love those Jane Austen editions! I only have one Penguin cloth bound book, which is Middlemarch by George Eliot, but that's definitely one of my favourites. I love that you think about the feelings of the books that get left behind! It's not something that happens to me often, but there have been times where a "flawed" object has managed to pull on my heartstrings so much that I buy it over something in perfect condition.
My favorite cover is for Made You Up by Francesca Zappia. That's also one of my favorite books of all time (which I always try to push on people). The cover is watercolor style, and looks like an actual painting. The first time I saw it, I had a knee-jerk reaction of wanting it as a framed painting in my house. It's just so beautiful. It has a person on the cover, but you don't really see her face, as she's holding an umbrella. It's an actual piece of art IMO. So beautiful. The book itself is also great :)
My favorite covers (US editions, hardcover): An American Marriage Queenie The Love Prison Made and Unmade Every Day is for the Thief With the Fire on High
Ooo, the My Lady Jane cover is very striking and I haven't heard of it before, so I will be looking that one up. And I'm pretty sure I have The Circle on my TBR. I do that with books too! I feel like the second or third one in the stack is usually more pristine, so that's the one I'll go for.
My favorite covers that I own are We, the Drowned , Uprooted (UK), the Barnes and Nobles leatherbound Pride and Prejudice and my clothbound Lord of the Rings box set 😍
First: I downright loathe people-covers. It doesn't matter if they're mystical or beautiful or silhouetted or even animated, I hate them all. People-covers kill my chance of having my own vision of the people I'll be meet in the book. Second: The whole spiel about your OCD consoled me. Now I know I'm not alone and that I'm not crazy (well, I guess it doesn't totally disprove that lol) for talking to inanimate objects, especially books, and even developing connections with them. P.S. More spiels! Third: You're a brilliant woman.
Great picks for the book covers. Those are the kinds of covers that make you want to thumb through the novel. The girl with all the gifts - that's a very intriguing one. I wonder if the story is as you described the cover. You've teased it well.
I don't actually speak to my books or give them voices, but I love them all to pieces, it's kind of insane hahaha I take really good care of them, my boyfriend and friends always pick on me for being so careful with my books. And I also pick a book in the bookstore to look at, and them put it back in the shelf to choose the second or third behind it to take home, and I thought that I probably have some level of OCD, because I didn't feel that was normal, but thank God there are other people that do the same!
Love the My Lady Jane cover, the U.K. version is not good at all sadly. The Bees is such a wonderful novel, the contents are just as good if not better than the stunning cover. I love the print on and around the words of All The Birds in the Sky, I'd like a tshirt in that print. Love your Waterstones demand in London, brilliant. You HAVE to go to Foyles. You have to. I take books that are (almost pristine if not pristine) second or third too I did it today with the new Tess Gerritsen. I don't have the voices though 😂 you've cracked me up. Loved this video. Have you seen The Essex Serpent's cover that is currently my favourite book cover in a loooooong time.
No, I haven't seen that cover (The Essex Serpent)...hold on, I'm checking now... ----😳😳😳 Whoaly moley is that cover stunning. I don't know what it's about but I must. Read. Must. Touch. Book. Absolutely stunning. Just saw UK My Lady Jane cover...noooo. I quite agree with you. In this global age where we are so connected--and especially where fashion/style tend to really overlap--I just don't understand decisions like that one there... And yes, I WILL go to Foyles next trip!! :D
"I didn't want to make this cover feel bad" Haha, yes! As a kid I used to give personality to my clothes, i'd make sure to rotate between my dresses so as to not make the others feel bad, and even when they were worn beyond repair i'd cry when my parents tried to throw them away. ... Glad I got that under control :P
Omg I love all those covers! I really love my Barnes and Noble edition of Jurassic Park/The Lost World, also their edition of Wicked. Then the UK hardcover versions of Stephanie Perkins anthologies. Lastly, I adore the illustrated version of Pride and Prejudice from Alice Pattullo! :) I can't wait for your anthology!
This is being said in the most loving way so please don't take it wrong, but I love that your crazy like me! I do the same thing. I will feel bad for not buying something or deciding to throw something out.
Ok so first, I had no idea I did the same thing you do about "humanizing" inanimate objects and being selective about which objects I take home until I met my fiancé and he pointed it out! Anyway, I share that same "quirk". I feel bad for the ones I didn't take home. Most recently I love the covers for Queen of the Night and A Little Life - both are very evocative and makes you want to read them.
I get how you feel when buying books! I never want to take the copy that I feel is the most battered and that's usually the one in the front.. But now I feel bad for it😞 That Jane Austen box set is gorgeous; as an avid cover buyer I need it!
I do the same thing for my books AND my grocery. I always take the 2nd or 3rd one (sometimes even further!). I don't even know why I do that for books, I'm always looking for the one with the most pristine condition. But it doesn't make sense because it's gonna get damaged anyway haha. Just a habit I guess!
I too, purchase anything in the grocery from the front! I always go two or three items back! And I also pick up the book that's second or third because no one has touched them! Mainly because not everyone is thinking how I am thinking so I'm SURE everyone is getting the first book or first item in the grocery store!!! Besides, when I touch the first book (the second or third) that's MY book because I've already given it life by touching it! LOL.
omgosh I do the exact same things with books in book shops! I have also figured out that if I straight away pick up the 2nd/3rd book in the row/pile and then I decide to buy it I feel much better because its like the good vibes I felt about this book is the exact copy im buying too. In the past ive definitely put down the 1st copy then gone to pick up a nicer copy and felt too bad and picked the 1st one back up again and bought it hahahaha ah well, great video! loved all the book covers so pretty! x
It seems so many of us feel this way--do you think people who read a lot are predisposed to such quirks/anxieties? Because sooo many of us do this, according to this comments section! *big hug to all of us*
Love this vid, I'm the Same way with purchasing books & magazines. When I pick up a mag I have to be the first one to read the entire thing without anyone else touching the pages, lol. With books I love to be the first to open the cover and bend back the pages, (yes, OCD) LOL!!! I didn't have a favorite book cover, they were all gorg...thx for sharing...
Hi Ameriie, do you have planes to do a video on your private collection (book tour) Do you ever buy books after you've read them just because of their cover even if the book was not that good of a read 😏 if that's not the reason why buy a book you've read already for free?
Oh. My. God. haha!! I'm the same exact way with picking items from the shelves. I never get the one on the edge… always one or two behind. The one in front- even if it's not- seems like it would be dented and dingy. And like you said: the ones further back would be the ones less picked over. You're not alone! ^_^
Haha! We definitely have something in common! I'm the same way with books & magazines. My husband laughs and always says I'm looking for "the good one". Omg, and shinier hardcovers with fingerprints all over? Noo!! 😂
That Six of Crows book is stunning!!!😍 The Bees on the other hand, I can't even!!! I have such a phobia! 😂😂@that sidenote I do the same thing at grocery stores, not because I give them personalities, but because I feel like the ones behind them will be fresher. I do other OCD'ish things tho...I like most things in even numbers, except the TV volume which has to be in multiples of 5. 😨 Sooooo, I feel ya girl!! lol
YES THE REMOTE CONTROL! I often have to go "up" so if I overshoot a volume #, I'll go down and then go back up to get to the right volume. For instance, if I'm on 5 and want to go to 10 but accidentally shoot up to 12, I'll go down to at least 8 or 9 and then go back up to 10. *le sigh*
+Books Beauty Ameriie Same!! I thought I was the only one that likes to go up till I reach my desired volume😂 If I pass it, I feel like uneasy or like I "failed" And once that's all done, I feel completely relaxed to enjoy what I'm watching😂 Makes no sense to anyone else, and is probably completely insane buuuut that's just me lol (and you as well, it seems 😂)
OMG!! I do the same thing with buying any kind of products!! lol! I'll feel bad if there are only two products left on the shelf and I only need one, but the other is left by its self ...😭. Your OCD stories were funny 😆
What you told about giving things personalities and feelings is soo relatable to me. My partner made a ''play" for me with chocolate bunnies we got for easter and of course it was impossible for me even to think about eating them after that. When he told me he ate ''Goldy" I didn't belive him! I thought it was extremely cruel xD
Loved the book covers! I am obsessed (!!) with my illustrated edition of ''Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", the illustrations are soo beautiful.
You HAVE to read The Girl With All the Gifts!! It's so good. I read it early this summer and could not put it down. They're making it into a movie in the UK.
"Why don't we fall in love !!!!" I was in high school when that song came out and now I am 32! I'm so happy you are doing book reviews !!
Total OCD!
I love the way you explain covers...it's such a unique way of describing colors or images!

Amanda Seyfried is her name. She was in mean girls and mama mia. I really like her acting.
Taking things from further back on the supermarket shelf makes total sense. Even my husband knows to do that for me now. And I feel no guilt taking books from the back. I feel the book is in better condition that way.

Love the black edges of Six of Crows. Ugh, books are fantastic.
Omg I do that with inanimate objects too!!! And feeling bad about books and putting one down.

I LOVE colored pages they give me life!!! So many beautiful books in this video!!
Miss your music, when are we going to hear more from you? Such a talented singer and dancer.
I loved the Goosebumps covers.
Your personality 🙌🏾 and the OCD thing is totally me! Lol!! You're so relatable 😁
Yep, when I got Six of Crows after you recommended it to me I was reacting the same way. Love the black edges on the pages.
Yay! I hope you love the story!
My favorite covers (US editions, hardcover):
An American Marriage
Queenie
The Love Prison Made and Unmade
Every Day is for the Thief
With the Fire on High

Thank you so much for the love, Kenya!
Vengeance Road is my favorite cover because all the details are just amazing
Agreed! I love that cover too!
Great picks for the book covers. Those are the kinds of covers that make you want to thumb through the novel. The girl with all the gifts - that's a very intriguing one. I wonder if the story is as you described the cover. You've teased it well.
Would love a bookshelf tour video!!
David Mitchell always has beautiful covers just like the Cloud Atlas cover the pink and cyan swirly one 😍

I love love love the covers of The Bone Street Rumba series by Daniel Jose Older.
I always pick up the books behind it.
Vengeance road {sorry if I spelt that wrong!} is so beautiful it gives a light taste of the western theme and its full of interesting details 💚
Yes, it is so pretty!
Love the My Lady Jane cover, the U.K. version is not good at all sadly. The Bees is such a wonderful novel, the contents are just as good if not better than the stunning cover. my favorite covers all from Kiera Cass' Selection series.
Those are quite gorgeous!

Yes, both great covers! And it seems we aren't alone--lots of people are saying they feel the same way!
I totally feel the same way when picking up books at the book store.
hahaha i also pick up the 2nd or 3rd item of grocery this bc they're usually the freshest!
I have no idea what the bone clocks is about, but you made me buy a copy with that cover too! lol...thank u cause I love it
hee hee! ^_~
You're not weird. I always pick things up from the back of the shelf, but especially books. Lol. I also give random things personalities.
I get how you feel when buying books! I never want to take the copy that I feel is the most battered and that's usually the one in the front.. But now I feel bad for it😞 That Jane Austen box set is gorgeous; as an avid cover buyer I need it!
Lol yes yes yes at your emoji--that's exactly what I feel like!! We need to show those books extra love. It's hard out there for a battered book...
I do the same thing for my books AND my grocery. I always take the 2nd or 3rd one (sometimes even further!). Oh. My. God. haha!! I'm the same exact way with picking items from the shelves. I never get the one on the edge… always one or two behind. OMG I do that all the time, the food in back i feel in my mind is fresher than the one on display because everyone touches it ! Lol.
Have you checked out Delicious Foods, by James Hannaham yet?
I know what you feel. I speak with my books and they're my babies, they speak with me back hahaha

Girl the book story..girl...😐..they will feel ok if u don't buy them...someone else will buy it
I hope so.😥
No shade - you're so pretty but when you were taking about books in the library and food on the shelves - that was weird. I still love your channel.
