It’s even more tragic when you realize the reason why they can’t bring him back is that he’s at peace, he’s accepted his death and is willingly going to the afterlife.

Barbosa wasn’t belligerent, Jack was sensitive, Calypso was comforting, and Will, despite not getting along with Elizabeth, was there for her. At this point in the film, all four had selfish motivations and content for one another but they laid it aside for the dead and for Elizabeth.
Calypso was protective of Elizabeth in a way. “She must not leave the ship!” The way she was also trying to reassure Will and Elizabeth that her father was at peace is one of the reasons I love her.

"Elizabeth,, were not back..." Holy shit the goosebumps man! Edit: 1:50 Holy fuck this is heavy for a Disney movie. I almost started tearing up there. Did NOT expect this powerful of a dramatic scene in this franchise!
Disney’s got a lot of hard shit in their library, actually. For example, the ☠️ in Gaston’s eyes right before he falls off the castle. I still can’t watch Mufasa fall into the stampede. Fear of hurting family and the danger of naïveté in Frozen, toxic perfectionism in Encanto. Once you start looking, it’s really hard not to.
I would say both; he is proud that his daughter has grown into an independent and strong woman that he always wanted her to be. His role as a father is done and he is at peace. The only thing left for him is to see his wife again and send Elizabeth’s love to her.
I always wondered what it would have happened if Elizabeth HAD left the ship. Of course she'd die, too, considering Calypso's demand. But HOW exactly would it look like? Would she drown, suffocate etc etc? this scene has always been so memorable and so terrifying. As a daddy's princess it always throws me into tears. Keira's acting here was superb, the desperation, the rawness of her panic, felt so very real.
I like to imagine that the currents of the sea would keep pulling her to join the dead, and there would be no way of bringing her back up the ship, so she'd drown, yes... 🤔
PaperVisage like the Disney movie Hercules, jump in to the water and age rapidly Or Harry Potter and the half blood prince, the dead grab her and drown her Eather one would be a terrible way to go and judging by calipsos reaction it'd be bad considering a goddess was concerned that she'd jump
Jack is really decent at his core. You could hear in his voice that he felt bad for her despite her being the one that killed him. Her face when "we're not back" sinks in is pretty sad too, the pure joy breaking into horror.
At least she had a chance to speak to her father one last time, if it weren't for that, it would be horrible for Elizabeth to come back and realize that her father died without speaking to him again...
"You know the last thing I said to my father before I left? I can't recall. I can't remember if I said goodbye to him that morning. That's the funny thing about goodbyes: You never know if you'll get another one" - Sister Hannah, Fable 2
Keira Knightley once again demonstrating her talent. This particular scene was one of the most believable reactions to tragedy I've seen. Touching to watch as she struggles to swallow the truth, and in doing so shows her strong bond with her Father.
We must acknowledge Tia Delma for superb emotions while telling the truth. She looks at Will while governer telling the heart story, she might be aware of will Turners future. Nice Tia Delma!👍🏻👍🏻
I'M so disappointed that Will only has 2 scenes in the latest Pirates - movie... The reason about why I WANTED TO see the latest pirates - movie is because to see how Will would could endure to struggle to be under water ALOT, TO TAKE the souls to the other side. I REALLY THOUGHT he would be in alot of scenes, wonder why he isn't! It would have been SO DAMN Great! 😭
ChalkDustCough It's from disney, but that doesn't mean kids can watch it, it's actually very depressing story. I mean, pirates, that's something rough.
One would've expect that Barbossa would've spouted some harsh stuffs something along the line of "your dad's dead, deal with it", but no he just kept quiet and so was the rest of the crew.
This scene is heartbreaking, but it has multiple great moments. Many have already been mentioned. But my favourite was after Calypso says "She must not leave the ship!" Will is first to rush after her, but most of the others follow and are there when Will grabs her. They all care about her as well.
Is no one going to talk about the delivery of Elizabeth’s dad speech about Davy Jones Chest?! “I heard that if you stab the heart that yours must take its place. And you will sail the seas for eternity. The Dutchmen must have a captain”... I was like damn. I got goosebumps. What a great scene!!!!!
Jonathan Pryce is a criminally underrated actor. Every time I watch this scene I can't help thinking he's on a (theatre) stage in darkness except for a candle illuminating his face.
THAT is how you do an exposition dump without it being cheesy or boring. Ground it in an emotional reveal. We didn’t expect to see Governor Swann dead. We didn’t even get to see the moment it happened. We’re seeing the aftermath, and the toll it takes on his loved one. HOW he died is the plot detail that’ll be important, but we don’t really care about that because we want to know what happened to him. The solemnity of the moment, the performances of all involved, it’s just a perfect scene.
"There was this chest, you see. It's odd. At the time, it seemed so important. Silly thing to die for." I suppose that in death, the things in life we thought were so important become so irrelevent. Poor Governor Swann, he deserved better than what Beckett did to him.
I love how all these years later this franchise still gives you chills and feels as if you are watching the movies for the first time. They are SO GOOD. So many great moments
I thought the third movie didn't quite live up to the first and the second ones, but it undeniably had some weighty and well written scenes. This was definitely one of them.
It had some scenes that are completely unmatched - this one, up is down, the maestrom, the wedding... or sailing over the edge... Jack making Liz the Pirate King, Becketts death... the first scene, hoist the colours.... But I was furious that Jack and Elizabeths complex relationship was more or less tossed aside, that the "fearsome" pirate lords were played for a joke... Sao Feng had way too much screen time, they could have instead focused on their themes of freedom and living for eternity more. Elizabeth's ending was butchered - just one scene, showing she returned from her ship would have been enough, but no, they made it seem as if she was waiting on land for Will like a good wife... Still love the original trilogy, no matter what.
I only just watched these movies recently with my husband. I didn't grow up with them like he did. I just recently lost my uncle to a heart attack. He more of a father to me than my own at times. This movie tore my heart out in more ways than one.
At least he was able to reunite with his daughter for one last time to tell her how much he loved her and was able to tell her and the crew the truth about what happens when Davy Jones’ heart is destroyed.
This scene was truly sad, but also I just realised the last word Jack said to Elizabeth's father was 'Spritually' in his face jokingly before escaping in the 1st movie. Now he sees the same man, is a spirit. No wonder Jack looks like this.
Its funny that when he says when you stab the heart yours must take its place and then Caylpso looks at Will and Will looks like he knows that he's going to be a part of it 1:15 and 1:38
@@mineonlyedwardcullen True, but at least the Dutchman would be in much better hands. Had Jones lived, he would've kept terrorizing the seas and killing anyone standing in his way just for the pleasure of it.
Yes, Jack was very serious in this scene. But you can see it in his face when he hears about "sailing the seas forever" that even now, he's *still scheming.* His mind is always whirling. And when he uses it for selfish gain, it goes spectacularly wrong but he thinks up equally fantastical ways to evade the consequences. When he uses that brain of his for good... well, it still usually goes pretty horrendous, actually. Maybe everyone would be better off if he took a day off thinking now and then... x'D
What makes this sad for me is that he tells her that he’s proud of her. I never got to say goodbye to my great grandmother and yet I can tell that she’s proud of me. I feel the pain Elizabeth is feeling. This is one of many scenes why this scene and movie rules.
Its a shame they didn't keep the deleted scenes involving the Governor, they added much to the story. Plus, the ways he says "I think I am," always gets me. It shows that however he died, he didn't see it coming.
Such a sad scene, even Jack knew the situation was very grim, and when Will asks Tia Dalma if there’s a way to bring Elizabeth’s father back and she shakes her head 😭
It's a great scene. It's nice she got to at least see him again instead of just hearing about it. Sadly she didn't have te to really accept it and say goodbye but to at least see that her father accepted his fate and was fine since he was going to see his wife again.....no matter what it was sad either way but she wasn't alone when it happened either and he got to tell her how proud he is of her before leaving. It's just a great scene. Will was right beside her when she need him to be it was also cute.
While Jack is genuinely concerned and sad for Elizabeth he is clearly very interested when the governor says if you kill Jones you will take his place and sail the seas for eternity..no a bad “punishment” as far as Jack is concerned
Not only is this really sad, but also conceptually terrifying. Davy Jones neglecting his duty means the only fate for those who die at sea is just limbo. Imagine that, the only thing waiting for you after death is eternal misery.
What a horrible way to find out your father/mother died! They seem physically alive, however they're not, and you're just begging them to not to leave you. But they're at peace, happy to see that you're safe, only you're crying and hurting when there's nothing you can do.
I always thought it was cool/chilling how the rope she threw actually landed perfectly in front of her dad, but he didn't even react to it. Not even a flinch. Like Calypso said, the living are nothing but ghosts to the dead.
@@toxiclady218 Considering he's legit dead, he probably would've just looked at the rope, then at Elizabeth, then just apologized. It seems he knew that he was just a spirit, to an extent, so he wouldn't have gone back on the ship.
The fact that governor Swann was happy that he able to see his daughter one last time before passing into the unknown is such a nice and moving detail.
What sucks was jack hates Elizabeth a little bit due to her being the fact that he's in the locker but he still feels sympathy for her by heartbreakingly telling her that they aren't back and her father is dead.
I haven't watched this particular clip in over a year..back then I felt for Elizabeth, but couldn't relate. My father died this past November unexpectedly (he was only 47) and I'm torn apart and relate more than ever.
I never wanted Elizabeth's father to die I wish that he escaped from Cutler Beckett and that he was to go on a ship to find his daughter Elizabeth and then they would still be together and that they were to be safe from Cutler Beckett then when Elizabeth had a son that her father would become a grandfather and her mother a grandmother and it would be a happy ending together but that scene I saw it's terrible and so very sad to hear that Elizabeth's father died
0:28 in the cinema I remember a faint whimper when audiences recognised it was the father and could forsee the emotional scene about to take place for Elizabeth 🥺 And Governor Swann's first question is to know if his daughter is alive and safe or not 😫
"Elizabeth. We're not back." It looked like it broke Jack's heart that he had to be the one to tear her world in half.

POTC was a great franchise. Much smarter than many other Disney franchises.
I don't know which line is sadder: "I'm so proud of you, Elizabeth." or 'I'll give your love to your mother, shall I?"
I would say both; he is proud that his daughter has grown into an independent and strong woman that he always wanted her to be. His role as a father is done and he is at peace. The only thing left for him is to see his wife again and send Elizabeth’s love to her.
That bit when he says elizabeth are you dead and he says I think I am 😭
@@stephengreen2564he should know IF he 'is' OR not... Should remember IF something 'happened'
The first time Jack has ever been serious. He has a soft spot for Elizabeth
Keira's acting here was superb, the desperation, the rawness of her panic, felt so very real.
i know its been 3 three year, but what could have happen if swann left the ship... did you find the answer ??
I like to imagine that the currents of the sea would keep pulling her to join the dead, and there would be no way of bringing her back up the ship, so she'd drown, yes... 🤔
PaperVisage like the Disney movie Hercules, jump in to the water and age rapidly
Or Harry Potter and the half blood prince, the dead grab her and drown her
Eather one would be a terrible way to go and judging by calipsos reaction it'd be bad considering a goddess was concerned that she'd jump
I'm pretty sure she would've just stayed in the locker forever
Or she'd be lost at sea, forever lost in the void of Davy Jones Locker.
*"I'm so proud of you, Elizabeth"*
💔💔💔😥😥😥😥
Jack is really decent at his core. You could hear in his voice that he felt bad for her despite her being the one that killed him.
Her face when "we're not back" sinks in is pretty sad too, the pure joy breaking into horror.
This scene got me. The saddest by far. And one of the very few times you see Jack Sparrow completely serious.
At least she had a chance to speak to her father one last time, if it weren't for that, it would be horrible for Elizabeth to come back and realize that her father died without speaking to him again...
Yeah
"You know the last thing I said to my father before I left? I can't recall. I can't remember if I said goodbye to him that morning. That's the funny thing about goodbyes: You never know if you'll get another one" - Sister Hannah, Fable 2
@@donjezza10”Sorry- I didn’t mean- This isn’t like that. You’ll do great out there.”
-Hammer, Hero of Strength, Fable II.
This is haunting. It’s so painful to watch Elizabeth be so close yet so far at the same time. Masterfully directed and acted
Poor Elizabeth, she went through the most! She watched everyone she cared about die right in front of her.
Just noticed that since it's called "Davy Jones' Locker", when Davy dies and Will becomes the captain, it becomes "Will Turner's Locker"
I hope he finds Gov. Swann.
And this is disney? Wow, dark, deptessing. This is heartbreaking for a Disney movie.
dont forget the child being hung within the first 5 MINUTES of this movie! 😂
Oh geez just realized this is a Disney movie
ChalkDustCough
It's from disney, but that doesn't mean kids can watch it, it's actually very depressing story. I mean, pirates, that's something rough.
maybe since its from disney the story is more than likely going to be rich and interesting
ChalkDustCough watch their early works. This is par for the course when you look at them
One would've expect that Barbossa would've spouted some harsh stuffs something along the line of "your dad's dead, deal with it", but no he just kept quiet and so was the rest of the crew.
2:00 The one thing Sparrow hated more than anything unpleasant is witnessing death
I'm not that familiar with PoTC lore, where is that stated tho? 👀
@@teresarivasugaz2313 He was also the villain Carver in the underrated Bond film “Tomorrow Never Died”.
They shouldn't 'care' about that it must 'always' 'have' a 'captain'!
"There was this chest, you see. It's odd. At the time, it seemed so important. Silly thing to die for."
I suppose that in death, the things in life we thought were so important become so irrelevent. Poor Governor Swann, he deserved better than what Beckett did to him.
Wonder about why he did this to him! 😭
I love how all these years later this franchise still gives you chills and feels as if you are watching the movies for the first time. They are SO GOOD. So many great moments
This is really the darkest of ALL the POTC Films🎥…..
I thought the third movie didn't quite live up to the first and the second ones, but it undeniably had some weighty and well written scenes. This was definitely one of them.
To me it was the best one
It's the best Pirates movie for me. A fitting and climatic ending.
To me 3 is the darkest one.
@@traumer9622so Sad, the music about 'maelstrom' is only there little, not the whole music... They shouldn't have changed the music😭
When both Jack and Barbossa are acting seriously, you know it's not a joke.
Her father I thought was a great supporting character
This scene was truly sad, but also I just realised the last word Jack said to Elizabeth's father was 'Spritually' in his face jokingly before escaping in the 1st movie. Now he sees the same man, is a spirit. No wonder Jack looks like this.
Its funny that when he says when you stab the heart yours must take its place and then Caylpso looks at Will and Will looks like he knows that
he's going to be a part of it 1:15 and 1:38
They killed Davy Jones...why?! They knew that his ship had to have a captain with his heart!:'(
@@mineonlyedwardcullen True, but at least the Dutchman would be in much better hands. Had Jones lived, he would've kept terrorizing the seas and killing anyone standing in his way just for the pleasure of it.
It's called *foreshadowing* , if you want to use it in movie talk with friends to look smart 🤓
And then Calypso said "A touch... of DESTINY". Will must've been destined to become the Dutchman's captain.
@@CouncilCape897but WILL'S & ELISABETH'S happiness do be 'destroyed' then... Because then Will must waste the time with TO be at the Sea 10 years😭
This scene made me cry so hard as kid.I couldn't imagine how painful this was to be in this situation
“Are you dead?”
“…I think I am.”
That crack in his voice when he says it… makes me want to cry.
He should know IF he 'is' OR not...
The more I see these clips, the more I realize how deep this trilogy could sail.
Maybe everyone would be better off if he took a day off thinking now and then... x'D
I'll give your love to your mother shall I. That part broke my heart.
Goodness gracious me...that is so sad. Poor Elizabeth had to find out the worst way that her father is dead
Definitely not the worst or tragic, but definitely the most mentally emotional.
1:26 Ironic how that quote is said by both of Henry’s grandfathers
I like how even though everyone on this damn ship mistrusted or hated each other, but they all felt sorry for Elizabeth
Jack uttering the words “Elizabeth, We’re not back”. While that ghostly music plays will always give me chills
“Elizabeth, are you dead? I think I am”
That started to make me cry. When I was younger, I didn’t cry but I knew they were dead
1:22 All the crew were affected by Elizabeth's dad death, even Barbosa and Sparrow were affected ☹
My top fav characters:
1. Captain Jack Sparrow
2. Elizabeth Swann
3. Will Turner
4. Captain Hector Barbossa
5. Davy Jones
Such a sad scene, even Jack knew the situation was very grim, and when Will asks Tia Dalma if there’s a way to bring Elizabeth’s father back and she shakes her head 😭
2:21 actually, she sideways her head for saying no other way to bring her father back from the dead.
I think this is the reason why Barbossa loves her daughter even tho he's a pirate. He have seen that daughter will always love you.
This scene was both ominous and tearjerking!
The acting in this scene was just phenomenal
While Jack is genuinely concerned and sad for Elizabeth he is clearly very interested when the governor says if you kill Jones you will take his place and sail the seas for eternity..no a bad “punishment” as far as Jack is concerned
Jack loves the sea
"I think I am" hits hard as if when you die you dont even realize it at first.
How 'can't' he know?! 😱
This is heart breaking cause the last time they met they didn't even have time to say goodbye.
I always thought it was cool/chilling how the rope she threw actually landed perfectly in front of her dad, but he didn't even react to it. Not even a flinch. Like Calypso said, the living are nothing but ghosts to the dead.
Wonder why he doesn't! 😱😭
I wish THAT Elisabeth SUDDENLY would ask about why he doesn't catch the rope, wonder what he would say then
@@toxiclady218 Considering he's legit dead, he probably would've just looked at the rope, then at Elizabeth, then just apologized. It seems he knew that he was just a spirit, to an extent, so he wouldn't have gone back on the ship.
The fact that governor Swann was happy that he able to see his daughter one last time before passing into the unknown is such a nice and moving detail.
This seen is so tragic :( It's as sad as the scene where Bambi's Mother dies. Or even a little bit worse
your spelling is tragic too - "scene"
It wasn't me it was my cell phone ... I think you know the problem when your smart phone writes everything automatically "correct"🙈
Alice or when Simba watched his father died 😭😭😭
0:49 William reached for elizabeth
Poor Elizabeth.......i wish i could hug her.
What sucks was jack hates Elizabeth a little bit due to her being the fact that he's in the locker but he still feels sympathy for her by heartbreakingly telling her that they aren't back and her father is dead.
So sad but at least they had the chance to say goodbye.
I haven't watched this particular clip in over a year..back then I felt for Elizabeth, but couldn't relate. My father died this past November unexpectedly (he was only 47) and I'm torn apart and relate more than ever.
I’m sorry..
that twins shot were perfect.. adding a mysterious feel to the scene
This scene hit me so hard as a child and rewatching the series now, it's still an emotional gut punch.
"I'm so proud of you"
Will's death scene was realy sad, but this scene is for sure the saddest scene in the film..
0:28 in the cinema I remember a faint whimper when audiences recognised it was the father and could forsee the emotional scene about to take place for Elizabeth 🥺
And Governor Swann's first question is to know if his daughter is alive and safe or not 😫
