Even the fighters like McKenzie I never really knew what she was like cause her interviews she seems shy I guess but Nina has a way of resting with every fighter in some sort of way to where you feel like your watching two friends have a casual conversation. Literally the same thing. It's kind of how DC starts talking different when he's with Khabib. And that's just his friend, not a country he lived in for years. So you definitely can pick up an accent.

I think we all wanted to hear MacKenzies' reason for the accent. But the interviewer was literally explaining why to us in her own words. Instead of letting MacKenzie answer the question. So we'll never know the actual reason for the Dollar General accent.

What you guys don’t get is how bilingual people think and operate…when she was younger, she spoke a lot of English in school, and Portuguese at home, with her family…with time she spoke more and more Portuguese, with her parents, then boyfriends, husbands, trainers, etc…
I myself only speak Portuguese at home, I’ve been living in France for the last 8 years, and I have a slight French accent, that takes me a few minutes/hours to get completely rid of…
My nephews are all born in Brazil, but they speak Italian for most of the day at school, also them keep a accent when speaking Portuguese

@vitoravila9908 what language do your nephews speak at home? It would be rare for them to have an accent in Portuguese if they spoke Portuguese at home. I imagine they speak Italian with at least one of their parents. I know some kids here who were born in Brazil but have accents because they speak Korean at home and spend most of their time around the Korean community. That is hardly the case with Dern, she was born and raised in Arizona where there is hardly a Brazilian community in which she would have been isolated from mainstream society. She went to. School there and used to speak like a normal American. She is faking it, even if subconsciously.

I've been with a Brazilian woman for 4 years and I can't get why people moan about her accent. I'm Scottish and after a few weeks in Brazil the way I pronounce vowels takes a while to return to normal. The way they pronounce vowels especially is much different. She's jumping in and out of Brazilian Portuguese so much I wouldn't be surprised if she slipped now and again. In saying that she never slipped during this interview.

She's faking her accent she grew up in the US and everyone thinks it's dumb that's why the hate.
It's amazing how long she has continued to do that fake, Brazilian accent when she speaks English. She was born and brought up in the U.S, and attended American schools, and she speaks English, like it's a second language that she learned in Brazil. She's kept it up so long, that she should win an academy award.

I'm pretty sure you don't travel because that's how people develop certain accent, when they stay in another country and actually socialize with others to learn. Unlike some arrogant Americans who can't be bothered learning another language.

That she was born in US and spent her whole childhood here is what throws Americans off from what I can gather.
If you look up some of her interviews when she was younger; she has been known to both her country of heritage and her country of birth for awhile now; that she speaks with an American accent in English. Personally I don't think this stuff matters at all although I can see why it confuses people. Some lose and gain accents in the languages they speak based on where they live and what they hear. To think that a 1st generation American isnt also going to search out their roots and try to reconnect with them is kind of a silly notion to be honest.

Talk about “immersing” yourself into the culture. It’s like Mackenzie literally transformed into a Brazilian and destroyed any memory of being American.
People have never studied languages act like being born and raised in America means that you're going to have an American accent forever, your accent can change at any age, especially if its the accent of another language that you speak. It's completely subconscious, she picked up a Brazilian accent because she started spending more time in Brazil and speaking Portuguese more, to the point that she began to apply some of the Portuguese sounds to her English accent. It happens to people all the time, my wife is from New York and used to have a Brooklyn accent, but has completely lost her accent because shes been living in California for years.
Plz don't reply some anecdotal comment to me like "I've lived in England for 20 years and never picked up an accent" lol I'm aware that not all people pick up accents, but each person is unique some do and some don't

@@duramaxdad you're not Asian, so this is a bad comparison because Dern is Brazilian so her accent is from her own people; but if you were from Asia that would be completely acceptable since that would be your culture. Race has nothing to do with accents and does not effect them at all. Dern is Brazilian it's her own culture and language meaning it was much easier for her to pick it up, also she's not "doing an accent" that's just how she speaks

Dern isn’t living in Brazil. She live in the US and always has. A Brazilian who moves to the US would speak English with a Portuguese accent & lose it over time. UK residents who move to the US lose their accents over time. That’s how it works. She even had her Wiki page changed to “Brazilian-American”. It’s so ridiculous. Just stop the act already.

Having lived all over the world, I do NOT know any foreigners who came to the USA as adults and then lost their native 1st language accent and developed a "heavy" American accent. One post fight interview she needed a Portuguese interpreter to understand the english speaking interviewer..not buying it! And to note: She has a 2-4 MMA record in the last 3 years!

Both her parents speak Portuguese & so do the majority of ppl she knows. That will give anyone an accent. When she speaks Portuguese in post fight interviews it's for her parents & friends.
Her first language is in fact Portuguese but obviously grew up mainly in the states & learned english in school.

Her well known step mother learned English at the same time Mackenzie learned English. Her very well known father speaks Portuguese as does her ex & new husband. She speaks Portuguese as much as English but simple minds love following the narrative that she's being fake.
